Posted Image The Hornets get out to a decent start to the season - C Tim Duncan is already a beast down low for the Hornets, scoring over 20 a game as part of his averaged double - double and almost 2 blocks a game. With the amount of big men we have, we slid Chris Webber to SF and that has really allowed us to dominate the paint. Webber is leading the team in scoring and definitely looks to have a big year. But we're not sure if he's a fit with what we want here in Charlotte...he could be moved before the All Star Break. As expected, it's pretty much a 3 man team with David Wesley being the third head of our offense. Malik Sealy is a huge disappointment after getting a nice sized contract after having a breakout year last year with the Clippers - he has crashed back down to Earth as a part of the Hornets. Meanwhile, other rookie Tony Battie has not been anything spectacular at starting PF, but is holding his own in his rookie year - meanwhile our other top selection Brevin Knight is struggling to find playing time. Posted Image Chris Webber's stay in Charlotte was short as he was traded to the Orlando Magic for Anfernee Hardaway. The official deal was Webber, Sealy, and the Hornets 98 1st for Hardaway, Don McLean, and Danny Schayes. This trade did two things...one - it gave us a star on the wing. With Duncan proving to be a beast in the paint - the need for both Webber and Duncan proved to be minimal, especially when we needed a lot of help on the wing. It also allowed us to get rid of Sealy after that blunder of a FA signing. We lose our first, but judging by how thing's have been so far this season - we plan on being a playoff team. But we weren't done yet. We had one more move up our sleaves. Remember how we had our eye on Chauncey Billups in the draft but he didn't fall to us? Well, we entered negotiations with the Sacramento Kings for that rookie. The Kings in turn were interested in young PG Brevin Knight and Malik Rose. Apparently they felt they had a lot of potential to be great. The Kings accepted a deal that sent Knight and Rose to the Kings for Billups, Brian Grant, and their 1998 1st round pick. So in the end we grab ourselves a probable lottery pick for this coming draft...not a bad haul. Just a few days after acquiring Billups, the rookie went down with a bulging disc and would be out 51 days. With the rookie down, the Hornets have continued to play well and currently find themselves in the 4 seed in the East, just 2 games back of the cofnerence leading New Jersey Nets. Posted Image With the addition of Penny Hardaway to the team, the Hornets continue to be a consistent team for the rest of the season. We were as high as a 3 seed at portions during the later half of the season, but slowed down near the end as the Chicago Bulls finished hot to take the 3 seed back. Posted Image THE 1997 PLAYOFFS -The Hornets were matched up in round 1 against the defending NBA Champions the Cleveland Cavaliers. After taking a 2-0 series lead, we went on the road and proceeded to lose 2 in a row as the Cavs evened up the series. Back at home, we took the lead again with a victory. However, the Cavs forced a game 7 by beating us in Cleveland the next game. In game 7, Tim Duncan went down with an injury but the Hornets still managed to win game 7 to advance to the next round. -In Round 2, the Hornets squared off against conference leading New Jersey Nets who struggled against the 8 seed Boston Celtics in the opening round. The Hornets were without Tim Duncan for the first game, but still snuck out a victory on the road. The Nets won the second game of the series - but when we came back to Charlotte, we took both games to be up 3-1 heading back to New Jersey. New Jersey got the victory as needed at home and we lost Afernee Hardaway to a dislocated shoulder. With Penny, the Hornets still got the victory at home to win the series in 6! -Without Penny, the Hornets had their backs against the wall in the Eastern Conference finals as they faced off against the mighty Chicago Bulls. The Bulls made short work of the Hornets - sweeping us 4-0. -The NBA Finals was a dream matchup of the Bulls with Jordan vs.The Lakers with Shaq. Bulls had the homecourt advantage, but the Lakers made it a competitive series, but would ultimately lose in 6 games to the Bulls. Michael Jordan was named Playoff MVP. |

OFF SEASON -Don Maclean and Brian Grant both wanted to resign, but the Hornets did not like the contracts they wanted - so they have become free agents. DRAFT LOTTERY -By having the Kings 1998 1st, the Hornets have the SECOND best chance of winning the lottery. And here comes the lotto balls. 13. Washington Bullets 12. Indiana Pacers 11. Milwuakee Bucks 10. Miami Heat 9. Denver Nuggets 8. Atlanta Hawks 7. Vancouver Grizzlies 6. Golden State Warriors 5. Philadelphia 76ers 4. Los Angeles Clippers 3. Orlando Magic 2. Charlotte Hornets (from Kings) 1. San Antonio Spurs Well, we didn't get the top spot, but we didn't fall (unlike the Magic who went from 1 to 3.). So for the second straight year, the Hornets find themselves with the 2nd overall pick. The 1998 NBA DRAFT -With the 1st pick of the NBA Draft, the San Antonio Spurs selected C Michael Olowokandi from Pacific. -With the 2nd pick of the NBA draft, the Charlotte Hornets selected SF Paul Pierce from Kansas -With the 3rd pick of the NBA draft, the Orlando Magic selected SF vince Carter from North Carolina. -With the 4th pick of the NBA draft, the Los Angeles Clippers selected PF Pedrag Stojakovic from Yogoslavia -With the 5th pick of the NBA draft, the Philadelphia 76ers selected SG Mathew Blood from Tennessee-Martin. -With the 6th pick of the NBA draft, the Golden State Warriors selected C Brad Miller from Purdue. -With the 7th pick of the NBA draft, the Vancouver Grizzlies selected SG Tyrone Nesby from UNLV. -With the 8th pick of the NBA draft, the Atlanta Hawks selected PF Raef Lafrentz from Kansas. -With the 9th pick of the NBA draft, the Denver Nuggets selected PG Jason Williams from Florida. -With the 10th pick of the NBA draft, the Miami Heat selected SF Antawn Jamison from North Carolina. -With the 11th pick of the NBA draft, the Milwuakee Bucks selected PG Mike Bibby from Arizona. -With the 12th pick of the NBA draft, the Indiana Pacers selected PG Damon Jones from Houston. -With the 13th pick of the NBA draft, the Washington Bullets selected C Dirk Nowitzki from Germany. There's a recap of the lottery....Paul Pierce looked to be the most NBA ready player right now in the draft, so we were happy to see the Spurs went big instead of going with Pierce. Posted Image |

FREE AGENCY *Only noteable signings will be mentioned Day 1 -Grant Hill leaves Detroit for Los Angeles as he signs with the Clippers for 6 years, 82.1 million Nothing for the Hornets on Day 1. Day 2 -Glenn Robinson returns to the Milwuakee Bucks for 7 years, 81.6 million -Kenny Anderson leaves Portland to head to the Washington Bullets for 6 years, 73.3 million -Glen Rice stays with the Denver Nuggets for 6 years, 71.4 million -The Los Angeles Lakers hold onto Eddie Jones for another 5 years worth 42.3 million No one is biting on the Hornets' offers just yet. Day 3 -Brian Grant returns to the Charlotte Hornets for 2 years, 4.2 million -Lamond Murray decides to take his services from the Clippers and head to San Antonio to join the Spurs for 6 years, 65.6 million Hornets will probably remain pretty quiet in FA with only a few roster spots to fill. They use up their little bit of cap to resign backup PF Brian Grant on Day 3. Day 4 -Loy Vaught signs a MLE with the Charlotte Hornets -Donyell Marshall signs a 4 year, 21.2 million contract with the New Jersey Nets - saying goodbye to Golden State. Loy will add some depth to our big man rotation...he's averaged 17 ppg the past two seasons, one with Atlanta and one with Portland. Day 5 -Elliot Perry signs with the Charlotte Hornets for 2 years, 1.6 million Just some added depth at the guard position on a 2 year min contract. By day 5, all the big names have been signed up so nothing else noteable to report! So here's how the line up looks PRE-TRAINING CAMPS. Posted Image And now let's cross our fingers... We'll look first at our rookie Paul Pierce who luckily doesn't appear to have that F potential he was scouted as. He immediately become the best defender we have. Kobe Bryant continues to develop slowly as he apparently is crafting his defensive game before his offensive game. Penny Hardaway also improves his game some this off season which will only mean good things for the Hornets this season. Chauncey Billups appears to be slipping away from the PG route with his handling falling but his defense going up. At this rate he will probably end up being more suited as a SG in the league. With this line up, he'll probably be coming off the bench as a 6th man. David Weasley disappointed this TC by going down in handling...it's unfortunate to see, but he's still a great defender and will be looked to to run the offense. Posted Image |

Posted Image 1998 Season -At the All Star Break, the Hornets have been having another good season and have won in spite of some injuries along the way to Tim Duncan, Loy Vaught, and Chauncey Billups. We still find ourselves looking up at the Chicago Bulls as usual. But we're just one game back, so there's still room to take down the Jordan Empire. On the bright side, Jordan's days have to be numbered at this point. At 35, he should be looking at retirement (again) in the next couple seasons. Until then, the Bulls will continue to be our biggest competition. Duncan continus to be a force in the pain, once again averaging a double-double - though 3 turnovers a game is unsettling. Penny is having a good seasons as well. Loy Vaught took the starting spot from Tony Battie and posts a near double-double as well at PF while Tony Battie puts up good numbers off the bench. Rookie Paul Pierce has struggled thus far with just 42% FG shooting, but his defense makes him an effective starter nonetheless. Chauncey Billups has also been a nice asset off the bench. Posted Image 1998 End of Regular Season The Hornets continue to have success for the remainder of the season - trading the Eastern Conference lead back and forth with the Chicago Bulls. It looked like the Hornets were going to have a lock on the top seed, but the Bulls surged at the end - winning 11 straight to retake the lead and take the 1 seed by 1 game. So the Hornets settle for the 3 seed. Posted Image Penny Hardaway wraps up a great season by earning 2nd team All NBA honors.
