1995-1996 Season

-Glen Rice would make an immediate impact after joining the Hornets, leading the team in scoring and points-per-game during the 1995–96 season. While Rice and Larry Johnson provided high-powered scoring, Matt Geiger tied with Johnson for the team lead in rebounds, and All-Star guard Kenny Anderson ran the point for the injured Muggsy Bogues. The Hornets were competitive, but failed to qualify for the playoffs during the season, again finishing with a 41–41 record. Head Coach Allan Bristow resigned at the end of the season, and was replaced by NBA legend Dave Cowens.

The 1996 Off Season

-Big changes were in store for the Charlotte Hornets after failing to make the playoffs. Perhaps the 'face' of the Hornets franchise had been Larry Johnson - well Johnson was shipped off to the Knicks in exchange for PF Anthony Mason.

-All Star guard Kenny Anderson chose NOT to resign with the Charlotte Hornets.

Posted Image

-With two big stars gone - the Hornets were going to have to use their draft pick wisely. They decided to take a chance on a young 18 year old straight out of high school with their 13th overall pick - Kobe Bryant.

So what will the future hold for this new look Hornets? There's still a lot to be done in this off season before games can be played. The Hornets will most likely be looking to get younger and rebuild after missing the playoffs last year. Could we see Glen Rice shipped out before all is said and done?

As it stands, this team definitely is going to need some help defensively. Muggsy can still perform well at PG. At SG and SF, Dell Curry and Glen Rice should put up good numbers offensively, but they're not going to be known for their defense. Meanwhile the newly acquired Anthony Mason leaves a lot to be desired on the boards and on defense. Drafted rookie Kobe Bryant at this point will be getting a few minutes off the bench at best.

Look for Dell Curry and Glen Rice to be on the block this off season.

You should trade that Kobe Bryant kid for Vlade Divac.

What? Oh, that happened already?

Free Agency

-Despite all the change ups with Kenny Anderson leaving, the Hornets do not find themselves with cap space going into Free Agency - making it all the more difficult to finish filling out their line up. We're going to be stuck using our exceptions and minimum contracts to fill the team.

Time to see what we can pull together.

*Noteable Signings from around the league*

Day 1
PG Sam Cassel signs with the Mavericks for 4 years, 21.3 million

Day 2
C Shawn Bradley signs with the Pistons for 6 years, 72.4 million
C Clifford Rozier signs with the Pistons for 4 years, 19.8 million

Day 3
PF Chris Gattling signs with the Mavericks for 6 years, 65.6 million
SF Michael Finley signs with the Suns for 4 years, 28 million

Day 4
SG Jason Kidd signs with the Timberwolves for 4 years, 28.2 million
PG Kenny Smith signs with the Hornets for 1 year, .97 million
C Oliver Miller signs with the Cavaliers for 2 years, 2.9 million
SF Jim Jackson signs with the Trailblazers for 4 years, 26.7 million
SF George McCloud signs with the Hornets for the MLE
SF Cedric Cebellos signs with the Mavs for 4 years, 19.9 million
SF Scott Burrell signs with the Nets for 2 years, 4.6 million

Day 5
PG Mark Jackson signs with the Mavericks for 3 years, 9.4 million

Well, we certainly didn't get the guys we wanted in Free Agency...but with us looking to rebuild this season, this free agency ultimately was more about fielding a 12 man team than finding the best talent. Before training camps, look for the Hornets to make some moves to free up some money for next off season as well while also trying to get younger.

Days 1-30

A bit surprised to see the Hornets doing as well as they are with this line up. The 11-9 start is even WITH Glen Rice going down on Day 13 with a fractured arm. As you'll see in the stats below - Rice is quite the prolific scorer - but even in his absence - the Hornets continue to win more than they lose. Hornets are proving to have an underestimated offense, having the 4th highest PPG average at 95.9 PPG while also leading the league in FG %.

To be expected, our defense is definitely suspect, allowing the third worse FG% allowed in the league.

One thing's for sure...we need to make some moves. But the question is...do we make moves to make ourselves better NOW, or go with the original plan of rebuilding.

Hmm....

Saying Glen Rice is carrying the team would be an understatement.

I'd also say try to move Rice for a good pick or 2 somewhere. Duncan, Tracy McGrady, Billups all in the draft next year.

After Day 30, we went on the move to clear up contracts and try to acquire some additional 1st round picks for the upcoming draft. We wanted to dump Rice, Curry, and Mason's contracts to do that.

Finding a buyer for an all star Glen Rice wasn't as easy as you might expect - but we were finally able to work out a deal with the Denver Nuggets to send Rice and SF Rafael Anderson along with a [future 1st and 2nd in exchange for C Ervin Johnson and their 1997 1st round draft pick. Not only does that free up moeny for free agency, but gives us another expiring in Ervin Johnson as well as a pick.

The next piece we wanted to get rid of was Dell Curry's contract. After struggling again to find suitors, we packed him up and sent him off to the Houston Rockets along with our 97 and 98 2nd round picks for the Rockets 1997 1st and the expiring contract of PG Mario Elie.

The final piece to this puzzle was moving Anthony Davis' horrid contract. We were unable to talk any teams into giving us any type of pick for the PF, so we settled for a straight salary dump as we sent him to the Detroit Pistons for PF Otis Thorpe and PG Litterial Green.

So at the All Star Break, our team continues to win more than they probably should...but we're on the verge of falling out of the playoffs - which will mean only good things for our draft pick. Meanwhile, the Rockets and Nuggets have helped our cause by falling off a bit as well. Rockets have gone from top of the West to midpack while Nuggets look to be a solid lottery pick.

As for all star weekend...

Kobe Bryant was selected to the rookie team and scored 4 points to go along with 4 rebounds.

C Arvydas Sabonis of the Trailblazers was the Rookie game MVP.
SF Walt Williams of the Raptors won the 3 point shooting contest.
Michael Jordan of the Chicago Bulls won the Dunk Contest.
SG Clyde Drexler of the Houston Rockets on the MVP of the All Star game.

As the trade deadline approached - the Hornets decided to see if they could get anything out of Ervin Johnson. They found a buyer in the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Hornets send Ervin Johnson to them in exchange for Mark West, their first, and their second for this year.

That will give the Hornets 2 lottery picks in the upcoming draft as well as two other firsts. We'll most likely try to package some picks together to move up as well.

So we end up still just barely missing the playoffs...but it still gets us a nice lottery pick and who knows what will happen from there.

PLAYOFFS

Cleveland Cavaliers defeat Los Angeles Lakers in 6 games.

That hurts that 1st round pick we got earlier, but an upset in the first round by the Supersonics gave the Rockets an early exit that will in turn give us a higher pick than what we could have got for that Rockets pick.

THE OFF SEASON

Everyone that was up for contrat renewel either decided to test free agency OR the Hornets chose to not resign. That left us with a roster consisting of Kobe Bryant and Malik Rose. Woo!

DRAFT LOTTERY

Going into the lottery, we had the 5th best chance of getting the number one pick....and once it was all said and done...we ended up in the 2nd pick.

Here's the breakdown of the lottery:

1. New York Knicks
2. Charlotte Hornets (from Nuggets)
3. Vancouver Grizzlies
4. Dallas Mavericks
5. Milwuakee Bucks
6. San Antonio Spurs
7. Sacramento Kings
8. Toronto Raptors
9. Boston Celtics
10. Los Angeles Clippers
11. Philadelphia 76ers
12. Charlotte Hornets
13. Indiana Pacers

The Hornets, having their eyes set on C Tim Duncan out of Wake Forest and what a huge name from a college in NC could do for not just their ticket sales...but also for their team, since Duncan definitely seems to be most NBA ready of anyone in this draft.

Knowing they could not take any chances of the Knicks getting their hands on the big man, the Hornets quickly offered the number 2 pick and the Cavs 1st round pick for the number one overall. The Knicks accepted, switching spots with the Hornets and allowing the Charlotte Hornets to announce that they select PF TIM DUNCAN with the first pick of the 1997 NBA Draft!

With the second pick, the Knicks ended up going with perhaps the 2nd best big man in the draft, Zyndrunas Ilgauskas.

Grizzlies took yet another big man, C Chris Anstey with the third pick.

Young high school prospect Tracy McGrady went 4th to the Dallas Mavericks.

SF Louis Gulick, PG Bobby Jackson, SG Chauncy Billups, PF Peter Storm, SG Derek Anderson, PF Maurice Taylor, SG Jose Hoiberg rounded up the rest of the draft until we get to the next Hornets pick at 12.

The 12th overall pick was not as easy as the first obviously...there were a couple options available to us. There was PF Tony Battie that could provide some more big man depth, but given what I had to work with so far, we should probably look to back court. Would've loved to see Chauncey Billups fall to us, but it didn't work out that way. With very little talent to work with, the Hornets ended up picking PG Brevin Knight out of Stanford. His handling and defensive skills are already huge pluses...we'll just need to work on his offense.

With our third 1st round pick, the Hornets had even less to chose from. But since he was one of the people we were looking at all the way back at 12...since he was still available at 24, we decided to go with PF Tony Battie from Texas Tech.

To finish off our draft, the Hornets selected SG Xavier Stith from Northern Arizona.

So that's a wrap on the 1997 NBA Draft. Here's how the Hornets look before going into Free Agency with 33.4 million to spend.

Free Agency Day 1
-C Chris Webber to the Charlotte Hornets for 6 years, 80 million

The Hornets had their eyes on this guy almost right away as free agency opened. While everyone else futiley tried to lure Michael Jordan away from the Bulls or Terrelle Brandon away from the Cavaliers - the Hornets snuck in and offered Webber a chance to get out of Washington...he seemed pretty eager to do so.

-C Eric Montross signs with the Charlotte Hornets for 2 years, 2 million

UNC alumn Eric Montross will provide some more decent depth up front. Now we just need to work on the other positions.

Free Agency Day 2
-No signings for the Hornets.

Free Agency Day 3
-SG Malik Sealy signs with the Charlotte Hornets for 4 years, 34.6 million

Sealy leaves the Clippers to join the Hornets - Sealy has a nice outside touch to go along with his good defense. Will be the probable starter.

Free agency Day 4
-PG David Weasley signs with the Charlotte Hornets for 4 years, 31 million.

Weasley was our number two target in this Free Agency - took a little bit longer to get him, but he's the PG we wanted leading this team.

Free Agency Day 5
-Attempts to bring back SF George McCloud were halted by the Washington Bullets. Perhaps some payback for Chris Webber? I think we'll get over that 'trade off' pretty quickly Washington.

-We also had our eyes on SF Byron Russell but found ourselves outbid by the New York Knicks at the last minute on Day 5.

-In the end, we sign two PG's to add some depth in the back court PG John Starks and PG Terry Porter.

The biggest drawback of this free agency was our inability to secure a Small Forward...so we'll be banking on a good training camp from Kobe Bryant or looking to the trade market after Training Camps.

Trianing camps did not go in our favor...very little positive change and quite a few negative changes...though mostly a lot of no change. Wesley and Webber went up (though Webber's downgrade to F potential is a bit startling) - while Kobe shows slow progress going up a little in handling and inside.

Not sure what this year will bring, especially with Malik also losing some of his outside touch. We'll definitely be solid downlow with Webber and Duncan and Wesley looks ready to become a top PG in the league...but the other two wing positions are big question marks at this point.
