My son and dil have a 4 year old rescued Golden. He is having problems with his knees. Apparently 2 separate vets have told them that he needs operations on both of them which will be 3,500.00,each. otherwise he will be living in increasing pain. They are looking for an answer. They cant afford the op and neither can John and I. I was thinking about Guelph Agriculture college for more help or maybe, acupuncture. Does anyone have any suggestions. Thanks |

Knee problems tend to be structural in nature, so I have my doubts about acupuncture, unless you meant for pain relief. Not sure if it is an ACL issue, for which they make braces.....or if it's Osteoarthritis. Rimadyl is a great anti-inflammatory for dogs. I got two more good years for my Lab, using that for pain relief. It was almost miraculous. Some people swear by Glucosamine but I never had much luck with it.

I recommend small braces, if they exist for pets. My knee brace works very well for me. I get pain and wear the brace for two days and then I am good for a month or two. I'll be Darned. A couple of them even LOOK like mine, only tiny. Edited by Trotsky, Jul 26 2016, 05:10 AM.

Yes, they make as I mentioned above. Not too expensive either. |

Kim just had knee surgery on Harley in February, and it was well over $4,000 all told. His was caused by his constant jumping, and she was told it will happen again if he continues to jump which is why I carried him up and downstairs for 3 months and watch him closely. Take care, Pat |

Montana took glucosamine and chondroitin for most of her life, and was the only bigger dog we had that did not develop arthritis or hip dysplaysia. It takes a long time for it to kick in though. Take care, Pat |

Angora I would call the vet college in Guelph, there has to be another solution. How sad for your son and family, let us know what you find out. A lady from here volunteered for an animal rescue, she took a dog from Edmonton to Guelph for surgery. She was asking for donations at the Y to fund the surgery and trip! It seems to me Guelph was the only vet college that would do the surgery. |

Thanks so much to you guys who responded. I will pass the info on to my dil. I agree, Swing, with calling Guelph. I have heard from my former cat sitters of wonderful work they've done for hopeless cases. And, David, Trotsky, GG, you've all given some ideas that Julia may not have looked into. Although, knowing her she is researching her able brain out. Personal experience is so reassuring. |

I got a message from Julia, who says thanks. She is going to look into the things new to her. She is actively looking for 'gelatin for horses '. She has been told this might help. she cant find anyone in Canada who sells it. Does anyone know anything about this. |

http://www.calibex.com/Horse-Gelatin/shop-html?nxtg=1bc90a50050d-1D3D36431EACBC3C I don't know if it's horse gelatin she wants, if so here is a link. My DH orders from Amazon.com all the time. He orders continuously so pays a yearly shipping charge which is much cheaper. Many articles are cheaper than purchasing in the stores. |

Thanks swing. Here's what she wrote: Chase is currently on Meloxicam and gabapentin as well as getting a glucosaimine/chondroitin mix with green lipid muscle and omegas. He gets a lot. I'm looking into gelatin but still can't find anyone in canada that sells horse grade stuff. To buy from the US is insane. |

I read it was gelatin for horse's hooves Darcie. I also read gelatin is used for people with arthritic pain, think I might try it!
