Coaches Thoughts I know it's hard to complain when you take a second year franchise to the playoffs for the first time, but we blew a golden opportunity. All we had to do was win the last two games we had, and we would have been the Midwest Conference champs and had the #2 seed in the playoffs. Now we sit at the #6 seed. But we'll talk more about the playoffs in a bit. I want to congratulate our team on accomplishing something great this year. We battled some adversity, we struggled at times, but in the end, we made it to the post season. Allen Iverson was recognized as one of the top rookies of this season, and many thought he was robbed of the Rookie of the Year award. It's all water under the bridge, because in a few short years, there will be no counting the amount of hardware he'll have. Now as we move on to the playoffs, we're in a great position. We're healthy, we're playing pretty good, and we have nothing to lose.

Coaches Thoughts - Postseason Well, another season is done. I knew going in the playoffs that Seattle was a tough draw for us. They've had our number all season, and they showed it. The clinching game was a heart breaker for us, as we fought hard all game, taking a 15 point lead into the fourth quarter. I chalk it up to out inexperience that we let that kind of a lead slip through our fingers. Next year we'll have this experience to draw from, and I think things can go even further with this great group we have.
My only other thoughts are that we witnessed a very anti-climatic finals this year. Other than the matchup between David Robinson and Patrick Ewing, the finals were no contest. The Spurs were a great team hampered by injured early in the season, and they showed that seeding means nothing when it comes time to playing in the post season.

1997 Post Season - Byron Scott has retired from the Grizzlies. We wish Byron the best and thank him for his two seasons of service to the team. His leadership will be missed.
- Dennis Rodman has retired from the Grizzlies. We wish him the best in his future endeavors.
- Doug Edwards of the Grizzlies has decided to test free agency and will not be re-signing with the team.

I can't believe we got KJ. We made a tough move when we shipped of Greg. He's been there for us the last two seasons and been a cornerstone, but the GM and I had a discussion, and we wanted to make a move and get into this years draft. Unfortunately for us, the guy we were targeting was drafted a couple picks before us so we had to trade out. So now where do we stand. 3 1sts next year, a better PG, and a backup to boot. I'd say we made some very savvy moves this offseason. More on that later.

1997-1998 Season Preview Posted Image
Strenghths: We are going to be a top scoring team, no doubt. Every single starter on this team can put up some big numbers. Our guard position is phenomenal. Size on the inside.
Weaknesses: With all of these scorers, it might be hard to find enough shots to go around. Defense might be a bit of an issue. Rebounding might not be as strong as years past. New guy running the offense, how will the team react?
I think this year has a chance to be special. When we dealt Greg Anthony earlier in the offseason, I saw it as a move to set us up for a couple years down the line. A very forward thinking move, if you will. When our plans to try and get Chauncey Billups in the draft fell through, we had to make a quick decision. I think that paid off because now we have three draft picks this coming offseason. We originally felt that if it came down to it, Allen Iverson could make the move to point, and we would just try and find a body to put at the two guard. Imagine our surprise when recent free agent Kevin Johnson, formerly of the Phoenix Suns, accepted out MLE bid over a 4 year 65 million dollar contract. I feel with the team that we've gotten together, we have the talent to make it very deep in the payoffs.
Prediction: 50-32

Coaches Thoughts Well, to say I'm disappointed is an understatement, but we've got a pretty big weakness that a lot of teams in the league are able to exploit. Our defense inside is lacking. Most notably at the power forward position. Chris Gatling is amazing on offense, and that is great, but if we want that offensive output, we have to deal with his defensive shortcomings. We're trying to focus more on slowing the offense down instead of running up and down to court so much. In addition, we've gone to a press attack type of defense. This should put more pressure on the other team and hopefully cover some of our deficiencies.

Coaches Thoughts Things were going all right until Kevin Johnson went down with a minor injury. We have some depth at the position, sure, but he's a key player, and without him we struggled. We're coming up on the all star break, ans so far I feel like we are under performing. There has been a lot of rumours circulating about the future of Bryant Reeves. He's in his third year, and we just haven't seen the kind of development we were hoping for. Now we know that he's been moved to the bench in more of a backup role, but the production has been on a steady decline. The feeling is that it might be best to sell on him now while his price is still high, not to mention the fact that he could turn it around elsewhere.

Coaches Thoughts Well, with Kevin back, you can see we are a different team. We are riding a slight winning streak going into the break, and we're also pushing the Spurs for the division lead. Bryant is starting to step up a little more, which is great for us. A few short seasons ago, he was our franchise. Sad that the way things are these days, it could turn from franchise player to heading out of town without any notice. I am glad he's staying though. AI and Antoine Walker continue to impress in just their second year. Iverson is averaging 22 a game, and Walker is is getting almost 14 and 7. Not bad. Looking forward to the second half of the season, don't be shocked if we make a major move. We've got a couple of players that look expendable, and if we can use them to solidify our playoff run, we will make it happen.

Coaches Thoughts Wow, we stunk up the joint after the break. The word is out on the street about our defensive liabilities, and teams are exploiting them like crazy. There's not really a whole lot to say other than we are 90% sure that a deal is going to happen within the next month to ship off Chris Gatling. It's not that he's not great for us, or that we don't appreciate what he's provided the last two seasons, but this team is moving in a different direction, and he's been lost in the shuffle. Dealing him might be whats best not just for us, but for him.

Coaches Thoughts Well, Chris Gatling is gone. We traded him at the beginning of the month to the Nets for Jayson Williams. We gave up a little offense and gained some defense. Thats what we needed, but it still feels kind of funny. We tried making some other moves before the deadline, but nothing seemed to pan out. Benoit Benjamin, Bryant Reeves, Blue Edwards; all were shopped, but we just couldn't make anything happen. With the number of draft picks we have, we'll probably look to package some together to move up in the draft, but thats a little while down the road. We're still hanging in the playoff race. 7 behind Utah in the division, and 5th in the conference. Right now we are looking at a matchup with Minnesota, and that is scary. They have gotten really good with their young core, and they could make some noise. AI continues to be a force for us. He's a future MVP in this league, no doubt.

Coaches Thoughts Well, we made a run to end the season, with the exception of the last week. We made a push and made the 4 seed in the playoffs. That means we get away from Minnesota. Good news is now we play the Kings. We went 4-0 against them in the regular season, so hopefully that bodes well for us. Allen Iverson is by far the MVP of the team this year. 22 ppg and a whole slew of other numbers. That netted him second team all league honors this year. As we head into the playoffs, i think we've got a great shot at making a good run. The regular season was a little disappointing, but I admit I set the bar high on a team that was full of potential, but also changing it's culture.
