Dwight Howard and Derrick Rose's injuries are devastating. Already the Magic are gone and the Bulls are on the brink of elimination. Without their respective star players, it's clear how both are effected. But what if the league ALL suffered this fate? What about the Lakers without Kobe, the Knicks without Melo? The Heat with LeBron? Using WhatIfSports, I will re-sim the 2012 playoffs without each teams best players. Who will step up and lead their team to post-season glory, and who willc rumble under the pressure of losing their stars? as a compromise, teams with players out for injuries now can have them back so every team is fully healthy except for their personal MVP. --- Chicago Bulls - They will lose (Or keep lost) Derrick Rose. An obvious choice for best player, but can they make a run in the depleted playoffs without him? Philadelphia 76ers - Andre Iguodala gets the nod. The All-Star of a good depth team, Philly migh tbe a good pick to gain a lot from this scenario. Can they capitalize though? Boston Celtics - The C's will lose Rajon Rondo whose coming off a career year and is argued as the best PG in the league. Without their man at the point it's back to the 'original' big 3. Can they make a run? Atlanta Hawks - It was tough to pick between Josh Smith and Joe Johnson, but I ultimately decided on JJ. The good news is that Horford (And all injuries) will be ignored as a compromise and the Hawks good depth could see them be a tough out for most teams. Miami Heat - The King is dead. Can the duo of Wade/Bosh get the Heat to the finals or win a ring without him? New York Knicks - While a healthy Amare will help, the Knicks will be looking similar to their pre-trade appearence without Melo. They'll be hoping for good results like those times here. Indiana Pacers - The Pacers lose the face of their franchise in Danny Granger, but have a good group of players in DWest, Collison, paul george and more. Orlando Magic - Not much different from how they are now. The Magic will not have Dwight Howard. San Antonio Spurs - Without TP9 at the point, can the 50 win Spurs hang around? One would have to guess they'll still be tough even without their veteran PG. Utah Jazz - Utah loses Al-Jeff, but still have some good depth and will hope to benefit from a TP9less Spurs team. The Jazz still have some good front court pieces and will now hold an advantage at the point. Is it enough for na upset though? Memphis Grizzlies - Memphis will, once again, have a post-season without Rudy gay. last year they upset the Spurs and hung with OKC. With a depleted West can they get even further this year? LA Clippers - It was tough to split between Balke and CP3, both easily arguable points for team MVP. I settled on CP3, but the Clippers still might be toruble. Chauncey Billups gets to cover for him here and the Clippers still have Blake up front which is a lot for most teams to handle. OKC Thunder - KD is out. It's really rough, but the THunder still have a star iN Westbrook and his supporting cast is nothing to sniff at. Dallas Mavericks - Dallas without Dirk is a mess. It'd be surprising to see them win, but a KDless OKC is certianly capable of being upset. LA Lakers - The Lakers lose future HOFer Kobe. It's obviously a big blow, but Pau and Bynum make up a formidable front court and with increased shots could surprise some people. Denver Nuggets - Ty Lawson is the 'star' of a incredibly balanced team. If anyone can benefit from this scenario to make a deep run, it's Denver. Losing one player effects them less than arguably any other team and they'll look to benefit from that fact. |
