2000-2001 Regular Season | Days 61-80
Record: 43-10 (13-1) | 1st place, Midwest Division (13.5 up) Coaches Thoughts We are plugging along and playing some great basketball. It would be awesome to win 70 games this season, but I'm not sure we can keep up the level of play. Still, we're already a lock for the playoffs, not withstanding a catastrophic breakdown. Iverson continues to be right up there with the leaders in PPG. He's turned into one of the most dynamic scorers in the league. And of course, one of the huge keys for us has been the play of Scottie Pippen. Grant Hill did an admirable thing, moving to the 6th man position for Scottie. That gave us one of the better benches in the league, and a really good chance of repeating as champs.

2000-2001 Regular Season | Days 81-100 (Trade Deadline)
Record: 54-12 (11-2) | 1st place, Midwest Division (18.0 up) Coaches Thoughts Well, our chase for history just got a little tighter. If we win 15 more games we tie the 1971-1972 Los Angeles Lakers for best regular season record ever. That means we can only lose one more. I've talked to the team, and we know we're in the playoffs, but they want to go for this record. We know what an injury could mean for our title hopes, but the guys are confident, and they want that record. So I'm going to let them play for it.

2000-2001 Regular Season | Days 101-120
Record: 67-15 (13-3) | 1st place, Midwest Division (21 up) Coaches Thoughts So close, but the one thing I was worried would happen actually happened. Grant Hill went down with a minor injury. Nothing serious, but it cost us a couple games, and there's a chance he will miss the first game of our opening series against a dangerous Spurs team. We're going in to the playoffs feeling pretty confident regardless of the slight hiccup to end the season. Dirk, AI and Nash are all playing lights out. Pippen and Camby are contributing. We spent the whole season trying to earn a shot at defending our title, and now we have it.

MVP: Allen Iverson (25.6 ppg, 5.4 apg, 4.2 rpg, 3.5 spg) Coaches Thoughts Back to Back sounds nice. To be honest, i thought the road would be a bit tougher. We faltered a little to start the playoffs, dropping a couple of games to the Spurs, including the opener when we were without Grant Hill.In the second round we cruised, easily beating an outmatched Dallas team. In the WCF we played the second best team in the West, and I thought it would be a close series. Instead we proved our dominance and swept them. such a great feeling. In the finals we jumped out to a 2-0 lead after great performances at home, but the first two games in Miami our offense couldn't seem to find anything. I attribute most of that to the stellar play of Alonzo Mourning. He's probably one of if not the most dominant inside guy in the East. We were able to get things going in game 5, and in game six, I told our guys to not mess around and just put Miami away. Alonzo had 41 that game, but we shut down everyone else, and got scoring from all our guys, including 19 for Grant off the bench. Not really sure where to go from here. We've got a great core coming back for next year, but we do need to try and get a more permanent solution to play inside for us. There's a couple of guys in the draft, and we have some picks. Maybe next year, we can do the unthinkable. |

Just a quick note. For those that have been reading, I will be doing one more season, after which I will be going on hiatus to focus on my WCMTJ basketball compo and my World Cup one. After the World Cup compo is finished, I'll return to this. Now let's go three-peat. |

2001-2002 Offseason - Olden Polynice of the Grizzlies has retired - Will Perdue of the Grizzlies has retired - Avery Johnson of the Grizzlies has retired - Marcus Camby of the Grizzlies has entered free agency - Jaime Feick of the Grizzlies has entered free agency - Terry Dehere of the Grizzlies has entered free agency - Devin Thurmond of the Grizzlies has entered free agency Resigning News We decided not to resign Benoit Benjamin. He was asking for 6.4 million for one season, and we just couldn't see doing that. Given his age, we might be able to grab him for the minimum after he sits around in free agency for a bit. Draft Lottery 1. Supersonics (Grizzlies) 2. Suns (Lakers) 3. Lakers (Warriors) 4. Grizzlies (Timberwolves) 5. Warriors (Suns) 6. Timberwolves (Magic) 7. Magic (Kings) 8. Kings (Nets) 9. Nets (Supersonics) 10. Bucks 11. Bulls 12. Hornets 13. Hawks NBA Draft 1. Seattle selects Richard Jefferson, SF 2. Phoenix selects Pau Gasol, PF 3. Los Angeles L. select Shane Battier, SF 4. San Antonio* selects Jason Richardson, SG 5. Golden State selects Joe Johnson, SG 6. Minnesota selects Samuel Dalembert, C 7. Orlando selects Tony Parker, PG 8. Sacramento selects Zach Randolph, PF 9. New Jersey selects Gerald Wallace, SF 10. Milwaukee selects Jamaal Tinsley, PG 11. Chicago selects Gilbert Arenas, PG 12. Charlotte selects Brendan Heywood, C 13. Atlanta selects Kwame Brown, PF 14. Utah selects Bobby Simmons, SF 15. Vancouver selects Tyson Chandler, C 16. Portland selects Mehmet Okur, PF 17. Dallas selects Raul Lopez, PG 18. Detroit selects Vladmir Radmanovic, PF 19. Washington selects Trenton Hassell, SG 20. Philadelphia selects Jason Collins, C 21. Houston selects Kedrick Brown, SG 22. Boston selects Eddie Griffin, PF 23. Miami selects DeSagana Diop, C 24. Denver selects Kenny Satterfield, PG 25. Indiana selects Ousmane Cisse, PF 26. Cleveland selects Troy Murphy, PF 27. Toronto selects Earl Watson, PG 28. Los Angeles C. selects Alton Ford, PF 29. Vancouver selects Eddy Curry, C * - we traded out here due to Gasol being off the board. We got the Spurs 01, 02 and 03 1sts and 01 and 02 2nds in exchange for the Knicks 01 1st and our 02 1st. Free Agency -Day 1- We were able to land Ben Wallace for the MLE. That helps a lot, because even though he's on the short side, he's got reach, and he can play center. We've still got offer out on a handful of other players, hoping they will take less in order to play for a two time defending champion. -Day 2- Nothing of interest. Guys are still sitting on their offers and waiting to see what else might come along. Shawn Bradley signed a 7 year 107 million dollar deal with the Heat. Interesting, no? -Day 3- Nothing again. I'm actually starting to get nervous. Our bench isn't going to be as dynamic as it was last year, and that has me worried. -Day 4- Well, most of our min. offers went elsewhere, but I'd like to officially announce that we are welcoming home a former player to the team. Chris Gatling, at the age of 35, has signed a 1 year deal with us. -Day 5- Last day of FA, all we got was a backup PG. Not that we need one, but you never know. Cory Alexander. Good defensive player, decent handling. Season Preview Lineup Ben Wallace, Center Dirk Nowitzki, Power Forward Scottie Pippen, Small Forward Allen Iverson, Shooting Guard Steve Nash, Point Guard Grant Hill Antoine Walker Cory Alexander Chris Gatling
Prediction: 50-32 We aren't nearly as deep this year as we were last year. I don't see us dominating as much, but I think we're still the team to beat in the West. Time will tell. Edited by MPH, Jun 26 2010, 03:49 AM.

2001-2002 Season Review
Well, there's the season in a nutshell. Two major things happened this season. The first thing is we won 20 games in a row. That's tied for #2 all-time in NBA history. Not a small feat. The second thing that happened was much more devastating. Steve Nash broke his leg towards the end of the season on a fluke play. Steve is going to make a full recovery, but obviously we are going to be without him for the playoffs. That means we need a lot of guys to step up. We tried some things during the last couple of weeks of the season, including playing Grant Hill at point guard to mixed results. In the end it was decided that Allen Iverson would be playing the position, with Grant moving from the bench to starting SG. That's going to leave us a little thin depth wise, but I told the guys, we have a chance to do something that has only happened three other times in history for our sport. We have a chance to match something only the Lakers and the Celtics have done; win three (or more) championships in a row. Playoffs are next. |

MVP: Allen Iverson First things first. I have to give credit to three guys in particular from this team that went above and beyond whet they needed to do to get this #3. First of all, Grant Hill. The man came off the bench last year when we got Scottie. Then when Steve Nash went down with the broken leg, Grant stepped back in to the starting lineup and was our defensive stopper. He's got tremendous offense, and he never once complained about getting his shots. He went out there and was very effective at stonewalling the offense of the other team. Second guy is Allen Iverson. Allen is the uncrowned MVP of this league, and he stepped up big for us when we needed someone to play point for Steve. He proved that it's not just about the scoring, he can do it all. Last person. Steve Nash. Steve went down and was out for two months, and when he went down, the docs told him that if we made it to the finals, and all went well, he might be able to play again if the series went long. Well, in game 4 we lost Grant Hill to a groin injury, and Steve informed me he was ready to go. He played some in game 5, and played full minutes in game 6 and 7, both wins. It's that kind of unselfish attitude that made this team what we are again, for the third time in a row. NBA champs. |

2002-2003 Offseason Resigning Period - Ben Wallace, Dirk Nowitzki, Chris Gatling and Cory Alexander have all decided to test free agency. We'll definitely be offering Dirk whatever he wants. The others are expendable to a point. I'd love to get Wallace back, but after the work he did for us this year, I can't fault him for getting his money somewhere. He deserves it. Draft Lottery 1. Knicks (Bucks) 2. Pistons (Knicks) 3. Celtics 4. Bucks (Grizzlies) 5. Grizzlies (76ers) 6. 76ers (Warriors) 7. Warriors (Hornets) 8. Hornets (Lakers) 9. Lakers (Timberwolves) 10. Timberwolves (Rockets) 11. Rockets (Mavericks) 12. Mavericks (Pistons) 13. Bulls So the Pistons screwed up everything. I am honestly eying a certain giant 7'6" Chinese center, but now that we pick #5, I can't see that happening. Unless the 4 teams before us are idiots. NBA Draft R1-P5 - Grizzlies select Yao Ming, Center R2-P5 - Grizzlies select Nene Hilario, Power Forward R2-P9 - Grizzlies select Anderson Varejao, Power Forward R2-P29- Grizzlies select Nenad Krstic, Center I can't believe our luck. Seriously, 4 teams passed on a 7'6" center that can shoot. Not only that, but we really dug deep into the international talent pool in the draft this year. And if for some reason we don't resign Dirk, we've got some options on the inside now. Free Agency -Day 1- We offered the max to Dirk. He took it. We have a full roster now. We're a little heavy on PF's and C's, but I think we're all right. Maybe. -Day 2- No FA signings, but we did send Tyson Chandler and some draft considerations to the Bucks for Jamaal Tinsley. That will help the guard depth a little more. We also cut Evan Eschmeyer. 3 years, no improvement. -Day 3- With the extra roster space, we had room for one more, and we added John Barry to play backup SG with our MLE. I feel like the hardest part of this season is going to be who we put on IR. Roster Preview Yao Ming, C Dirk Nowitzki, PF Scottie Pippen, SF Allen Iverson, SG Steve Nash, PG Antoine Walker Grant Hill Jamaal Tinsley Nene Hilario Anderson Varejao Our starting 5 going in to the season is unreal. 4 former All-Stars and an International superstar. And two former NBA Sixth Man of the Year award winner off the bench. Add to that Jamaal who will be excellent coming off the bench for Nash, and the two rooks that showed what hard work in training camp can get you. It says something about how good your team is when John Barry, a former All-star in his own right, isn't even in the normal rotation. |

From the Desk of M. A. Perkins, Grizzlies GM For the last seven years, I have had the honor and the privilege to bring to prominence the Vancouver Grizzlies franchise. From the very first free agent signing, all the way to three NBA Championships, I've been at the head of this great organization. It has been a wonderful ride filled with more joy and happiness than anyone could ever know. That is why with great sadness and a heavy heart I am announcing that after the current NBA season, I will be stepping down from my position with the organization. I'd like to thank all person's involved in helping me make this franchise one of the premiere organizations in the NBA today, and I hope that tradition continues long after I am gone. Every person, from the team president all the way down to the trainers has made this ride all the more enjoyable, and I hope that where ever I might land, I am able to experience something this special again. Now, I would love nothing more than to go out this season and win a fourth NBA title, cementing this teams place in the annals of history, and marking it as one of the greatest of all time. Thank you. Spoiler: click to toggle
