Uneven Sound Volume

The difference in TV sound volume is uncomfortable lately, especially on British PBS dramas and CTV commercials. I have the sound set so I can hear the dialogue on PBS but then background music blasts my eardrums and i have to mute or turn it down, losing dialogue. CTV raises the volume during commercials and I have to mute them and I thought that wasn't supposed to be allowed. Does anyone else have this problem?

Dialtone: do you mean the sound setting between bass and treble on the TV?
Hi Haili, this is what I mean. http://www.manualslib.com/manual/516540/Lg-Tv.html?page=173

Our TV has settings for auto volume and clear voice. It takes a bit of adjusting to find the optimum settings for our ears, after that we never touch it again.
I have two TVs! One a LG, the other a Samsung. The LG has an over volume control. The O/V control clips the volume of the sound if the volume level goes higher during commercials.
The Samsung doesn't have this feature, however its superior sound engineering makes it unnecessary to have this feature!

I'll definitely look for that feature the next time I buy a TV! My sound bar is a Samsung but it just seems to work on one setting.

I found out that my VCR has that feature and it's an older Toshiba, though I hardly ever use it any more but it will come in handy when I do.

I think my TV (the SONY ) has the sound leveling feature and I will search for it, but it means finding the remote for the TV which I haven't used in a couple years. As I recall the, the MENU is a daunting adventure with many terms that are quite cryptic.

Trotsky: I feel better now that you posted that! My TV "instruction book" is a folder with tiny print and terms I'm clueless about and with 3 remotes to deal with I'm afraid of messing things up completely if I experiment. There are buttons on the DVD remote that have nothing but different colours. Are we supposed to be clairvoyant?

haili,

First find the selection that says something like "Return to Factory Settings" or "Return to Default Values." Then in case of a screw-up you can get to some reasonable approximation of okay.

Sometimes with Sony you need the original remote. The Universals don't work.

But the Menu isn't that daunting once you go through it a couple of times.

I was lucky. I bought a Sony TV at a yard sale without the remote. I thought it was a monitor until I got home. I found one at a thrift store that worked. Only $2.00.

They had a huge bin full of remotes.

My DVD/VCR has those settings and I must remember to change that one when I run out of recordings. I checked the TV set up instructions and didn't see any mention of O/V.
