Chapter 26: The Stuff of Nightmares

“You!” Siegfried roared, as he slowly rose to a standing position. “You....”

“Surprised to see me again, old friend?” his nemesis chuckled darkly. The armor known only as Nightmare advanced on the German champion, the Dark Blade in his hands.

“He has my sword,” Motoko panicked. Who knew what he had done to it, or how much of its power he had managed to access.

“Before either party could act, the walls of the chamber parted, and a flashbang came sailing through from the other side. Instinctively, all parties ducked for cover as the grenade discharged.

No fans of unnecessary speech, Casull and his small squad wasted no time in charged into the battle.

Chapter 27: The Calibur of the Edge

“You’ve grown slow, Siegfried,” Nightmare taunted, as he delivered a vicious diving slash at Siegfried. “Do you feel the weight of the years upon you now? Or can you not muster the courage to face me-”

Nightmare was abruptly cut off as the fastst triggerwork Casull had ever performed sent a volley of bullets ricocheting off the back of his back armor. He turned around to see Casull aiming a concussion blast at him, and deftly rolled out of the way.

Taking advantage of this opportunity, Siegfried dealt a mightily backslash to Nightmare, knocking him down into an open tunnel.

“That was too easy,” Casull reflected mentally, as Nightmare failed to emerge. “No wielder of the Soul Edge will go down that easily...”

His train of though was cut off as the chamber walls began glowing a deep red. He recognized the energy signature at once; the crystals were unstable and prone to explosion. The fighting raging on around him must have disturbed them, and they would probably explode any moment now.

And Nightmare was still not in sight. Damn him! He must have known what was going to happen, and run off!

Breaking away from the fight, he dove down the dark hole in pursuit of Nightmare.

Chapter 28: Lord of the Night

“Fools! By the time they realize it, it will be too late!” Nightmare cackled in pure ecstasy, having tricked several of his most hated enemies into the unstable chamber. The sound of fighting carried on down through the escape tunnel, bringing the fighters closer and closer to their demise.

Without warning, he ran into an obstruction. As he looked hard at hit thought he dim light, he saw that it had a form resembling that of a human, with his arms outstretched and palms extended forwards..

“You! What the hell are you doing down here! Why aren’t you fighting or saving your little friends,” Nightmare panicked, drawing his sword.

The shadows of the tunnel were long and dark, providing perfect kindling material for Darkfire. It fed on the darkness, on the absence of light, and devoured everything in its path.

Been really busy as of late. I fear the quality and quantity are both decreasing.

Chapter 29: Run, Casull, Run!

A brilliant red light blinded Casull as the explosion of the Crystal Chamber rumbled through the tunnel. Casull ran as fast as he could to escape. The rush of debris caught up with him just as the exit came into view, carried him out of the cave, and dumped him in a clump of desert shrubs next to a canyon wall.

Shaking his head and gathering his wits, he noticed a plume of dirt and smoke off in the distance, further down the canyon, which probably marked the entrance to the cave complex. Looking around at the debris surrounding him for anything of value, he found the Hinata Dark Blade conspicuously absent, probably having been destroyed along with Nightmare.

With nothing left to do, we slowly, painfully, made his way back to the entrance.

He did not except a hero’s welcome, but he certainly did not anticipate the widespread accusations of dereliction of duty that many of his teammates launched at him for failing to warn them, though, in his defense, he did point out that Siegfried, among others, had also noticed the trap and managed to conduct a thoroughly competent evacuation, so there was no real damage done. Besides, he had managed to destroy Nightmare, which many agreed was an acceptable excuse.

Motoko, for one, did not approve of his actions, and did not hesitate in criticizing Casull’s “most foolish, irresponsible, and dishonorable” abandonment of his teammates.

Casull promptly told her to shove it and immediately left to take point as the group made its way back to friendly territory.

quantity, maybe, but not quality ^_^

Chapter 30: Breaking Loose

The chilling cold of the desert night stood in stark contrast to the searing heat of the day. powerful gusts of wind shaped and re-shaped the endless sand dunes populating the desert. In a crude sort of valley between the dunes, the remains of the Knights took refuge from the searching eyes of pursuing demons.

“Casull hasn’t reported back in a while now.” Motoko observed nerviously, glanced at the section of the desert Casull had gone to scout.

“Give him some more time, I’m sure he hasn’t run away again or anything,” one of the soldiers remarked, raising a pair of binoculars to his eye. “Or maybe he has. That would be such a great loss to our war effort, Casull disappearing.”

Motoko decided not to reply, and lay her exhausted body down in the war sand. The cool night breeze of the desert relaxed her body. It had been so long since she had enjoyed a proper rest.... in bed.... with sheets...

Motoko suddenly realized that she was sleeping, and responded by jerking open her eyes. Her first reaction was to wish that they had remained closed. The bodies of several soldiers lay scattered around the camp, and the survivors –Casull among them- were tied up along with her in the middle of the camp. Demons surrounded the prisoners, leering and jesting. A blood soaked Siegfried was restrained at the other side of the mass of prisoners, and was reciting a long list of curses he had originally compose for Casull at them. At last, though, the demons guarding them grew weary of the seemingly endless outburst , and one of them punched Siegfried so hard that he flew up in the air and landed on the Casull’s side.

Casull, meanwhile, was laughing with glee inside, not the least because of Siegfried’s misfortune, though he found that satisfying as well. Siegfried seemed to be soaked in a large amount of demon’s blood. All the better for Casull.

Casull slowly bent over and bit down on Siegfried’s shoulder, sucking out as much blood as possible from the jacket Siegfried was wearing. Siegfried turned sheet white as he realized what Casull was planning, and rolled as far away as possible when Casull let go.

“Casull-can, are you ok?” Motoko yelled. Casull looked like he was violently ill from what he had done; he was twitching and moaning on the ground, like a man with sever fever.

Casull felt like he would die; he was disoriented and dizzy; his spirits were high and low at the same time; his head felt like it was going to go left and right all at once. his breathing accelerated to inhuman speeds, his heart beat on and on, faster and faster.
A fierce burning heat arose in the pit of his stomached, and spread though his being.

Suddenly, his entire being was engulfed in a pitch black flame that burned the ropes binding him away into ashes. Casull laughed and turned to face his captors.

As he turned around, Motoko caught a glimpse of his face, twisted with hate and sadistic pleasure, like some angry god ready to pass his judgment on those who had slighted him. This was not Casull, was it?
