Let's see how long this lasts... >_>

In the middle of yet another sub .500 season, the Bobcats decided to make a drastic philosophical change in 2011 by dealing the face of their franchise, Gerald Wallace, to Portland. They continued their poor play, and finished under .500 for the 6th time in their 7 years of existence. Fundamental changes were needed. Charlotte added a new GM in Rich Cho, who helped to oversee reclamation projects both in Portland and Seattle/OKC.

Posted Image

Also in the offseason, the Bobcats traded away perhaps their second biggest name in Stephen Jackson to Milwaukee. It was clear during the draft that the Bobcats were on the move. The beginnings of the rebuilding process were in motion. The only thing left to do was draft the new face of the franchise. Then, with the 7th and 9th picks in the 2011 Draft, the Bobcats selected the simian-armed, energetic PF/C Bismack Biyombo out of the Congo and National Champion scorer-extraordinaire, Kemba Walker out of UCONN.

Posted Image

We set the scene at the start of the (non-shortened-due-to-lockout) 2011-2012 NBA season. How long will it take for Rich Cho to turn the Bobcats around like he did in Portland and OKC?

Rosters to follow.

NOTE: This isn't going to be a to be a typical composition. Not planning on doing monthly or weekly updates because that would kill me. Thinking about breaking the season into 4 roughly measured periods and doing it that way. Mostly simulation, as I'll be more focused on the front office aspects.

STARTING FIVE

Posted Image 71 OVR

DJ is a good, not great, point guard out of Texas. He has a nice stroke from three point territory and is a more than adequate passer. Some wondered how he and Kemba would coexist. The world is about to find out...

Posted Image 79 OVR

Kemba is a scorer, period. The rookie will be inserted into the lineup as our best player from Day 1. Because DJ has taken the main distributor role, Kemba's job will be to score at a feverish pace. Because of his shorter stature for a 2-guard, he will give up a lot of size to those he defends. Our combined guard speed will be a great asset in the fastbreak game, though.

Posted Image 73 OVR

Acquired in the Milwaukee trade, Maggette is an NBA veteran with a decent all around game. Again, his defense leaves a little to be desired (I'm sensing a theme here). His large contract number makes him a candidate to be moved near the deadline.

Posted Image 72 OVR

The oft-maligned former high lottery pick, Thomas landed in Charlotte with something to prove. He still has a lot to prove. Plagued by inconsistency at both ends of the court, Thomas has never been able to put it all together. He has the longest deal on the team at 4 years, 33 million. If a team were to be so kind as to take him off our hands, we would gladly accept.

Posted Image 55 OVR

B-SMACK BIYOMBOOOOO. The NBA might call this tanking, but have you seen Byron Mullens or Gana Diop? We have no better all-around options at center and the sky is the limit for the 18 year old Congo native. Hopefully he develops over the course of the season, but if not, he's still the best option on the team. Mullens will provide a scoring spark from the bench while Bismack develops.

Key Reserves

SG Gerald Henderson - 68 OVR
PF Boris Diaw('s 9 million dollar expiring contract) - 65 OVR
SF Derrick Brown - 64 OVR
SG Reggie Williams - 63 OVR
PF DJ White - 61 OVR
C Byron Mullens - 56 OVR

Wait... they've finished above .500 one year?

Oh, and there's a significant lack of Boris Diaw's boobs in this already.

Update - 12/13/11

Bobcats: 9-12/ 9.0 GB in the division (Miami Heat: 17-2) / 0.5 GB of the 8th seed (Philadelphia 76ers: 9-11)

Despite our wretched starting lineup and our piss-poor team chemistry (0%), we're currently less than a game out of the playoffs. Unfortunately for us, that means we're currently less than a game from losing a lottery pick. It does us no good to be a middling NBA team. Time to get busy winning or get busy losing.

BOBCATS LEADERS
PPG: Corey Maggette - 21 PPG
RPG: Tyrus Thomas - 7.1 RPG
APG: Kemba Walker - 3.9 APG
SPG: Tyrus Thomas - 1.9 SPG
BPG: Tyrus Thomas - 1.4 BPG
TOPG: Tyrus Thomas - 2.1 TOPG
MPG: Kemba Walker - 35 MPG

Tyrus has been a great defensive player for us, but then again, he does lead the team in turnovers. Hopefully his performance has cemented his value to potential trade partners. Kemba has been a decent scorer, as he is second on the team in scoring and leads in assists with the departure of DJ Augustin (see below).

Big news to report!

Posted Image
Looks like Xavier and Boris already have a history...

On December 9th, the Bobcats and Hornets finalized terms on a trade that would send PG DJ Augustin and a 2013 second round pick to New Orleans in exchange for PG Greivis Vasquez and SG Xavier Henry. It is unclear at this point how these two guys will fit into the Bobcats future plans. Both guys are on one year deals with 2 year options after the season. Perhaps the Bobcats will use the rest of the season as a tryout for these two as they enter an offseason with plenty of cap space and rumored big name FAs like Chris Paul and Dwight Howard potentially hitting the open market.

In an effort to get our five best players on the floor, Kemba will slide back to PG and Xavier will slide into the starting SG slot. Maggette, Thomas, and Biyombo round out the starting five... for now.

Update - 1/22/12

Bobcats: 12-29 / 20.0 GB in the division (Miami Heat: 31-8) / 7.0 GB of the 8th seed (Orlando Magic: 18-21)

That's more like it.

Our complete and utter lack of talent finally caught up with us. Since our last check-in, the team has gone 3-17 and plummeted to the worst record in the league. Thank god for Anthony Davis. Xavier Henry was benched after being a waste of a starting spot for Gerald Henderson, who was awful as well. Thinking long-term, I'd rather the team be here than fighting for the 8th seed. Hopefully the ping pong balls are kind to us come June.

BOBCATS LEADERS
PPG: Corey Maggette - 19.1 PPG
RPG: Tyrus Thomas - 7.2 RPG
APG: Kemba Walker - 4.8 APG
SPG: Kemba Walker - 1.5 SPG
BPG: Bismack Biyombo - 1.3 BPG
TOPG: Kemba Walker - 2.5 TOPG
MPG: Kemba Walker - 34 MPG

Tyrus has cooled off a bit, being passed in both of the major defensive glamour stat categories by the rookies. Maggette still leads the team in scoring but his average has fallen off a bit. Everyone's scoring has decreased substantially from the first quarter of the season. Might be a reason why we're losing so badly. Is there a light at the end of this tunnel? God, I hope so.

Desagana Diop on the Move
New Year, New Team for Gana Diop

Worst Free Throw Ever.
Hopefully we never have to live through this again

On New Year's Day, while everyone was hungover as hell, Rich Cho and company were busy, shipping off Desagana Diop's unhappy ass out of Charlotte. Charlotte sends Diop and their current second round pick to OKC for former lottery pick, Nick Collison. Almost immediately after joining the Cats, Collison went down with a sprained MCL. Either that, or he didn't want to put his uniform on. We'll never know. Also, Byron Mullens has become upset with the addition of a new big man, and he too, is requesting a trade.

As we near the trade deadline, look for Corey Maggette and Tyrus Thomas to be on the move, as well.

Update - 3/6/12

Bobcats: 18-43 / 28.5 GB in the division (Miami Heat: 45-13) / 11.0 GB of the 8th seed (New York Knicks: 29-32)

*Exasperated sigh*

We all knew what we were getting ourselves into, but this has been yet another rough quarter for us. The team has gone 6-14 since January. There has been some good news to report, though, as both Kemba Walker and Bismack Biyombo were selected to participate in the Rising Stars game at All Star Weekend. Neither player wowed anyone with their performances, but it's nice to be recognized for having a young team. Or something like that. Corey Maggette hurt himself (again) and with the trade deadline passing, we were unable to move him due to his injury. What an asshole. We're stuck with him at least until the offseason. At least he'll have some value as a contract that will expire in the following offseason.

BOBCATS LEADERS
PPG: Corey Maggette - 19.8 PPG
RPG: Kris Humphries - 9.0 RPG
APG: Kemba Walker - 4.6 APG
SPG: Kemba Walker - 1.4 SPG
BPG: Bismack Biyombo - 1.2 BPG
TOPG: Kemba Walker - 2.5 TOPG
MPG: Kemba Walker - 33.9 MPG

With the departure of Tyrus Thomas (see below), Kris Humphries has picked up the slack on the boards, corralling 9 a game. Kemba and Bismack's numbers have stayed the same, more or less. At least they're consistent!

Bobcats do the Hump De-Hump
Stevenson and Humphries move to Charlotte

Posted Image
Pictured: NOT DeShawn Stevenson and Kris Humphries

On February 23, the Bobcats sent their longest contract in Tyrus Thomas along with the unhappy Byron Mullens to New Jersey (THAT'LL SHOW HIM) in exchange for the White-People-Scaring SG DeShawn Stevenson, former Kardashian beau PF Kris Humphries, and a 2012 second round pick. Again, immediately after joining the team, Humphries was sidelined with an achilles injury. He's back, though, and the Bobcats are nearly at full strength.

After their recent trades, the Bobcats will have only 5 players on contract for next season, pending 1 player option and 3 team options. Those 5 players include 2 rookies, Kemba Walker and Bismack Biyombo, 2 role players in sharpshooter Reggie Williams and back-up big Nick Collison, and current scoring leader Corey Maggette. With several big names hitting the market this summer, we're hopeful we can snag an up-and-comer to pair with our other young talent.

For those keeping track at home, with just 21 games remaining, the Bobcats have a 1.5 game edge over the Wizards and Jazz for top spot in the lottery.

Update - 6/6/12

Bobcats: 29-53

The season is officially, mercifully over with. We finished with a terrible record, but luckily for us, we made it through a season without a revolt from our fans. Our roster was mostly a rotating door of guys with expiring contracts unhappy about their playing time. We now only have 5 guys on our roster, pending a few options. We'll make some of those moves when the time comes. For now, it's time to check in on final stats and season awards.

BOBCATS LEADERS
PPG: Corey Maggette - 19.4 PPG
RPG: Kris Humphries - 9.5 RPG
APG: Kemba Walker - 4.7 APG
SPG: Kemba Walker - 1.4 SPG
BPG: Bismack Biyombo - 1.2 BPG
TOPG: Kemba Walker - 2.7 TOPG
MPG: Kemba Walker - 34.3 MPG

It's becoming increasingly clear that this team will go only as far as Kemba carries it. Kemba led all rookies with 18 PPG and came in third both in Assists (5 APG) and Steals (1 APG). He was named to the All Rookie First Team and was named 2011 Rookie of the Year. We are very happy for him, and we can't wait until he has some more talented teammates to share responsibilities with.

Congratulations, Kemba!

Playoff Roundup

The surprising Nuggets met the aging Lakers in the Western Conference Finals where Kobe was able to will his team to victory, scoring over 30 points every game in the 6 game series, three times going over 40. LeBron and company were able to repeat as Eastern Conference Champions in a rematch of last year's Eastern Conference Finals against the Bulls, 4-1.

Posted Image vs. Posted Image

David Stern must have been salivating to see the Lakers and the Heat in the NBA Finals for ratings' sake. Miami started the series at home, winning both contests at AmericanAirlines Arena. When the series shifted west, LA exacted revenge in the form of a 43 point shellacking. Miami fought back to a 3-1 series lead with a 23 point victory at the Staples Center. The Lakers took game five to send the series back to Miami. LeBron proved to be too much for the Lakers. In game 6, Lebron paced the Heat with his 30 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals, and 1 block. The Heat defense smothered the Lakers into a 9 point fourth quarter to clinch the title.

Draft Lottery

After losing a tiebreaker in the last week, we came into the lottery with the second overall slot, just under 20% chance of getting the first pick.

When the ping-pong balls fell, the basketball gods did not smile upon Charlotte. We fell from second overall to 4th, behind the catapulting Detroit Pistons who got the first pick. We'll still get great talent at 4, but we were hoping to have our pick of everyone. Now, we'll have to be a bit more creative.

Top Prospects

Our scouts have been hard at work, and they've come up with a big board with these 5 guys at the top.

1) Harrison Barnes / SF / UNC

Our scouts like his ability to contribute both now and his potential to be a perennial all-star later in his career. His main weakness is his low-post defense, which is a result of his wiry frame.

2) Jared Sullinger / PF / Ohio State

Our scouts haven't done much work on Sullinger, but they like his low post offense and rebounding abilities. The problem at this level is going to be his height. He might be overpowered by some of the bigger PFs in the league.

3) Perry Jones / PF? / Baylor

Scouts love his size and potential, but are scared by his low-post defense. He has had a tendency to check into and out of games, and his commitment is a legitimate concern.

4) Michael Kidd-Gilchrist / SF / Kentucky

His potential is his main tool, but scouts like his all-around game. They do worry about his focus in passing situations and that he tries to do too much at times.

5) Anthony Davis / PF / Kentucky

My favorite of these five players, I can only hope that he's still on the board when we pick. His rebounding and defense are immediate assets for our team, and our scouts project him to be one of the best players in the NBA. The only worry is his range on his jumpshot, and that's not a even a big deal for a PF.

Player and Team Options

Matt Carroll's useless ass decided to keep us on the hook for his 3.5 Million dollar player option. Glad he'll be gone after this year.

The team decided to keep Greivis Vasquez to be a backup both at PG and SG for 1.19 Million.

SG Gerald Henderson was extended one more year with the team option for 3.10 Million.

Charlotte officially ended the Xavier Henry experiment when they decided to let him walk, instead of paying his 2.32 million dollar option.

The team extended a 3 million dollar qualifying offer to back up PF DJ White.

We decided not to negotiate with any of our free agents this year. That means no more Boris, sorry MSC.

Posted Image
Get the fuck out. Don't even grab a bagel.

Predraft, our roster looks something like this:

PG: Kemba Walker - 80 OVR
SF: Corey Maggette - 71 OVR
SG: Gerald Henderson - 71 OVR
PG: Greivis Vasquez - 69 OVR
SF: Reggie Williams - 67 OVR
C: Bismack Biyombo - 61 OVR
PF: Nick Collison - 59 OVR
SG: Matt Carroll - 53 OVR

Obviously we have a lot of holes to fill in the draft and free agency. We currently have 2 picks and just under 30 million in cap space. We can afford one max contract and can move to sign some role players with the rest of our money.

North Carolina native Chris Paul opted for free agency this year...

You never know.

See you next time with a draft and FA update.

Draft Recap

We were extremely fortunate to pick up two great players in this year's draft. I couldn't be more pleased with Rich Cho if I tried to be. First, we stood tall at 4 and were able to pick up our favorite player in the draft in perpetually-surprised-looking PF Anthony Davis.

Posted Image

Then, with the talented Terrence Jones falling, Rich dealt Corey Maggette and Greivis Vasquez to Milwaukee to pick up another top 10 pick. Unfortunately, the target did not fall all the way to 9 where we were able to move up, but we were still able to shed Maggette's price tag.

No matter, our talented GM got on the phones and talked Utah into taking the 9th overall pick and our second round pick (40th overall) for their first round selection, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, the better SF out of Kentucky.

Still teammates

We are elated to add a pair of extremely talented Wildcats into the mix, and can't wait to see what they're capable of when they get on the court with Kemba and Biz.

FREE AGENCY

Free agency started out moving so.fucking.slowly. But we announced our presence with a bang when...

Posted Image

NC native, PG Chris Paul came home, signing a 5 year, 98 Million dollar deal.

After this move, it's expected that Rookie of the Year Kemba Walker will slide back to SG, where he started last season. He was elated to hear that the Bobcats were bringing in a player of CP3's caliber. Unfortunately we didn't have enough money for another max contract, we signed a bunch of role players to one-year deals in hopes that we can try again next offseason or deal some expiring contracts for someone closer to the deadline. We filled out our roster with:

Backup big, Kris Humphries 1 year, 3.77 million
Backup guard, Goran Dragic 1 year min
PF DJ White 1 year 3 million
C Sheldon Williams 1 year min

We currently have about 10.5 million in cap flexibility. We are in good position with a good young core, lots of expiring deals, and cap space.

Now we have to turn the corner on the court. We'll see how the team fares in the 2012-13 season...
