1971 Recap - Unbeatable Mets Win 4th Straight Championship This is becoming a recurring theme, but the New York Mets have won another World Series. They defeated the AL Champion Chicago White Sox in 5 games. Don Sutton took his 6th straight Cy Young award, and Reggie Jackson finally won his first MVP award, hitting .342 with 51 HR and 180 RBI. If it weren't for Rod Carew flirting with .400 all season, Bobby Pfeil would have rebounded so nicely to win the NL Batting Title. As it is, Pfeil hit .357 with 6 HR and 91 RBI. Carew won the batting title with a .388 average, while hitting 8 HR with 100 RBI. In mid-season, left fielder Boog Powell was traded to the Washington Senators in exchange for Doyle Alexander. Powell approved the deal after changing his list of teams he would approve a deal to. Alexander would sign a 7 year extension at $125,000. With Alexander in the rotation and Charlie Hough becoming an unexpected star, having gone 16-1 with a 2.82 ERA in 1971, it is believed that Nolan Ryan could be the odd man out in the Mets' rotation. However, Ryan has a hefty contract (300k a year until 1975), and a limited no-trade clause. No deals have come up that would be interesting to the Mets, so it looks like the Ryan Express will be staying at Shea Stadium for the time being. |

1972 Preview - The Ryan Express Has Left the Station During Spring Training, the New York Mets finalized a deal that sent Nolan Ryan to the Milwaukee Brewers as well as Santiago Guzman and a minor leaguer. The Mets got back 4 solid minor league prospects, and this was seen as a move to shore up the minor leagues and improve their farm system. They have made the commitment to move forward with Doyle Alexander and Charlie Hough as their #3 and #4 starters. Meanwhile in the field, Tommie Agee is facing more and more competition from youngster George Kendrick in Center Field. Hendrick has proven he could hit a curveball and projects to be as good as Agee, and with Agee coming off an injury-plagued season, it could be time for Hendrick to take over. Lineup 1. Jackson Becomes New Single Season Home Run King in 8-1 Rout of Cubs! Remember the date: September 26, 1972. Reggie Jackson became the new single-season home run leader after he hit his 62nd Home Run of the season in an 8-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. As he made his trip around the bases, Jackson basked in the cheers of a crowd of 37,741 as they showed their respect to the new single season Home Run king. "I would have loved to do this at home, but this is a culmination of my hard work and I'm honored to have hit more home runs in a single season than Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, and Roger Maris. It's been a great season and I think we've got another title in us" Jackson said in a rare post-game press conference. Posted Image ALL HAIL THE KING! |

1972 Recap - The King of Home Runs Leads The Kings of Baseball as Mets Win 5th Straight Championship A lot of people thought the trade of Tommie Agee to San Diego for a bunch of prospects would ruin team chemistry. Well, they were wrong. Dead wrong. Reggie Jackson made sure they were wrong. Jackson hit .297 with a single-season record 63 HR's and 159 RBI, and has set himself up to potentially be the first million dollar player in the majors ahead of Hank Aaron and Don Sutton, but Aaron's contract expires at the end of the year. Jackson's contract expires next season. Journalists are wondering if this is the year that someone wrestles the Cy Young award away from Don Sutton. Their best hope would be Tom Seaver, the National League wins leader. Seaver went 30-3 with a 2.17 ERA. In the past two seasons, Seaver has gone 63-7. "Tom Terrific" would probably have 4 or 5 Cy Young awards right now if it weren't for his teammate Don Sutton. Speaking of Sutton, he went 25-5 with a league-leading 1.99 ERA, but it was his lowest win total since 1967 when he "only" won 23 games. The offseason began with a big bang. Fan favorite 2nd baseman Ron Hunt was traded along with prospects to the Kansas City Royals in exchange for top prospect George Brett and an assortment of low-level minor leaguers. Hunt was disappointed at being traded, but was looking forward to a new start in Kansas City. This is another move that could potentially damage the chemistry in the clubhouse, as Ron Hunt was well-liked by both players and fans alike. |

1973 Review - Gee, Take a Wild Guess! I don't think we need to even discuss who won. You know who won by now :P Spoiler: It wasn't anyone else. Don Sutton continues to see how low one can get their ERA in one season. He went 28-5 with a stunning 1.29 ERA, just short of the top 10 for single-season ERA. He now stands 7th in career ERA, with a career ERA of 2.13. Rod Carew won his 5th National League batting title as he hit .343 with 13 HR and 92 RBI. Reggie Jackson will probably win his 3rd straight MVP award. He hit .297 with 59 HR and 159 RBI, nobody could even approach him in power numbers. The team said goodbye to Bobby Pfeil, releasing him at the end of the World Series. Pfeil has had injury issues as of late and the likes of George Brett and Pete LaCock have been rising through the system and have become better than Pfeil. They paid him a $275,000 buyout to release him. He is expected to find a home relatively quickly as there will be a team who can use the bat of a career .306 hitter. |
