1996 Season Preview Posted Image Strengths: We've got a young core of guys now at every position, and we've got some veterans to provide some leadership. Allen Iverson is a preseason favorite for Rookie of the Year. Our defense has improved, and our scoring should be better than last year. Weaknesses: We are young. Very young. Two rookies starting, and two young guys coming off the bench. We are thin at a couple of positions, and too deep at others. We don't have any picks this offseason, so if we suck, we don't get anything for it. I think we are going to be vastly improved this season. I won't say that we'll double our win total, but I think we can fight for a low playoff seed, and maybe even shock a few people. Thats the wonderful thing about having a young team. No one really knows what to expect, so there's no pressure on us. We are going to turn some heads this year, I can feel it. My prediction: 45-37 |

No shit. AI & Walker already look like they could be your two best players and you kept the key core of Anthony, Gatling & Reeves. Benjamin is a nice touch and Nash is a local boy who could develop into something nice. Obviously this looks like a great draft on paper and if you can find a good SF/SG off the bench you could be a real headache for opponents in the near future. |

I'm borrowing slightly from my contemporaries as far as updates, so if things look familiar, thats why 1996 NBA Regular Season | Days 1-20 Day 1 - GRIZZLIES 108, Clippers 86 (C. Gatling - 29 pts, 17 reb) Day 3 - Grizzlies 80, TRAILBLAZERS 75 (C. Gatling - 21 pts, 12 reb) Day 5 - GRIZZLIES 113, Celtics 97 (C. Gatling - 40 pts) Day 6 - GRIZZLIES 106, Timberwolves 73 (A. Iverson - 25 pts, 4 stls) Day 8 - Trailblazers 86, GRIZZLIES 80 (C. Gatling - 22 pts, 16 reb) Day 10 - GRIZZLIES 105, Hornets 82 (B. Benjamin - 11 pts, 8 reb, 4 stls, 5 blks) Day 11 - GRIZZLIES 110, Warriors 98 (A. Iverson - 22 pts, 6 ast) Day 12 - Grizzlies 97, HORNETS 94 (G. Anthony - 10 pts, 10 ast) Day 13 - Heat 99, GRIZZLIES 82 (B. Reeves - 15 pts, 13 reb) Day 14 - Kings 111, GRIZZLIES 109 (C. Gatling - 36 pts, 12 reb) Day 15 - BUCKS 100, Grizzlies 86 (B. Benjamin - 10 pts, 12 reb, 4 blks) Day 16 - ROCKETS 99, Grizzlies 94 (B. Reeves - 24 pts, 12 reb) Day 17 - SUPERSONICS 115, Grizzlies 89 (C. Gatling - 32 pts, 12 reb) Day 18 - GRIZZLIES 98, Pistons 85 (C. Gatling - 34 pts, 15 reb) Day 19 - Grizzlies 106, NUGGETS 87 (A. Walker - 21 pts, 6 reb, 5 ast) Record: 9-6 (9-6) Coaches Thoughts We had a nice start, started to show our inexperience, and then started to come together again. Chris Gatling is without a doubt the biggest part of our team success. Our two starting rooks are having a decent start to their careers. Iverson is averaging a shade under 17 a game and Walker is getting around 13. All i all a great improvement over last years start. If we keep this up, I see big things happening this year. |

1996 NBA Regular Season | Days 21 - 40 Day 21 - Knicks 86, GRIZZLIES 75 (A. Walker - 21 pts) Day 24 - JAZZ 107, Grizzlies 83 (A. Iverson - 16 pts, 5 asts, 5 stls) Day 27 - Grizzlies 111, SUNS 103 (A. Iverson - 32 pts, 9 asts) Day 28 - JAZZ 91, Grizzlies 87 (C Gatling - 23 pts, 11 reb) Day 33 - Grizzlies 98, LAKERS 88 (G. Anthony - 15 pts, 12 ast) Day 34 - WARRIORS 108, Grizzlies 93 (A. Iverson - 25 pts, 6 ast) Day 35 - MAVERICKS 114, Grizzlies 97 (C. Gatling - 19 pts 10 reb) Day 36 - GRIZZLIES 95, Cavaliers 86 (C. Gatling - 19 pts, 13 reb) NEWS----> Center Benoit Benjamin is out 37 days due to a fractured arm. Day 39 - GRIZZLIES 111, Spurs 99 (C. Gatling - 30 pts, 12 reb) Day 40 - SPURS 100, Grizzlies 84 (C. Gatling - 19 pts, 14 reb) NEWS----> Center Bryant Reeves is out 8 days with a bruised hip. Record: 13-12 (4-6) Coaches Thoughts Well, i wish I could blame the bad month on the injuries that decimated out center position, but we were struggling before that. I think if anything it shows how young we are. We started out all fired up, thinking we could take on the world, and we're just now starting to remember who we are. Allen Iverson is really starting to show us why we drafted him when we did, and over all I have to say I'm still pleased with how the team is doing. We've got a couple of spots to fill now with the injuries to Big Country and Benoit Benjamin. We don't really have a center, and I don't know if there's a lot of options out there for us to look in to. We'll more than likely just try and ride out the next week or so until Reeves comes back, and then go from there as far as replacing Benjamin. |

Anthony - 22 pts, 12 asts) Day 56 - KINGS 135, Grizzlies 105 (A. Iverson - 35 pts) Day 57 - Grizzlies 109, CELTICS 102 (C. Gatling - 29 pts, 14 rebs) Day 58 - Timberwolves 93, GRIZZLIES 90 (B. Reeves - 19 pts, 7 rebs) Day 59 - Grizzlies 116, SUNS 96 (G. Anthony - 18 pts, 15 asts) Day 60 - All Star Weekend Record: 19-19 (6-7) Rookies vs. Sophomores - Rookies 101, Sophomores 93 (A. Iverson - 24 pts, 3 stls) 3-Point Shootout - Mitch Richmond def. Ray Allen 19-18 Slam Dunk Contest - Todd Day def. Jerry Stackhouse & Lloyd Feick All Star Game - West 104, East 98 (A. Iverson - 6 pts, 2 asts, 3 rebs, 1 stl, 2 blks) Coaches Thoughts First of all, congratulations to Allen Iverson for his all star weekend performance. It started off with him leading the Rookie team to a win over the Sophs and being named player of the game. He was also the first Grizzly in franchise history to be named to the All-Star team. He didn't play a lot as the backup shooting guard, but he played well when he was in there. Now, onto more pressing matters. We went 6-7, not that great. We are really missing the inside depth we enjoyed with Benoit Benjamin in our lineup, and we were hurting without him. We also didn't have Big Country for a while, and we had to make due with a tough road schedule. Once we got him back, we changed up the offensive tempo, and that seemed to help. Still not sure if we are going to make a deal or not in regards to our center position, but we need to figure it out. We don't have any picks this year, so it's in our best interest to make sure we are the best we can possibly be.

Iverson - 28 pts) NEWS----> F Blue Edwards is out 7 days due to a broken finger. Record: 27-27 (8-8) Coaches Thoughts If only we could stay healthy. It seems like our biggest opponent this season has been injuries. And we just lost probably the key to our entire team over the last week and a half. Greg Anthony is by far the MVP for this team. He makes so many things happen. Rookie guard Steve Nash did an admirable job coming in as a replacement, but it just wasn't the same team. We finally got Benjamin back, so that should help things on the inside. We're still considering making some type of move before the looking trade deadline, but we're just not sure yet. Iverson and Gatling continue to impress and Antoine Walker is starting to find his niche as well. And don't look now kids, but we're half a game out of the playoffs.

1996 Regular Season | Day 81 - 100 (Trade Deadline) News----> The Grizzlies have traded Cuonzo Martin, SG to the Bulls for F Dennis Rodman Day 81 - Grizzlies 106, HAWKS 91 (A. Iverson - 21 pts, 7 rebs, 5 asts, 4 stls) Day 82 - Grizzlies 91, TIMBERWOLVES 74 (A. Iverson - 25 pts, 7 stls) Day 84 - GRIZZLIES 99, Nuggets 96 (A. Anthony - 10 pts, 11 asts) Day 96 - Bucks 94, GRIZZLIES 88 (A. Iverson - 31 pts, 9 rebs) Day 97 - Jazz 93, GRIZZLIES 90 (A. Iverson - 26 pts) Day 98 - GRIZZLIES 108, Trailblazers 92 (A. Iverson - 28 pts) Day 99 - Grizzlies 93, HEAT 82 (C. Gatling - 13 pts, 11 rebs, 4 stls) Record: 39-30 (12-3) Coaches Thoughts When we were contacted by the Bulls to see if we were interested in Dennis Rodman, I thought it was a practical joke. But Rodman had worn out his welcome in Chicago, and the 35 year old wanted somewhere to finish out his career. I talked to him, we agreed that this was a nice quiet place away from all of the distractions that hounded him the last few years, and we pulled the trigger on a deal. He hasn't played a lot, but his experience with the young guys has payed off. We made a very strong playoff push, beating some very good teams. We're now sitting at the #5 seed in the West, and only 2.5 away from Utah for the lead in the conference. The playoffs aren't guaranteed yet, but we are going to try our best to give Canada something to cheer about.
