Did not check the price and had a big shock when at home I put my sandwich together and looked at the price of the 2 pieces of sliced Havarti I bought...$1.59!!!!!!!!!!!YIKES Maybe cheese would be a good thing to give up. Rather that then my wine :wineglasssmile.gif: |

You really don't want to give up cheese, I have had to give it up and life without cheese is just not as much fun. But I do agree with you, rather give up cheese than wine any day. |

I love esrom cheese. Our butcher in Stratford used to carry it for me. Hard to get, from Germany. I haven't had a taste of it since we moved, no one here stocks it. There is a specialty cheese shop we visit in Whitby but they tell us they just cant get it. I am bummed. |

It does seem that some cheeses are impossible to get as I have run into that when looking for a speciality cheese for a recipe. Of course then the price is outta sight if you find it...sigh |

That did make me smile. While in Kingston I had the bounty of having any cheese I wanted. My D bought the groceries, loves cheese as much as I do, and did not expect, or even accept when I offered, me to pay for anything. I did manage to just go ahead of her to pay the bill some weeks - more expensive than my groceries ever are! At home no cheese, D here cannot eat it. |

Every now and then I get the urge for a wedge of imported Romano cheese. I eat only a small slice at a time and a 1 pound wedge lasts me a couple weeks. But the price is getting scary. I think cheese is a good thing to give up healthwise (concentrated calories, saturated fats, salt) but it is almost indispensable for me. I read an article that said something like "although you might not realize it, almost EVERY fast food incorporates cheese in one way or another often representing half the calories." We go through a lot of parmesan from Costco. Not cheap, but indispensable. |

I believe that and if you look at popular recipes on the net most require cheese. |

Cheese is fine in moderation, and possibly even beneficial. Trouble is, cheeseburgers, pizza, and various things like burritos are not consumed in moderation much. And the "cheese" is not cheese, as I understand the word. |

If you buy grated cheese and the first ingredient is not CHEESE, then leave it on the shelf. I got fooled twice by inedible slop called grated cheese. Current buy is Reggano 100% Grated PARMESAN & ROMANO and the first ingredient listed is Parmesan Cheese, second is Romano Cheese. The price is fair and the cheese is good. Beware any product whose first ingredient is WHEY. I prefer to grate my own at the table but prices for the chunk cheese are often OUTTA SIGHT, and besides I eat the chunk before it has time to go atop my pasta. laugh123 Edited by Trotsky, Mar 10 2016, 02:41 AM.

You're correct about recipes, I did miss cheese at first, especially mac and cheese, but I have cooked very good meals for over a year with no cheese. I do have a bag a dairy free mozzarella in the freezer for a foray into inventing a gluten free, dairy free and nightshade free pizza. One day.................... |

I'll bet! My friend with a gluten and dairy intolerance visited this week and she says she can eat goat cheese. Can you? |

My nutritionist said no, there was casein in all dairy. Maybe your friend had another type of allergy? |
