The Chinese Restaurant is up there on my list of all-time favorite episodes of TV. Every single second is so compelling, and there are so many memorable lines from it. I know people say that "The Contest" is usually the best episode of the series, but I really believe that "The Chinese Restaurant" deserves that title.
I'm a fan of The Contest over The Chinese Restaurant. But I don't know if it's my favorite. I don't even think I can pick a favorite, there are so many great episodes. The Keith Hernandez episodes, The Bubble Boy, The Outing, The Marine Biologist has probably my favorite ending ever are just a few to name that are also awesome episodes.

Notable episodes

"Pawnee Zoo" (Season 2, Episodes 1)

Posted Image

Analysis: Much like "The Office", Parks & Recreation struggled in its first season to establish itself, find a way to write for its characters and become a good show overall. Also like "The Office", the season 2 premiere showed a great improvement and the ability for this show to become great. In this episode, Leslie accidentally marries two male penguins and becomes a gay icon to the LBGT community in Pawnee. Throughout the episode, Leslie tries to say it was a mistake, but after dealing with the consequences, she stands by her mistake and ends up becoming much more likeable than she was in the first season (a habit helped by her staff and colleagues also changing their attitudes to her from Season 1 to 2). It's not an all time great Parks episode, but it is a very important one.

"The Master Plan" (Season 2, Episode 23)

Posted Image

Analysis: Despite Season 2 being a breakout season for Parks & Rec, there was still 1 problem with the show: Mark. The team behind Parks & Rec realized it and in this episode, Mark was essentially written out (and exited in the season finale next episode). In his place entered Adam Scott and Rob Lowe as Ben Wyatt and Chris Traeger, respectively, as state auditors who arrive in town to fix the Pawnee government. Both men ended up becoming series regulars from this point on and both (especially Adam Scott) fit in perfectly with the rest of the cast. It was a huge casting coup for the show to get rid of the 1 weak part of the show and replace it with 2 more strong suits, and set up Parks & Rec to have continued success in future seasons.

"Andy and April's Fancy Party" (Season 3, Episode 9)

Posted Image

Analysis: The Andy and April relationship through season 2 develops because of great chemistry between Chris Pratt & Aubrey Plaza, and in this episode, they invite all their friends and family to a fake dinner party that turns out to be a secret wedding (in typical Andy/April fashion, only a month after they started dating). What follows is a great showcase for the two, as well as for the rest of the ensemble cast (including Tom's best friend Jean-Ralphio). It was a great episode of this show, which was set in arguably the best all around season of the show.

Overall analysis: Picking out 3 episodes was very difficult, and I didn't even talk about Tom, Ann, or Ron, 3 very key aspects to the show. Parks & Rec has never been much of a ratings hit (and is constantly snubbed at award shows), but its small but loyal fan base knows what a good show it is. It has done an amazing job of character development, from the main cast, to Jerry and Donna, to supporting characters like Jean Ralphio and Ron's ex-wives, to other departments of the government. What separates Parks & Rec from other shows is the positive vibe around it. These characters are not mean spirited toward each other (although ask Jerry (not EBL) about that), and they go out of their way to do things for each other. It is something you rarely see on TV and you feel happy watching it. In my opinion, there is no better comedy on TV right now (and I feel that's been the case for years) and this is my favorite comedy show of all time. I encourage everyone who hasn't to watch it.

Rider Strong as "Shawn Hunter"

Posted Image

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Notable episodes

"Cult Fiction" (Season 4, Episodes 21)

Posted Image

Analysis: Boy Meets World is primarily known as a pre-teen/teen comedy, but it was very capable of going to serious places as this episode showed. Shawn was basically left abandoned and his teacher Mr. Turner took him in as a guardian. Eventually Shawn's dad came back and his relationship with Mr. Turner wasn't touched upon much anymore, but this episode showed Shawn being duped into a cult and everyone trying to stop him from being completely lost to them. Eventually, Mr. Turner crashes his bike and is left with horrible injuries, and during a tearful confession to Mr. Turner's unconscious body, Shawn reveals why he's been acting like he is and refuses to let Mr. Turner die on him. It was a very good showcase for Shawn and was basically just the start of Shawn's problems throughout the rest of the show.

"And Then There Was Shawn" (Season 5, Episode 17)

Posted Image

Analysis: One of the most memorable and funny episodes to BMW fans is this one, a spoof on the many horror films out during this time. 1 by 1, each person is killed off by a mysterious person, usually dealt with in humor (for example, when Mr. Feeny is killed, Eric, Shawn and Jack celebrate for Feeny because virgins never die). Shawn ends up being the "killer" (it turns out to be a dream from Cory during detention), but it ended up dealing with Shawn's feelings about the Cory and Topanga break up. Regardless, this was a hilarious episode and one every BMW fan enjoys. It was helped by being during it's peak run of Season 5.

"We'll Have a Good Time Then..." (Season 6, Episode 13)

Posted Image

Analysis: Shawn's relationship with his family (especially his father) is always a touchy one throughout the series, and in this episode his father comes back into town and promises to change, but Shawn doesn't believe it. Chet (Shawn's father) then has a heart attack and it leads to much stress for Shawn and Jack as they do not know what to do. Eventually, Shawn goes to see his father, and his father finally makes a real promise to change and stick around instead of driving around the country as he has been throughout much of the series. They share a tearful hug and embrace, only for Chet to then have a second heart attack that kills him. It is an incredibly emotional moment (I'd argue one of the most emotional things I've ever seen on scripted TV) and the look on Shawn's face when the doctor delivers the news is tough to take. Another example of how BMW was much more than just a teenage comedy show.

Overall analysis: Boy Meets World made a huge difference to many of us as we grew up. It's heyday fell in line with many of us as we grew up and I can speak for others who listed it in saying that it was a very influential show for us as we grew up. It dealt with life lessons that happen to all of us, and it did so in both comedic and real ways. It introduced new characters throughout the show, with some hits or misses, and like many 90s shows, it had some terrible continuity, but we overlooked that and just enjoyed the ride. I still watch reruns whenever I catch them on because I very much enjoy the show still. There is even going to be a spin off of the show called "Girl Meets World" about Cory and Topanga's daughter as she deals with growing up. That shows the fan base dedication to the show even today and I look forward to seeing the continuing story of the BMW characters.

Starring cast

Josh Radnor as "Ted Mosby"

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jason Segel as "Marshall Eriksen"

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alyson Hannigan as "Lily Aldrin"

Posted Image

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Neil Patrick Harris as "Barney Stinson"

Posted Image

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cobie Smulders as "Robin Scherbatsky"

Posted Image

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Notable episodes

"Something Blue" (Season 2, Episodes 22)

Posted Image

Analysis: Despite future Ted outright stating in the pilot of the show that Robin was not the mother, many fans still expected Robin to end up as the mother, and for the first two seasons the Ted/Robin relationship dominated the story. It wasn't until this episode, the season 2 finale, where it finally came to an end (although some fans still believed it for longer) as Robin and Ted broke up. It was a big episode for HIMYM as it dealt with Marshall and Lily's wedding aftermath, and you had no idea where Ted would go from there. Ultimately it led him to a big change in the direction of the show as Ted stopped obsessing over Robin and began the real journey to meeting the mother.

"Girls Versus Suits" (Season 5, Episode 12)

Posted Image

Analysis: The big 100th episode of HIMYM was highlighted by a huge musical number (in Barney's head) debating the merits of giving up suits to sleep with a hot bartender, but the deeper meaning of the episode was getting to know the mother more. Ted ends up dating the roommate of his future wife, and learns how much in common he has with her. Neither us nor Ted actually meet the mother, but there is a glimpse of her foot as we are teased into meeting her. This was a highly entertaining episode with great comedy and story, something HIMYM mixes very well.

"Something New" (Season 8, Episode 24)

Posted Image

Analysis: HIMYM was only supposed to run 8 seasons originally, and this was going to be the series finale until the cast and crew decided to do 1 more season worth of shows. Instead of Ted meeting the mother in this episode, instead the audience met her with a shot of her and a single line asking for a ticket to Farhamption (the place of Barney and Robin's wedding). It is a huge moment for the show as we finally meet the mother that has been the sole purpose of the show for 8 seasons, and in doing so we realize that she is going to be a big part of Season 9. It is a big decision for the producers of the show to make, but ultimately it is the right one as letting the audience get to know the mother before Ted meets her is a winning proposition.

Overall analysis: The reigning two time winner of EBL'ers favorite TV show of the year (2011, 2012), HIMYM is clearly one of the most popular shows among this group of people. HIMYM is a show that has some of the most unique episodes and running story lines out there (Robin Sparkles, Slap Bet, Doppelgangers, etc.) and that is what makes it such a loved sitcom by so many people. It has seen its rough patches throughout the series (Zooey), but it is one of the most unique comedies that I've ever seen and it has done a great job of giving it's characters a lot to work with, from Marshall's dad's death storyline, to Barney's growing up season to season, to Robin's inability to have children, the show pushes these characters to the limit and provides many emotional moments to go with all the comedy. It is in it's final season now and I am among many who can't wait to see what comes next and how it will ultimately end. It's going to be Legen......

To be fair, quite a few of my shows were from the 70s and 80s.

Starring cast

Bryan Cransten as "Walter White"

Aaron Paul as "Jesse Pinkman"

Dean Norris as "Hank Schrader"

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

RJ Mitte as "Walter White Junior"

Posted Image

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Notable episodes

"Phoenix" (Season 2, Episodes 12)

Posted Image

Analysis: Breaking Bad started with the idea that Walter White was a sad and pathetic man. While the creator of the show is famous for saying he wanted to turn Walter White from Mr. Chips to Scarface, it seemed doubtful to many he'd be able to do so with a man like the one we met. Sure, he could cook meth and kill Krazy-8 out of self defense, but would he really be capable of turning that evil? Well, this was the episode that showed us yes, he was. After getting blackmailed into giving Jesse his side of the money that he owed for a huge payday by Jane, Jesse's girlfriend (he was previously keeping it to avoid Jesse OD'ing), he went back to Jesse's house as he and Jane were in a state of euphoria after a heroin dosage, and by shaking Jesse and trying to get him up, he accidentally tossed Jane onto her stomach, causing her to begin to choke on her own vomit. Walt had every chance to save her...but chose not to. It was at this point we realized the man Walt really was, and the show was never quite the same again.

"Hermanos" (Season 4, Episode 8)

Posted Image

Analysis: There was always something about "the chicken man" Gus Fring that made him an amazing character, but it wasn't until mid-season 4 that we finally got a back story episode for him, and boy was it a great one. Gus had always hidden in plain sight, being the owner of Los Pollos Hermanos, while secretly being in charge of a major drug empire. He was a distant and cold man who would do anything (including order the death of children) to make sure everything went his way. Yet as viewers, we loved watching it all unfold because of what a great character he was. In this episode, we get the back story to learn why Gus was the way he was, and why he needed to get his revenge his way later on in season 4. It added Gus's side to the story in his battle against Walt and when it all came to a conclusion at the end of Season 4, it was aided even more by having seen this episode and learning who Gus Fringe really was. A terrific centerpiece episode for the best supporting character (non season 1 cast member) in the show's history.

"Ozymandias" (Season 5, Episode 14)

Posted Image

Analysis: Maybe my favorite episode of any TV show ever, and ask any Breaking Bad fan about this episode and they will also tell you how good and crazy it was. From the very beginning to the very end, this episode was absolutely crazy. With Hank dying near the beginning, with Junior finding everything out about his dad, with Walt telling Jesse about Jane, and with the entire Walt going crazy and leaving his family after almost killing his wife, it was something that was coming for a long time, and was done in such a great fashion. It felt very much like the finale of the show to me, and while I liked the actual finale a lot, nothing could've topped this episode from 2 weeks prior. It is TV perfection.

Overall analysis: Breaking Bad is a show many people (including myself) did not start watching until it was almost over, so many of us missed out on the experience of what it was like to be a fan of it all these years. Having watched it the past 4 months or so, I wish I had done so previously. It is hard to think of a show that was better acted throughout its run than Breaking Bad. They turned a huge corner starting in Season 2 after a rocky start in Season 1, and by Season 3 they were in full swing, staking their claim to one of the best tv shows ever. It got a lot of support among the EBL'ers, but ultimately falls short of the top spot. Regardless, I think we can expect it to take the top spot for best TV shows of 2013 in a few months. With a spin off series (Better Call Saul)coming soon, it's legacy will continue on for years.

Notable episodes

"Walkabout" (Season 1, Episodes 4)

Posted Image

Analysis: Lost's pilot was plenty good enough to suck many viewers in and make them wonder what the hell is going on on this show (in a good way), but for many people, the potential this show had was not fully felt until episode 4, "Walkabout". The mysterious character of John Locke was featured and like most of Locke's centric episodes, it was a great one. We went through the whole episode off-island looking at Locke's dull and pitiful life, and it wasn't until the end when we found out Locke was actually in a wheelchair off-island, and the minute he crashed on the island with the other passengers, he regained the ability to walk again. This episode showed that Lost had the ability to be a special show, and the character development was evident from the get go. We wanted Locke to get something good almost right into seeing how bad his life was, and figuring out the island had healed him was a mystery that was simply too intriguing to not come back to. A stepping stone episode for Lost.

"Through the Looking Glass" (Season 3, Episodes 22/23)

Posted Image

Analysis: For 3 seasons, we watched as the people in Oceanic Flight 815 tried to get off the island, battling against "The Others", a mysterious group who inhabited the island from before they were there. Throughout this 2 part finale, we followed Jack in what seemed like a normal flashback off the island, while on the island we followed the group as they became very close to rescue. In addition, the season long story of Desmond having flashes of Charlie's death came to a head in the most emotional moment throughout the show's history, where we saw Charlie sacrifice himself to save his friends. By the end of the episode, when we saw Kate walk out of the car and meet with Jack off island, we knew that something different was going on, and this was actually a flash forward, not a flash back. It was a game changer for the show mid-way through it's run. It led to a completely different narrative of how the show was told to us, and gave the series another boost of energy and storytelling as they planned the end game of the show.

"The Constant" (Season 4, Episode 5)

Posted Image

Analysis: Considered by many the best episode of the shows entire run, this episode focused on Desmond, whose consciousness kept going back and forth between 1996 and 2004, caused by the island's unique properties. Without a constant between the two time periods, Desmond would die of a brain aneurism. Throughout this episode, emotional moment after emotional moment is realized until the phone call between Desmond and Penny (his girlfriend he broke up with but still loved), and by the time the phone call is over, Desmond's time jumps have stopped and it set the stage for Penny to rescue him and the Oceanic 6 at the end of Season 4. Desmond and Penny was the most well developed relationship throughout the show's history, and this episode was a major part of it. It balanced time travel, romance and tenseness knowing that Desmond could die at any point. If you were ever going to watch 1 episode of Lost, make it this one.

Overall analysis: For much of the time period (especially the later seasons) that Lost was on, it dominated the chat and EBL discussion like no show has before or since, and it is no surprise to me that it ends up as #1 on the favorite tv shows of all time list. It became so popular among EBL'ers that some people watched the show simply because they had nothing to talk about in the chat if they didn't. The large ensemble cast worked well together, and when moments like Charlie and Juliet's deaths hit, they hit everyone hard. The idea of devoting single episodes to each character was a genius tactic and allowed the fans to learn more about these characters and their histories in order to care more about what they were doing on the island. Some may feel the show lost its way (no pun intended) in later seasons, and the series finale is very controversial, but for my money, there has never been a better show than Lost in TV history.

Thanks for voting!

No surprise that Lost is number 1 here. It also proved to be a very influential show for TV in general, as it's "flashback" model of story telling has been attempted to be duplicated in numerous shows since.

The show wasn't that hard to follow if you watched all of the episodes. It was definitely the first show I had gotten into where you couldn't miss an episode or you'd miss something important.
