Chapter 4: We Got Movement

The mortician was understandably nervous about having to perform the autopsies of the drowned students. Although not a superstitious man by nature, and more than used to working around dead bodies, knowing that the three corpses before him had somehow killed a police diver did not make him enthusiastic about the task.

As he debated whether or not to keep a shotgun handy in case the corpses became too lively for his tastes, the back of his head met with the cold steel butt of a 1911 pistol.

Casull holstered his handgun and dragged the mortician into a corner of the room while Zhang stood guard at the entrance. Hurriedly, Casull drew the three bodies together and thrust his palm forward at them. Breathing heavily, he conjured up a small ball of black fire in front of his and, and prepared to incinerate the bodies with it.

Before he could release it, he felt a strong aura of ki right behind him, and turned around to see two women break into the room and engage Zhang in combat. Casull’s eyes widened as he noticed both of them held swords.

Forgetting that Zhang was an accomplished martial artist, Casull’s instincts took over as he planted himself squarely in front of the women, and catch her sword’s blade with the palms of his hands.

Sliding his right hand down the blade, he concentrated all his strength into his arms and pushed in opposite directions with his hands, shattering the blade into two. As both his hands crossed his chest, Casull jumped up and landed a flying kick directly in the pit of his opponent’s stomach, knocking her back towards the other assailant.

Motoko saw her sister come flying back towards her in a flurry of motion, and tried her best to dodge. She was knocked off balance by her sister’s body, but regained control as she charged forwards. Her training had covered extensively how to dispatch both humans and demons with the greatest speed. Motoko wasn’t sure what had prevented her sister from cutting down the man in front of her, but it should have been easy to overcome an unarmed opponent.

Casull was a strong believer in the philosophy of “A strong offense is the best defense”. Not waiting for the second woman to come any closer, he dashed forward and launched a vicious low kick aimed at Motoko’s knee. As his right shin made contact with Motoko’s outer knee, her leg collapsed and she fell backwards onto the ground. As she fell, Casull noticed that her head was facing straight up, and instinctively brought his right fist hammering down on Motoko’s forehead, sending her pummeling headfirst into the floor.

Leaping back, he raised his head and did a scan of the area, in case someone else should attack. To his left, he noticed Zhang rushing towards the first woman, not to attack, but to help her up. Puzzled, he heard Zhang hastily utter what sounded like an apology. Not understanding Japanese, Casull hung back, ready to re-engage if necessary.

The woman and Zhang seemed to reach an understanding, as he saw them relax. Zhang motioned for Casull to come forward, as she walked over to help the second assailant off the ground.

“What happened?” Casull asked, in his usual laconic fashion.

Zhang grinned sheepishly as she lifted her charge to her feet. “Casull, these are the Aoyama sisters, some of the last demon hunters in Japan. We tried to get in contact with them before the mission started, but couldn’t reach them.”

“Charmed to meet you two. I apologies for our, ahem, unusual introduction. I hope I didn’t leave a bad first impression?” Casull bowed slightly towards the elder Aoyama.
“Not at all,” Tsuroko bowed and replied with an unusually accurate grasp of the English system of pronunciation. “It has been a long time since I’ve met a warrior with skills as formidable as yours.”

“It was mostly luck. I was exhausted after the second bout.” Casull shrugged.

“I’d love to hear more of your self deprecating stories, but this young lady here really needs to get some medical attention,” Zhang huffed, dragging Motoko towards the door. “Might I suggest you dispose of the zombies now? We can talk later.
