1998-1999 Offseason Resigning Period Jayson Williams, Nick Van Exel and Kevin Johnson all decided to test the waters of the ocean known as Free Agency. Chris Dudley was willing to resign, but we weren't willing to pay him the 6 million for 1 year that he was asking for. Draft Lottery 1. Mavericks (Pacers) 2. Nets (---) 3. 76ers (Clippers) 4. Pacers (Nuggets) 5. Clippers (76ers) 6. Nuggets (Mavericks) 7. Raptors (---) 8. Bucks (---) 9. Hawks (---) 10. Knicks (---) 11. Lakers (---) 12. Rockets (---) 13. Timberwolves (---) The Mavs moved up from #6 to get the #1 pick. Theres a lot of talent in this draft, and we've got three picks, albeit late one. We might try and move up and get us a star, or we might just sit back and see where things go. 1998 NBA Draft 1. The Mavericks select PF Raef LaFrenz 2. The Nets select Michael Olowokandi 3. The 76ers take Mike Bibby 4. The Pacers select Paul Pierce 5. The Clippers select Mathew Blood 6. The Nuggets select Vince Carter (They have T-Mac already, the lucky bastards) 7. The Raptors select Brad Miller 8. The Grizzlies* select Dirk Nowitzki 9. The Hawks select Robert Traylor 10. The Knicks take Jason Williams 11. The Lakers select Bonzi Wells 12. The Rockets take Michael Doleac 13. The Timberwolves select Jelani McCoy 14. The Hornets select Tyrone Nesby 15. The Celtics take Damon Jones 16. The Magic** select Jesus Hardaway 17. The Suns select Ruben Stepania 18. Warriors take Trevor Kieta 19. Kings select Keon Clark 20. Bucks select Kristopher Bullard 21. Bullets select Jahidi White 22. Busk select Antawn Jamison 23. Pistons select Cuttino Mobley 24. Grizzlies select Dan Aridge 25. Sonics select Mason Heinsohn 26. Heat select Alfonso Reeves 27. Jazz take Michael Dickerson 28. Bulls select Matt Harping 29. Cavs select Randell Jackson ---- 30. Pacers select Larry Hughes 42. Lakers select Tyronn Lue 43. Timberwolves select Al Harrington 53. Spurs select Nazr Mohammed 54. Heat select brian Skinner *We traded the Bucks our 1998 and 200 1sts and the Spurs 1998 1st for their pick here and a 1st in 1999 ** We traded this pick to the Magic in exchange for their first later this year and their 1999 1st. Free Agency Day 1 Grizzlies sign Grant Hill to a 6 year deal. Day 2 Nothing Day 3 Grizzlies sign Robert Pack with the MLE Day 4 Grizzlies sign Ben Wallace with LLE Day 5 Nothing - We made a splash in free agency. Shortly after getting out target in the NBA draft, we landed one of the premiere players in free agency, Grant Hill. We also shored up the point position by getting Robert Pack. We're counting on some good things this year from Steve Nash. He's had 2 seasons to develop under two very good point guards, so we think he's more than capable. Lastly, we were able to grab one of the best defenders in free agency in Ben Wallace. Wallace will be great off the bench later in games, and is also a nice player to have if any of our bigs get into foul trouble. |

1998-1999 Season Preview
Strengths: Scoring, Guard abilities, youth, defense, hungry. Weaknesses: Rebounding, youth, too many mouths to feed. We look stacked on paper, and I find it hard to picture a season that doesn't end with a ceremony. Yeah, we're young. We don't have a starter over 26. We've got little experience in the playoffs. We made it the last two years, for a total of 3 wins. We're unproven at point guard with Steve Nash, but I think after seeing him in training camp, it's time for this young man to guide a team from his country to places beyond our expectations. I think our biggest obstacle will be managing to keep all the amazing talent we have happy in the system. I have to get these guys to buy into playing some ball with one goal in mind. Prediction: 55-27 |

1998-1999 Regular Season | Days 1 - 20
Record: 5-8 (5-8) | 5th Place, Midwestern Conference (5.5 GB) Coaches Thoughts Well, the first part of our season is done. It was bad enough that in the first game of the season Grant Hill went down with a minor injury that kept him out for a couple weeks, but losing Allen Iverson for a little over a month could be devastating. I just don't have anything more to say.

1998-1999 Regular Season | Days 21-40
Record: 11-13 (6-5) | 3rd Place Midwestern Conference (5.5 GB) Coaches Thoughts Well, we got AI back, but not before we lost Antoine Walker with an injury. We can't seem to catch a break here. The only positive thing to note is that when we finally got out whole squad back together. Hill and Iverson are one hell of a combination when they are healthy though. And Dirk and Nash have stepped up in their areas. If we can just stay healthy, we are going to be one dangerous team.

1998-1999 Regular Season | Days 41-60 (All-Star Break)
Record: 21-16 (10-3) | 3rd Place Midwestern Division (3.0 GB) Coaches Thoughts This is the team I was looking for. This is the team that could get to the finals. We absolutely dominated out there. We've got six players averaging double figures, lead the league in FG percentage, and Dirk is one of the leading candidates for Rookie of the Year. As we head in to the all star break, I just want to focus on getting and staying healthy. We lost Steve Nash a few games before the break to a finger injury, and he might miss a game or two.

1998-1999 Regular Season | Days 61-80
Record: 29-24 (8-8) | 3rd in Midwestern Division (5.0 GB) Coaches Thoughts We can't seem to catch a break. Things were sailing along smoothly, and then Grant Hill went down with a broken jaw. We pretty much have to make a playoff push without him. It's going to be hard, but I think we'll manage. We can't survive too many more injuries though.

1998-1999 Regular Season | Days 81-100 (Trade Deadline)
Record: 40-27 (11-3) | 2nd Place, Midwest Division (2.0 GB) Coaches Thoughts Well, we had to make an adjustment early on for Grant Hill being hurt, and Antoine Walker stepped up big time. Once Hill got back, we moved him back into the starting SF slot, but really watched his minutes. We're now two games away from Utah for the division title, and a top seed in the playoffs. They key now is to win without hurting ourselves. The way this team plays when we're healthy is amazing, and I doubt anyone in the league can handle us on our best day.

1998-1999 Regular Season | Days 101-120 (End of Regular Season)
Record: 46-36 (6-6) | 2nd Place Midwest Division (4.0 GB) Coaches Thoughts Well, we screwed the pooch on that one. Honestly, we just dropped the ball. I actually blame myself for screwing with the chemistry that was working. Now I have a choice to make going in to the playoffs. Start Grant Hill or Antoine Walker. Hill is the more talented, and has more experience, but Walker was in when we were winning. A tough choice to be sure, and against a Jazz team with vets on their side, it's going to make it that much harder. On a lighter note, I'd like to recognize Drk Nowitzki as our player of the year. As a rookie, he started all 82 games for us and averaged 15.4 points a game. Dirk barely missed out on rookie of the year honors. Those went to Paul Pierce of the Indiana Pacers instead. Also, Allen Iverson, despite only playing in 65 games, was named second team All-NBA. See you all in the playoffs.

MVP: B.J. Armstrong, PG Coaches Thoughts What a season. There were some ups and downs, and we made a great playoff run, but in the end we were sent home by the eventual NBA champs. I'll always wonder if I made the right choice in sticking with Grant Hill over Antoine Walker, even though the team seemed to respond better with Walker in. We have a busy offseason in front of us. Three draft picks in a draft stacked with talent. A little cap room. And some decisions to make about some key players either re-signing with us or moving on, as well as trades to consider. We did good this year, and we have reason to look forward to next season. We've improved every year, and we are inching closer and closer to that NBA title. I have a feeling next year could be the year. |

1999-2000 Offseason Resign Period - Anthony Johnson has decided to test free agency. - Ben Wallace has decided to test free agency. - The Grizzlies have declined their option on Bryant "Big Country" Reeves, making him a free agent. We felt that while Braynt had been a stalwart for us in the past, he wasn't improving enough or performing enough to warrant a 6 year 74 million dollar contract. We have other cheaper options available to us that we feel wouldn't handicap our team like allocating that much money to a player that isn't key to the success would. - Robert Pack has decided to test free agency. - The Grizzlies have declined an option on Chris Manning, making him a free agent. - The Grizzlies have declined to resign 35 year old Kenny Gattison. - The Grizzlies have released SG Blue Edwards. Edwards was asking for 1 million for 1 year. - The Grizzlies have relesed veteran forward Ashraf Amaya. He played 1 game in the last three seasons. Draft Lottery 1. Rockets (Knicks) 2. Knicks (Clippers) 3. Hawks (Rockets) 4. Clippers (Hawks) 5. Nets (--) 6. Mavericks (--) 7. Nuggets (--) 8. Pacers (--) 9. Supersonics (--) 10. Lakers (--) 11. Hornets (--) 12. Bullets (--) 13. Heat (--) NBA Draft 1. Houston select Elton Brand, PF 2. New York selects Lamar Odom, PF 3. Atlanta selects Manu Ginobili, SG 4. LA Clippers select Shawn Marion, SF 5. New Jersey selects Andre Miller, PG 6. Dallas selects Ron Artest, SF 7. Denver selects Andrei Kirilenko, SF 8. Indiana select Wally Szczerbiak, SF 9. Seattle selects Steve Francis, PG 10. LA Lakers select Richard Hamilton, SG 11. Charlotte selects Venson Hamilton, PF 12. Washington selects Corey Maggette, SF 13. Miami selects Henric Rodl, SF 14. Portland selects James Posey, SF 15. Minnesota selects Todd MacCulloch 16. Philadelphia selects Wang Zhizhi, C 17. Phoenix selects Baron Davis, PG 18. Vancouver selects Frederic Weis, C 19. Detroit selects Jeff Foster, PF 20. Chicago selects Mike James, PG 21. Utah selects Jason Terry, PG 22. Boston selects Gianluca Basile, PG 23. Vancouver selects Evan Eschmeyer, C 24. Toronto selects Trajan Langdon, PG 25. Sacramento selects Francisco Elson, C 26. San Antonio selects Jumaine Jones, SF 27. New York selects Vonteego Cummings, SG We traded out of this spot due to the fact that no one we even remotely wanted was available. The Knicks were more than willing to take out 1st here and the Spurs 2nd we had for their 1st in the 2001 draft. 28. Cleveland selects Gordan Giricek, SF 29. Golden State selects Kenny Thomas, PF Free Agency -Day 1- We sent some offers out on Arvydas Sabonis, Bryant Reeves and Kevin Garnett. Sabonis has already gotten a larger offer from Portland, we're leading on Reeves, and Garnett is considering offers from the Nets and Pistons. After we figure out the center issue we'll start building our bench. -Day 2- Sabonis decided to stick with the Trailblazers and Bryant Reeves decided to come back home. We got him for about 20 million less than he originally wanted, and it's good to have him back. The Nets upped their offer on Garnett and I would be shocked if he didn't go there. with Big Country back in the fold, it's time we started focusing on the bench. We're just looking for some solid defenders. -Day 3- Garnett signed with the Nets. Like I said, not shocked. -Day 4- We picked up Larry Johnson for the MLE. At the age of 30, he's still a great inside scorer with decent defense off the bench. some people are actually projecting him to start over Dirk. I don't think so. -Day 5- Of all the targets we shot for on the last day of free agency, the only one we landed was 34 year old center Rony Seikaly. Luckily for us, there's still a lot of unsigned talent we'll be able to scoop up on the cheap. Season Preview
We're not as deep as we were last year in my opinion, but we are sure as hell tougher. The general thought process going into the offseason was to focus on defense. We preached defense every single minute of every offseason drill, camp, and meeting. I want us to be in the top 5 defensively this year. The points can handle themselves. I want to see us put it to the other team so hard that they walk away knowing they were in a fight. I think this team is ready to take on all comers in the West and try to make amends for the loss we had in the Western Conference Finals last season. Prediction: 53-29 |

1999-2000 Regular Season | Days 1-20
Record: 12-3 (12-3) | 1st place, Midwest Division (--) Coaches Thoughts Despite losing Benoit Benjamin, Rony Seikaly, Dirk Nowitzki and Bryant Reeves at different points, we still managed to start the season really well. I'm a little wary of so many injuries this early, but none of them were serious, and it may have just been a fluke. AI, Steve Nash and Antoine Walker carried us through those injuries. Hopefully they won't have to do so again.
