Bell tells staff to downplay new $25 basic TV package ordered by CRTC

Bell Canada is directing sales staff not to promote its new basic $24.95 "Starter" TV package, according to a recent internal training document obtained by CBC News.

The "Starter" pack will be unveiled Sunday, the document indicates. By March 1, to comply with new CRTC rules, all TV service providers must offer a "skinny" basic package costing no more than $25 a month, plus additional pick-and-pay channel options.

The Bell document also shows that add-ons to the basic "Starter" pack can become so costly that what was supposed to be a good deal for Canadians could wind up, in some cases, costing more than their current cable bill.

One Bell employee who has seen the document told CBC News he believes that Bell's aim is to make the basic "Starter" package as unattractive as possible. He claims that's because the company wants customers investing in pricier deals.

They are going to make it as difficult and costly for the customer. Is there ever an honest corporation?

We had Bell TV service at one time and had no issues until we decided to move. We had paid our final bill, but they kept sending us notices and finally
phone calls saying that we still owed them. We were going to ask to simply have our service transferred to our new residence, but they did not make it
simple. I think their phone calls were coming from somewhere overseas, probably India. We got fed up with them and switched to Star Choice.

Especially after hearing this latest, I have no respect for Bell.

As expected the cable companies will have it calculated that our invoices will be the same or more for preferred channels. DH wants to cancel the cable however I have my preferred shows I enjoy watching.

I wouldn't deal with Bell again no matter how good their deal was. They are tough to deal with (if you can understand what they are saying)

Has anyone tried that ComWave that is advertised on TV.

If your DH cancels the cable, would you not be able to watch TV anymore? How would you see the soaps and the news? And Judge Judy?

Netflix and Shomi! I don't watch the soaps, or judge Judy. I like the news though, this can be accessed on the Net, but I prefer lying watching it on T.V. lol! I believe all Netflix and Shomi are pre programmed as well. I'm techno challenged, however DH had t all figured out. My daughter cancelled her cable, but for basic, her DH like me complained so she had to reinstate it! I enjoy the real estate shows on channel 33 as does he!

There is one worse than Bell, it is called Rogers. I went totally nuts with them, said one thing and charged another. My bills were always paid on time but it took hours on the phone to have them correct their erroneous billing.

They were condescending and outright rude at times

I will have to say that Bell has always produced what they said they would, have been very generous with freebies, and always always have corrected billing errors without a problem

I would do without rather than go to Rogers.

I have saved thousands by cutting cable many years ago but if the price is right I may consider a skinny package, maybe.

Sometimes it may be that you get the wrong person on the phone, and they can ruin the reputation of the company very quickly.

That is so true. I had it happen just the other day. I hung up in disgust but John persuaded me to phone again the next day. I got someone quite different, resolved my problem and thanked her for her help.

When I worked for the Bell in the early sixties, we had a six week training course before we ever spoke to a customer. We were monitored throughout our training and after. Once we were accepted and had worked well for a year we were offered a further 4 weeks training and on and on. In those years we were the elite of telephone service and rightly so. As for now, not so.

Enhanced Basic comes with my condo. fee so there is no choice unless the board finds a better option. I could pay for extra channels but choose not to though I rent a DVR so I can record programs to view through the week.

At home I have CBC on TV, nothing else. In Kingston there is a dizzying selection of channels, I rarely watch any of them including CBC. Until last night that is; I managed to leave my bag, with my glasses, book and iPad, in town! I finally broke down and watched some TV - now I understand what pablum TV is.

I know what you mean, I just record what I want and watch it when I want. The only thing I watch live is the news.
