My cats (sisters) always have a bowl of dry food available and in the morning & dinner time they
each get a 1/4 can of fancy feast...so one can a day. They are quite small cats, the lilac point being the smallest.
I doubt she weights 5 pounds.

Mouse,
I understand. I got a Persian from the garbage room, I named her Fleur (after Susan Hampshire in Forsyte Saga.) Beautiful gray cat but, OH, the work. SHe must have had a tablespoon of mites in each ear. Took many applications of miticide (by me.) She was filled with worms...getting big pills down her that smelled like gasoline was no fun...we both hated it. Then I found she was pregnant. She cared for the first baby but it was born dead and unrevivable. Then she strolled around the apartment dropping 6 more corpses as she walked, never even looking back.
THen she forgot how to wipe her ass so every day I had to spray her keyster in the tub amid chaotic caterwalling and screaming. My older cat despised her and attacked her several times. I could take no more, so after about 2 years of this, I made Bob take her in a nice carrying case and a box of Cat Chow and drop her in a popular park. She was beautiful so someone snapped her right up.

I hated to do that, but I didn't wasn't to kill her, and I could not bear the thought of even one more battle in the bathtub. Like a bad marriage, you have to draw the line somewhere.

If a cat could be said to be profoundly retarded, I would say that Fleur qualified.

A big lesson: female cats are very territorial and will not accept another unless raised together from kittenhood.
Trots, are you just pulling my leg? laugh123 What a riot. Fleur must be like my girl Caramel. She can't wipe her ass either. I have to put on a pair of medical gloves and do it every day and sometimes twice a day depending on how many times she poops.
What a hallaballoo, she cries just like a baby when I clean her up.

She is so fat she can't even groom herself and she doesn't smell all that nice because it is a real struggle for me to comb and brush her, it is a big job and she doesn't make it easy. She will let me clean her ears and cut her claws though. That is all she will do willingly.

Many times over the last 6 - 9 months since I got them, I thought about taking them to the humane society as it was too much for me. I am not talking financially, that is pretty steep too, but it is trying to keep the big one clean enough that I am not smelling her as I can't stand that.

But, I fell in love with them and Dutchess is such a little princess and she takes care of me and sleeps with me and seems to mother me so I have to put up with it I guess.

These two are mother and daughter. The little one is the mother and that big fat fur ball is her daughter and they love each other. They have to stay together.

So today I asked a neighbour to weigh Caramel. He could handle her better than me. I have to wear my back brace to pick her up. He weighed himself, then weighed again holding her....and voila, I lied, she is only 37 lbs. I was sure she was more like 50 because I have always been a strong woman and I could lift, and that is what it seemed like to me. But she is still a very big girl.

People love her, I live in fear that someone might steal her, but I don't let them go outside at all.

Rag doll cats do tend to be bigger, therefore heavier, than most domestic cats. Not that I have ever heard of a 40 - 50 pound cat. I would love to see a photo some time. It is wonderful you took the two into your home, I expect they are thriving on all the care and attention you are provide. Do they go outside? My sister has had three rag dolls, all indoor cats, the latest came to her through a shelter in Winnpeg, he is huge! Possibly larger than any kitty we have ever had in the family. She does keep the cats on a strict diet. More expensive and it took some time to find a food the female would eat but the pet food store she goes to takes back cans not used. Can you consider going to a higher grade food?

My D has one cat who was always an outdoor cat until the extremely cold winter of 2014 in ON. He is not a rag doll but is quite portly. The vet said he had to lose weight, my D resisted trying to explain that this wintering couch potato kitty has always been big, even when the weather is wonderful - if he gets hungry when outdoors he hunts for his food, on top of what he is fed at home. Only being outdoors is what keeps his weight where it is versus slimming.

My cat weights under ten pounds, always has. He is an immigrant cat from China. Many cats there are quite small when compared to the domestic cats in NA. He only eats dry food - special formula for urinary tract issues. (He has been know to go into near death's door whenever I go away)
Thanks for sharing blizzard, that was an interesting read.

I just saw a video on youtube that shows the proper way to pick up a ragdoll. Maybe that is why mine cries, I am not picking her up properly.

These cats were delivered to me from another city. I guess they wanted to make sure I took them. They brought this humungous litter box with litter, but they didn't bring food so I have no way of knowing what to feed them and they are fussy. They won't eat people food, the little one won't even eat treats. The big one will wolf down treats tho.

When they arrived, I went to the store and bought toys. They didn't even know how to play. I had to teach them. They love to play now that they know how.

They are really happy with me. :MapleLeaf:

Thanks for sharing agate, they must be siamese. These two have the face of a siamese. When they started interbreading them, there was siamese in there somewhere, I read that.

I cannot imagine a cat that size at all. While it has been 20 years since I have had cats, ours were never over weight. You have to be able to feel their ribs with a thin layer of fat over much the same as dogs to have a healthy pet. There are diet foods for cats the same as dogs and perhaps some who have pets currently know of the better ones.

Take care,
Pat
GG, I can feel the ribs of the little one. She is actually quite skinny and I can feel her bones all over. The big one, can't feel any bones.

I made a mistake taking in these cats, I admit that. But; I was caught at a weak moment and being an animal lover, I thought I was doing the right thing. It is a decision I made and I will see it through unless they get so sick it would be better to have them put to sleep.

I have gotten anti-biotics from USA as well as other medications that I felt would help them get better. I researched for hours and hours to learn the doses I should give them and it is amazing how well they are now. They only vomit when they have a hairball now....compared to vomiting every day before.

A vet was going to charge a fortune and I couldn't afford it, they won't even look at a cat unless you get all their needles up front, even if you tell them they apparently had all their needles, as I was told, but now I don't believe that either. They needed xrays, sedation and a dozen other things and I am sure it would have been a couple thousand dollars. I have no idea their real age and I am not stupid enough to put out that kind of money to find out what is wrong with them, when I already knew and I felt I could help them myself.

Goodness me, Mouse, your kitty is humongous, if she is almost the size of the one in the video. My male kitty is a long haired domestic and weighs about 20 pounds. I have him on PetValu weight control dry food and about 1/2 to 1 small can of wet food per day.

Good luck with your kitty's weight loss. 1sm088doubleup.gif
Hi Milli, welcome to the forum and thanks for sharing about your cat. He sounds like a big boy also. I don't have her on a diet Milli, she gets too cranky if she doesn't get what she wants.

I am just slowly trying to get them down to three cans a day of fancy feast, then later maybe I will try two. There is always dry food and they eat that all night long. We can hear them crunching.

Consider yourself lucky, mouse. I still have scars on my inner thighs that I used to hold the darlings still for nail clipping. My GOOD cat could be a holy terror of nails and teeth when she didn't want something done.

At least the nail clipping was a once a month battle instead of the daily ass washing which I really couldn't bear anymore. I don't know how people even do it with infants.

Have you ever seen worm eggs wiggling in the little box by the hundreds? (Who knew eggs could be animated?) It was a sight ugly enough to blow lunch.

I checked many times for worms Trots and I haven't seen any. I must take a flashlight and check their bum hole at night and see if I see anything. I heard that in the dark they like to hang out there. I would just die if I saw that. I guess there is medication for that also.

The small one has bad breath and it smells like worms. YUK.

Wow Trots, those scratches on your inner thighs must have been painful. I have had a couple scratches on my hand and arm and they HURT. Now I have a pair of special oven mitts just for Caramel. Even if I just comb and brush a bit of her, I have to wear the oven mitts.

When I got her, she was so covered in matts on nearly every part of her body. It was terrible. I hired a "groomer on wheels" to bring the van over and shave her off. It was summer so I thought she would be ok. She got the lion cut and she looked so cute. It made her happy too as nothing was hurting her. I will do it again this year as she has mats on her under tummy again as she won't let me comb her tummy. I don't know why she gets so many matts, maybe because she doesn't clean there.

Thanks for sharing your hilarious stories about your little darlings, I laugh right out loud when I read it. When you describe something, a person can't help but laugh and enjoy reading it. <I am still laughing> laugh123

My cat has a problem with her gut. The first Vet cleaned her out, charges $700 and wouldn't talk to me about it. We went for a couple of months and then I took her to an animal hospital where a very caring female Vet once again cleaned her out. She also told me that the condition required an invasive operation where there was very little guarantee of success. Then she also told me of a special cat food that would be my best path. The food is made by Royal Canin and is only available through a vet.. it gastrointestinal and it has kept her pretty heathy. Although it is fairly expensive and is only made in the US has gotten more expensive, she only eats one half cup a day and occasionally gets a laxative, she is doing quite well. It has been nearly 2 years since she had any problems.

This vet gave me an itemazed bill with all the options and told me which ones were crucial the charge once again $700.s

While I was away I had cat sitter and they were horrified at her poop and gave her a type of wet food with mineral oil. she was getting pretty sick by the time I got home. But back on her proper diet she is again doing well. She is one of the most lovable cats I have ever had and you know some ignorant people dropped her off a 7 month old kitten in Oct. She literally moved in with me.

We had one cat who always got mats. As she lived with various family members over her 19 years we all came to the conclusion she must have figured out a way to knit them. Only my SIL2 could ever do anything about them without needing medical attention himself. She, and one other cat in the family (Hm, both originally with my eldest D) tended to need help with cleaning after using the litterbox. Eventually both were cured of that - a lion cut for the female, a few times and allowing the male inside.
Mouse, how wonderful your cats have you in their lives. I had one older kitten thrust into my arms during a break between classes, (this was in China) she did not have a long life (about two years) after getting a rare skin disease, but was a wonderful adoptive mother to the second kitten my youngest D brought home (she had already been promised she could have him - not by me!) Mozzy at 7 weeks after seeing some rotten child kick him. Again, in China. Mozzy is still with me - nearly 14 years later.

Here is the top half of her. I couldn't get the rest on the screen. I will have to try again when she cools off. She is angry right now.

A cat groomer once told me how to handle a cat with minimal body damage. Get the thickest large towel you can find and wrap the cat in it and only let out the part you need access to. I used to use that method with one cat. The other was so sweet and let me do anything including give her a shower.

I had a vet do the towel thing with one of my wilder cats, Tom Bombadil. The vet got some pretty nasty scratches and refused to treat him anymore. Luckily there were 3 other vets in the practice with more guts. :)
