So despite him being hurt and losing a good guy in Joe, we had out best month possibly to date. Even with a plethora of injuries to guys like Ben Wallace, Rod & Maurice Taylor we still pulled off win and closed to gap above us to just 1.5. I think a big help has been the steady hand of Antoine Walker who might not be the same as Ben, but provided good play for us. Rasheed has also made good use of his extra time and has been a solid hand off the bench thanks to his versatility. Rod will hopefully stabilize us off the bench and if we can keep this form we could jump into 1st.

Record: 43-28 (8-6), 4th Overall, 8.5 GB

So we pulled the trigger and dealt Ben & Maurice. It was a pretty smart move. Maurice had no place on our team and Ben was a rental. The Bucks are in a pretty bad way and while I was tempted to trade for this year's pick, I decided to set one up for a later date and if I really want someone this year, I can use it to sneak a 2nd pick from this draft. As for the team itself, injuries were a problem. Antoine missed some time as did Rod (Again) but we still kept our heads above .500 and we are starting to pull a little further away from the Jazz as we try to secure the 4 seed. The Kings have been on fire, winning 6 straight, 9 of their last ten and are an impressive 51-19. VC & Franchise have been getting more and more even in the PPG department while Ron has also been contributing well. With Walker not being our starter at PF though, I might make him our new 3rd option and let Ron focus more on using his great D to shutdown our opponents. We are entering the homestretch and the 3rd seed is still a very real possibility. Hopefully we play to our abilities and grab it.

Record: 50-32 (7-4), 4th Overall

Well it was a nice finish including some wins against Western foes like the Warriors, Kings & Trailbazers. We got some hardware this year with Steve Francis finishing 2nd on the All-NBA team and VC grabbing 3rd team honors. I feel that this team should get to the 2nd round. We are more solid than last season, we have experience under our belt and we also have home court. Unfortunately we got a pretty tough draw...

---

#4 LA Clippers (50-32) vs. #5 Houston Rockets (49-33)

Clippers Starting 5:
C - Donyell Marshall
PF - Antoine Walker
SF - Vince Carter
SG - Ron Artest
PG - Steve Francis

Key Subs: C Rasheed Wallace, PG Rod Strickland, SG Anfernee Hardaway

Houston Rockets Starting 5:
C - Hakeem Olajuwon
PF - Elton Brand
SF - Steve Smith
SG - Cuttino Mobley
PG - Kenny Anderson

Key Subs: PF Jeff Foster, SF Chris Morris, C Corey Hightower

So we face a team know for their punishing inside game. The plan for Houston is simple, have Kenny throw the rock to Hakeem or Brand or kick it out to a very good outside shooter in Steve Smith. The series really comes down to which defense can better cope with the opponents strength. Can Donyell, Antoine & Sheed handle Brand/Dream? By the same token can Steve Smith, Cuttino Mobley & Kenny Anderson take on the VC/Franchise/Artest trio? I think we have an edge but this really is close.

Western Conference Quarter-Finals

Clippers 83 - Rockets 73
- A solid win at home. The crowd was going nuts as we got a very impressive display by our unheralded D. Hakeem was held to just 11 points by a very game Donyell Marshall while Franchise, VC & Walker all had good games, Walker's making up for Elton Brand's performance. Now to win game 2 and keep home court.

Clipper 88 - Rockets 73
- An even better game for us, but the key was balance. While VC lead us in scoring, we had 5 scorers in double digits (Including 11 from Rasheed off the bench) and Franchise dished out 10 assists. We got bullied a bit more inside, but we held Steve Smith to just 4 points thanks to the great defensive play of Ron Artest. He just played shutdown all night and made our opponents more predictable.

Clippers 103 - Rockets 86
- He may be 37, but I'll be damned if Hakeem still isn't one of the best. He scorched us for 29 points tonight and seemed determined to win, even if it was by himself. Sadly, it pretty much was. VC almost matched him with 27 points while everyone else chipped in nicely. Franchise got 7 assists but no turnovers and we got a rare offensive outburst from Jerome James, who got 10 points as well. I really hope we can finish this in our next game and get a nice long rest. I still don't know who we will play, the Suns actually lead the Kings 2-1 right now.

Rockets 100 - Clippers 63
- This was just terrible. Hakeem & Brand brought my fears to life with a combined 49 points and 28 rebounds while we only managed two scorers with 14 points. We got out hustled on rebounds, couldn't hit our shots and played very poor D on the inside. We need to turn it around immediately back at home and end this series.

Clippers 88 - Rockets 80
- For the first time since 1975, the LA Clippers have won a series! This was a pretty close game and the Staples Center was rocking as our fans cheered us on. Antoine walker put on a pretty good show with 19 points and 15 rebounds. Ron lead us with 20 while Franchise added 16. Hakeem tried his best and was given a post-game standing ovation for what could have been his last game. It isn't our last game however, as we get ready to wait and see who we will face in the Semi-Finals!

Quarter-Finals:

West
#1 Sacramento Kings def. #8 Phoenix Suns 4-3
#2 San Antonio Spurs def. #7 Golden State Warriors 4-0
#3 Portland Trailbazers def. #6 Utah Jaz 4-1
#4 LA Clippers def. #5 Houston Rockets 4-1

East
#1 Toronto Raptors def. #8 Cleveland Cavaliers 4-0
#2 Boston Celtics def. #7 New Jersey Nets 4-1
#3 Indiana Pacers def. #6 Atlanta Hawks 4-0
#5 Detroit Pistons def. #4 Chicago Bulls 4-2

---

#1 Sacramento Kings (57-25) vs. #4 LA Clippers (50-32)

Kings Starting 5:
C - Chris Webber
PF - Vlade Divac
SF - Peja Stojakovic
SG - Hersey Hawkins
PG - Jason Williams

Key Subs: C Scot Pollard, PG Vernon Maxwell, PF Lawrence Funderbunk

Clippers Starting 5:
C - Donyell Marshall
PF - Antoine Walker
SF - Vince Carter
SG - Ron Artest
PG - Steve Francis

Key Subs: C Rasheed Wallace, PG Rod Strickland, SG Anfernee Hardaway

So here they are. The best team in the NBA. This is another team who just pound you in the paint and the trio of Webber, Divac & Pollard is a headache for any big men to deal with. Donyell, Antoine & Rasheed are going to have their hands full here. From SF to PG they probably aren't as good as us on offense but they do a good job of shutting opponents down. Hersey Hawkins in particular has been stellar on D and I am sure the 34 year old is eager to get a title. I think that this series will require what the last did. Our big three on offense will need to try and produce against the tough D of the Kings while we need to find some way of slowing down the three headed beast that is Webber, Divac & Pollard. I think we can do it, and the Suns showed that this team isn't invincible as they looked at points this year. We will just have to see how it all goes though.

Western Conference Semi-Finals

Kings 103 - Clippers 80

- Not the start we wanted. Vlade dropped 33 points AND 18 rebounds making Walker just look silly at points. CWebb also added 25 and 10 to show just how good their front court is. Despite having 5 guys in double figures I think Franchise's 7 turnovers is what really killed us. You can't keep giving away the ball like that, especially as the point guard. We also need to hustle a lot more to get boards. We can still split the road series at least.

Kings 95 - Clippers 91
- Agonizingly close loss here. Once again it was Vlade (28/10) & CWebb (19/18) who killed us but we got stand-out performances by Ron Artest (19/6/3/3) & Steve Francis (18/11/6) who only had 3 turnovers. We just seemed to be missing that last few shots to pull off the road upset. We have to win game 3 and probably game 4. The Staples Center has been good to us (32-9) as we had the 2nd best home record after the Kings. Let's hope that advantage continues after tonight.

Clippers 97 - Kings 85
- We really stepped up tonight, especially Franchise who almost had a triple double (25/9/9). Again they bullied us inside but we let almost nothing go for the rest of their offense while getting good contributions from VC (14/3/4) Ron (13/5) and especially Antoine (18/12). We feel confident now and if we win our next game things will be all square again and it'll be back to anybodies ball game.

Clippers 106 - Kings 102
- A nailbiter, but this time we came out on the right side. Our big three all showed up with Francis (28/10/7) leading the way along with VC (21/4/4/2) & Artest (20/4/4/4). Rasheed also kept up his good post-season form (13/7) and we made key free throws and closed up on D late to hold out for a win. At 2-2 it's obvious the next game is huge for both of us. A win would give us a chance to close things out at home while a loss means that we would have to play in Sactown again. It's going to be a challenge that I hope my team is up for.

Clippers 105 - Kings 84
- Stunned. That's the only way to describe the Sacramento fans. A in was obviously possible, but by 21 points against the NBA's best home team? Everyone chipped in for us with 6 guys hitting double figures and spreading the points pretty evenly too. This was thnkas in large part to Franchise (18/14/4). We seem content to let only Vlade & Webber beat us, and it's paid off three straight times. Now we go to the Staples Center with a chance to bring this team where it has never been before... the conference finals.

Clippers 71 - Kings 70
- WE DID IT! In a pretty stunning upset, we now find outselves in the Western Conference finals for the first time in franchise history! A surprising performance from Donyell Marshall (17Pts, 13 Reb, 3 Stl, 3 Blk) pulled us through in another tight contest. Like the last 3 games we just let the Kings into the paint with Vlade (18 pts, 20 reb, 4 Stl, 3 blk) & Webber (25 Pts, 16 Reb, 5 Ast, 3 Blk) tearing us up pretty good. It was team basketball that won the day though and now we are going to the conference finals with 4 straight wins and a chance to change the image of this team forever.

Conference Semi-Finals:

#3 Portland Trailbazers (53-29) vs. #4 LA Clippers (50-32)

Kings Starting 5:

C - Kelvin Cato
PF - Tim Thomas
SF - Antonio McDyess
SG - Glen Rice
PG - Mike James

Key Subs: PF Brian Skinner, SF Ron Harper, PF Jermaine O'Neal

Clippers Starting 5:
C - Donyell Marshall
PF - Antoine Walker
SF - Vince Carter
SG - Ron Artest
PG - Steve Francis

Key Subs: C Rasheed Wallace, PG Rod Strickland, SG Anfernee Hardaway

So here we are. 4 wins away from a spot in the NBA finals. Standing in our way is a much more balanced opponent than we have faced our first two rounds. The Trailbazers use an inside/outside duo of Rice & McDyess to stretch the D and cause headache's for opponents. While they don't have a true 3rd scorer, Mike James has played surprisingly well in his sophmore year. The key match-up's are obvious. Artest & VC need to slow down Rice & McDyess while we need for Steve to take full advantage of anytime he's matched up with Mikes James. Ron harper is a tough glue guy and the big men will be a problem for Antoine & Donyell. I actually feel confident we can win this series if we keep Rice & McDuess under control. The real key is to make the most of our chances against their lesser defenders (Rice, James) and not let the big two beat us.

Western Conference Finals

Trailbazers 99 -Clippers 87
- Not only did Rice have a good day on us, but Kelvin Cato dropped 18 while also nabbing 14 rebounds. Rebounding was the difference today. They grabbed the boards and seemed to want it more. It's tough on the road, but if we can win the next one it would give us a much bigger boost heading back to the Staples Center.

Trailbazers 95 - Clippers 88
- Once again Glen Rice (23 Pts, 6 reb) was more than our D could handle. The rebounding differential is killing us right now. We got 46 boards compared to 62 by them. That is unacceptable. I know we are a little shorter, but you have to try harder than that. Our best player was VC (25 Pts, 4 Blks) but it was a pretty poor performance all around. We can't let them bully us around in the paint or this series will be over real soon.

Clippers 103 - Trailbazers 83
- That's what I'm talking about. Donyell Marshall (23 pts, 13 reb, 3 stl) stepped up and lead us as we cruised to a nice 20 point win at home. Our D was much better, switching to our last round strategy of cutting the opposition down to two options. Even more important though was that we out rebounded them and showed that with more touches, we don't miss. We need to win our next game to get things level and hopefully the energy of our crowd can help us make that happen.

Clippers 110 - Trailbazers 69
- Domination. We are just lights out at home. Franchise (29 pts, 8 ast, 7 reb), Walker (24 pts, 13 reb) & everyone else were just firing on all cylinders. We grabbed 70 (!) rebounds today and other than Glen Rice (22 pts) we didn't let them score on us. We are feeling the momentum now and everyone knows that a win next game will mean we can close things out at home. Coach has been drilling that into the players head and if we play like this it can happen.

Trailbazers 97 - Clippers 96
- Heart breaker. This was just two great teams slugging it out like a heavyweight title fight. We combined for just 22 turnovers, shot the exact same from the field and only 1 rebound separated us. It was really about as identical as you can get between two teams. Individual play wasn't even worth mentioning. Both teams had their guys leave it all out on the floor and we just didn't win. Still we haven't lost at home in the playoffs yet, and we can't afford to lose that streak now.

Trailbazers 96 - Clippers 92
- And so ends our dream run on another close encounter. First thing that has to be mentioned is Rasheed Wallace (22 pts, 9 reb) who was stunning in his 36 minutes of play. Everyone played their hearts out, but we just couldn't finish our late comeback (29 4th quarter points) and now will have a long off-season to wonder what if. Still, I am so proud of what we have done. We set new records for wins and got further than this team ever has. Even better is we are young, we have draft picks and we should only get better from here. Things are finally looking up for the Clippers.

2001-2002 Opening Day Rosters

Starting 5:
C - Ben Wallace (B- D- D+ A- A-)
PF - Donyell Marshall (B- C+ D+ B+ B)
SF - Vince Carter (A- B- C A C)
SG - Steve Francis (B- B+ B+ B C)
PG - Rod Strickland (B- C A- A- C-)

2nd String:
C - Jeff Foster (C+ D C+ B A-)
PF - Antoine Walker (B- B- C B- C+)
SF - Ron Artest (B B C A C-)
SG - Ron Artest
PG - Tony Delk (C+ C+ B- B+ C-)

3rd String:
C - Rasheed Wallace (B- C+ D B+ C)
PF - Jeff Foster
SF - Antoine Walker
SG - Anfernee 'Penny' Hardaway (C+ C+ C+ A- C-)
PG - Anfernee Hardaway

Bench:
C Calvin Booth (C C- D- B C+)

Injured Reserve:
PF Darius Miles (B- D+ C B C+)
PF Kenny Thomas (C+ C C C+ C+)
PG Pooh Richardson (C D C C+ D)

So I am taking a somewhat brand new approach on the advice of our Head Coach. Steve seems to have been a bit off on his passing but I think a move to SG will let him focus more on his scoring touch while still letting him use his great handling. Ron is an immediate candidate for 6th man and his swingman skills and defense should help us a great deal off the bench. Rod is more of a 'true' point guard as he has excellent court vision and handling and can come inside than kick out. I'm still not thrilled with our front court as Donyell has regressed a little and while Ben was nice at a discount, he's still very short for a center and seems a little less threatening on D.

Jeff Foster should provide some rebounding off the bench while Antoine will add points. Tony Delk is good enough to start on most teams and is a great safety valve for us. Rasheed is again relegated to the 3rd string, but don't be surprised if he yet again sneaks his way into the 2nd string. Round us out is Penny whose handling is back down but is still a very solid 3rd stringer who can play combo guard well.

The rest are pretty much filler. Darius seems like a bust without playing a minute, Kenny Thomas is a long term project at best and Booth & Pooh are basically filler until their deals run out. Pooh is the only original Clippers left from when I started... other than Vince of course.

Predictions? Well I think we can make a run for the 1 seed but I am still not sold on our big men. We really could use a dominating presence in the post and we might try to strike a deal for one at some point. Even without it though I think we have a very good team and if we play to our abilities we could have a very good year.

Well that was awful. Things aren't working as planned and I am pondering making changes to our line-up. We really don't have a 3rd scorer after VC & Franchise and without it we are sinking. Hopefully month 2 sees us get back to what we shoul dbe doing.

So we got a blessing in disguise. Rod went down for a week and a bit and we won every single game, handily. When he came back I decided there was no reason to break up 'the band' and we managed to go 2-2. We've gone to our traditional VC - Artest - Francis trio with Rod taking up a 6th man role. Hopefully the results stay as good as they have been, but we are activley trying to clear out some space with our guards. Just having a hard time getting a good deal for one of Penny or Rod.

So despite a worse month we've moved up to the 4th seed. There seems to be a slight shift in the West & East, with our side getting worse while they get better. Still we had a winning month but I am starting to consider a big trade to get us a legitimate threat from our C/PF spots. Ben Wallace is nice for his D and should stick around but Donyell just isn't good enough to make us part of the elite. I'll be weighing options and possibly trading picks as we try to progress instead of regress.
