Mahe, the autism assistant dog, never leaves his master's side, even in hospital

Posted Image
James Isaac in Wellington Hospital with his ever-present assistance dog Mahe.

Where James Isaac goes, Mahe follows – even into the boy's hospital bed.
The 9-year-old Wellington boy is autistic and relies on the black labrador to keep him safe and calm.
James cannot speak, and recoils from touch and eye contact with his family.

But he will curl up happily with Mahe.

I've always said that animals know more about love than people. People are cruel.

This is a wonderful job for dogs. I think the dogs and the humans are both happy in the relationship and both gain something special.
