Measuring shades and blinds

How are these measured?

I want a darker bedroom...pitch black if possible. Right now we have heavy tapestry type woven draperies which are fine except when the rising Sun hits at dawn, then light gets through.

So then shades or blinds. I know where I can get both pretty cheaply but I am not certain how they are sized. The window jamb is exactly 81 inches with two windows sharing the space deparatedf only by the metal piece conjoining the two windows.
So I am thinking 2 x 40 inch blinds (One custom 81 inch rig is prohibitively expensive and I had wide ones <96 inch> once and they were impossible to wash...didn't fit in the bathtub.)

So, when they say 40 inch, are they talking about to the ends of the mounting brackets for blinds and tip to tip with shades? Or is the 40 inch the actual shade and blind material width.

I once swore I would NEVER AGAIN have Venetian blinds, so I am flirting with perjury here. laugh123 <Well, there goes my shot for the presidency.>

I would instead by the fabric made for this purpose and line my existing drapes with it. o need then for extra attachments. You could stitch it on by hand after pinning into place.

The way I do it. I do my own but I can't see why you couldn't take them for trimming.

Get the curtains you want and hang them first.

Then just fold them and pin them or mark them with white chalk. No measuring at all and a perfect fit every time.

Then take them to the seamstress for the final sewing.

Good idea, have done that but it really doesn't work all that well. I did find that real wooden shutters worked best, though a bit pricey.

The best way to do it is to hang them first and then mark them with chalk or pin them.

Then take them to be hemmed or hem them yourself by hand. Put some weights in the hem and you are done.

No measuring and a perfect fit.

This is my setup but the ones in the bedroom are dark. I have a sewing machine.

You may be able to mount them over the existing setup and just pull them back when not needed.

Why don't you just get "black out shades" that you can purchase at Home depot, Walmart. My daughter got them for her basement when guests with little kids were coming to visit from Toronto. They cost little and she removed them when they left. She is now talking about getting permanent ones for her daughter's room, that can be installed behind the blinds and pulled up during the daylight hours.

one of my Ds uses a black out blind, another has used a double set of drapes, the nice ones on the inside, black behind. They both also wear eye masks.

Eye masks? How can you tell who is kissing you?

I have tried eye-masks but they get on my nerves rubbing against my preposterously long lashes.
But seriously, the are very annoying.

Yes, blackout shades or blinds would be fine and I know where I can buy them both for $6.99 per half of window but I need to be sure of the FIT. I can buy them in whole inch sizing but the store is a pain in the ass with returns so I was hoping that 2 x 40 inch would do for the total 81 inch jamb to jamb space. The middle mount will be vexing.

I don't want to sew anything to the drapes because they are nice and besides that would do nothing for the light escaping around and between the drapes. NYC remains pretty bright all night.

I guess some people would say they just know who it is they are kissing.
What I really wanted say is that maybe the mask makes not knowing more exciting.

Like Trotsky, I never use eye masks. Anything over my face or around my neck makes me prone to a panic attack. One reason I fear dentists.

Oh goodness no! Just the thought of anything around my neck I cannot swiftly remove has me break out in a sweat. It took a couple of decades before I could comfortably wear a scarf.

I also dislike scarves, turtle necks etc. I just find them too constricting.
