1995-1996 Free Agency - Day 1 Kenny Anderson, SG - Milwaukee Bucks (6 years, 82.1 million) Tim Hardaway, PG - Orlando Magic (6 years, 73.5 million) Spud Webb, PG - Chicago Bulls (MLE) Christian Laettner, C - Los Angeles Lakers (MLE) Benoit Benjamin, C - Atlanta Hawks (5 years, 39.6 million) As of day 1 we are 1 for 2. We went after Tim Hardaway hoping to get him and move either him or Anthony to SG, but he signed for big bucks in Orlando. Shaq is a bit more appealing than Big Country I suppose. We've got an offer out on Doug Christie for 4 years, 23.2 million, and as of now it's the best one he's gotten, so hopefully we can get him. Probably need to target a Power Forward moving on. 1995-1996 Free Agency - Day 2 Shawn Bradley, C - Miami Heat (6 years, 74.9 million) Doug Christie, SG - Vancouver Grizzlies (4 years, 23.1 million) We got our guy here, and we've got an offer out on a pretty good PF in the way of Chris Gatling. We know we aren't going to contend for a title this season, but we want to at least make some of the games competitive. I believe Christie and Gatling can do that. 1995-1996 Free Agency - Day 3 Walt Williams, SF - New York Knicks (6 years, 54.9 million) Todd Day, SG - Philadelphia 76ers (4 years, 24.8 million) We got outbid by the Knicks for the services of Gatling, and right now we are trying to play with the money to see if we can't bump the offer up, or find a cheaper alternative. 1995-1996 Free Agency - Day 4 Chris Gatling, PF - Vancouver Grizzlies (4 years, 17.4 million) After doing a little scouting, we couldn't really come up with a viable #2 option for Gatling, so we had to pony up the extra money to get him. I'm gonna call out first FA period ever a success. 1995-1996 Free Agency - Day 5 Kevin Willis, C - Sacramento Kings (1 year, 1 million) John Salley, C - Minnesota Timberwolves (1 year, 965k) And so ends our first Free Agency period. As we head into training camps, here is our roster.
Next up is training camps and then the season. |

1995 - 1996 Season Preview The Grizzlies open their inaugural season with as many questions, hopes and even dreams as any first year professional sports franchise could have. After drafting Bryant "Big Country" Reeves in the first round of the draft earlier this year, they had a lot of holes to fill. The team was mostly filled in the expansion draft, and the biggest name is notably Point Guard Greg Anthony. Free Agency provided two more key acquisitions in SG Doug Christie and PF Chris Gatling. Both bring solid defensive presence and an ability to score to the team. Without any further ado, here is the depth chart for your Vancouver Grizzlies. Posted Image - Center - Bryant "Big Country" Reeves Rich Manning Kenny Gattison - Power Forward - Chris Gatling Ashraf Amaya Kenny Gattison - Small Forward - Chris King Blue Edwards Lawrence Moten - Shooting Guard - Doug Christie Byron Scott Blue Edwards - Point Guard - Greg Anthony Byron Scott Lawrence Moten The Grizz will be focusing on a slow and steady offensive game plan, trying to get the ball inside early and often to their bigs. On defense, look for them to use the defensive abilities of the guards to their advantage by pressing the other team into making plays along the full length of the court. 1995 - 1996 Season Schedule Lakers @ Grizzlies Grizzlies @ Warriors Grizzlies @ Trail Blazers Heat @ Grizzlies Hawks @ Grizzlies Nets @ Grizzlies Grizzlies @ Pacers Cavaliers @ Grizzlies Grizzlies @ Supersonics Grizzlies @ Kings Grizzlies @ Mavericks Grizzlies @ Warriors Grizzlies @ Suns Raptors @ Grizzlies Warriors @ Grizzlies Grizzlies @ Clippers Suns @ Grizzlies Kings @ Grizzlies Bucks @ Grizzlies Grizzlies @ Trail Blazers Jazz @ Grizzlies Timberwolves @ Grizzlies Grizzlies @ Magic Bulls @ Grizzlies Grizzlies @ Mavericks Hornets @ Grizzlies Grizzlies @ Spurs Grizzlies @ Jazz Grizzlies @ Spurs Grizzlies @ Kings Grizzlies @ Pistons 76ers @ Grizzlies Lakers @ Grizzlies Supersonics @ Grizzlies Clippers @ Grizzlies Grizzlies @ Supersonics Grizzlies @ Jazz Grizzlies @ Nuggets Mavericks @ Grizzlies Celtics @ Grizzlies Grizzlies @ Nuggets Grizzlies @ Knicks Grizzlies @ Rockets Nuggets @ Grizzlies Spurs @ Grizzlies Suns @ Grizzlies Grizzlies @ Celtics Pistons @ Grizzlies Spurs @ Grizzlies Trail Blazers @ Grizzlies Trail Blazers @ Grizzlies Grizzlies @ Lakers Grizzlies @ Timberwolves Grizzlies @ Timberwolves Clippers @ Grizzlies Grizzlies @ Rockets Knicks @ Grizzlies Mavericks @ Grizzlies Timberwolves @ Grizzlies Grizzlies @ Nets Grizzlies @ Bulls Rockets @ Grizzlies Jazz @ Grizzlies Grizzlies @ Hawks Grizzlies @ 76ers Supersonics @ Grizzlies Kings @ Grizzlies Nuggets @ Grizzlies Grizzlies @ Lakers Grizzlies @ Bullets Pacers @ Grizzlies Warriors @ Grizzlies Bullets @ Grizzlies Grizzlies @ Clippers Grizzlies @ Suns Magic @ Grizzlies Grizzlies @ Cavaliers Rockets @ Grizzlies Grizzlies @ Heat Grizzlies @ Bucks Grizzlies @ Raptors Grizzlies @ Hornets Prediction: 29-53 Edited by MPH, Jun 15 2010, 11:14 AM.

Day 1 - Grizzlies @ Lakers First Qaurter The Grizzlies size was the equalizer in the first quarter as we were able to out rebound the Lakers 13 to 11. We're moving the ball around pretty good, although we've already had 3 turnovers to their one. Chris Gatling already has 7 points in 8 minutes of play, so thats promising. As for our big rookie? 0 for 4 shooting with 2 rebounds an 1 assist. He'll get going though. We really need him to step up on defense more than anything right now. Vlade is getting the ball fed to him, and he's 3 of 7 with with 6 points. Grizzlies 18, Lakers 17 Second Quarter I was afraid that our lead would last, and it didn't. The Lakers bench is a little deeper than ours, and it showed. I think the biggest shock of the first half has to be the play of our big rookie. Bryant is 0 for 6 in the game, his only point coming off the 1 free throw he managed to make. I know the big guy is a rookie, and he's got the pressure of a virgin franchise on his shoulders, but he's got to be more productive out there on the offensive side of the ball. Chris Gatling, on the other hand, is making me look good with 13 points and 2 rebounds off of a 6 for 9 shooting night so far. Greg Anthony has been doing a decent job distributing and scoring, with with 5 points and 4 assists. He's also got 4 rebounds, which is always nice. For the Lakers, Eddie Jones and Laettner are hurting us. Both have 10 points at the half, and their team is playing very unselfish. We need to cut down our turnovers (8) and start hitting our shots in the paint. Lakers 42, Grizzlies 39 Third Quarter Well, the good news is that we didn't turn the ball over as much. The bad news is that we are struggling with the free throws. We're 50% from the line so far, and being down by three, those points would be the difference. Reeves is continuing to struggle on offense, with only 2 points. He's got 6 rebounds and 4 assist though, so it's not like he's been completely useless. Gatling is huge for us right now. He's got 25 points in 28 minutes, and we are going to need more of the same down the stretch if we are going to try and win this game. No one else on the team is even in double figures at the moment. Doug Christie has disappeared from the game since the first quarter. He needs to find his way back, or we're toast. Lakers 65, Grizzlies 62 Fourth Quarter The Lakers ran away with it. The things that plagued us all game never righted themselves. Reeves never made a shot from the field, going 0 for 11 with only 2 points and 9 rebounds. I'll chalk it up to rookie jitters, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little concerned by the lack of performance. Chris Gatling ran out of gas in the fourth, and I can't really blame him. He's the only one that showed up today offensively, and we're gonna need more from certain people if we are going to win any games this year. six Lakers players were in double figures for the game, but Nick Van Exel was player of the game with 12 points, 3 rebounds, 7 assists, 2 steals and a block. The man was everywhere doing everything. Posted Image77 Posted Image88 Edited by MPH, Jun 15 2010, 12:04 PM.

I'd start Blue Edwards personally. You'd have 5 starters of B+ or better D and could at least hope to keep games low scoring enough to spring for an upset. Gatling and Cristie are two good pick-up's and hopefully Reeve's pans out better here than in reality. Keep up the good work! |

Day 2 - Grizzlies (0-1) @ Warriors (1-0) First Quarter The first quarter was a coming out party for Big Country. The big man struggled mightily all last game, not making a single shot from the field and only having 2 points for the game. In the first quarter tonight, he has 12 points and 7 rebounds. Add to that another promising performance from Gatling and Greg Anthony and we might just run away with this one. Grizzlies 31, Warriors 15 Second Quarter That big lead we had going into the second quarter all but disappeared under the pressure of Golden State's potent scorers. Rony Seikaly had 17 in the quarter . Reeves ran into foul trouble early after 2 minutes of play, which really helped their team get into us in the paint. Gatling has still been a factor with his game high 18. Grizzlies 51, Warriors 48 Third Quarter Well, on one hand we are really distributing the ball well, especially Greg Anthony. He's got 15 assists and really seems to be running the offense well. On the other hand, we have 17 turnovers. 17. Thats why we're tied going into the fourth. We're out shooting 50% to 42%, we're getting to the line more, and we are quite frankly playing better in every area. Except we keep giving away chances for them to hang around with us, and with the guys they have, that is a mistake. Grizzlies 70, Warriors 70 Fourth Quarter Well, we didn't turn the ball over, but we might as well have. Offensive rebounding became key in this quarter as suddenly our guy forgot they needed to prevent the other team from doing it. It was sickening to see us trading 5 defensive possessions for one offensive. I'll chalk it up to some inexperience inside, but we've got to better than that, especially when it counts. Still, it wasn't all bad. Big Country had 20 points and 16 rebounds which is a lot more promising than his first outing. Chris Gatling had a game high 37 points and 11 rebounds. None of those compares to the effort put in by Greg Anthony. 5 points, 3 rebounds, 18 assists and 4 steals in the loss. You hate to see a game like that be wasted, but if we keep getting play like that and things can keep improving, we are going to get where we want to go a lot faster than people expected. Day 4 - Grizzlies (0-2) @ Trailblazers (1-0) First Quarter The first half of the qurter we jumped out to a pretty big lead, mainly due to the cold shooting of Portland, but they were able to find their shots later on. Big Country continues to impress, scoring 11 points in 10 minutes of play and adding 3 rebounds, an assist and a steal. We need to pressure Cliff Robinson a little more because he's shooting the ball well early on, and often. Grizzlies 22, Trailblazers 17 Second Quarter It's amazing what this team can do when we aren't the ones turning the ball over all the time. We've forced 11 turnovers so far, and we're shooting 54%. Mix in a pretty even game on the boards, and what you get is us ahead at the half. Reeves is on his way to another great game. 15 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 4 steals.Chris has also found his touch, also putting in 15 through 2. Grizzlies 52, Trailblazers 38 Third Quarter Well, so much for ball control. We played a very sloppy game coming out after half time. We turned the ball over too many times, we missed easy shots, we allowed offensive rebounds by not boxing out, and we let them back in the game. Cliff Robinson is killing us with 21 and 11. We have got to get back to playing the way we were early in the game. Grizzlies 62, Trailblazers 55 Fourth Quarter This one hurt. We were really looking good in the first half, but in the second out shooting dropped from 54% to 40%. We couldn't buy a bucket. Add that to the fact that Portland blacked 11 or those shots, and we started turning the ball over (16 total) and we get our result. Of course, with all of the bad, we still had a chance down by 2 with the ball, but Reeves could only find Chris King for the shot, which was off. Big Country had another solid game with 20 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists and 5 steals. He's been a lot more active on the inside, and it shows. I feel like we are getting better with each game, so now we just need to put it all together and go get our first W. Posted Image 77 Posted Image 79 |

Day 5 - Heat (1-0) @ Grizzlies (0-3) First Quarter This could be a long game. They are just beating us, plain and simple. Alonzo Mourning is pounding away at us on the inside, and we just don't have anyone of his caliber to help. Their size on the inside is a problem as we just aren't a very good jump shooting team. We are just outmatched right now. It will be interesting to see how we respond. Heat 30, Grizzlies 22 Second Quarter Much better performance by our guys as they showed a lot of guts and a determination to not let this turn ugly. Turnovers are relatively low for us which is a plus, we're right with them on the rebounding front, and we are distributing the ball very well and playing unselfishly. 8 players have scored for us. Gatling has 13, and so does Ashraf Amaya. Big Country seems to be struggling to find his way against the defense of Zo and Shawn Bradley, but we need to find a way to get him going. Heat 55, Grizzlies 50 Third Quarter I'm not sure where to start. Chris Gatling scored 7 in the 3rd to help us, but he missed some key free throws, something this team is having a hard time with. Greg Anthony is having another great game at the point, with 8 points, 9 assists and 4 steals. But the big thing for us has been the play off the bench of Ashraf. He's got 19 points in 17 minutes and is really giving us a boost. Now we just need to keep it rolling and maybe walk away with win #1. Grizzlies 80, Heat 75 Fourth Quarter I'm really proud of my guys. Sure, I could be upset at another loss, but I saw a lot of good out there. At one point, with about 4 minutes left to play, after Alonzo Mourning led the Heat on a 20-8 run, we were down, and down a lot. Our guys kept fighting through shots that just wouldn't go down, and kept fighting for rebounds, and we were right there at the end. We were within one shot of tie-ing this game up and sending it to OT, or even winning, but we fell a little short. We ended with 5 guys in double figures, including Big Country. He found his game again in the fourth, but it was a little late. The Heat ended up with 7 guys in double figures, surely a testament to their depth. Posted Image 105 Posted Image 102 |

Day 6 - Hawks (2-1) @ Grizzlies (0-4) First Quarter We're shooting pretty poor as a team right now, but out size and rebounding has made up for it with the second chance points. We're also converting free throws, which has been a huge concern for me. Chris Gatling continues to lead the way on offense with 11 points in the first quarter. Grizzlies 24, Hawks 20 Second Quarter More of the same in the second as we continued to rely on second chance opportunities to get most of our points. Atlanta is out shooting us 51% to 41%, but we've forced a few more turnovers, and of our 23 rebounds, half of them are on the offensive side of the ball. The free throw shooting has continued to good as well. We need to keep this going in the next half, something we haven't been doing, if we are going to get the win. Grizzlies 44, Hawks 41 Third Quarter This might be the first time that we've come out at half time and played just as well as we did going in, if not better. We dominated the glass in the third, and we're now out rebounding the Hawks 42 to 29. Our initial shooting percentage is around 41%, but our defense has stepped up, and the Hawks are only shooting 42% now. Chris Gatling is on the verge of a double-double, and Bryant Reeves has taken advantage in the paint with 14 and 10. We just need to stay strong in the fourth for the first ever franchise victory. Grizzlies 61, Hawks 52 Fourth quarter Talk about a see-saw fourth. In the opening minutes, we jumped out to a 14 point lead, only to start playing sloppy and have the Hawks start hitting three's like nothing. Chris Gatling and Big Country stepped up in the closing two minutes to solidify our first ever win as a team. Rebounding was key, as we had 56 to their 39, and ended up shooting 44% from the field. Gatling finished with 30 points, 12 rebounds and 6 assists for us, and Reeves had 22 and 11. All in all a good game from us, and a blueprint for what we need to do in order to win. Day 7 - New Jersey Nets (2-4) @ Vancouver Grizzlies (1-4) First Quarter Seemed like a really close quarter on the score board, but we fell into some really bad habits again. We are turning the ball over on stupid plays, we aren't shooting very well, and Jayson Williams is having his way with us in the paint, which is something we shouldn't be allowing to happen. Nets 22, Grizzlies 18 Second Quarter I know it seems like I keep preaching the same thing over and over, but turnovers are killing us. We've turned it over 8 times so far, and every single one has led to points. The other thing that is killing us is fouls. We're getting a lot of whistles out there, and Chris Gatling has been the main focus. He's only played 8 minutes because of early foul trouble, and he has yet to score. We need to look into getting him more looks in the next half. Nets 41, Grizzlies 35 Third Quarter We are still getting the start in the foul department if you ask me, but we came out fighting in the third, and I can't ask for much more than that. Reeves and Montross have stepped up, Greg Anthony has taken the onus of scoring, and we've got some production from our bench. Now we just need an answer to Williams. Nets 64, Grizzlies 62 Fourth Quarter Nothing like taking it down to the wire. We fought hard for this game. We fought through whistles and stupidity, and Jayson Williams, and in the end, we came up with a 1 point last second win. Chris King got a beautiful pass from Greg Anthony with 4 seconds left and he put it in to send us ahead by 1. The Nets called a timeout and inbounded and Tony Massenburg came up short on his buzzer beater. There were a lot of heroes tonight. Reeves with 17 and 8. Greg Anthony with 15 and 9 dimes. Our new guy, Montross with 11 and 11. We pulled together and pulled our a win. First win streak in franchise history, eh? Posted Image 84 Posted Image 85 |

Days 8 to 20 - News Day 8 - Couple of roster notes on day 8. Grizzlies have moves Ashraf Amaya to starting SF after the slow start by Chris King. Ashraf is scoring 9.7 ppg in only 14 minutes, so hopefully this will provide a spark for the offense. King will move down the third on the depth chart behind Blue Edwards. Day 8 - We're changing the offensive focus. For the last 6 games, we've been focusing on getting the ball inside to our bigs, and while that has been decent, we haven't gotten a lot of results. Look for a more balanced attack to try and get Doug Christie a little more involved. Day 11 - Citing upper management pressure, Bryant Reeves should be getting more attention in the Grizzlies offense over SG Doug Christie. probably not a bad move considering in the lat 3 games, Christie has turned the ball over 20 times. Day 15 - Blue Edwards was injured during the game with the Raptors. He suffered a bruised cheek bone, but team doctors have rules him out for the next two games as a precaution. Days 8 to 20 - Results Day 8 - Grizzlies 99, Pacers 92 - First game for us with the new lineup and new offensive philosophy and what a game it was. Chris Gatling leads the way again with 24 and 13, Amaya nets 17 in his first game as a starter, and Doug Christie gets 15. Turnovers are still an issue though. Day 9 - Cavaliers 104, Grizzlies 81 - A slow start and too many turnovers doomed us tonight. Not a single bright spot to be found except maybe our free throw shooting. But when you lose by 23, who cares? Day 10 - Supersonics 121, Grizzlies 92 - This isn't really how I pictured responding to a blow out loss. I mean, seriously? They had seven players in double figures. Seven. Shawn Kemp had 33 of their 121. He was amazing. And you know who has all but disappeared since we switched offensive philosophies? Big Country. That isn't sitting well with management either. This was the first game of what is possibly going to be a very long road trip. Day 11 - Kings 91, Grizzlies 87 - It was a close one, but we still couldn't quite get it done in the fourth. We are still turning the ball over too much, and I am at a loss as to what I can do about it. Gatling played most of the game in foul trouble, but still managed 14 and 15. Reeves added 16 points, but was unable to produce much in the way of rebounding. We have 3 more on the road. Day 12 - Mavericks 89, Grizzlies 84 - Another tough one. There's not much more I can say. The same problems are causing us to lose these games. Greg Anthony has been getting good assists and making good passes, but he's also been pressing a little too much, and turning the ball over too much. Also, foul trouble is starting to rear it's ugly head again. Day 13 - Warriors 115, Grizzlies 108 - I felt like we played well enough to win this game. It sucks when you feel that way, but then at the end of the night, you still didn't do enough to garner a victory. Big Country really showed his stuff tonight too. Every minute he was on the floor, he dominated. 33 points, 14 rebounds; he was the man. Greg Anthony responded well to the criticism after the last game having 16 assists and only 1 turnover. It pains me to walk away with the L after such a strong performance, but thats the way it goes sometimes. Day 14 - Suns 104, Grizzlies 77 - Sheesh. First of all, I have nothing to say about the Suns other than Charles Barkley is an amazing ball player. 39 and 19. Now, has anyone seen Chris Gatling. The man has gone AWOL for us in the last handful of games, and we need to find him pronto. I realize that he's getting some pretty bad fouls called on him, and he's been in foul trouble the last 5 or 6 games, but the man still gets minutes, and he isn't doing what he usually does with them. 9 points in 31 minutes just doesn't cut it. Reeves has stepped up. And Greg Anthony continues to prove to me that when he wants to, he can be an extremely effective point guard. He had 13 assists and only 2 turnovers. And it's a good thing we are headed back home. That road stretch was brutal. Day 15 - Raptors 94, Grizzlies 85 - Ouch. after such a long road trip, I thought we'd be playing at top form at home, but I was wrong. We started out slow, shooting 30% in the first half, and then the refs pretty much took us out of it by ensuring that Gatling, who was actually having a decent game, wasn't on the floor most of the second half. We were able to keep it relatively close, but without our leading scorer and a lack of an outside game, the Raptors took game 1 of the expansions series. Day 16 - Warriors 96, Grizzlies 95 - Buzzer beaters hurt, but it should have never been that way. Instead of stepping up and playing better at home following that road trip, we have regressed back into turning the ball over too much, and missing free throws. There is no reason at all that we should be shooting 30% from the line. None. We outperformed them in every phase of the game, but lost because we couldn't buy a free throw. Day 17 - OFF Day 18 - Grizzlies 92, Clippers 88 - I'm gonna come out and say this right now. We should not have won this game. Period. We turned the ball over 20 times. If not for us out rebounding them by 15, and shooting 80% from beyond the arc, we would have been blown out. There is no way you can turn the ball over as much as we have and still win. This game was a fluke. Day 19 - OFF Day 20 - Suns 111, Grizzlies 92 - The Suns are just better than us. We hung with them for about 45 minutes before they just went on a tear to end the game. We played a little better, but I'm still thinking Chris Gatling is getting way too many calls against him. He's averaging in the last 10 games about 4.3 fouls per game. We have been working on his defense in practice, and I guess thats all we can do. The rest is up to the guys with the whistles. Posted Image 4-13 |
