Year Two (2011) | Week 8 Review

USC Trojans at Washington State Cougars

USC - 28
WSU - 17

Player Stats:
RB Michael Ellis (MPH)

This is a great game for Ellis but as good as this game was for him he still has a long way to go to become an elite college halfback. Ellis has been wildly inconstant this season, one game he'll run all over people and be used all over the field and the next week he will almost disappear completely. He's putting up solid overall numbers but I'm beginning to wonder if he's capable of being an every down back who can get it done on a weekly basis or not.

POTG: Matt Barkley

Offensive line can't block? Two tackles - including starting RT Marcus Hall out of action for several weeks? Having to run around and try not to get killed while somehow reading the defense and getting the ball to receivers in open space before getting a face full of FieldTurf? Apparently not a problem for Chris Ticon. With all the problems surrounding this team coming off a crushing defeat at the hands of Penn State, OSU Quarterback Chris Ticon apparently used the bye week to learn what it takes to become an elite college Quarterback. The only question is, did the of the rest of the team figure it out as well?

POTG: Chris Ticon (2) (Mofo)

Tennessee Volunteers at Alabama Crimson Tide

TENN - 3
BAMA - 34

Player Stats:
QB Donald Doccers(Doc)

Passing
QB Rating / Completions / Attempts / Yards / TD / INT / CMP% / APC / Long / Sacks

.....4..........12......3.0....0......5........4.....0.......1.......0

Though the game started out slowly, Alabama got 3 points in the first quarter and it took nearly 13 minutes for Tennessee to answer back with a chip-shot of their own. It seemed like this was going to be a close, tough, defensive battle.. that is until Donald Doccers hit a streaking Michael Williams down the middle of the field for a 52 yard touchdown with 8 minutes to go in the 2nd quarter. It was like a knife in the heart of the Volunteer faithful and old rocky top could do little more to contain the Crimson Tide as they ended the game with 31 straight points - four touchdowns and a field goal - to put the Vols away.

WR Christian Benjamin(CC)

Receiving
Receptions / Yards / AVG / TD / Long / YAC / Drops
......3.............42.....14.0.....0......21......10.......0

Kick Return
Returns / Yards / AVG / TD / Long

Well it became pretty clear that Tennessee's game-plan was to play heavy against the run and blanket Christian Benjamin with double coverage all day long and hope that that would be enough to sneak out a win. It also became pretty clear that that plan just isn't going to work against a team with this much talent. Yes the Vols stopped Benjamin and did hold Mark Ingram under 100 yards (barely) but that doesn't do much good when the Tight End eats your secondary for lunch to the tune of 2 touchdown receptions and 89 yards and you can't find the end-zone.

POTG: Michael Williams

Well, last week the media openly questioned whether Michael Ellis would show up and be consistent. He must have been paying attention because you don't get much more consistent than what we just got these last two games. He equaled or improved in almost every category this week, but we will have to see whether this was a sign of a superstar in bloom or just a bright spot on an otherwise dull 2011 campaign.

Ticon was running for his life once again but didn't fare so well through the air as he did last game. He did show some surprising quickness running for short yardage and a couple of scores. One of which was a 2 yard scamper late in the first quarter to put the first points on the board in the game and the other a shifty 5 yard dive that put the game out of reach with 4:07 left in the fourth quarter.

Can't argue with those numbers though I thought they'd be a bit higher considering the competition level. 550 yards of total offense is nothing to scoff at though. Doctors is proving to be a great young superstar, the only question is whether his star will be able to shine it's brightest on a team that isn't prone to slinging the ball all over the field 50 times a game.

WR Christian Benjamin(CC)

Receiving
Receptions / Yards / AVG / TD / Long / YAC / Drops
......8.............80.....10.0.....1......21......46.......0

He's getting his touches and making good plays but somehow I think this is about par for the course for him this season. He's one of the most electrifying talents in the game but on a team with this much talent one ball simply isn't enough.

This was a different type of game that really showcased the abilities Michael Ellis has when he isn't lined up in the backfield. He was limited in this game and I'm not sure if he took plays off due to a minor injury or if he was just tired or what it was. In any case what he lacked in quantity he more than made up for with quality. One of these days this kid is going to put it all together and be a real star in college football... until then it seems like it will be an interesting ride to say the least.

The five touchdown passes are nice.. everything else, not so much. He's seriously going to get killed behind that line if they don't improve drastically. There isn't on player on the line that hasn't given up at least two sacks and the two starting tackles have already combined to give up 11 sacks on the year.

Pretty much par for the course here. A low completion percentage and an abysmal 62% Red Zone percentage (8-1-4) are definitely worrisome but considering they had to play the entire game without Mark Ingram's services (Questionable with a strained Achilles) I'd say the Tide as a whole did pretty well.

Just when it seems like he's finding a groove and settling in for a solid season of sharing he goes and hogs the ball and chews up a ton of yardage in the process. With Ingram (Achilles) out it was important for him to step up and he definitely did that.

Ouch. That was just a brutal game for the Trojans. Ellis had a very nice game stat wise but the team just had no answer for the Husky offense and Husky Kicker/Punter extraordinaire Erik Folk did his job going 4-4 on field goals and pinning the Trojans deep in their own end all day long. It also doesn't help when you fumble three times and give up a pick 6 either.

Solid game through the air once again for Ticon but that line is still very shaky. He's running all over the place and scrambling for yardage when he can but he's not exactly mobile. On a positive note Marcus Hall is back from injury and manning the right tackle position and LT Sam Longo returns soon. On the downside the line wasn't exactly great even when those two guys were healthy so we'll have to see if they can improve enough to at least keep Ticon upright once in a while.

Well I can honestly say I wasn't expecting that. In a game pitting #1 against #2 I thought we'd see an epic battle. Instead we saw an epic ass-kicking by the Alabama Crimson Tide. Doccers made some big plays, and also made a couple boneheaded ones as well by throwing an INT that Tiger Edwards returned for the only LSU touchdown of the day. Even with Ingram still nursing his sprained Achilles this team just rolls right along as Trent Richardson slashed and dashed for 136 yards and a touchdown on the ground and 59 yards and 2 more touchdowns by air.

On a day that was pretty run heavy Christian Benjamin puts in a solid if not overwhelmingly impressive day. The young freshman is always itching for the deep ball but as every young freshman must learn, there are days when the short and physical stuff is what is necessary to win the game. He's putting together an impressive freshman campaign though.

A nice rebound game for the Trojans. USC got off to a fast start and just rode the game out in the end. Ellis scored two first quarter touchdowns and USC added two more in the 2nd quarter to go up 28-0 before Arizona finally started putting it together. The Wildcats tried making a comeback late but USC held them at bay fairly easily milking the clock and running the ball wit Ellis leading the way with workmanlike production and chain moving runs.

Chris Ticon never really got in rhythm and left the game late in the first quarter with an undisclosed injury. Coach Jim Tressel did say he was confident that Ticon would be cleared to practice this week and would be back to start next week's game against rival Michigan. Good news for the Buckeyes is that even without Ticon under center and being down 14-7 going into the fourth quarter the team was still able to put it together and pull out the win with a 10-0 fourth quarter scoring run. OSU Backup QB Ken Guiton stepped in and had a solid game going 15-31 for 164 yards with one touchdown and an interception and the Ohio State running game led as usual by senior standout Dan Herron put the Buckeyes in the win column for the 9th time this season.

Now this is just getting ridiculous. Is there a team in the nation that can stand up with the Tide this season? Alabama's offense is still showing the same weaknesses they've exhibited all season going 6-19 (31%) on 3rd down and 9-3-3 (66%) in the red zone and that is something they still need to try to correct going forward but it hasn't really stopped them from winning big and this really wasn't a game at all. The score was 31-0 going into the half and when Auburn did finally get on the board it was on a fluke 94 yard touchdown run on 3rd and 8 by Fuller. And when considering that they did have that 94 yard run the fact that Auburn finished the game with a total of 96 rushing yards and 153 yards of total offense is just flat out domination by the Alabama defense.

WR Christian Benjamin(CC)

Very good statistical day for Benjamin and the fact that he was definitely the 2nd leading receiver for the Crimson Tide in this game shows you just how unbelievably explosive this offense can be when it wants to be. He's having an excellent season and if he doesn't let his ego get out of control he could be on course to have one of the greatest wide receiving campaigns in Alabama history.
