Chapter I

The road ahead was a long and arduous, trekking the path would not be an easy feat. One foot in front of the next, always growing one step closer to the beautiful mountain scene painted across the orange sky. The reds and yellows made their way across the dancing fields and across the bumptious river which flowed with continuous cause southbound toward the grand ocean. Following the sun rise eastward would at least keep him company on the long journey ahead. Only a weeks walk before he reached where he was going. Where he would meet his friend once more.

A light, yet comforting, breeze whispered to him, flowing between the short locks of his blond hair. Looking ahead, the scene sent a shiver down his spine. Long and arduous indeed. The mountains in the backdrop made him feel tiny and insignificant, but he tightened a fist on kept his pace—one foot in front of the next. The entire world appeared to be silent below the silent whisper of the breeze. He thought he could hear everything for miles, from small toads croaking along the river bed, to the blades of grass swaying back and forth, dancing with one another. He always allowed his mind to run wild when there was a long walk ahead. He found that it passed the time quite well, leaving the hours behind one step at a time.

Not before long, the sun had stealthily slid behind the horizon, leaving him to the moon's dull light. He would have to set up camp for the night so he would be able to make a decent dent into his journey the next day. Straying from the open field, he found a large oak tree. He threw his pack down to the ground and began to make a fire. He gathered sticks and set them up, leaning them against one another like a tipi. He held out his right hand and closed his eyes. A red aura began to overtake his outstretched arm and concentrate in his fingertips. From his fingers grew orange flames. The flames flowed from his fingertips toward the small tipi, engulfing it and setting it aflame. With the fire built, he turned his back and made his way for the tree, grabbing his pack on the way. He placed the baggage against the tree and used it as a pillow. Closing his hazel eyes once more, he commanded his entire body to glow red. A thin, almost invisible, barrier appeared around his small campsite like a bubble. The last thing he remembered before drifting off into a silent slumber was a leaf floating down from the grand oak and bursting into flame as it penetrated the red bubble.

As calm as the night was, something stirred him from his sleep. He couldn't place what it was exactly, but someone or something was out there watching him. He didn't move, rather he watched his surroundings. Bathed in moonlight, the trees swayed from side to side, sometimes having their branches rub against one another and moan out into the night. Scanning the small area he couldn't see what his higher senses told him was there. He thought that it could be a small rabbit scurrying about from its burrow behind one of the other trees. A rabbit wouldn't stir him from his sleep. He clasped his hand around the hilt of a blade that laid by his right side.

Without warning the night shrieked. Grasping his blade in his right hand, he dove forward from his pack and rolled to his feet. The fire bubble was still surrounding him as a first line of defense. His blade was held up high. The fire shield collapsed upon the blade and ignited the steel as if it were wood. He swooped the blade back and forth as he scanned the area, the flames on the steel danced in every direction as if frantically searching for the threat themselves.

Nothing was there.

Lowering the blade, the flames slowly doused themselves, returning the blade to its normal, steel, self. Sulking his shoulders down in relief, he slowly approached his pack. Then it happened. From beside the great oak came a snarling wolf-type creature. The creature stood on four legs and looked just like a wolf, but this was bigger, far, far bigger. The animal stood tall on all fours, reaching about the height of his chest. The beast had a long, wet snout which lead the beast forward. There were four massive fangs, two which protruded upward on each side of the animal's snout, and two that flashed downward. The two downward facing fangs dripped with a greenish liquid, more than likely a deadly venom. The beast slowly proceeded forward, each leg powerful leg standing on toe, ready to pounce with a deadly force.

He raised his blade but kept it unlit knowing fire would only anger such a large beast. Shifting his weight to his back foot, he closed his eyes and readied for the attack. The beast leaped forward as time began to slow down. He could see the animal lunge toward him even with his eyes closed. In an instant, his blade ignited and plunged into the animals throat, stopping it dead. He withdrew the blade and the dead body fell limply to the ground with a thud. He allowed the fire around the steel to burn off any remaining blood from the attacker. The flame then dissipated and the sword was returned to its scabbard. At least he would have something to eat in the morning. He went back to his pack and went right back to sleep, engaging his red bubble once more.

He stood up, stretching his limbs. He stared blankly at the fire before him. The fire was on a sandy area, carefully conjured as to not catch flame to the forest around him. The fire burned no substance, but simply blazed about without falter on seemingly nothing. With a wave of his hand, the fire was extinguished. Pyro stood up, and looked to the sky. He saw nothing but mist beyond the girth of the red sphere. He walked to the edge of his barrier, and outstretched a hand beyong it. He could feel the steam bursting from his gauntlet. It was raining, and each drop was made vapor as it struck his fiery sphere. Pyro realized his vision would be extremely limited unless he disappated his barrier. He did this. Each raindrop steamed as it struck his body, but he could see the distance and pressed forward.

Pyro withdrew his sword.

I'm no fool, and whoever is here must think I am. I knew I sensed more than that beast. Someone is here. The skies were clear yesterday. This rain is not of the Earth's will.

The blade engulfed in intense flames. Pyro poised himself, and glanced over his shoulders. He slowly turned in several circular postures. Who was here? Who has been following him?

It's not him. He has no control over the waters and storms. Who... or what is here?

And in less than a moment, the storms were gone. Nothing was left but puddles on the ground.

"Did you bring it?"

Pyro propelled his fiery barrier once more. He looked around but could not decipher the origin of the inquiry.

His left hand quickly deflected the strike from behind him. The attacker struck with two equally balanced blades. The attacker continuously struck with quick strikes, and Pyro blocked each one with motions of his left arm, protected by red armor. The attacker persisted striking, and Pyro effectively blocked each strike; none were able to pierce his heavy armor. The attacker struck in a downward motion with both blades fiercely towards Pyro's skull. Pyro blocked them both as they vigorously pressed against his bracers. Sparks were drawn from the conflict, and each spark engulfed into a mighty ember as it emit from the clash. With a flick of his fingers on his left hand, Pyro hurled a torrent of fire towards his assailant. The attacker back-handsprung several times as Pyro hurled several spheres of flame towards him with the motion of his hand. Each flame was dodged. Pyro then dashed toward his assailant and struck his chest with a left arm elbow strike. The attacked soared backward and bounced off of Pyro's fiery barrier as if it were a stone wall. The attacker quickly regained his posture and struck at Pyro with a downward X motion. Pyro grabbed the blades with his left hand at the point which they crossed, and held them tightly. Pyro raised his sword which had rest in his right hand during the entire conflict, and blasted his sword through both of his attacker's blades, shattering them like glass. Pyro sheathed his sword.

"Good to see you old buddy," the attacker stated.
"It's my honor," Pyro replied. "I knew you would come here, Cade."
"Yes, and I detect the energies of the Luna Blade," Cade said. "May I have it?"
"I'm afraid I cannot return it to you," Pyro stated, with his fingers lightly brushing against the hilt of his sheathed Inferno Blade.

"So why did you attack me, anyway?" Pyro asked.
"It's been so long, I wanted to spar with you a bit," Cade stated. "And I know a surprise attack would get you to use your full power. Obviously you didn't try to kill me though."
"Why would I do that?" Pyro asked. "You're my partner. Always have been"
"You've gotten good," Cade stated. "I've always been the stronger warrior, but you have surpassed me. Perhaps it is just because I did not have the Luna Blade."
"If you recall correctly..." Pyro raised an eyebrow. "I didn't even use my sword in the match, except for the finishing moments."
"Yes," Cade's tone seemed serious. "But you know how I can tap into the Luna Blade's dark energies to amplify my abilities exponentially."
"And that is precisely why I cannot give the blade to you," Pyro stated. "Cade, you can be quite powerful without the Luna Blade. Learn to use your natural abilities. Using dark power will only darken your soul."
"You know... I think you're right." Cade continued, "Although I am now inferior to your power, I must admit that I have been much happier in my journeys without depending on the Luna Blade and its dark abilities."
"So it shall be left with me," Pyro stated. "To me it is just a weapon, not a catalyst for disaster. Pay attention, I'll show ya how to really dual wield."
"Ha!" Cade chuckled. "So be it. I'll find a new weapon on our journey. But until then, I'll just use my kenetics."
It began to rain again, sizzling off of Pyro's conjured shield of flames. At that point he realized that the force he sensed earlier was not his surpise attacker, as Cade had no control of the elements of storm.
"A storm," Cade stated. "Won't it deplete your pyrokenetics to keep this shield conjured?"
"Very slowly," Pyro stated. "Small drops of rain and a few gusts aren't going to do much to my energy field."
"Well it's been a long day, us fighting and all," Cade summoned up a plantlife from the soil underneath them. "Keep that shield up and we'll call it a night?"
"Sure," Pyro ignited the plantlife with a blink. "I killed this beast earlier, we can feast on it tonight."
"Oh mister 'High and Mighty', killing a beast!" Sarcasm was detected in Cade's voice. "I'm Pyro and I think killing a small beast is a big enough deal to brag about to Cade!"
"Can't you at least make a pan to cook with out of rock with your power?" Pyro walked toward the campfire.
"I'm a kenetic not a potter!" Cade summoned a small rock before Pyro's left foot, causing the flame user to fall on his face, which Pyro snarled in response to. "Oh what's wrong, are u angry? Did that make you 'hot'? Are you getting 'steamed'? Hahahaha!"
"Oh real clever, fire puns!" Pyro started a small, unnoticable fire at the edge of Cade's hair. "I got the meat, cooking's on you tonight potter boy."
"I'm not a potter, but I'm one hell of a chef. But you couldn't kill a beast mighty enough to give me better ingredients." Cade frantically noticed his hair and padded the small flame out. "What's the big idea?"
"Ha! Whose 'hot' in the head now?" Pyro then noticed a thorny vine wrap around his leg. "What the-"
"For once I'm the thorn in your side, instead of you being one in mine!" Cade laughed at his entangled friend.
Pyro then set aflame to Cade's rear end. "Look's like I'm still a pain in your ass!" Pyro laughed uncontrollably as Cade rubbed his rear end around in the sand.
"Alright alright you win tonight!" Cade seceded. "I don't need to be rolling around like a dog with worms all night with the butt of my leggings burnt out."
"Relax, you know I didn't damage your gear. You're cooking then!" Pyro sat before the fire.

The two ate and went to sleep, as rain drops fizzled against the barrier of flames.

Chapter II: A New Presence

"Pyro? Pyro, are you awake?"
Pyro opened his eyes and saw only darkness. He tried to set a flame for light. He was not able to.
"What's going on?" Pyro groaned.
"I woke up to the rain pounding against my face," Cade stated. "Your barrier weakened and shrunk so much to the point that it stopped covering me. I used my Earthen kenetics to raise a small cavern around us to provide shelter just as your shield ceased to protect even yourself. Summoning am entire cavern takes a bit out of me, but I figured we will be here a while, so we may need a shelter. I still have 60% of my power in case we encounter any beasts you can't handle."

So that's why I'm drained of power.

"Your barrier is not so tough after all, huh?" A smirk was visible on Cade's face as the light of dawn gently beamed into the cave.

My barrier always withholds storms with ease. I knew this storm wasn't natural. Someone's been following me, someone with control of the storms meant to do this.

"Help me up," Pyro demanded. "We need to keep moving."
"You're so drained you can't stand on your own?" Cade seemed surprised. "What's the rush, anyway?"
"Just trust me. We've got to get out of this area."

"I spent all the time and energy to erect this shelter, and you wanna leave it!" Cade was supporting Pyro as he walked by carrying Pyro's right arm over his own shoulders.
"Uh huh, you can create a massive cave from nothing but not a simple cooking pan," said Pyro.
"Whatever, whatever!" said Cade. "How is your recovery going?"
"I think," Pyro hesitated. "I can stand."
"Ok good, wanna quit clinging to me now?" Said Cade.
"By all means, carry me if you want!" Said Pyro. "But you're the one who put my arm around you and held my hand!"
"I think someone, or something, has been following me," said Pyro.
"What do you mean?" Cade inquired.
"These storms, they aren't natural," Pyro looked around. "It was sunshine one moment, and storms the next. The storms most have gotten so intense last night that they somehow drained my barrier. However, it was focused enough to drain my pyrokenetics without me knowing. Neither you and I have control over hydrokenetics or electokenetics, and I haven't sensed the presence of anyone else around here. I have sensed powerful beasts, but not the human life force."
"So what you're saying is that your barrier was defeated by gazelle urine?" Cade stated.
"That guess may not be too far off," a voice declared.
"Whose there?!" Pyro withdrew his blades, one emitting bright flames, the other, dark shadows. Cade took a stance readying his hands for battle.
"I don't see anyone!" Cade obeserved frantically.
"You see nothing?!" While Pyro may have become a stronger warrior, he still trusted Cade's superior intellect and battle prowess. "Who the hell said that?"
"Up here, humans!" The voice was heard. "Look into the tree 46 degrees to your South."
"Um, sorry but I don't see anyone in this tree," Pyro stated.
"Look there, on that branch," Cade oberved. "Is that a white cat?"
"At last you have spotted me!"
"WHAT THE HELL, A TALKING CAT!" Pyro stumbled back. "CADE LET'S GET OUT OF HERE!"
"Hold on, hold on," Cade was calm. "Who is possessing this cat?"
"I am not possessed, you fool," the cat stated. "What is so strange about a feline such as myself speaking?"
"CADE!! CAN WE RUN NOW!?" Pyro had sheathed his blades so he could run easier.
"Even if you ran," the cat stated, "I could easily catch you."
"So how is a cat so intelligent?" Cade asked.
"It is not your mind that gives you your kenetic abilities," the cat stated. "It is your soul, your spirit. Have you never wondered how you got your abilities? It comes from the strength of your soul."
"Ok," Pyro stated. "But this doesn't explain how you're a TALKING CAT!"
"If you'd allow me to finish," the cat hesitated to lick its left paw. "You've fought creatures with kenetic abilities, although they were very savage and uncivilized. Oh, and probably couldn't speak. Superstitions, black cats, they come from true events. You've heard stories of Egyptians worshipping cats, yes? Have you not wondered why so much mythical legends involve cats? Every creature you meet has an essence of a soul. Us felines simply have the strongest souls. Thus, a handful of us felines whose souls are gifted with kenetic abilities find ourselves able to speak. At least, that's what I'd assume. I am yet to meet another of my kind that could speak. However, I know they must exist."
The cat's eyes peered into Cade's soul. Cade noticed the solid white cat had one green eye and one blue. "So you're a cat with uncommon eyes and a soul. Why are you here?"
"Green eye," Pyro spoke. "Blue eye... You must be kenetic yourself. Green and blue, the colors of hydrokenetics and electrokenetics. You're the one who attacked me!"
"What is your name?" Cade asked.
"Call me... New." The cat stated.
"HEY HEY HEY!" Pyro exclaimed. "This is NOT what we meant by 'New Pyro and Cade Adventures!' It's not New comma Pyro comma and Cade'! It's just a new version of the old stories!"
"I believe your friend has gone insane," New stated.
"I think he's still struggling with the talking cat concept," Cade said. "So why do we call you New?"
"I was thinking more like 'Noo', now 'New', if you please," the cat insisted.
"Theoretically we are verbal, so how do you know how I'm spelling it?" Cade asked.
"Ummm," the cat hesitated. "I'm psychic, it's part of my uh, abilities."
"What am I thinking of right now!?" Pyro asked.
"Probably something homoerotic," Noo said. "I'm not really telepathic."
"Listen," Cade commanded. "I'm the author, and I say we spell it 'New'. That way the title is an unintended pun. It'll make up for our terrible puns last night."
"Yes, I observed your foreplay last night," New stated. "I've been following for quite some time."
"Oh, so are you some kind of gay cat?" Pyro was trying to redeem himself from New's previous insult.
"I'm female," New stated.
"Don't you notice the female voice?" Cade asked.
"You're the one writing, how am I supposed to know how you intend things to sound?" Pyro was made a fool again.
"Shall we move on?" New asked.
"Right," Pyro spoke. "Why did you attack me?"
"I did not attack you," New stated. "If I attacked you, you would be dead. I was merely testing your power. Why do you think I left you with enough power to wield your blades, and your friend with enough power to use his kenetics? It was merely a test. I did not wish for your to die."
"A cat, defeat me?!" Pyro asked. "I'd like to see you try!"
"Pyro," Cade began. "It's obvious that this cat attacks with stealth."
"You fools," New said. "Stealth is not a necessity. I am stronger than you may think."
"So why were you following Pyro?" Cade asked.
"Your friend, Pyro is it?" New asked. "I've sensed a dark energy about him. As soon as I smelled it, I decided to follow him."
"Right, the Luna Blade!" Pyro stated. "Don't worry, the blade doesn't get to me like it does to Cade. So you can be on your way."
"The dark force of that blade, it is stronger than any force I've sensed in years," New stated. "As long as you have it, I will follow."
"REALLY Cade?" Pyro spoke. "We're using the Luna Blade for plot again? If we have another freaking tournam- Wait you're not going to follow us!"
"HA!" Cade laughed. "I bet you wish you'd give me the blade now!"
"I do prefer your scent, sir Cade," the cat jumped onto Cade's shoulder. Cade began to sneeze uncontrollably.
"I'm ah... ah... ahchoolergic, er, alergic!" Cade said. "So let me get this right... 137 adventures, and the only female I manage to attract is another species and makes me sneeze!"
"I'm not attracted to you, human," New stated. "Your scent... your soul... seems both dark and light. That is all."

Wielding the Luna Blade for so long must have slightly corrupted Cade's soul. I'll need to be careful.

New jumped upon Pyro's shoulder, resting on the side which the Luna Blade's hilt could be grasped, almost as if it were protecting it. The warriors continued on.
