Phobias. They do work out in your favor sometimes.

We were in a crowd and my girlfriend had her arms around me and was hanging on for dear life.

I found out later, she was claustrophobic.

You can buy a sleeping mask that has the eye portion raised. These are harder to find and cost more. I use one quite often because the birds get up at 4 am right now.

If your regular drapes are wide enough and high enough, you might be able to put an old fashioned roller blind at the top of the window.

Yes. Those old roller blinds. I'm wondering if they still make them.

There was one place in town that custom made those roller blinds because so many windows are oddball sizes.

I am one of those people that can fall asleep with the lights on.

So what I did with my bedroom is put a timer switch on the wall to shut the lights off.

<I have several, none with the raised eye portion.>

<They do, and I consider them a viable option in the "room darkening" variety. If I find them cheaper than the blinds I will opt for them in 2 x 40 inch. They still present the same problems: will 2 x 40 fit in 81 inches and how complicated will the middle mount be?>

There was one place in town that custom made those roller blinds because so many windows are oddball sizes.
<Custom blinds and shades cost a fortune...for 81 inch sizes, a couple hundred bucks.>

<I can too...but I cannot stay asleep.>

I will settle on a choice this week and then just do what I have to to make them fit properly. (Right now I am using mirrored film on the inside of these windows and while these give some privacy and cut down on some of the light, they are getting shopworn and make a really clean window tough.)

Trotsky I had a similar problem My bedroom had a pull down blind it was there when I moved in not my choice because the darn blind had fallen down a few times. The turkey that installed it didn't do a good job My son took it down...
I also have a drape to match my bedspread plus white sheers but the light was still coming through.. I found the perfect least expensive solution
I bought these inexpensive drapes paid less than 20.00 went to the dollar store bought a black metal broom handle a couple sturdy hooks hung my dark drapes under the others. Worked like a charm.. When I sleep I don't want a crack of light coming through my window.....
Here is a drape nearly exactly as I have...bought mine on a sale bin from Walmart Total cost was 23.00 with the hooks handle and drapes...

A sleeping mask is not something I would use, but a scarf or a turtle neck doesn't bother me at all.

I sort of like to wake to a bit of the light starting to come up, just seems more natural. Not that I want sunlight streaming in the windows but seeing the light through the drapes is not a bother to me.

I can't even stand the light from my clock radio. I cover it at night but still have it facing me for when I need to look at the time.

I have severe insomnia so need to eliminate every disturbance I can.

I have heavy black curtains that I bought at JC Penny. They were inexpensive and don't let any light in. And they look like hell because my window is so wide that they don't fit proportionately. Maybe I'm exaggerating the look but over the past year have come to hate them. When we paint soon, I'll look for replacements.

I finally bought 2 cheap Venetian blinds (40 inch each, only $9.95+tax) and FINALLY installed them. They look very nice and the block a lot more of the light. So between the blinds and the heavy brocade draperies, I manage to keep out the morning Sun fairly well.
Unlike last apartment that had 96 inch blinds that I could not fit into a bathtub, so 23 years without every getting really cleaned, these I can at least wash every year.
