Another 90 degree day today (92 yesterday,) two in a row expected to continue through the weekend. Air conditioner running hard...set at 73. We get free electricity (or a constantly priced maintenance fee that include air conditioning (650 apartments share a dingle meter.) Instead, we pay a surcharge each months calculated at $15/unit. So we have just one, 12,000 Btu/hr in the Living Room. Naturally, a small unit in the bedroom would give us a more even temperature throughout but would cost an additional $180/year. So we use only the one and use a 12 inch floor fan in the LR to route the cold air down the hall and a 16 inch floor fan to push this air into the bedroom. We get about a 2 degree differential and it has always been cool enough for sleeping. I bought the 12K Fedders for $399 with free UPS delivery and COULD have gotten a 14K in exactly the same case size (important when going into a through-the-wall sleeve.) I made a mistake and would have appreciated the faster cool down of 2K more. So to compensate we leave the unit running when we go out. The upside of the 12K unit is that a slightly undersized unit that must run nearly continuously is a far better dehumidifier than an oversized one that shuts off often and blows wet air back into the home. It really is nice that I would pay the same to be comfortable or uncomfortable. I choose comfortable. In the past, whenever I ran the AC with abandoned I would see $$$ flying out the window along with the heat. Now if only it was a bit quieter, I'd be in Nirvana. |

I turned my AC on yesterday, like you my electricity is included in my rent. I leave it on very low 24/7 when the humidity is high. |

That temp sounds lovely as ours has deserted us and it is cool & damp. I am refusing to turn the furnace back on till October !! Our furnace is set at 18 and cut in this morning. I had the A/C on last Wed. in Calgary and the furnace for the remainder of the time we were there. The first week of June is forecasting back into the 20's. |

From what I remember, a lot of tossing of wet sheets off the bed and making the bed over again in the middle of the night. |

I don't have air conditioning and I don't want it, though that may change in time. I like having windows open after months of being closed in. It probably helps that it is a 3 storey house with a large tree in front. |

How did people sleep in the 1950's without air conditioning. I was raised in a little farm house. I'm sure it was hot, but can never remember not sleeping. Probably due to the fact we worked in the fields and garden all day every summer, were so damn tired we fell asleep when our heads hit the pillow. |

Really? You use an air conditioner powered by electricity.? And you complain about fossil fuels consumption.? Where do you think that electricity is coming from? Probably a generating station somewhere powered by natural gas or coal or oil, Sorry but windmills don't cut it for a city of a million people and neither do solar panels. |

I've had my a/c on for a few days now. I'd love to open my back window and get a cross draft but my smoking neighbours pollute the air that comes right in my window. I'll try just having the front windows open tonight to save hydro. I keep hoping that they'll take a long vacation but then their chain smoking son has all his smoking friends over. I'm surprised that so many young people smoke these days; it never seems to go out of style. |

I don't have air conditioning Trotsky. I don't sleep well anyway but it's not because of the heat. I have a new tourist slogan. "Come to Canada. The whole country is air conditioned". |

Put a fan in that window and blow the smoke back out at them. |

We are going to have to live with a hybrid solution for awhile. There is no way we can continue the lifestyle we have without fossil fuels. Gather ye rosebuds while ye may,: Old Time is still a-flying; Edited by campy, May 31 2016, 02:32 PM.
