The BCS. For all it's flaws, it's benefits... it can not create the playoffs that most college fans dream of seeing. There are countless arguments for against, and most are valid. But what if? What if, starting in 1998, there was a playoff system implemented? I will run said system. Using the top 16 teams in the BCS rankings, teams will be seeded as such, 1 vs. 16 ect... The brackets will work similar to those of the NCAA Basketball tournament. After the initial seeding, it's straight out. As a compromise (And because I am a Mid-Major whore) there must be at LEAST one non-AQ in every post-season. Usually this isn't a problem, but I have spotted a few. So, let us begin in 1998... --- National Champions: 1998 - Ohio State (1) Def. Florida State 13-9 1999 - Marshall (1) Def. Virginia Tech 23-13 Final Four Appearances: Ohio State (1) Florida State (1) Kansas State (1) Tennessee (1) Michigan (1) Marshall (1) Virginia Tech (1) Nebraska (1) All-Time Records: Ohio State 4-0 Marshall 4-0 Virginia Tech 3-1 Kansas State 3-2 Florida State 3-2 Nebraska 2-1 Tennessee 2-2 Michigan 2-2 Southern Miss 1-1 Alabama 1-1 UCLA 1-1 Arizona 1-1 Wisconsin 1-2 Florida 1-2 Texas A&M 1-2 Texas 0-1 Penn State 0-1 Minnesota 0-1 Michigan State 0-1 Arkansas 0-1 Virginia 0-1 Air Force 0-1 Georgia Tech 0-1 Tulane 0-1 Syracuse 0-1 --- #1 Tennessee vs. #16 Air Force #8 Florida vs. #9 Wisconsin #5 UCLA vs. #12 Virginia #4 Ohio State vs. #13 Arkansas #6 Texas A&M vs. #11 Nebraska #3 Kansas State vs. #14 Georgia Tech #7 Arizona vs. #10 Tulane #2 Florida State vs. #15 Syracuse So, predictably, the top 5 or 6 teams are all favorites. Some spoilers could include undefeated Tulane, the Wisconsin/Florida winner and Syracuse lead by Donovan McNabb. Edited by Hajjhowe, Jan 16 2011, 04:02 AM.

Over matched Falcons swept aside by Volunteers - The service academies first trip to the BCS playoffs did not go as hopped. Tennessee snuffed out the Air Forces attempts to run the ball, holding them to just 2.9 yards a carry and also picking off two passes. The Volunteers ground game meanwhile was powered by future NFL backs Jamal Lewis & Travis Henry who each got over 100 yards along with 3rd stringer Travis Stephens. A very impressive win for the favorites who just ran all over the Falcons D. Tennessee 35 - Air Force 3 Gators roll Badgers - The Swamp lived up to it's name, with a light rain giving less than ideal conditions for either team. It was a very fast start for the Gators however, as they jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter a never looked back. The rain caused some fumble issues, including three from the Badgers including one on their opening drive that lead to 6 points for their opponents. Receiver Travis McGriff didn't seem as bothered with 5 catches for 144 yards, including a TD. A big win for Florida as they prepare to face their SEC rivals Tennessee with an eye on revenge for an OT loss their the 3rd week of the season. Florida 47 - Wisconsin 17 Edited by Hajjhowe, Nov 21 2010, 06:21 AM.

#5 UCLA vs. #12 Virginia These two teams slugged it out in a very close encounter in LA. The heat didn't seem to bother Cade McNown who completed 15 of his 20 passes and scored 2 TD's in this tight affair. The Cavaliers were in a hole arly, simply having a hrd time stopping McNown and the Bruins passing game. Their own QB, Aaron Brooks, was also efficient but ineffective. Halftime saw Virginia trailing 17-0 before they made a 4th quarter comeback that fell just short after the Bruins convereted a late first down to run out the clock. The win is good news for UCLA, but show they might have trouble closing out some games. UCLA 27 - Virginia 21 #4 Ohio State vs. #13 Arkansas The Buckeyes left little doubt at who was better, manhandling the Razorbacks at home in front of a rabid Horseshoe crowd. Their SEC opposition had a hard time getting any ground game going against the Buckeyes D, and despite a solid performance from Clint Stoerner he was outdone by game MVP Joe Germaine who was 20/24 for 308 yards, 4 TD's and no picks. Ohio State also added 248 yards on the ground in the route. The win should give the Big Ten powerhouse confidence heading into their next home game against UCLA. Ohio State 41 - Arkansas 10 |

#6 Texas A&M vs. #11 Nebraska A vintage display of defensive football saw these two Big 12 rivals struggle to get past the other teams defense. The passing games threw for a combined 57 yards and 1 pick while neither team managed a TD. Nebraska's option attack was particularly flustered, unable to get far and only managing one field goal attempt, which Kris Brown hit from 38 yards out. Texas A&M was equally incapable of scoring but despite missing two kicks, Russell Bynum nailed three short ones as the Aggies won an ugly affair. Neither teams offense impressed, but the Aggies will be hoping their D can keep up this level and the offense can catch up soon enough. Texas A&M 9 - Nebraska 3 #3 Kansas State vs. #14 Georgia Tech The Wildcats outclassed their opponents on both sides of the ball as they shut down Joe Hamilton and the Jacket's offense while also running off 30 points of their own. Eric Hickson ran up, down and all over the Jackets while the defense caused 2 picks while giving up just 3 yards per carry to the Tech offense. Kansas State also dominated time of possession with 37:44 thanks to a pounding rush attack from 5 different backs and QB Michael Bishop (Who was 3-5 on his pass attempts). The win will make the Wildcats feel good, but they'll be looking for revenge on an A&M team that upset them in the Big 12 title game... something the Aggies will hope to do again. Kansas State 30 - Georgia Tech 3 |

#7 Arizona vs. #10 Tulane For 3 quarters the Green Wave hung with a very game Arizona team and in fact lead the game for a few minutes. The 4th was a total disaster though and Tulane was wiped out in the desert by the Wildcats. Trung Canidate & Kelvin Eafon took turns pounding the Tulane D which struggled to handle the assault. They answered back well however, with Toney Converse & Michael Burks putting up solid numbers and Shaun King being the best QB of the day (14/18, 172 Yards, 1 TD). A lost fumble and some efficient play from Arizona was too much however and ended the Green waves hopes of creating the first upset in the BCS playoff system. The Wildcats will feel happy with their offensive display, but might be concerned with their D. Arizona 43 - Tulane 27 #2 Florida State vs. #15 Syracuse The Orange lead until 7:05 of the first quarter, 3-0. After that they gave up 44 unanswered points in a stomping on the road at the Sunshine State. Donovan McNabb was held in check, leaving Syracuse with basically no hope against the mighty Seminoles. Travis Minor was particularly effective with 198 yards and 2 TD's during the beatdown. The Noles' will feel good after running over Syracuse and will have to be considered amongst the favorites to win it all if they are even close to their form here. Florid State 44 - Syracuse 3 --- Elite 8: #1 Tennessee vs. #8 Florida #4 Ohio State vs. #5 UCLA #3 Kansas State vs. #6 Texas A&M #2 Florida State vs. #7 Arizona |

#1 Tennessee vs. #8 Florida Two SEC rivals met, and it went down to the wire. The Gators seemed poised for the upset with a 22-13 lead in the 4th. Doug Johnson, who was having a great game, had his team down to the 22 yard line. He took his three step drop but a badly timed screen was picked off by Deon Grant, giving the Volunteers new life! What followed was an 11 play, 78 yard drive that ended with Tee Martin leaping over his O-Line in in for the score, leaving his Volunteers down 22-19! Still, the Gators lead and with 3:20 left they needed just a few first downs to win and get the first upset of the BCS playoffs. Again, Doug Johnson lead his team downfield and all the way to the 7 yard line. Multiple timeouts slowed the clock, but the killer came when Terry Jackson tried to pound ahead for one yard, but the ball popped out and the Volunteers recovered at the 5 with 1:22 left! Behind the suddenly steady arm of Tee martin and following a HUGE draw play for 42 yards, the Volunteers got all the way down to the 16 before Martin spiked the ball. Despite steady 10 yard winds, Jeff Hall kept his composure and sent the 33 yarder right down the middle sending the Rocky Top into madness. With that the Volunteers survive and showed a lot of grit. But with the Final 4, homefield leaves and all games become Neutral. They'll be happy to have skipped past their rivals, but can they survive the next round too? Tennessee 23 - Florida 22 #4 Ohio State vs. #5 UCLA Unlike the Volunteers, OSU left no doubt about who was the better team. Behind a pair of incredible performances from Joe Montgomery (232 yards, 3 TD) & Michael Wiley (216 Yards, 1 TD) the Buckeyes just dominated an overmatched and sometimes helpless UCLA side. The Ohio State defense gave up close to nothing on the ground, stiffling the Bruins to less than a yard per carry and forcing the game into Cade McNown hands. With such a lead they didn't hold back either, blitzing the UCLA QB for 7 sacks on the day. It's a very impressive win against the #5 team in the country, and right now this team will feel like it can beat anyone. Ohio State 45 - UCLA 6 |

#3 Kansas State vs. #6 Texas A&M The Big 12 title rematch was every bit the slugfest you'd expect. Oce again Texas A&M's defense proved stifling. The low scoring affair saw yet another 6-3 A&M lead late. In fact the lead lasted until there was 1:36 left and K-State had the ball. Michael Bishop, who had attempted just 4 passes before (3 of which were completed) suddenly went very, very deep on a hanging bomb to Darnell McDonald! Having beaten the safety, McDonald ran untouched 55 yards for the score with just 35 seconds left in the game! Texas A&M did drive back down, getting to the 35 yard line with no timeouts left, but a holding penalty ended the game, and the hopes for the Aggies fans. For the Wildcats it was a narrow win as they avenge the Big 12 title loss and keep their national title dreams alive. Kansas State 10 - Texas A&M 6 #2 Florida State vs. #7 Arizona While hanging tough, Arizona ultimately proved unable to keep up with the Noles', as the #2 team in the country slipped by them and into the finals 4 with a comfortable W. A poor performance by Chris Weinke was negated by a tough defense and a solid ground game that churned out 242 yards and generated 2 of the teams 4 touchdowns. The Wildcats not only couldn't run well, but also had a poor day from Keith Smith who was just 7-20. The win will leave Florida State feeling good heading into their clash with the next set of Wildcats as they try to stay on course for a national title birth. Florida State 36 - Arizona 17 --- Final Four: #1 Tennessee vs. #4 Ohio State #2 Florida State vs. #3 Kansas State |

#1 Tennessee vs. #4 Ohio State The Buckeyes, lead by a punishing defensive attack, overwhelmed the nations top team and sent the Volunteers spiralling out of the title game with a humbling defeat. Travis Henry & Jamal Lewis, previously two very tough backs, were shut down all day getting just under 2 yards a carry. Tee Martin meanwhile threw two picks and completed less than half his passes. The Buckeyes looked as dominant as they have the first two games and ride into the title game as, arguably, the favorites regardless of opposition. Of all the ways to have our first 'upset'... this one sure left an impact. Ohio State 37 - Tennessee 6 #2 Florida State vs. #3 Kansas State An absolute grinder went down to the wire as the #2 and #3 teams in the nation showed that defense ruled the NCAA. There were no touchdowns in this affair with the game being tied at 3-3 and a field position battle as the game ticked away the 4th quarter. In that 4th, the Seminols got the ball with just under 5 minutes left and finally put together a passable drive. Getting down to the 36 yard line, Sebastian Janakowski made a booming, 53 yard field goal with 1:46 left to give his Noles' the late lead. The game now in his hands, Michael Bishop made the first mistake of his playoffs... a interception right into the hands of Mario Edwards. After somehow getting a three and out, the Wildcats still mustered nothing as Florida State just managed to hold on for a 6-3 W. The win leaves the Seminoles as probable underdogs despite seeding. They were a little close to Arizona and barely won here, while Ohio State has just ran over everything put in their path thus far. Will the finals see the same? Florida State 6 - Kansas State 3 --- National Championship #2 Florida State vs. #4 Ohio State |

Posted ImagePosted Image #2 Florida State vs. #4 Ohio State Two top contenders battled, but in the end only one emerged winner. Taking a 13-3 lead into the half the Buckeyes felt good. Despite offensive troubles (Which plagued both teams) the game was in their hands. FSU meanwhile seemed like they'd be the next team unable to score a TD against THE Ohio State. But they fought hard and Chris Weinke hit an 8 yard pass for a TD halfway through the 3rd... before Sebastian Janikowski missed the PAT. Needing a TD with 5 minutes left, the Seminoles matched down the field all the way to the Buckeyes 3. With 2:10 left Travis Minor was stuffed for the 2nd straight time on 4th down, giving the Bucks the ball at their own 5. After some very questionable play calling including two pass attempts that were incomplete, the Buckeyes had to punt the ball back. Getting the ball all the way at the 33, Florida State again marched to the red zone, this time reaching the 13 yard line. Chris Weinke tried hard, but three straight failed passes to Patrick Warrick saw the Noles AGAIN turn the ball over inside the Buckeyes 15! Again the Noles managed to get the ball back with 5 seconds left, but Weinke's deep pass fell just short of Ron Dugans and the Buckeyes drenched head coach John Cooper as they celebrated being the inaugural BCS champions! Ohio State 13 - Florida State 9 |

#1 Florida State vs. #16 Southern Miss In an abolute stunner, Southern Miss not only beat the Seminoles... they dominated. Chris Weinke was troubled all day long, especially by Terrence Parrish who picked him off a stunning 3 times. A 13-10 Golden Eagles lead helped quiet the home crowd and the 21-6 2nd half margin silenced them as the Eagles celebrated the biggest win in school history as coach Bowden will have to live with the distinction of being the first 1 seed to lose to a 16. A stunning result, and one that shows ANYTHING can happen in a tournament. Southern Miss 34 - Florida State 16 #8 Michigan vs. #9 Michigan State A chilly day at Ann Arbour saw these two rivals compete in a close game. Michigan State jumped to an early lead on a 2 yard run by T.J. Duckett and exchnages of field goals saw them hold onto the lead until the 3rd quarter. After a FG cut the lead to 1, QB Bill Burke threw a bad pick that swung momentum to the Wolverines who quickly capitalized on a Tom Brady TD pass. The teams would exchanges more field goals but one last INT (The 3rd for Burke) sealed the win for Michigan, who will be even more happy knowing they host Southern Miss instead of heading on the road to FSU. Michigan 19 - Michigan State 13 |

#5 Tennessee vs. #12 Marshall The Thundering Heard went up, down and anywhere else they wanted while stomping a hole at the 'Rocky Top' and blasting the Volunteers. Tee Martin had a miserable day, throwing 3 picks after being forced into a more offensive role thanks to the steady attack of Marshall. Chad Pennington was solid, but it was Doug Chapmans 85 yards and 2 TD's that helped add to the stomping. The win sees non-AQ's get their first victories and the first two upsets in round 1 history. Even more impressive is how strong it was, Marshall stopping the ground game and carving up the Volunteers on the road. This is a dangerous team. Marshall 34 - Tennessee 3 #4 Alabama vs. #13 Minnesota For 3 quarters, Minnesota could not be stopped. They shutdown the Crimson Tide's run attack and scored a respectable 20 points while giving up none themselves. Than, Bama's came to life. First Shaun Alexander broke off a huge 51 yard dash and 7 minutes later he added a 37 yard scamper to cut the lead to 1 score. Minnesota's offense was helpless and after a 4 minutes drive it was QB Andrew Zow who tossed a 4 yard pass to take the lead. Minnesota couldn't answer, instead suffering a frustrating 1 point loss. Alabama will feel very nervous for next week, even against the 'lower' team of the two they could face. Shaun Alexander showed a lot of skill though and he'll be trying to carry his team in the next round like he did in this huge comeback. Alabama 21 - Minnesota 20 |
