Elite 8 - NFC
#4 1991 Washington Redskins vs. #1 1985 Chicago Bears
A match match-up of two teams that are considered by many to be the best two teams to ever win a Superbowl ended up very one sided. The Bears defense was downright stifling against the Redskins offense, allowing just 181 total yards all game and no points. Walter Payton had a great tournament leading up to this game, and got 100+ yards on the ground, but it was the passing of Jim McMahon that had the Redskins in fits.
Bears win, 30-0 (J.McMahon - 14 of 23 for 182 yards and 2 TD's)

#3 1992 Dallas Cowboys vs. #2 1989 San Francisco 49ers
A great game that came down to the final seconds. Joe Montana and the Niners found themselves in a position very familiar, down by 3 with less than two minutes to go. Sadly this time Montana could not do what he was so famous for, lead the team to a last second victory. Both QB's were very efficient, but Troy Aikman and the talented Cowboys were slightly better today.
Cowboys win, 21-18 (T. Aikman - 16 of 20 for 229 yards and 2 TD's)

Elite 8 - AFC
#12 1988 Cincinnati Bengals vs. #1 1972 Miami Dolphins
For three quarters the Miami Dolphins looked to continue their undefeated ways, leading 12-10 behind a tough defense and a running game that was known for grinding out the close games. The Bengals hung in the game though, and in the fourth quarter exploded for 24 points. The Dolphins had no answer for a renewed pass attack, and their own pass attack faltered badly when it counted.
Bengals win, 34-19 (B. Esiason - 16 of 22 for 228 yards and 2 TD's)

#7 2000 Baltimore Ravens vs. #6 1998 Denver Broncos
The Ravens, mostly known for their punishing defense and ball control offense, had to do something completely out of character this game. Denver's John Elway went the entire game untouched and torched the Ravens vaunted defense for 300 yards passing and 3 TD's. Unfortunately for Denver, Jamal Lewis took over the second half of the ball game, scoring three TD's of his own, and the Raven's defense, knocked around all game, stood firm when it counted.
Ravens win, 31-24 (J. Lewis - 22 carries for 97 yards and 3 TD's)

Final Four

#3 1992 Dallas Cowboys vs. #1 1985 Chicago Bears
The defenses really shined in the NFC finals. Both were unyielding in their resolve to keep the other team's offense out of the end zone, and both nearly attained that feat. In the end, as is usual with defensive stands, it was an unsung and almost unknown player that made the difference. Matt Suhey of the Bears was the lone man to find the end zone the entire game. Possibly the two greatest running backs in NFL history were kept from scoring, although Payton was more of a factor with 108 yards on 22 carries. Troy Aikman, despite getting sacked 4 times by the bears defense, was efficient if nothing else, but it wasn't enough to send the Cowboys to the finals.
Bears win, 13-3 (M. Suhey - 11 touches for 89 yards and 1 TD)

#12 1988 Cincinnati Bengals vs. #7 2000 Baltimore Ravens
The Baltimore Ravens of 2000 had what many would regard as the best defense in history. The Bengals of 1988 are regarded as being the team that lost the Superbowl in the final minutes to one of the greatest QB's of all time. In what has to be the biggest upset in a tournament filled with them, the Bengals not only exposed the chinks in the Ravens defensive armor, but the ran right through them like a freight train. The Ravens had no answer for Ickey Woods or James Brooks, both of whom had 100 yards rushing. In fact, the games deciding score was made in the second quarter on a run by Brooks that capped off a back breaking 90 yards drive. The Ravens defense finally got their act together in the second half, but the Bengals defense wasn't about to give up the lead they had built. The 1988 Bengals, a foot note in the history of the NFL, are on a mission of respect, and they have one stop left on their way to it.
Bengals win, 29-13 (I. Woods - 18 carries for 101 yards and 2 TD's)

The Finals
Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image
#12 1988 Cincinnati Bengals vs. #1 1985 Chicago Bears
Was there really any question? The Bengals defied a lot of odds to get to the finals, upsetting a lot of teams that were probably better. The Bears, on the other hand, belonged here. In the end, the Bears stood tall, and there was never really a doubt. The Bengals would have the lead twice in this game, once at 3-0, and again at 6-3, but it was really all Bears. They did it with defense. They did it behind the running of Walter Payton, and they did it behind the arm of controversial QB Jim McMahon. Boomer Esiason was punished most of the game, either running for his life or taking one of the four sacks the Bears delivered. Boomer also threw two picks. So what did we learn if anything? Likely that the subject of greatest team ever is open to many interpretations, and ultimately that the old saying is true. On any given Sunday, any team can win. The Bengals did it against several teams before coming up short. But for the sake of this argument, the 1985 Bears proved they were the better team.
Bears win, 27-6 (J. McMahon - 13 of 24 for 146 yards and 3 TD's, 1 INT)

Well, the 99 Rams basically lost because the 02 Bucs had a slightly worse offense, but a much better defense. And that offense wasn't that bad. The defense lead the league in total defense, points allowed and interceptions for the first time since our eventual winner, the 85 Bears. The offense had a pretty good run game with Pitman and Alstott, and the passing game wasn't too bad either. It's not a stretch to see the team that beat the explosive offense of the Okaland Radiers in the Superbowl in 02 take out the Rams.

And that Bengals team gets no respect. Boomer Esiason was the league MVP that year, they had a damn good coach, and they had a very good defensive line. They led the NFL in rushing, ponts scored, and total yards gained that year. To top that off, they had nine Pro Bowlers. And the only reason, some could argue, that they lost that Superbowl is because one of their players went on a cocaine binge the night before the game, and another of their key players got both legs broken during a run by Roger Craig.
