I received a notification on F.B. that listerine mouthwash is a mosquito deterrent. DH put some in two little spray containers. I sprayed myself before doing and yard work today and it does work. We also spray Tucker down with it before taking him to the park, also works for him!

Any flavour, nice because it doesn't have any unpleasant odour, and is not sticky.

I have three nasty mosquito bites and have to do some garden work, perhaps a run to the drug store for Listerine is necessary. Although I think I have bug spray in my emergency kit.

It's been so dry down in our area, that I haven't seen a mosquito yet this year. My sister in Ontario says they are plagued with mosquitoes, black flies, and deer flies, I think I prefer the dryness.

My daughter went camping for the first time in about nine years on the weekend, she said the mosquitoes and horse flies were dreadful. Would the latter be the same as deer flies?

Deer flies are smaller than horse flies, but they both bite and are tenacious when they decide you're the next meal.

Edited to add a bit of info on the flies. http://entnemdept.ufl.edu/creatures/livestock/deer_fly.htm

I don't know where you would classify black beach flies but they are the most tenacious and will readily draw blood with each bite of crosscutting razor sharp mandibles.

I have not gotten a mosquito bite so far this year...hooray :ciao: , because every one gets infected and lasts for weeks. Perhaps the City is beiong good with treating ponds and eliminating puddles. We have had very little rain in NYC.

I remember when swimming at the lake being attacked by what we called 'fish flies'! We would attempte thwart them by swimming away, under water! However, they were already there, waiting for me to surface.

That sounds like the animal I am referring to...they are relentless and their bites HURT: more like a wasp bite than a mosquito.

I narrated the tale of being chased from the beach to our rental a block away by a single fly, my escape being assured only when I slammed the screen door and the fly bounced off.

I am not fond of biting things.

Then don't go to visit Ottawa! I once camped at the Rideau river Provincial Park and I swear that the mosquito's were about the size of humming birds and as thick as Mounties at a dope peddlers convention. :blackbirdyawn:
