Chapter One

My name is Dethnari. Since that day, I sought revenge against that beast that took from me my love. Yet even in my state of anger, logic still managed to own my mind. In no way could I take that monsters life with my current skills. Thus, I sought out a man named Nerofer, who was rumoured to be a Master Swordsman, who lived in the marshlands of Karopa. Immediately I set off, and by the time I reached his abode, I was naught but wreck. Cuts, bruises, twigs entangled within my hair... Nothing but a disgrace. Nerofer however, did not see as I did. Within two days, I had a longsword within my hands, and was beginning to learn my way. Yet his training, was not of the usual kind. No training hall, no attack dummies, nothing but treks and real experience. In time, I lost my long sword, and began to unsheathe a pair of old long daggers. As my speed and accuracy increased, we began to hunt larger, more ferocious creatures, until one day we found a near ruined hut, deep in the Sarkujibu mountains. I stared at the rundown hut, and when I turned to question my new master, he had left. <What am I to do?> I wondered, but only had time for such a thought before a great thunderstorm ravaged the skies, and rain began to pelt the hard earth. I looked around for shelter, but found only the hut. Apon entering the hut, I realised several things about this ancient hut. It was obviously not as it seemed. While rundown on the outside, it was as though it had only just been created on the inside, with a stone floor, and wooden yet sturdy walls. Potions lay bubbling apon a table as though some mad alchemist lived here, but as I gazed down at an open book on yet another table, I realised this was not too far from the truth. Not an alchemist, but a sorcorer of some kind. <But how can this be?!> I thought, as according to historical texts, the entirity of the Magi Clans had been exterminated several hundred years ago, by the Nefru, a race of human-like creatures who dwelled deep in these mountains. So how could it be that a surviver of such an extinct clan, lived in a place alongside those who had been his enemies?

Of course, I wasn't allowed time to think of such things any longer. The middle of the room had began to cave in, but yet it did so much too slowly to be anything of the sort. Without thinking, I lept onto the slowly decending stone tile. My decent lasted for what seemed like an age, down for what seemed like a mile, yet was of course not true. As I reached the bottom, I gazed around a large cavern, with candles on all sides that seemed to never extinguish. My mind was racing several laps by this point. <How could something like this exist here, without even being known?! Surely thieves had found such a thing by now, and yet the cavern was filled with treasures. Ancient books and artifacts, and of course more bubbling potions. A growl came from within a dark patch at the far corner of the room, where a very small dragon lay with it's eyes fixed apon me. My hands shot to the daggers at my sides, yet they halted themselves several inches away. I attempted to move them, but to no avail. They were stuck in place. An old man sat in a wooden chair several metres from a blazing fireplace, build within the rock face. "Come now child, you won't be needing those." The man stood up slowly, and made his way to my position. He had a long white beard which parted a short way from his face in two, and continued down to midway on his robe, which was black with several blue moons covering it. "Ah so this is Nerofer's new pupil. Well, should I say was. Your my pupil now, so you won't be needing those" With a few words I could not understand, the man clicked his fingures and my daggers, as well as their sheathes, disappeared before my very eyes. "Now child" he said "Your name is Dethnari, am I correct?" I nodded, as there was nothing else I could do. "Excellent. We begin your magic training immediately. Yes, I said magic training. Apparently you have the potential I've been looking for to continue many generations of humans who have the ability to use such power. Well, let me have a look at you." He looked me up and down, then closed his eyes. "What are you..." "Do not interupt child, I need to concentrate." For several minutes he just stood there, eyes closed, whilst I could not move anything but my head. "Indeed... It would seem that Nerofer is not wrong. Interesting. Well I do not doubt his judgement, you must be a very hard worker if such a man as he would teach you. Still, you look mightily unfed, and as such we shall begin tomorrow after you are filled and have had rest."

That night, I could not sleep. How is it, that I, a mere human woman of 21 years old, could use magic? Such a thing was already nothing but history... No matter how much anyone had tried throughout the years, no one could accomplish the harnessing of ancient magics. So how is it that I could be capable of such things? I would have to wait until morning, but until then, I would have to regain my strength. I turned onto my side, and as I stared at the wall, strange images began to play infront of my eyes. Images of battles, memories, and the mage clans. As I watched, my eyes grew weary. So it was with these images in mind, that I finally fell asleep, to await the morning.
