RBC and Shoppers Drug Mart latest to break up credit card marriage

In the sometimes tumultuous world of co-branded loyalty cards, another partnership has gone sour. In this latest case, Canada's largest drugstore chain and biggest bank are parting ways.

Royal Bank and Shoppers Drug Mart are ending both their co-branded debit card and Shoppers Optimum MasterCard.

The cards allow Shoppers customers to earn extra Optimum points they can then exchange for free in-store products.

Neither card is available any longer. Their combined 200,000 existing customers will be switched over to other RBC banking products by the fall.

Both Shoppers and RBC say the breakup is mutual. Shoppers Drug Mart chalks it up to "business reasons."

The world of credit is having some second thoughts.

I do not have a credit card and actually used up my paltry $10 Optimum points yesterday. Once point cards become easier to use on phones I expect the savings will drop. Some are easier than others.

I have the Optimum card, not credit card. That is still OK. I have $80 on mine, have used these points often.

I have an optimum card, but rarely shop at Shoppers Drug. Here's what I find with Shoppers, # 1 they are expensive, # 2 they have senior's day where you are entitled to 20% on full priced Items only. They lower many of their items by 10% thus defeating the purpose. I did purchase a mascara for 27.00 and received 20%. I bought milk and eggs, which were supposedly on sale. I walked next door to Sobey's to pick up fruit, and the milk and eggs were cheaper there.

I buy some stuff there on sale, their Oreal is cheaper than Walmart, their COQ10 and probiotics are also less expensive. I only shop when I download the extra points giveaway, never on senior day. I was surprised last month to see that my multi-vitamin that is gluten and dairy free were less than at Walmart.

You have to be careful, their eggs I get when they are $1.99 and are $2.78 at the grocery store.

I don't have the patience for optimum cards and the like.

Accumulating points in such slow and painful fashion seems worse than collecting string or balls of tin foil.

Actually they gave me an optimum card years ago. I dont shop with any idea of using it but they ask me at the checkout each time and I drag it out. I have tons of points and I guess I better use them.

Shoppers in Stratford is the only place I have been able to find Chanel # 5 bath powder. you can easily get every product that Chanel makes but not the pressed bath powder. So I load up on it there. It is the scent that I love and use anymore.

You really have to watch the prices at Shoppers. I only go about every 3 months on Seniors 20 percent off day and go back later for my $10 freebie, usually groceries. I got 3 lbs. butter a few months ago and a lipstick last time. Their prices are usually higher than Walmart but the 20 percent off brings them down to a normal price. Eggs and butter used to be much cheaper than the grocery store but since Superstore took them over they have gone up about 50 cents.

I always comparison shop, some people think Walmart and Costco is always less, not so. I check prices in various stores.

Walmart and Costco aren't always cheaper but some people refuse to believe it. I look at all the flyers and go to the one with the best specials for what I need. A lot of people price match now with their smart phones but I can't be bothered because I hate getting in line behind someone who does that, or who takes a bunch of flyers to show the checkout clerk.

You and I are kindred spirits in this regard! I have an Optimum card and have yet to redeem a nickle from it.
