Guess everyone wants their own Trudashians
This is strange. Ontario is moving to scale back full annual inspections at nursing homes, this does not bode well for seniors.

LONDON, Ont. — Three years after it vowed to do more to protect nursing home residents, Ontario’s Liberal government is quietly pulling the plug on yearly inspections at more than 500 homes, Postmedia News has learned.

My God, it gets worse and worse. All the nurses I know are or have retired because they cant abide the changes that have been made already.

I am betwixt and between on this. Those inspections do take up a lot of staff time, both in preparation and during the actual visit, even when you are totally in compliance.

If they announce the pending visits then they are defeating the purpose for same. What a joke, like cleaning up your house and making sure you have good meals because your mother-in-law is coming.

I never knew they made appointments. What a crock.

My cousin is a nurse and both she and I have had relatives in nursing homes. We both think the major problem there and elsewhere is that they are replacing as many full RNs as they can with RNAs. Joanie, my cousin, started out that way many years ago and then gained her full RN at UofT. We are not putting down the RNAs and their work but are saying that the people responsible are using them in a way that is not suitable and not always safe.

As far as inspections, I say bring them on. They keep people on their toes. I also agree with Darcie that there should be unannounced inspections too. They both have their place.

No Darcie, it really isn't like that though I completely understand why you would think so. It's pulling all the darn files and charts and searching for ones that have relevancy to what they want to see because not all residents would fit particular criteria. It's making time to sit with them and go over each of thes charts and daily records meticulously. They do - or did - do drop in unscheduled visits as well, particularly if there has been a complaint.

Angora it's not so much that RPNs are now doing what RNs used to do, it's that PSWs are doing what RPNs used to do! Not really, but almost.

In America, they give you a window of time in which to be expecting them. They don't say "we're coming on so-and-so day". The inspections are so thorough and detailed, nursing homes can't just clean it up over a weekend. There must be systems in place and those systems must be followed. There are extensive paper trails that reveal all. They interview the patients themselves. Are the patients dressed, hair combed, and do they look happy? They watch med pass. They examine all equipment and will ding you for broken bathroom tiles. They will easily know if you're not doing your jobs

Even after the preparations, etc. you would be surprised at the reports posted on the bulletin board of the inspection.

You're right, fuzzy. Sorry about that. Everything being referred to by initials used to anger me. Now, in my dotage, it just confuses me. :(
