I sadly never watched the show, but I really liked the movie a lot. I should probably give this one a go.

Notable episodes

"Day 1: 11:00 pm - 12:00 am" (Season 1, Episode 24)

Posted Image

Analysis: Given the format of 24, there's so much happening in each episode - it's hard to pick out three that stand out as the most important episodes. The season finale of the first season of 24 was important as it wrapped up the events that had unfolded during the previous 24 hours in the life of our hero Jack Bauer. 24 was considered an experiment when it debuted, and while it turned out to be a very successful show, Fox had not even decided if they would renew it for a second season until around the time there was 5 episodes left. This finale still exists as one of the most pivotal episodes in the entire series, as not only do we get the action packed finale of Jack getting his revenge on Victor Drazen, it was revealed that one of Jack's closest friends Nina Myers was the spy within CTU and set her up as an on-going villain in the show while also ending with Nina's murder of Jack's wife in a heart-wrenching final scene.

"Day 5: 7:00 am - 8:00 am" (Season 5, Episode 1)

Posted Image

Analysis: Season 5 is considered by most 24-fans to be the best season of the hit show, and the season literally started off with several twists and turns that would set up not just this season - but future seasons. Two major characters from previous seasons were killed off during this season 5 premiere (with a previously presumed dead Jack Bauer being framed for their murders), one of which would ultimately turn long time protagonist Tony Almeida into a major 24 villain. This emotional episode is probably one of the most shocking premieres, if not episodes, I've seen on TV.

"Day 5: 10:00 pm - 11:00 pm" (Season 5, Episode 16)

Posted Image

Analysis: Setting the stage for the final act of season 5, this episode presented perhaps the biggest twist in 24 history...in that the President of the United States was the man behind the terrorist activity and corruption that Jack had been battling during this season. President Charles Logan is established as the villain in this episode, and would show up again in future seasons - playing a big role in 24's final (well, final until this Summer) season as well.

Overall analysis: 24 was truly a unique show that was like none other before it and really nothing like it since. It was popular with both the fans and critics, and won numerous awards over its eight seasons, including Best Drama Series at the 2003 Golden Globe Awards and Outstanding Drama Series at the 2006 Primetime Emmy Awards. It pushed the envelope for broadcast television with its depiction of the effectiveness of torture and the way its protagonist Bauer continuously walked a moral gray area of the "ends justifying the means." It remains the longest running espionage-themed television drama ever behind MIssion: Impossible and The Avengers.

#7: Scrubs (28 total points)

Voting breakdown: One 1st place vote (10), Two 2nd place votes (18)

Judy Reyes as "Carla Espinosa"

Notable episodes

"My Lunch/My Fallen Idol" (Season 5, Episodes 20/21)

Posted Image

Analysis: Not technically a two-part episode, but you can't watch one without the other; this twosome is the epitome of how Scrubs defined itself as a single-camera comedy that could incorporate dramatic elements seamlessly. After J.D. hits rock bottom as a doctor, and assigns blame onto himself after a former patient commits suicide, Dr. Cox is there to console him. However, the tides quickly turn, and all of a sudden Dr. Cox finds himself in the same situation, on the slippery slope of taking the blame for patient death on his watch. Cox's co-workers, friends, and family all come together to pull him out of the deep depression that the catastrophe caused him to spiral into. This episode not only showcases each character in a way that highlights what is best about them, and how a hospital staff is truly a team effort, but also for the first time highlights that even the most-hardened souls need someone to lean on when times are tough.

"My Screw Up" (Season 3, Episode 14)

Posted Image

Analysis: This episode features Brendan Fraser (in what is probably his best work as an actor...) as Dr. Cox's fun-loving brother-in-law Ben. Like in previous episodes, Cox and Ben galavant around the hospital causing trouble and having fun. Although, at episode's end, what seemed like a weird coincidence that nobody would laugh at Ben's jokes or even acknowledge him come to a tragic reveal; Ben had died. Dr. Cox had been in denial, not sleeping this whole time, and when it was time for the funeral, Cox finally accepts the reality of the situation. This episode is one of a handful that Scrubs would mess with the viewers' perception of reality, and when the time was right, punch you right in the gut with it.

"My Life in Four Cameras" (Season 4, Episode 17)

Posted Image

Analysis: Scrubs was never afraid to try something out, and one way to show you are really a mad scientist is to take your single-camera show and switch to a multi-camera setup right in the middle of the episode. J.D. finds out his patient is a former writer on Cheers, and imagines what his life would be like as a sitcom. Let the zaniness ensue in front of a live studio audience. Of course, in true Scrubs fashion, this fun fantasy comes to a screeching halt when reality shatters J.D's fantasy faster than the Janitor's stand-up routine can clear out a crowd.

Overall analysis: Scrubs was not a show that had the universal appeal of other hospital based shows, but creator Bill Lawrence was always a step ahead of the viewers, and never let the show become predictable, stale, or unwatchable. Even after the inexplicable pickup of a ninth season after the show had been basically written off after the seventh, and then even eighth season, the show was re-imagined in a way that was fun and compelling. For a show that had nearly 8 starring characters to handle, from the Chief of Medicine all the way down to the Janitor, the series was able to make each character not only important to Sacred Heart Hospital, but to each other. Although the reboot of the series in season nine wasn't successful, the legacy of the show can live on as an imaginative ride through the life of an up-and-coming doctor and his peers.

So 3 people at EBL REALLY liked this show...and everyone else not so much. :shifty:

I never really cared for it...I watched it a few times in syndication when nothing else was on, but it never really did anything for me.

My Screw Up was easily my favorite episode of that show. The end of the episode still shocks me even though I know what's coming says a lot about how well it was written.

I also can't see Donald Faison act without seeing/hearing Turk.

Same here and unlike some other shows the early seasons were great too.

Zach Braff did some terrific acting and was nominated 3 times for an Emmy.

t-#5: Seinfeld (30 total points)

Notable episodes

"The Chinese Restaurant" (Season 2, Episodes 6)

Posted Image

Analysis: An early episode of the show that proved they knew exactly what they were doing, this episode was made with heavy protests by the network, who felt like it was an episode about nothing at all. Larry Davis and Jerry Seinfeld eventually won out, and what was made was one of Seinfeld's most popular episodes of all time. With Jerry, Elaine and George on their way to a movie, they stop at a Chinese restaurant, but they keep getting told their table will be ready in 5-10 minutes, only to keep missing out. There are various side stories involving the 3, but overall this was a "bottle episode" done completely right and showed NBC that the people behind Seinfeld should be trusted with the show, an important development.

"The Contest" (Season 4, Episode 11)

Posted Image

Analysis: Even if you've never seen an episode of Seinfeld, chances are you know about this episode. It is arguably the most popular episode of the series and broke new ground on what could be talked about and shown on network TV. The four participate in a battle of who can go the longest without masturbating, and the word itself is never mentioned (though heavily implied). Larry David won an Emmy for best writing for this episode, while TVGuide listed it #1 on their list of best tv episodes of all time. It shows Seinfeld at it's very best and it was also a huge development to the TV industry as it kept pushing boundaries.

"The Soup Nazi" (Season 7, Episode 6)

Posted Image

Analysis: My all time favorite Seinfeld episode, this is about a man who makes such good soup that he has people lining down the sidewalk trying to get in and get it. The catch is that if you do not order a certain way or rub him the wrong way, he will refuse to serve you soup and yell "NO SOUP FOR YOU". It is one of the most memorable characters in Seinfeld history and showed that even in Season 7, Seinfeld still was at the top of it's game. It's what allowed the show to become one of the best and most popular shows ever.

Overall analysis: Seinfeld is a household name because of how popular the tv show became, and chances are as you are reading this, the show is on TV somewhere in syndication. It only had a small main cast, but many memorable supporting characters, from Newman, to Uncle Leo, to Frank and Estelle Costanza, to George Steinbrenner. The chemistry between the four leads was incredibly throughout the series, with Jerry playing a perfect straight man (with his own quirks), and with George's obsessive-compulsive needs and his cheap and petty attitude providing much of the humor. In addition, Elaine's female perspective and escapades along with Kramer's aloofness provided perfect compliments to the other two. It is a show that may have lasted a little too long (that's for another day), but there is no doubt the impact it had on American culture and the entertainment industry overall.

Coming Monday: Show #5

I don't remember how I voted at this point, but I never watched Seinfeld with any regularity. It was more or less one of those shows that I have seen a lot of thanks to syndication.

The Chinese Restaurant is up there on my list of all-time favorite episodes of TV. Every single second is so compelling, and there are so many memorable lines from it. I know people say that "The Contest" is usually the best episode of the series, but I really believe that "The Chinese Restaurant" deserves that title.
