Cost of implants

More expensive than a hearing aid, the total cost of a cochlear implant, including evaluation, surgery, device, and rehabilitation can cost as much as $100,000. Fortunately, most insurance companies and Medicare provide benefits that cover the cost.

Everything related to medical drugs, procedures, and devices are exorbitantly inflated. Some drugs are marked up thousands of percentage points, and try stepping into a dentist's office without feeling skinned when you leave. Our son used to date a dental assistant, and she said most dentists have 2 rates, one for those with insurance and one for those without. It's the same with most everything, when insurance or the government is paying, the rates are going to be much higher.

Cochlear implants would fall under the provincial ADP program which means that the governement pays 75% every 5 years - for some devices the length of time may be different. In many instances of financial hardship other groups will , pick up the remaining 25%, e.g. a specialised wheeelchair for an ALS patient might be partially paid for by the ALS Society. The Assistive Devices Program is a great boon, but it has encouraged manufacturers to come out with increasingly expensive devices.
I have known this man for a dozen years and do not in any way see him exaggerating and definitely not lying. Often on here something is said that I would love to question, but out of respect I zip it as my friend in Kilmarnock always advised.

This is the first time the daughter has gone to Sunnybrook Hospital as up until 18 the procedures are done at Hospital for Sick Children. The daughter had zero hearing from birth.

I do not pretend to know anything about any of these procedures, but I would stake my life on this man's honesty.

Take care,
Pat

Annie knows when to be quiet, but since she is a blonde female, has a mind of her own. laugh123

She was about 3 yrs old when we got her, so we can only guess at her previous life in the US. She is quite protective of us, definitely doesn't like darker skinned people, doesn't like people wearing hoodies, (I'm not that fond of hoodies either) and thinks she is 100 lbs when around other dogs. When I take her for a walk every morning, from the amount of poop in the bag after, I think sometimes she's 100 pounds as well. biggrin 04

GG I was not disputing anything, I was just pointing out that the reason he has to pay $5000 is because that is 25% of the total cost and ADP picks up 75%. Darcie pointed out that some may not be able to afford that, in some cases the 25% is covered by another organisation, ALS or MS or MD or whatever.

This happens all the time, and if we think all our health care is covered we are fooling
ourselves. After my SIL's serious motorcycle accident and a few surgeries the surgeon charged much more than what our insurance pays. Still we are so very fortunate in Canada. As my friend said "In the U.S. you would be footing the entire bill."

Take care,
Pat

No, that's a generic one that probably looks like mine did as a puppy. Maggie was a puppy mill dog in New York who had God knows how many litters. At some point, her litters became smaller and smaller till she was no longer worth keeping. She spent 5 years outside in a cage. The puppy mill was going to euthanize her when an animal rescue stepped in. They transported her to a rescue in FL where I got her at age 5. She HATED men, loved women. After six years with me now she loves everyone but doesn't like other dogs. She has a great life and is very loving.
