Year Two (2011) | Week 13 Review

--------------------------

Oregon Ducks at USC Trojans

OREG - 19
USC - 17

Player Stats:
RB Michael Ellis (MPH)

This team is just way too inconsistent. They seem to follow up every good game with a really bad one and need to really step it up this off-season if they want to compete nationally. They need a complete overhaul on the offensive line as talent is down and depth is a big concern across the board but by far their weakest link is in the secondary. With only two legit CB's on the depth chart they need a maximum influx of talent to step on campus and compete right away.

POTG: LaMichael James

The Ohio State Buckeyes at Michigan Wolverines

BUCKS - 6
MICH - 34

Player Stats:
QB Chris Ticon(Mofo)

......8...........-2.........-0.2......2........0........0.....0.......0.......0

for the second week in a row Chris Ticon left the game early due to injury and was not table to return, however this time Backup QB Ken Guiton simply wasn't up to the task and sputtered into a 12-31, 92 yard game with no touchdowns and one INT. Meanwhile Dan Herron was held under 100 yards on the day and couldn't ever get any real momentum at all. Ticon should be ready to go again next week and hopefully this injury issue doesn't become a regular occurrence.

POTG: Tate Forcier

Georgia State Panthers (FCS) at Alabama Crimson Tide

Nothing like scheduling a FCS opponent midseason to pad the stats, get some rest and hope the rest of the top 10 fold like a cheap tent against real competition. C'mon Bama I know Slick Nick is your head coach and you've never been above taking the soft road.. but even this should be beneath you with a team that loaded.

WR Christian Benjamin(CC)

Considering the level of competition I was sort of expecting a bit more substantial stats for Christian Benjamin. Nonetheless a solid stat bump on the season and they even let him line up and take a touch from the backfield.

A model of inconsistant consistancy. Once again coming off a bad loss the Trojans put together a solidly convincing win. Ellis ran solidly and his two recieving TD's opened the game up nicely for his team but he really should be doing much better than he has with his talent.

POTG: Matt Barkley

At least he finished the game. And not only that he played pretty darn well. A good showing heading into the Rose Bowl and hopefully this team can continue to improve and go into the offseason with some positive momentum. Most of the pieces are in place to contend again next year but rebuilding the offensive line will be imperitive this recruiting cycle.

A solid win against another overmatched OOC opponent to tune up for the SEC Championship Game against the cinderella team of the 2011 season, the 7-5 (5-3) SEC East champion, Vanderbilt Commodores! (Which hopefully HB Mark Ingram will finally be back for) On a side note... nice stats for Backup Bama QB AJ McCarron going 1-1 for a 43 yard touchdown pass to WR Brandon Gibson earning him a nice 791.1 QB rating

Alabama Crimson Tide vs. Vanderbilt Commodores

VANDY - 3

Rushing

......4..........8......2.0....0.......6........0.....0.......0.......0

With Ingram finally back and healthy the Tide focused heavily on the run and with a comfortable lead Doccers' day was basically over at halftime. Undefeated regular season and SEC champions is not bad for a freshman QB though.

WR Christian Benjamin(CC)

This was a very run heavy gameplan but Benjamin still had a solid game production wise. Easily the top freshman WR if not the best WR period in College Football.

POTG: Mark Ingram

In one of the most lopsided championship games in the history of college football the Alabama Crimson Tide steamroll the Utah Utes in dominating fashion racking up 566 yards of total offenseand holding the ball for nearly 40 minutes of gametime. Starting QB Donald Doccers had a strong game before being taken out at the begining of the fourth quarter to get the backups a little work on the big stage. Alabama was able to run and pass at will over the Utah defense however they still struggled yet again to find the endzone once they enter the redzone with 7 redzone opportunites the Tide took it to the house a mere two times and were forced to kick 5 fieldgoals for a disapointing 7-2-5 redzone efficency statistic. Defensively is where this game was truly won and lost however. Utah was simply never able to do anything at all against the Crimson Tide defense. The Utes ended the game with zero redzone opportunites. They had just 97 passing yards and 72 rushing yards for 169 yards of total offense and recorded a paltry 7 first downs with a 3-17 (17%) 3rd down conversion ratio.

Another great game for Christian Benjamin, however he didn't find the endzone on this day. But I think on the biggest stage of his career thus far the young freshman performed exceptionally well and going forward a game like this can only improve his confidnence even further.. and winning a national title isn't bad either.

2011 All-NCAA Freshman All-American
2011 All-PAC 10 2nd Team All-American

Summary:
Solid Freshman campaign for Michael Ellis but overall it has to have been a disapointing season for the Trojans of USC. Hopefully with a little more age, a few more recruits and a lot of luck next season the Trojans can get back to being in the BCS picture and Michael Ellis can live up to the hype of being recruited to be the next great USC running back.

1X National Offensive Player of the Week
3x Big 10 Offensive Player of the Week
5x Player of the Game Award Winner

Summary:
Though this was a team that could have and probably should have been a national title game participant a few unlucky breaks and some bad bounces is all it takes to knock you down sometimes. Hopefully with some more experiance and some new talent the team can improve and gel to take this team even further next year and in the future. Better offensive line play is definately needed to take the next step, but the biggest key to keep an eye on next year for improvement is the # of takeaways the team can create defensively. Limiting the other team's opportunities to score while giving your own team the ball a couple extra times a game can go a long way to deciding which trophy you are playing for at the end of the year.

Summary:
Well it doesn't get any better than that. Undefeated. National Champions. Easily the most potent offense and most dominant defense in the country. A Heisman Trophy. A Belitnikof award winner, and a few school records to boot. What in the hell can they do next year that could possibly top that?
