Beef prices begin sudden fall from record highs

The boom market for beef is fading in Canada after record prices last year, but people will have to wait for costs to tumble in grocery stores.

The cattle industry has experienced a sudden drop in prices, forcing ranchers to adjust their expectations for the year.

"We had an incredible run. We doubled our prices in three years for calves, for example," said Brian Perillat, a senior analyst with CanFax, a cattle market research firm. "In the last few months, we've see prices drop 15 to 20 per cent from the high."

I noticed that too, Darcie. With Spring around the corner, I hope produce prices also fall.

Produce prices better fall if they know what's good for them! :D

There seems to be no rhyme or reason for some of the grocery store prices. Two weeks ago we paid .88¢/lb. for Red Delicious Apples - this week they are $1.68!
Beef roast (or almost beef anything)?? Can't remember the last time food smiley 016 other than ground beef now and then!

What really bugs me is when a store has something on sale - for example this week at Loblaws Royale Tiger paper towels (pkg of 6) are on sale for $4.49, and it says "save at least $5.30. "Who I ask you would pay $9.79?" I have cut way down on the use of paper towels

Take care,
Pat

A pack of 6 sponge towels lasts me a year at least and I buy on sale.

Old towels get cut up and we use them for free cleanups. We launder them to clean them and boil them to sterilize them.

I zap my dish cloths in the microwave, apparently that kills the bacteria. I hope that is true.

Our own produce doesn't come in until July except for asparagus, rhubarb and early lettuce so I always thought June was the most expensive month for veg. I'm glad I froze stuff last summer. Fresh tomatoes are a treat these days though lettuce and cukes have come down around here. I bought some Mexican asparagus that was quite good for about $3 at Food Basics this week.

Can you get skirt steak? A cheap cut and absolutely delicious slow cooked.

It seems you can compare skirt steak to flank steak. It is tougher than flank and looks fattier. I know flank steak has great flavour and can be cooked many ways. My favourite is to marinate it and simply broil it, cut across the grain.

my sil in Zimbabwe used to mention skirt steak.

I've never seen skirt steak in our grocery stores either. Looks like it's from the same area on the animal but closer to the front leg area.
