CORNWELL SLAMS REPORTING OF POSITIVE DRUG TESTS
Posted by Mike Florio on October 25, 2008, 12:12 p.m.
In some of our discussions yesterday with league insiders regarding the news of a rash of positive tests triggering violations of the policy regarding anabolic steroids AND RELATED SUBSTANCES, concerns were raised regarding the fact that news of suspensions not yet been resolved via appeal had been disclosed to the media.

Then we saw quotes from attorney David Cornwell in Chris Mortensen’s story on ESPN.com, in which Cornwell raised those very same concerns.

“The recent reports about pending appeals by players who are alleged to have used weight loss supplements reflect the most egregious violation of the NFL steroid policy,” Cornwell said in a statement obtained by Mortensen. “The foundation of the policy is both a player’s right to appeal and an absolute right to confidentiality. By leaking this story, the ’source’ is clearly attempting to put their thumb on the scale of justice and harm these men.”

Though some in the media think it’s uncool (actually, the technical journalism term is “douchey”) to speculate about the identity of a reporter’s sources, we’ve heard concerns from league insiders regarding the possibility that FOX 31’s Josina Anderson has a mole in the NFL Players Association.

While (in our view) it’s not wrong for Anderson to use whatever she can get from wherever she can get it, it’s clearly wrong if someone in the NFLPA is blatantly violating the confidentiality of the league’s drug programs by leaking the names of players who have received notice of a suspension.

Some league insiders believe that not even the player himself should be permitted to leak the news (as we presume Jags receiver Matt Jones recently did to Mort), but we think that the player has every right to talk if he wants, since he’s the one whom the confidentiality provision is aimed at protecting. In this case, Anderson’s report strongly implies that the players she named — Saints running back Deuce McAllister and Saints defensive end Will Smith — weren’t among her sources.

So we contacted Cornwell and asked him to elaborate. Here’s what he told us, via e-mail:

“The author of the first report should be denied credentials and access to NFL games and other league events until she discloses her source. Protecting players’ rights to confidentiality under the Policy is far more important than protecting the First Amendment rights of the coward who leaked confidential information or the competitive interest of a writer who is trying to scoop her colleagues. The source knew he/she was doing something wrong and the writer encouraged it by offerring anonymity. They have no legitimate interests to protect.”

Cornwell compared the leakage of the names of the players who tested positive to other restrictions imposed on league insider. “The league restricts free speech everyday by fining and disciplining players who truthfully criticize game officials or truthfully acknowledge their illnesses or injuries,” he said.

We then asked Cornwell to clarify his position that the reporter should face some consequence for disclosing the names of the players without revealing the source, since we still didn’t believe that there’s anything wrong with what Anderson did.

“Everybody involved knows the confidentiality rules,” Cornwell said. “The right to confidentiality overrides a reporter’s desire to break a story. There is no public interest or public right to know. The confidentiality rule presumes that nobody has right to know while the process moves forward. Confidentiality is the cornerstone of every workplace testing program. It must be protected against any perceived competing interest — especially an unrelated party’s interest.”

Holy crap. We actually think we’re beginning to change our mind on this one.

We’ll defer final judgment until the next time someone tries to leak to us news of a player who has tested positive, but whose appeal has not been finalized.

So these underlines are consider as opinions or ideas, or something to consider our thoughts? umm...

MANGINI GETS PRESSED ON INJURY REPORTING HABITS
Posted by Mike Florio on October 24, 2008, 10:06 p.m.
As legend has it, Jets coach Eric Mangini refuses to acknowledge hamstring injuries. So when a player has a hamstring injury, it’s described generally as “leg” — which is only a half-click above simply referring to the injury as “body.”

Mangini has been using the “leg” label on kicker Mike Nugent, who has yet to play this season.

And so, on Friday, Dan Leberfeld of Jets Confidential opted to press Mangini, and Jets P.R. guy Bruce Speight opted to try to make a cameo appearance once the softballs turned into splitters. (We know a little bit about baseball, unfortunately.)

And it went a little something like this . . . hit it:

Leberfeld: “What exactly is wrong with Mike Nugent? What’s the specific injury?”

Mangini: “He’s got a leg injury.”

Leberfeld: “But specifically, what is it?”

Mangini: “You know, I don’t talk about the specifics of injuries, and I think you know that.”

Leberfeld: “Is it a hamstring?”

Mangini: “It’s a leg injury.”

Leberfeld: “Because most teams in the league will mention a hamstring. Why are you against that?”

Mangini: “You know, I think we’ve discussed this quite a bit, but it’s something that I believe in philosophically, and I hope you can respect that.”

Leberfeld: “Because even New England lists hamstrings, and I know you have a background there. You might be the only team in the league that doesn’t list hamstrings. Why philosophically do you go down that road?”

Mangini: “It’s something that I believe in and something that we’ve consistently done, and I don’t anticipate changing any time in the near future.”

Leberfeld: “What about toe related to foot? Like [defensive end Calvin] Pace says he hurt his toe. Can you verify that?”

Mangini: “I can verify what I put on the injury [report].”

Leberfeld: “Once again, why can’t you say ‘toe’? What’s the philosophical reason for that?”

Speight: “Dan — Dan — Dan.”

Leberfeld: “No, Bruce, you don’t dictate the question. What can’t you say ‘toe’?”

Mangini: “Dan, were two-and-a-half years into this process.”

Leberfeld: “No, but it doesn’t mean it’s right. I mean, I read injury reports around the league and they list these things.”

Speight: “Dan.”

Mangini: “I appreciate your opinion, Dan.”

Leberfeld: “Yes, but you can’t tell me what to ask, Bruce.”

Speight: “I’m not, I’m not.”

Leberfeld: “You’re interrupting my question.”

Speight: “I am. You’re right.”

Leberfeld: “All right. I won’t ask — what can I ask, Bruce? Give me a head’s up.”

Making the exchange even more interesting is that, in the transcript of the press conference circulated by the team, here’s the only reference to the exchange:

On K Mike Nugent’s injury…

He has a leg injury.

On what specifically is Nugent’s injury…

I don’t talk about the specifics of injuries.

Amazingly (and, frankly, impressively), the Jets didn’t splice the awkward moments between Mangini, Leberfeld, and Speight out of the video of the press conference that is posted on the team’s official web site. The fun starts at roughly 6:15 of the clip.

NYGiants vs NYJets in superbowl is my lifelong dream, as similar the Subway series of Mets vs Yankee playoff before... it was fun and best memories... I would love to see that happen! X)

But 1 thing I admitt, I was wrong abt Cards vs Panthers, I thought the Cards gonna win the game bec of Boldin WR is back after missing 1 game since knockout by Jets FS and SS smashing to his face, and cracking his sinus, however, he was posing to have a big comeback from his injury, which he did... But, it wasn't enough X(

Plus also Garica screwed up on his final plays, which he would had won and beaten cowboy but, so sadly they didn't.

Buffalo VS Jets news-

On offense, the line is underwhelming to say the least. True, the Jets entered the game ranked fourth in run defense with massive Kris Jenkins anchoring the middle of their 3-4 alignment. Still, gaining 30 yards on 17 attempts as Buffalo did was embarrassing.

"We know we have to do a better job," said center Duke Preston, who served as Jenkins' rag doll much of the game.

SHOES: Why No. 4? For Third-and-15 at the 15
Published: Sat, November 15, 2008 - 12:15pm EDT

By Bob Wischusen
Bob Wischusen is in his seventh season as the New York Jets' radio play-by-play voice.

File Under: Eric Mangini, Thomas Jones, Laveranues Coles, New England Patriots, Brett Favre, Dustin Keller

change font email article 11/15 — The Jets didn’t get Brett Favre to light up a highlight reel. The Jets didn’t get Brett Favre so they’d be on the big TV game more often. The Jets didn’t get Brett Favre so ESPN would have reporters on their beat and extra cameras in their locker room. The Jets didn’t get Brett Favre to score points like a pinball machine, although it doesn’t hurt when it happens.

The Jets got Brett Favre for third-and-15 at their own 15 on the road in New England in overtime in a must-have spot that’s probably about a 10 percent success rate play for most QBs in the NFL, and that might be generous.

They got Brett Favre because they know that not only do they need a QB with the talent to make that play happen but they need a player that marries that talent with a total calm to go along with it in the most intense pressurized moment.

Favre not only has the ability to make that play, but he’s not worried about needing it when 70,000 Patriots fans are screaming at the tops of their lungs after Randy Moss makes an amazing catch to send an unlosable game into an overtime that Eric Mangini couldn’t actually believe the Jets were in.

But they’ve got No. 4, and not only is he much more comfortable with this offense now than he had ever been before, he also seems more than happy to spread the ball around to as versatile and deep a group of playmakers as the Jets have ever had.

Favre can hand it off to the top rusher in the AFC in Thomas Jones. He can throw across his body into traffic to convert another big third down to Laveranues Coles. He can do the same for a TD to Jerricho Cotchery. He can get the ball into the hands of Leon Washington in any number of ways and know there’s at least a chance that once Washington has the ball no matter where he is on the field, it could be six.

And he can drop back on third-and-15 from his own 15 on a play he has to have in the most intense moment a team could face in a regular-season game with arguably their season hanging in the balance, and he can throw it to a rookie tight end named Dustin Keller that is emerging as a target that has the right to be called Favre’s favorite as much as any other player in this offense.

In order to have a magical season, a team has clear-cut defining moments when it must execute, and some of those moments come on the road. The Jets had that moment in the fourth quarter at Buffalo and put together an eight-minute drive when they had to have it to ice a huge win. They had that moment in the fourth quarter at Foxboro when they needed to put together a drive to break ... a 24-24 tie in a game that actually felt like they were losing after blowing a 24-6 lead.

And then the drive that trumps them all ... in an overtime that must have seemed like a bad dream in the first place, third-and-15 at their own 15, game over if they don’t convert, most likely division race over if they lose.

And an 18-year veteran Hall of Fame quarterback finds a rookie tight end that was about 6 years old when he first threw a pass in the NFL — and hits that rookie for a first down. Drive alive. Season now more than alive.

Maybe this will be a magical year.

Ira Said:Sat, November 15, 2008 - 12:30pm EDT "Bob, Your post is perfectly written. Everbody knows how big a fan of Chad i am. But i have to say no way does Chad convert on that 3rd and 15 in OT. The Pats would not have to worry about the long ball and would have never dropped back into the coverage they did. They would have played press coverage instead. This is not a knock on Chad. He just can't make the throws Favre does. GO JETS!!!!"
