Guess everyone wants their own Trudashians
So much for sunny ways and reinstating home mail delivery... guess it all beats Vanity tours and magazine shoots

As far as I recall, the Liberals never explicitly promised to reinstate home mail delivery. They just kind of artfully hinted that, you know, once that SOB Harper was gone, the light would reappear and angels would sing. But the dawn has come and … WTF? Public Services Minister Judy Foote says home delivery will depend on what Canada Post can afford. And we know it can’t afford home delivery, since the high cost was the reason for phasing it out. Will the media care any more, now that they can’t bash Harper for it? Will Denis Coderre drill another concrete pad? I kinda doubt it.

BTW: Trudeau must be closing in on Dalton McGuinty for all-time record of most promises broken or fudged by a new premier/PM. Someone should keep score. Not that it matters when he’s so yummy.

Not to mention a secretive process for picking Senators...

Bet this make you all warm and fuzzy inside too

That was just silly to say they'd reinstate mail delivery, in the first place. Drop boxes are in most of the newer hoods here. Promises are made during elections by each and everyone of them, then sanity prevails once they are elected.

And if they had reinstated them? FSG, you would be on here complaining about the free spending Liberals.
I don't recall them putting a time frame on reinstating home delivery but it may not be practical at this time, if ever.

Nice to know that you all prefer 'vanity fair' to actually working on the economy.

It is also reported that “an independent advisory board” has sent the PMO a list of 25 potential candidates to fill the first five seats of the 22 that are empty in the Senate. Wow, wasn’t that an open and democratic process. The Liberals’ new and improved Senate appointment system seems to work a lot like Supreme Court nominations: a committee appointed by the Prime Minister quietly selects candidates through some secretive process and sends them to the PM, who chooses his favourite.

It's too bad that once again our snowboarding leader is not considering the implications of his ideology.

Currently the Senate is based on the same government / opposition ranks as the Commons. House leaders on each side are given deputies and debate is structured on hearing from both sides.

An 'independent' Senate has to come up with some form of replacement. It would make some sense at least to create a 'regional' senate with representation from four jurisdictions - Ontario, Quebec, Atlantic Canada and the West.
We could face reality and put Ontario and Quebec together as Central Canada and the Atlantic and West representing the rest of the country. That has been our history, much to the dismay of the East and West. The prime difference would be that East and West would outnumber Central Canada as Ontario and Quebec

Looks like another Trudeau promise has been revisited and a sensible conclusion reached.

Definitely a sensible decision, but but but... I don't seem to remember it being 'sensible' when Harper made it.

Indeed, do you not remember the argument I had with someone here on postal delivery? I argued that towns in Hawaii had just as many mailboxes in their post offices (and superboxes) as we do in Canadian towns so clearly the delivery to the door situation is similar in the two countries. We have never had delivery to the door. It has only become an issue since some city people have had to pick up their mail on the way home from the bus stop. Ah buses - subsidized in cities, none in towns.

I agree Delphi. Home delivery is so passe. And all the excuses people come up with such as the elderly and the disabled ...... well everywhere there are mailboxes these folks seem to manage. Everything is all about change these days no matter how resistant we are.

Take care,
Pat

Here in Ontario disabled people may apply for a permit that allows them to park their vehicles in special reserved parking places.
Why not have a similar arrangement that would allow a discount on the municipal taxes. The savings would then be used to hire a mail pickup service for those who are disabled
I have lived with both community boxes and home delivery. Home delivery is certainly less hastle, except for parcel delivery. At my previous home, we had a mailbox on the roadway. We had to check our box on a daily basis as passers goingto by, could access our mail. Or if we were vacationing, arrange for someone to collect our mail every day.
With the community box, the mail could safely be left for a period of time. The community box saved driving to the post office to pick up parcels. As my wife was disabled, getting the mail fell on me. Without me, my wife would have had to arrange for some one else which could have been a problem.
Presently, with home delivery, I have to arrange for some one to clear my mail if I go away. Because I'm mobile, I look forward to the community delivery system.

I live in a neighbourhood where most of the houses were built before 1900, a heritage district. We have a watering trough, a couple of carriage posts and a carriage step or two still extant. You can imagine how a community mailbox will enhance the area! I know of several elderly women who have no local family members and I will join their ranks in a few years. I suppose it will be necessary to pay someone to pick up the mail.

Don't try to water your horse.

Home mail delivery is an anachronism. Mail boxes will soon follow. Probably parcel soon after. Pick-up will be at retail establishments. Order online and pick-up. It is in effect now in many stores.

There may be a small niche market for these old services operated by private subscription.

Get use to it.
