With the WWE Network in Full swing, I decided I will review some PPVs! This will run with a similar format to when I did Video Game Reviews! I will take requests as well. 5/14 Note: Even thought not technically PPVs, I will also do Wrestlemania I and the WCW Clash of the Champions series if requested. 5/14 Note: If you link it, I will do PPVs for other promotions (TNA) as well. Only USA based promotions though. For requests: There is a two year rule for reviews (so, no PPVs will be reviewed that were less than 2 years ago), and no classic ECW requests, as I am doing all of those in order. For the record, the possible grades are A+, A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D, F By Grade:

Posted Image 2008 Royal Rumble January 27, 2008 New York, NY Background: The WWE was in a transition period here as 2007 was far from their best year. John Cena, who had been the longest reigning WWE Champion in almost 20 years, suffered an injury that had him vacate the title and had him missing Wrestlemania. Hell, 2007 was basically the year of the injury. On the Smackdown side, Undertaker won his first World Title in 5 years and tore his pectoral, missing most of the year. Edge came in and snatched the title with a Money in the Bank Contract…only to get hurt by Kane. This led to a Great Khali title reign best forgotten. On the Raw side, Triple H tore his other quad in January, and he wouldn’t return until Summerslam. I already mentioned Cena. Not injury related, but Rob Van Dam and Booker T also left the company. We won’t even get into the worst 2007 tragedy, which was the Chris Benoit situation. The ECW Brand had suffered through 2007 despite being an entertaining show. Unfortunately, it just wasn’t what original ECW fans had in mind. Overall, WWE just had tons of issues. Some new stars were coming up though. Mr. Kennedy, MVP, CM Punk, Umaga and John Morrison were making names for themselves. Some old favorites returned, such as Chris Jericho. 2008 looked like a bright year. With New Year’s Revolution gone, the Royal Rumble was the first PPV of 2008. The Card Michael Cole tells us that this is the first ever PPV that is in HD. I think that’s a bit crazy that HD was happening six years ago. I love the tunnel entrance for MSG. Shame we’ll never see that again. Career Threatening Match Ric Flair vs. MVP This was a few weeks after Vince McMahon told Flair that the next time he loses his career was over. This is one of those exceptions to the rule of a match being less interesting when you know who will win. We all know Flair is winning. I do think this speaks volumes about how MVP was thought of, considering one of Ric Flair’s final matches was against him. Flair starts out by telling NY how much of an honor it was to wrestle in Madison Square Garden. MVP interrupts. MVP was pretty damn over as a heel. I’m surprised that he didn’t become a top guy, but I felt the same about Mr. Kennedy at the time too. I wonder if Charles Robinson did all the late Ric Flair matches. Ric Flair def. MVP by Submission in 7:48. Flair counters the Playmaker into the Figure Four. Pretty good match. Flair could still go even at 59 years old, and MVP was a good heel here. We get some Vince and Hornswoggle stuff, as at this point he was still Vince’s son. He’s trying to get Hornswoggle to distrust Finlay. Oh man Mike Adamle debut. Totally forgot this. He hypes up JBL vs. Jericho, which even today to me is a bit of a mind boggling feud. Chris Jericho vs. JBL Jericho had returned back in November as part of the Save.Us campaign, which led to a match with World Champion Randy Orton. Orton threw Jericho into Smackdown commentator JBL, and JBL cost Jericho the title. The angle took an extreme turn quickly, including JBL hanging Jericho at one point. JBL claimed that he was the real savior of WWE, not Jericho. This was also JBL’s return to active competition after retiring back in 2006. I like JBL and I like Jericho, but this feud really didn’t need to happen and I’m still confused on why it did, especially with a hanging angle in there. The match is rather forgettable until the end, as Jericho goes nuts. JBL def. Chris Jericho by DQ in 9:23. The match is rather forgettable until the end, as Jericho goes nuts. Wearing the crimson mask, he bashes JBL with a chair and actually hangs JBL back. Once again, this feud really didn’t need to be this violent. We see Ashley Massaro trying to take to Maria. Santino is funny here. He’s Maria’s boyfriend, and he isn’t happy that Ashley wants Maria to be in Playboy. World Heavyweight Championship Edge© vs. Rey Mysterio Edge had taken over Smackdown as the top guy in 2007, but injuries messed that up. He returned at Survivor Series and beat Undertaker and Batista in a three way match using the Edgeheads (Zack Ryder and Curt Hawkins) as decoys to win the title. There’s also a love interest with Edge and Vickie Guerrero, which I always thought was weird since he was with Lita two years prior. Fans were not into Mysterio here, for some reason. Edge was one of the hottest heels the business had seen in quite a while, he was practically what WWE was hoping Randy Orton would eventually become. Edge gets cheered in his introduction. A “Let’s Go Edge” chant breaks out as well. Mysterio does botch a couple of moves here. I wonder if he was hurting here, as he would do an injury angle at No Way Out and not even be at Wrestlemania. Mysterio is getting booed out of the building here. I think Edge tried to bust out a Brock Lock there. Match revolves around Mysterio’s knee. Mysterio does some things I don’t remember him doing in other matches. A top rope double stomp for example. A sweet slide under the bottom rope into a Tornado DDT was also a great spot. Edge def. Rey Mysterio by pin to retain the title at 12:34. There is a great finish here. Vickie comes out of her wheelchair to pull the ref out when Mysterio had the title won. Edge goes for a spear, but Mysterio dodges to go for a 619. Mysterio ends up hitting Vickie with the 619 as she was protecting Edge, distracting Rey. Rey goes for a springboard…something…but he’s speared in midair. That spot has been copied, but it was incredible to see for the first time. Good match, crowd though hated Mysterio and I don’t remember why. Maybe because of just how awesome Edge was at this point. Kennedy is in Flair’s locker room congratulating him. Looks like he’s about to challenge Flair at No Way Out until HBK comes into the picture. HHH and Batista eventually join them, all talking about how the best man will win the Rumble. Maria comes out to accept the Playboy deal. Somehow we get Big Dick Johnson dancing in Patriots 19-0 body painting. This was right before the Giants-Pats Superbowl. Anyway…. Mike Adamle with the classic Jeff Harvey line. But…it’s fixed! How disappointing. Anyway, one of my favorite promo vids happen here for Hardy vs. Orton. Unfortunately, the music is different for the Network as well! Original theme was Rooftops by Lost Prophets. I don’t know what this is. Sigh. WWE Championship Randy Orton© vs. Jeff Hardy Jeff had been getting a megapush beginning in November, even beating HHH to get this title shot. Fans were very behind Jeff Hardy here, and I even believed he had a shot to win the title here. Orton was finally reaching his potential as a dick heel with that Viper focus and beginning his best two year run. He injured Matt Hardy in the build-up, and Jeff hit a Swanton off the stage the Raw before this. Hardy gets a lot of near falls in this and the fans are with him the whole way. Orton is playing a great heel. Hardy starts hitting some risky stuff, a flying bodypress off the apron comes first. Orton even gets creative in his restholds. A leg grapevine and a headlock? Jeff eventually hits a moonsault off the top rope onto the floor, which looked as sick as I remember it. Randy Orton def. Jeff Hardy by pin to retain the title in 14:03. Orton and Hardy get back into the ring after the moonsault, and a Hardy Twist of Fate attempt turns into a RKO. I remember not being happy at the time, but the finish made sense. It showed Jeff could hang in a World Title match main event, and put over Orton’s RKO is a legit finisher that shouldn’t be kicked out of a billion times. Jeff’s time will come. The Royal Rumble We’ve got six commentators for this one. At the time, the smart money was on HHH winning. Undertaker winning a 2nd in a row was also a popular choice. Mr. Kennedy was the IWC darkhorse that in hindsight didn’t stand a chance. Also, it was assumed Big Show would return after being gone for a year. Michael Buffer doing the “Let’s Get Ready to Rumble” bit was great. #1 and #2 were the last two of the 2007 Royal Rumble…Taker and HBK. Buffer introduces HBK as The Heartbreak Kid and not Shawn Michaels, which is a bit funny. Nonetheless, one of the all-time great starts and one of the little things that made the Taker-HBK rivalry that much better over the last two years of HBK’s career. #3 is the comedy Santino spot…which had him trying to pretend to be as tough as Taker and HBK. He gets superkicked in 10 seconds and is gone. #4 is The Great Khali. Gets the “You Can’t Wrestle Chant”. Taker eliminates him before #5. One great thing about this Rumble is HBK is on Taker at all points. Everytime Taker tries to eliminate someone, HBK is right behind him. #5 is One-Half the Tag Champs, Hardcore Holly. John Morrison, half of the other Tag Champs follows at #6. Tommy Dreamer gets in at #7 to a good response. Batista comes in pretty early at #8. Early face-off with Undertaker. They had feuded for most of 07. Dreamer tries to get involved, but he gets dumped by Batista for his trouble. Hornswoggle comes in at #9…and just hides under the ring. People were worried he would be winning after that… We get Chuck Palumbo at #10, who was doing a biker gimmick. An injured Jamie Noble is #11, who was feuding with Palumbo at the time. Palumbo gets rid of him quickly. #12 is CM Punk, who a few days earlier lost his ECW World Title to Chavo Guerrero. He gets rid of Palumbo. The other half of the Tag Champs Cody Rhodes is next at #13. He’s got awful music. This is when he was a meat and potatoes babyface. #14 is Umaga. Umaga was an awesome monster heel at this point. Holly seemingly stiffs him with chops, but Umaga no sells and Samoan Spikes him over the top rope. #15 is bald Snitsky. Not nearly as good at the monster heel thing as Umaga was. #16 is Morrison’s tag partner, The Miz. Some faint Miz chants in there. JR at this time mentions that Morrison reminds him of a young HBK…but isn’t sure about the heart. Interesting. Seemed right on the money. #17 is Shelton Benjamin, who does some really cool jumping spots, and gets superkicked out by HBK 20 seconds later. #18 is Superfly Jimmy Snuka. Gets the legends pop. Takes out everyone. Taker does the headbutt spot where he hurts himself. Roddy Piper follows at #19, and gets a massive reaction. Of course, we get Snuka vs. Piper. Piper was recovering from Hodgkin’s Disease here, and it’s amazing he was in the ring at Mania 14 months later. #20 is Kane, and he dumps Piper and Snuka, to the chagrin of the crowd. Carlito follows at #21. Him spitting the apple at Cody right away was a nice spot. I think at this point we were past Carlito being any more than he was. #22 is Mick Foley, who gets a great New York response. Huge Foley chants. He looks pretty solid here. We get Kennedy at #23, and he gets a solid reaction as well. Didn’t remember that Kennedy used that running kick in the corner than Zack Ryder uses. Takes starts kicking ass at this point. We get Big Daddy V at #24. During that, Taker eliminates Snitsky, but HBK kicks Taker out right afterwards. Kennedy then tosses HBK. Just like that, we were sure HHH was winning. HBK and Taker put in a really good half hour. #25 is Mark Henry…who at this point still hadn’t been a total badass yet. That transformation would happen this year (2008). Hornswoggle comes out from under the ring and takes out the Miz, which was hilarious. #26 is ECW Champion Chavo Guerrero. Shows how low the ECW title had come…as last year the Rumble winner was allowed to challenge for the ECW Title. Kane takes out Morrison. Hornswoggle tries to take out Cody Rhodes…but Mark Henry pulls him in. Finaly is technically #27, but gets DQed for jumping the gun. We lose Hornswoggle and Finlay here. #28 is Elijah Burke. Chavo takes out Punk…which is probably Chavo’s career highlight. #29 is HHH himself, leaving what probably is the Big Show at #30. Crowd pops for the Game. Seems obvious at this point it was coming to Batista vs. HHH. HHH takes out Rhodes, Big Daddy V and Cody Rhodes. He also sends Foley out…who clotheslines Burke out at the same time. HHH hits a little bit of everyone waiting for #30. #30 is one of the best surprises WWE has ever done, as a recently injured John Cena comes out. Cena was slated to not be back till April or May. Complete stunner. Cena takes out Carlito, Henry and Chavo. HHH, Kennedy, Umaga, Cena, Kane, Batista left. HHH and Cena go at it. Batista ends the Kennedy dream, and takes out Umaga as well. Batista and HHH eliminate Kane, leaving Batista, HHH and Cena. All three do their taunts. Batista dominates early, so much for stamina being a factor. Cena eventually counters a Batista Bomb, and HHH clotheslines Batista out. I didn’t even realize pointing at the Wrestlemania sign was even a thing at this point. Fans are solidly behind HHH here. Some obvious back and forth here. They both tease finishers and knock the other down. Cena teases the FU (AA) elimination spot, but HHH survives. HHH goes for the elimination, but Cena counters for the FU, to which HHH counters into a pedigree, to which Cena finishes it off with a FU elimination. John Cena wins the Royal Rumble, last eliminating Triple H at 51:26. Very good Rumble overall. HBK and Taker carried it early on. The Snuka-Piper spots were nice. It lagged a bit between HBK and Taker being gone and HHH showing up. Cena surprise, while I didn’t like it at the time, was one of the best surprises WWE had ever done. HHH and Cena were #29 and #30, and were the last two remaining, which is how it should be storyline wise. Last Thoughts and Grade From top to bottom this is a solid Pay-Per-View. MVP vs. Flair was solid. JBL vs. Jericho was okay, but not bad. Edge vs. Rey had some tough moments but made up for it with Rey’s selling (unless he was really hurt, which he might have been) and spectacular finish. Orton vs. Hardy was done well. Rumble was good, surprise was shocking. A lot of good to very good, but I would say nothing great. Final Grade: B+ Edited by RDT, Feb 25 2014, 04:11 AM.

Posted Image 2006 December to Dismember December 3, 2006 Augusta, GA Background: It is quite incredible how badly WWE botched the initial vision of the ECW Brand. Starting with the Rise and Fall of ECW Documentary in 2004, ECW still had an opportunity to make bucketloads of money in professional wrestling. For all intents and purposes, that idea dies with December to Dismember 2006. While ECW on SyFy would actually be a fun show later on, and actually be the show that leads to NXT, at the time, fans thought ECW would be the Touchstone Pictures to WWE’s Disney. From June 2006, the 2nd One Night Stand Pay-Per-View, to December 2006, every former ECW wrestler, except for maybe sorta Rob Van Dam was pushed to the side for the WWE’s version of “extreme” wrestlers. That will be clear in the main event of the PPV. I remember this one being a bad one, so let’s see if that vision remains. The main story revolves around Bobby Lashley, as he had moved to ECW to be the new big face of the brand. Lashley would last seven more months in WWE. Big Show had been ECW Champion since late June due to the South Philly Screwjob. To be fair, that was RVD’s fault. The fact that this show is in Augusta, GA is probably as good as indicator that ECW has missed the mark. The fact that it is a mere 2 hours and 14 minutes is another bad sign. The Card The idea of the Extreme Elimination Chamber…I think is actually pretty good. A lot of hardcore stuff can happen in a Chamber. It usually would happen to Chris Jericho though. Joey Styles mentions that Augusta was best knows for Golf’s Masters. Sounds Extreme! He also just said a new ECW Champion will be crowned. How’s that for a spoiler. Unless Show was stripped up the title ahead of time and I don’t remember. The Hardy Boyz vs. MNM This was one of two matches advertised beforehand, and none of these men are even in ECW. The Hardyz made an open challenge that was actually answered by the Voodoo Kin Mafia (New Age Outalws) in TNA. MNM reunited to accept. Melina’s entrance is pretty awesome. Why hasn’t a Diva copied it yet? Good start with Mercury and Matt Hardy. I don’t know what Mercury’s personal life was like at the time, but it seems like he’s excited to be on Pay-Per-View, like he’s getting a 2nd chance or something. The fact that Nitro can do a standing Shooting Star Press is ridiculous. Nitro and Jeff Hardy were trading the IC Title around this time I believe as well, which makes this match make more sense in storyline context. There are a lot of great double team moves happening here. If MNM got bigger, the Hardyz vs. MNM would have been one of those Dream Matches mentioned somewhere down the line. I can’t believe Johnny Nitro, John Morrison didn’t become a bigger star than he was. I know he can’t talk, but he literally has everything else from a wrestling standpoint. Melina just screamed and it was horrifying. Absolutely horrifying. Nice double vertical suplex reversed into a double neckbreaker by Matt Hardy. It is interesting that these four are having a good tag team match that isn’t involving a lot of high flying stuff. Awesome heel spot with Mercury setting up the Twist of Fate and Morrison teasing the Swanton, but Matt countered. They did a Poetry in Motion right before as well. Here comes the high flying stuff! Nitro and Jeff Hardy hit over the top rope dives to the floor onto the others. Melina needs to stop screaming. It’s distracting to the match. Surprised WWE Network didn’t block out Melina yelling out “Crack Whore”. The Hardy Boyz def. MNM when Jeff pinned Nitro at 22:33. The finish is awesome. Nitro accidentally dropkicks Melina off the apron, and Jeff gets a near-fall. MNM hit the Snapshot (a great double team move) on Jeff, but matt just breaks up the count in time. MNM goes for a top rope Snapshot…but Matt breaks it up and hits a double Diamond Cutter to MNM off the rope. Swanton on both MNM members then Jeff pins Nitro for the three. Very good match. Knowing that this PPV ends to early, they shoulda let them go 10 more minutes. Striker’s Rules Match Matt Striker vs. Balls Mahoney I do think the Matt Striker teacher gimmick was pretty solid. It seemed like a take off of Steve Corino. Striker says this will be an Extreme Enforcement of the Rules match. No top rope moves, no eye goughing, no foul language. I mean, it’s not like Balls Mahoney is coming off the top anyway… Striker has a picture of his face on his ass. I hope that isn’t the highlight of the match. Joey Styles and Tazz keep hyping up Balls Mahoney’s amateur background. Look, if the aspect we are selling about Balls Mahoney is his wrestling ability, once again, we’ve missed the point. I was wrong. Mahoney to the top! Striker shakes the top rope though. This match sucks by the way. Give the crowd credit. They are behind Balls. Balls Mahoney def. Matt Striker by pin in 7:12. Balls got the pin after the Ball Breaker (although they don’t call it that). I understand the lack of weapons in the opener. But Balls Mahoney was called the Chair Swingin’ freak for a reason. This match was boring and was not good. Now for the worst moment of the show I think: Sabu found unresponsive backstage. Fans chant bullshit. Will Sabu make it to the Chamber?!?! Elijah Burke and Sylvester Terkay vs. Little Guido Maritato and Tony Mamaluke Burke cuts a promo about the Elijah Experience. I didn’t like Burke at all in his whole WWE run…but I loved his TNA run as the Pope. I forgot about Trinity! I hate that Taz is trying to be Jerry Lawler on commentary. He’s not good at it. Little Guido owns. Always has. He steals Burke’s beanie hat and wears it himself. It’s funnier to see than it is to read here, I promise. Terkay almost botched throwing Little Guido over the top rope. So much for putting that power on display. The FBI are the faces here right? I just realized that although the FBI had never been faces. But it surely isn’t Burke and Terkay. I don’t see why I am supposed to care about anyone in the ring. I care about Little Guido by default. If this match was supposed to put over Burke and Terkay, it isn’t doing a good job. Elijah Burke and Sylvester Terkay def. The FBI when Burke pinned Mamaluke in 6:41. Burke uses the Elijah Experience, AKA the Stroke or the Skull Crushing Finale for the win. Terkay nails Guido with a Muscle Buster at the end. Take that Samoa Joe! Match was okay at best. No surprise Terkay didn’t last. Sabu’s heading to the hospital! He might have a broken neck! Daivari vs. Tommy Dreamer Here comes Muhammad Hassan! No, it’s just Daivari. I never understood how Hassan had to go but Daivari kept his job doing the same exact gimmick. He also has The Great Khali with him. Khali just debuted back in May and destroyed Undertaker for a bit. Now he’s in Daivari’s corner n the ECW PPV. He’d be World Heavyweight Champ six months later. Wrestling is weird that way. Poor Tommy Dreamer. Maybe we’ll get a chair shot in this one! On commentary they are talking about the Sabu deal, and I totally forgot that Paul Heyman was actually a heel here. Tommy Dreamer clearly sees Khali pull down the top rope but he goes flying over anyway. Ref saw it too and sends Khali to the back. We get a “fuck’em up Dreamer, fuck’em up” chant. Yeah. I don’t think there will be any fucking up tonight. Daivari def. Tommy Dreamer by pin at 7:22.. Dreamer was gaining some momentum with a tree of woe dropkick. Crowd was behind him. Goes for the DDT, but Daivari escapes and uses a roll up…a fucking roll up with the tights being held to get the win. Dreamer runs after Daivari which leads to Khali meeting Dreamer on the ramp. He does the double choke bomb and Dreamer crashes hard on the ramp. Pretty damn sick move to be fair. Who knew Khali would have the most Extreme moment on the show so far? Match was pretty uneventful. Tommy Dreamer putting over Daivari on an ECW Pay-Per-View isn’t a good decision. Poor Dreamer. Heyman inserts Hardcore Holly to replace Sabu in the Chamber. Fans boo. Hell, I think even WWE fans would didn’t care for ECW would boo. I would boo. And I like Hardcore Holly. Mike Knox and Kelly Kelly vs. Kevin Thorn and Ariel Knox’s theme music is the same that they used for a promo video of when Jim Ross kissed Vince McMahon’s ass and Undertaker turned heel. Kelly Kelly wishes CM Punk good luck in the Chamber, much to the chagrin to Mike Knox. Damn, CM really stands for chick magnet doesn’t it? Kelly Kelly’s gimmick is an exhibitionist. Boy fans were disappointed by that one. Is it just me, or is Ariel a lot hotter than Kelly? Why didn’t WWE keep Ariel? She could wrestle. Had a great look. Ariel and Kevin Thorn def. Mike Knox and Kelly Kelly when Ariel pinned Kelly in 7:43. Mike Knox heel turn! Crowd chants CM Punk. Knox leaves Kelly and she doesn’t stand a chance against Ariel. To be honest, this was the rare match that would have been better if it was just the women. But it wasn’t terrible. The Sandman shows up. Gets a good reaction and beats the crap out of Thorn. I assume this was all setting up the New Breed vs. Originals feud in 2007? But it was a solid segment. Bobby Lashley interview. Crowd boos, of course. Let me say something about Big Show before the main event. You can tell here that he was hurting and very out of shape. Probably why he took a year off after this. That and he’s in the Chamber for like 3 minutes. ECW Title Match: Extreme Elimination Chamber Big Show© vs. Sabu Hardcore Holly vs. Test vs. Rob Van Dam vs. CM Punk vs. Bobby Lashley Paul Heyman comes out first. He’s about to cut a promo, which apparently he told Big Show backstage before this that he was so upset about the show and how it was going that for the first time ever he didn’t want to come out for it. Heyman actually calls the six men in the match the six greatest ECW superstars ever. I wonder how sick that line made him. I believe this is the last time we see Paul Heyman until he comes in to aid Brock Lesnar in 2012. Once again, I think the match idea is great. This match has loads of potential. Champ Big Show is here first. He takes the pod with the barbed wire bat. CM Punk is next. Crowd is clearly on his side. Punk takes the pod with a chair. Here comes Test. Him and Big Show are on the same side in the story. Test takes the crowbar pod. Taz mentions he’s wrestled some crowbars. Was that an undercard match on Flair vs. Broomstick? Bobby Lashley time! And the crowd goes mild! I do think Lashley was fine in everything he did before ECW. He takes the table pod. That means we start with RVD vs. Hardcore Holly. Looks like Holly is also on the Show-Test-Heyman team! RVD does some nice Spiderman spots. Does a springboard press, but misses Holly and catches the chains of the chamber. He misses the 2nd press and hangs himself up on the top rope. RVD hits a Rolling Thunder over the top rope onto Hardcore Holly and the steel. Holly vs. RVD has been an entertaining five minutes. CM Punk is in. He does a Sabu throwing chair spot to Hardcore Holly, then a springboard clothesline. RVD gets his revenge, doing a real Sabu throwing chair spot which hits Punk perfectly on the head. It’s a shame we never got RVD vs. Punk in a major program. Punk sends RVD into the corner with a chair propped up. This match is getting good! Holly takes control, gets a superplex on Punk. Predictably Test is next, and nails Punk with the crowbar and then tries to skin RVD with it (RVD had been busted open). RVD is starting to get chair happy, nailing both Test and Holly before hitting Punk with the skateboard. Five Star Frog Splash to Punk and Punk is gone. Wrong man to go first, but it was smart to make RVD the one to do it to minimize the boos. Test nails Holly with a big boot and surprisingly eliminates him. RVD goes to the rope of Show’s pod, but Show holds RVD’s foot down. Test hits two chair shots then sends RVD crashing to the mat. He puts a chair on RVD’s face, then drops the elbow from the top of the pod. Test eliminates RVD. Great spot. Horrible result, as the two guys who were most over with the crowd are the first two of the first three out. “Where’s my refund” chants start up. Heyman’s riot guys keep Lashley in his pod when he’s supposed to get out, but Lashley uses the table to break through the chains on the roof (wha?). Lashley beats the crap out of Test, slamming him through one of the pods (which because of the table left in there doesn’t really create the same impact it normally does). Test eventually is gone after a Lashley spear. We await the Lashley-Big Show confrontation. Lashley is throwing furniture at Big Show’s pod. When Big Show gets in, he beats on Lashley’s chair with the barbed wire bat. It eventually gets caught in the chains and he loses it. Lashley promptly throws Big Show through a pod. Bobby Lashley wins the ECW Title and Extreme Elimination Chamber, last defeating Big Show at 24:42. Lashley counters a Show Chokeslam into a DDT. Eventually Lashley hits a spear and gets the pin. There is a small crowd pop there. Then it gets all silent. Gotta love how the table was just used to break through the pod and nothing else. The match isn’t awful, but the people and booking decisions surrounding the match made it a lot worse. The crowd did not want to see Bobby Lashley beat up Test before finishing off the Big Show to win the title. The opener was fun. But then the next four matches are completely whatever. In fact, all of them are matches that belonged on TV and not PPV. Dreamer losing to Daivari served what purpose exactly? Were they really pushing Daivari? Other than the opener and the main event, there were no videos to promote why these matches were happening (although the Mixed Tag had a storyline to it at least). There are some bright spots though. Opener was very good. Sandman appearance was okay. Extreme Chamber was pretty okay quality wise. And that’s enough to avoid a flat out F for me. Final Grade: D Edited by RDT, Feb 28 2014, 12:01 AM.

Posted Image WWF In Your House (IYH 1) May 14, 1995 Syracuse, NY Background: 1994 was a changing of the guard for the World Wrestling Federation. Firmly past the days of Hulkamania, Bret Hart was placed on top of the company. And while Bret had a stellar year in 1994, Vince McMahon clearly thought that he needed a World Champion that was big and strong, much like Hogan. Enter Big Daddy Cool Diesel. With Diesel on top, Bret was pushed back to the upper midcard; being the workhorse while Diesel got the top spot. WCW had planned to run 10 PPV events in 1995. In 1994, the WWF ran five (Rumble, Mania, KOTR, Summerslam and Survivor Series). In Your House would become the PPV event to bridge the major shows. Thus, the monthly PPV format had been established. The WCW-WWF War continued on. The Card Todd Pettengill! WWF is giving away a house! Bret Hart vs. Hakushi Video before the match shows Hakushi doing a moonsault off a stage onto Bret. That’s good enough for me. Maybe I am mistaken, but isn’t the name “The Modern Day Kamikaze” racist? Anyway, Hakushi is an awesome heel, it’s a shame he didn’t do better in his one year in the WWF. This match should be absolutely awesome. Bret dedicates the match to his mother, the PPV is on Mother’s Day afterall. Hakushi has an undefeated streak on the line. This is also the first of two matches that Bret Hart will be wrestling in. He fights Jerry Lawler later. Crowd is chanting “USA”. Bret’s Canadian you know… Nice scientific wrestling early on. Hakushi has control, which by default puts him over, as it seems like he is out wrestling Bret Hart. Bret really is making Hakushi look like a million bucks here. I had no idea Hakushi had the Bronco Buster in his arsenal. This is still all Hakushi. Perfect handspring elbow into the corner. Bret starts a comeback, but Hakushi stops him again. Beautiful diving headbutt by Hakushi. This match is also continually putting over Bret’s resilience. Bret starts to make the comeback. I never understood the whole Bret Hart Five Moves of Doom thing in regards to him never changing it up. Unless a bulldog is one of those moves. Even so, he didn’t do all five. Hakushi just sold a clothesline but flipping in the air. Wow. Shinja (Hakushi’s manager) tried to trip up Bret, and Bret responded by diving through the ropes onto Shinja! Hakushi goes for a vertical suplex…only for Bret to reverse it over the top rope. Both men go flying out. Hakushi hits a perfect springboard Asai Moonsault on the outside! What a match! Bret Hart pins Hakushi in 14:39. Bret tries to roll Hakushi up, only Hakushi blocks and tries a roll up himself. Hakushi then tries a belly to back suplex, but Bret rolls Hakushi up and gets the win. Fantastic match. Hakushi and Bret looked strong. Bret twists his knee coming down from the ring apron. Lawler then in the 1-900 hotline room tries to get the match started with Bret right away. Great stuff. Handicap Match Jeff Jarrett and The Roadie vs. Razor Ramon This feud started at the Royal Rumble, where Jarrett won the IC title from Ramon. The Roadie caused a DQ in the Wrestlemania rematch. Apparently The 1-2-3 Kid was supposed to be Ramon’s partner but he was injured. Not sure why we didn’t just get Jarrett vs. Ramon for the IC Title here. Ramon and Jarrett seem to have good chemistry. Story of the match is Jarrett dominating, and everytime Ramon takes control The Roadie attacks Ramon. Apparently this is the Roadie’s first match. Roadie is the Road Dogg, in case anyone reading didn’t know. One of my favorite spots is Jarrett going for a sunset flip, and Ramond breaking it by just punching Jarrett in the face. So effective. Another good spot between these two is Ramon setting up the Razor’s Edge, and Jarrett just backdropping him over the top rope. Razor Ramon def. Jeff Jarrett and the Roadie when he pinned Jarrett in 12:36. Ramon knocks Jarrett into the Roadie, then hits the Razor’s Edge for the win. It’s a standard Jarrett vs. Razor match with some Roadie stuff, but that’s not a bad thing. Jarrett and Roadie double team Ramon afterwards…when Aldo Montoya tries to make the save? Okay? Montoya gets thrown out of the ring before a random guy comes in to save Ramon. This is the Savio Vega debut. They treat him as a random fan, with police and all coming to escort him out. Michael gets in a funny line about Montoya. “Knocks that athletic support attire off his head”. Lawler’s still begging to fight the injured Bret Hart right away. He tells Jack Tunney that he’s just a president, but Lawler’s a King! We get a video hyping up Sycho Sid. Man the main event is going to suck. King of the Ring Qualifier Mabel vs. Adam Bomb Mabel’s path to the main event starts here! Never realized Adam Bomb was a high flyer. He hits a flying clothesline off the top rope and dives over the top onto Mabel. Mabel pinned Adam Bomb in 1:54. It doesn’t matter though. An Adam Bomb crossbody leads to a slam for the win. In the 1-900 room, Razor introduces Savio Vega as a Caribbean Superstar. WWF World Tag Team Championship Yokozuna and Owen Hart © vs. The Smokin’ Gunns Owen Hart had a surprise partner at Wrestlemania to take on the Gunns and revealed Yokozuna. They won the titles. This is the rematch. They show Bret with an icepack on his knee. Apparently according to Bret Hart’s book, Jim Neidhart was supposed to be Owen’s partner in this whole storyline, but he got himself fired. You know, Billy Gunn is in the ring here. This was 19 years ago. Billy Gunn is a Tag Team Champion today. Heck the Roadie is his partner today, and we saw him earlier. Pretty standard match. The Gunns isolate Owen Hart while trying to keep Yokozuna out. Yokozuna and Owen Hart retain the title when Owen pins Bart Gunn in 5:44. Weak finish. Yoko takes himself out on the outside by running into the ringpost. The Gunns double team Owen but Owen survives. Bart Gunn ends up on the outside and Yoko legdrops him…although he only gets him with the end of his leg and not the thigh, which looked horrible. He rolls Bart in and Owen gets the pin. I wish it got more time and the match itself wasn’t bad. Diesel interview. Kevin Nash just is not the Hulk Hogan type babyface. Bret Hart vs. Jerry Lawler Lawler has a gorgeous woman in the ring with him…who he claims is his mother. Bret backstage reveals that he faked the knee injury. This I believe is also when Vince McMahon says Gorilla Position on air, but it is edited out here. Bret sells the knee injury everytime Lawler looks at him. Great stuff. Bret dominates Lawler early on. Lawler though gets a piledriver…which Bret basically no sells. Lawler regains control with a rake to the face, but it doesn’t last long as a top rope leap goes wrong. Jerry Lawler pinned Bret Hart at 5:01. Shinja comes to ringside and as the ref tries to tell him to leave, he gets knocked through the ropes with his leg getting caught. Bret has the match won, but Hakushi comes off the top rope and nails the Hitman. Hakushi hits two more diving headbutts, and the ref comes back just to see Lawler get the pin on Bret. Good match, but too short. Showed that Lawler can’t hang with the Hitman without help, which is basically the truth. We spend about 10 minutes giving away this house. What a fucking waste of time. With this and the Mabel vs. Adam Bomb matches, we could have added a few minutes to the Tag Title match and Lawler vs. Bret. WWF Championship Diesel© vs. Sycho Sid Sid was part of the Million Dollar Corporation here. Sid was Shawn Michaels’ bodyguard at Wrestlemania XI, where he inadvertently cost HBK the title. He turned on HBK the next night. Diesel saved HBK, turning HBK and setting up Diesel vs. Sid. Diesel starts off with these fast moving flying clotheslines into the corner. I admit I was surprised. Apparently there was a Henry Godwinn attack on Diesel on Superstars that injured his back, so Sid is working on that. Match has really gotten pretty slow. It’s hard for Diesel to get sympathy as a babyface, and with Bret Hart having great matches on the card, it’s hard for Diesel and Sid to be the main. We get a couple of camel clutches. This match hasn’t been horrid, but it’s just boring and slow. Sid hits a low chokeslam on Diesel. Diesel power kicks out of a Sid powerbomb. Now Diesel “Hulk’s Up”. I’m sorry but it’s obvious to me why no one bought this. Diesel retains the title by DQ when Tatanka interferes in 11:31. Diesel hits the Jackknife before Tatanka runs in. Bam Bam Bigelow comes in to even the odds…he was kicked out of the Million Dollar Corporation after losing to LT. Slow match. I guess the best you could do considering who was involved. The first In Your House could have been really good. Bret vs. Hakushi was a great start. The Ramon vs. Jarrett/Roadie match was solid as well. It goes downhill from there. Either give Mabel and Adam Bomb more time or don’t have them on the card (I pick the latter). This whole house giveaway thing…if even real…do it on RAW or something. Both the Tag Team Title match and Bret vs. Lawler could have been helped by having an extra few minutes each. And Diesel vs. Sid is just not the way to go…and ending it with a DQ is even worse. Final Grade: C |

Liked the December to dismember review, except the PPV was in Augusta, Georgia. I used to live there lol Anyway, keep them coming as it's fun to read and also go back and watch as well. |

Posted Image WCW World War 3 98 November 22, 1998 Auburn Hills, MI Background: 1998 was the beginning of the end for WCW (it was probably really Starrcade 97…but whatever). With the WWF having their best year in probably 10 or 11 years, they had turned the tide and had been winning the Monday Night ratings war. This was still before WCW was dead in the water though, and they certainly still had the talent to overtake the WWF. WCW had just been relieved of one of its biggest talent acquisition failures as The Warrior had just finished up. Hollywood Hogan also would be gone at this point…running for president! I’m not sure what the official story is, but it is accepted that Kevin Nash was the booker at this point. Watching this show, I understand why (although I don’t actually think the booking of Nash is that awful here). Even the card itself though…showed that WCW would probably never regain the lead. For example, Goldberg. WCW’s 1998 cash cow. He’s not on this Pay-Per-View. In fact, Chris Jericho ran an entertaining angle against Goldberg for months, hoping to put on “the greatest squash match of all time”. Jericho’s wrestling Bobby Duncam Jr. here. It is also interesting to point out that one of WCW’s calling cards was that they had great action in its undercard, then big names in the main event. You see at this point, that while some of the undercard is solid, it isn’t nearly at the level as 96 or 97 (or even earlier in 98) WCW. Also, the main event is in fact not the World War 3 Battle Royal…but a US Title match between Bret Hart and Diamond Dallas Page. Just a quirky decision there. I get putting Page in the main though, he has been in every main since Bash At the Beach. The Card The opening is something I would expect for a WCW Playstation game. That’s not a bad thing though. Here comes a limo! Oh, Goldberg’s here? I’m so confused since he isn’t on the match card. Tony Schiavone, Bobby Heenan and Mike Tenay are your announcers. Talking about Hogan not being here…and perhaps we’ll see him on Nitro! Already advertising Nitro. Mean Gene Okerlund: WCW HOTLINE! Wrath vs. Glacier Sub-Zero vs. Smoke match coming up. I like Wrath’s theme. I’m guessing this is post-Vandenberg Wrath, as he doesn’t even have that cool entrance attire. I guess Glacier is the heel? Wrath shoves Glaicer out of the ring. Crowd says that yeah, Glaicer is the heel. Glacier hits some kicks. I’m sure Glacier is a legit martial artists, but he really never learned how to use those skills in professional wrestling. Glacier always looks really stiff before doing any martial arts moves and it usually takes away from his matches. Steve Blackman was really good at this. Mike Tenay tells us that Wrath is going to be on the Mortal Kombat TV show. Shocking. Wrath actually looks pretty good here. Surprised Vince didn’t give him a bigger run when Wrath was Adam Bomb. Not saying it would have been successful, but his size makes him seem like a WWF guy. Glacier just did this terrible hook spin kick. Looked horrible. Wrath pins Glacier in 8:22. Wrath blocks Glacier’s thumb spike submission and hits the generic big man finisher…the Pump Handle Slam! (The Meltdown). Best Wrath and Glacier match I’ve ever seen. Wrath actually looked solid. This was a glorified squash. Bret Hart promo video. I always thought Bret Hart was at his best playing a bitter heel. He talks trash about guys like Lex Luger, Chris Benoit and DDP. Anyone who says Bret Hart can’t talk stopped watching him after 1996. Stevie Ray vs. Konnan NWO music! At this point it could mean anyone, and in this case its Stevie Ray. I guess this is a NWO B Team vs. Wolfpac B Team match? I always thought Konnan had some unique moves…but I never saw any psychology from him whatsoever. His rolling clothesline is something you didn’t see a lot of guys do. Stevie Ray’s offense usually includes a lot of clubbing blows and the random kick. And that’s what we get here. A lot of rest holds 5 minutes in. I never liked how often WCW would talk about other storylines and ignore the match in the ring. Right now they are talking about Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Goldberg. Hey, why isn’t that match on this card? Stevie Ray defeated Konnan by DQ at 6:55. Vincent accidentally hits Stevie Ray with the slapjack. Konnan does some punches, than hits the ref out of anger or something to cause the DQ. Then Booker T comes out to save him, which angers Stevie Ray because he’s tough and doesn’t need help. Boring match, stupid finish. Ernest Miller and Sonny Oono vs. Perry Saturn and Kaz Hayashi How the hell did Perry Saturn get involved in this? Wasn’t he just fighting Raven? The Kaz Hayashi-Perry Saturn theme mash-up is just strange. Is there a weirder team out there for a PPV match than Perry Saturn and Kaz Hayashi? Some time killing early on. Ernest Miller tells Hayashi to leave in 5 seconds then turns his back on him. Kaz tags in Saturn. Funny I suppose. Miller beats up Kaz, and then tags in Oono. Hayashi no-sells Oono’s offense and Oono offers him money. I guess this is a comedy match then? Saturn vs. Miller is pretty good. Saturn always had a good array of suplexes. Also a nice legsweep by the Cat when Saturn went for a side kick. Cat sends Oono in to fight Saturn and of course Saturn gets the advantage. This match has no flow whatsoever…and way too much Sonny Oono. Oono just missed three chops to the ground and let Hayashi tag in Saturn. Looks a lot worse than it reads. Ernest Miller and Sonny Oono def. Perry Saturn and Kaz Hayashi when Oono pinned Saturn in 8:04. Saturn is about to suplex Oono, and the Cat hits him with a kick to the throat. Oono lands on him to get the win. Match had no flow or chemistry whatsoever. Also, was the point to make Saturn and Hayashi look awful? Because that’s what it did. Chris Jericho and Lee Marshall! WCW Cruiserweight Championship Juventud Guerrera© vs. Billy Kidman This should be good! Both Kidman’s and Juvi’s themes are awesome. I guess Juvi is part of the LWO! Eddy Guerrero comes out to explain that Juvi is in the LWO! Rey Mysterio Jr. comes out with a LWO t-shirt to say that he should have the Cruiser title shot, but because Juvi is champ, Rey shouldn’t have the shot. Guerrero explains that you need to make sacrifices for family. Early rocker dropper form Juvi. He then hits a flying headscissors which Kidman sells like a million bucks. Juvi is now a full blown heel after the LWO thing. Top rope legdrop from Kidman. I really thought Kidman was going to be a star in pro wrestling watching him in 1998. The Kidman vs. Juvi battles (and there are a bunch of them in 1998) is really a representative of the last great days of the WCW Cruiserweight division. Kidman hits a perfect dropkick as Juvi was coming off the top. Great timing. Juvi hits a perfect top rope hurricanrana to the outside! Very nicely done. This match seems slow-paced compared to their Bash at the Beach 98 encounter. Maybe to put over that Juvi is a heel now? Wow. Juvi tosses Kidman into a 2nd ring, and then does a double springboard dropkick! He kinda falls on the second jump, but it was still impressive enough. Wow again. Kidman sends Juvi from one ring to another with a hurricanrana, then leaps ring to ring with a cross bodyblock. Great innovation with the two rings. More double ring action. Juvi does a springboard hurricanrana…sending Kidman into a different ring again! Juvi misses the 450…but he lands on his feet. Hurricanrana for a really close two count! (Looks like Kidman didn’t kick out in time). Juvi slaps the ref…but doesn’t get DQed. Billy Kidman pins Juventud Guerrera in 15:27 to win the title. Rey Jr. holds Kidman on the top rope and Juvi crashes to the mat on a hurricanrana attempt. Kidman hits the Shooting Star Press for the win. Great match. Great spots from ring to ring. Eddy Guerrero tells Rey Jr. to make a choice, in the LWO or out? Rey Jr. says no and runs from the LWO members in the ring. Rick Steiner vs. Scott Steiner Buff Bagwell and some guy dressed as a NWO referee come out with Scotty Steiner. The NWO is beating down on Rick Steiner in the back. The Giant drags Rick out to the ring. Scott Steiner and Buff Bagwell beat down on Rick Steiner. Rick manages to make a comeback, but he’s selling the attack from the NWO. Tony Schiavone mentions that it would be nice to see the Steiners go at it 1 on 1. I couldn’t agree more. Almost like they should save it for a PPV or something. Scott Steiner and Rick Steiner wrestled to a no contest. Hey it’s DA MAN. Goldberg’s here to make the save. The World Champ makes the save on a middle of the card match. Not like he should be defending the title or anything. Kevin Nash vs. Scott Hall Hall comes out with various NWO members. Eric Bischoff is out here before Nash comes out. Bischoff orders the NWO members to beat the crap out of Scott Hall. Nash runs out to make the save! Big Outsiders chant breaks out. Hall makes a peace offering, but Kevin Nash leaves Hall in the ring. So I guess we aren’t getting the match? Kevin Nash vs. Scott Hall was cancelled. WCW TV Championship Chris Jericho© vs. Bobby Duncam Jr. Of all the wrestlers in WCW, why does Bobby Duncam Jr. of all people get a TV title shot? Ralphus is a stroke of genius. Gotta be honest, you can tell Jericho doesn’t want to be there. The nixing of the Goldberg angle was the straw that broke the camel’s back for Jericho and a WCW run. Jericho busts out one of my favorite submissions, the crossbow surfboard. Bobby Duncam Jr. feels like the homeless man’s Curt Hennig. Jericho is doing all he can to make the match entertaining. Jumps off the railing with a clothesline. Missile dropkick. I just don’t see why anyone should care about Duncam. Jericho goes for the Lion Tamer and the crowd erupts. They boo when Duncam breaks it. Chris Jericho retains when he pinned Bobby Duncam Jr. in 13:19. Jericho nails Duncam Jr. in the back of the head with the TV title for the pin. Jericho tried, but Bobby Duncam Jr. offered a whole lot of nothing. Match was pretty boring. World War 3: The 60 Man 3 Ring Battle Royal Winner gets a WCW World Title match at Starrcade! I’m going to just name some random guys here. Apparently you can be pinned in this match too. How about that. Alex Wright is out first! Barry Darsow! Bobby Blaze! Chip Minton! I swear they should have hyped Chris Adams as Stone Cold’s trainer. Hogan, Horace Hogan brother! BARRY HOROWITZ! Other than Jericho, so far Juvi has been the best heel on the show. Wow The Renegade was really out of shape at this point. Super Calo! Villiano V…but not IV! Kendall Windham! I see most of the top WCW guys in this, only missing Sting and Ric Flair. I know Randy Savage was injured. It’s hard to keep track of anything in these. Breakdown: 60 men, 3 rings. 1 WAR! I’m rooting for Horowitz. Normal Smiley was the first to go! Kevin Nash is practically dumping his entire ring out. Scott Putski is gone. WWF almost built their Lightheavyweight Division around him! You can eliminate anyone by just throwing them from the ring. Over the top rope doesn’t matter. Kevin Nash took out his whole ring in like 3 minutes. He stands there awaiting the other two rings. We’re down to 35 people. 1 person in ring 3 (Nash). We’re fighting down to 20 men for 1 ring. The Giant begins to dump some, but then the entire ring jumps on him! In WCW terms, Wright/Both Guerreros/Benoit/Saturn/Disco/ vs. The Giant is a huge advantage for the Giant. Rey Jr. is the last man eliminated before we come down to 1 ring! I like all the hype about Nash’s strategy. All he did was just dump people as fast as possible. Saturn and Miller eliminate one another and go at it, bad blood from earlier! Down to 18. So long Alex Wright and Chavo! And there goes Eddie! And Disco Inferno! And Kidman! Down to 13 just like that. Nash and The Giant go at it. I predict those will be the final two. Or Nash and Hall. Outsiders double team the Giant. Crowd gets into it. Lex Luger dumps Stevie Ray. Mongo dumps Scott Norton and Nash dumps Norton. Nash, Giant, Hall, Booker, Benoit, Malenko, Wrath, Luger, Konnan and Scott Steiner left. Bam Bam Bigelow shows up, and Goldberg comes out to attack Bigelow! It’s almost like they should have had a match or something. 8 guys left. I lost count somehow, but Scott Steiner is gone. Oh, Wrath is gone too. Booker T is gone, 7 left. Konnan, Nash and Luger for the Wolfpac. Benoit and Malenko for the Horsemen. Giant and Scott Hall in there as well. Konnan eliminates himself trying to get rid of Hall. Nash becomes the ring general to 5 on 1 the Giant, which the crowd erupts for. They do it! Giant is gone! Luger and Nash get rid of Benoit, while Hall gets rid of Malenko. Luger vs. Nash vs. Hall. 3 WWF 94 mainstays. Kevin Nash wins the 60 Man Battle Royal, last eliminating Lex Luger at 22:31. Luger tries to rack eliminate Hall, but Nash hits a big boot and both Luger and Hall go over the top. Weak ending as Luger didn’t go over the top well. I don’t particularly like the World War 3 Battle Royal in general as there are way too many guys who don’t have a chance in hell, but I do actually like the way this was booked, which I’ll explain later in the conclusion of this review. Short version, if you are going to want Nash to be strong for Goldberg, dominating the Battle Royal was a good way to make it happen. WCW US Championship Diamond Dallas Page© vs. Bret Hart Michael Buffer is out to announce the main event! DDP is wearing the US Title upside down…. DDP dives over the top rope on to the Hitman to get this thing going. Bret does subtle small things as a heel that he doesn’t do as a face. I like how Bret wrestles with a sense of arrogance as a heel, like a “it’s obvious I’m better than you” style. Hard to explain. I do like that the Diamond Cutter can be done at any point. It makes for a lot of great fakes and can suddenly get the crowd into it. This match has been pretty disappointing so far. I think it is a combo of DDP not being a great wrestler, and WCW Bret Hart just not being the same Bret Hart. Bret going for a tombstone and DDP reversing it into his own tombstone was a nice spot. Match is picking up. Nice belly to belly from Page. DDP then busts out this weird piledriver-pedigree spot. A pancake maybe? I actually like DDP’s version of the sharpshooter, the going down to one knee part of it. Looked kinda of cool. The Figure Four around the ring post is one of my favorite moves in wrestling ever. Such an effective visual. Bret continues to methodically work on the leg of Page. For whatever reason, this is missing the mark. It’s the standard Bret Hart match, but the crowd just can’t get into it. DDP just busted out the post figure four. Turnabout is fair play! DDP has a chair! Charles Robinson tries to grab it, and Bret shoves Page into Robinson, knocking him out. Diamond Dallas Page pinned Bret Hart to retain the title in 18:31. NWO ref from earlier comes back. Bret nails Page with brass knucks and locks in the Sharpshooter, to which the NWO ref calls for the bell and awards the US title to Page (NWO ref has authority then?). WCW ref Mickie Jay says no, and Page nails Bret with the Diamond Cutter. 1…2…3. Finish is okay I guess. To be honest, match was lacking. It looked like two guys just going through the motions. Very up and down card. Opener was better than it had any right to be, but I wouldn’t call it good. Konnan vs. Stevie Ray was whatever and had a crap finish. Miller and Oono vs. Hayashi and Saturn was non-sensical and stupid. And it buried Saturn. Why not just do Saturn vs. Miller? Cruiser Title match was very very good. Juvi’s heel turn was great and he played it well. Now here is where I have a lot of issues with the show. I’m sure both Scott Steiner vs. Rick Steiner and Kevin Nash vs. Scott Hall were big matches for this show. Both didn’t happen. Both were non-matches. And to be fair, that’s pretty bs. Chris Jericho vs. Bobby Duncam Jr. was a waste of space. Poor Jericho. 13 minutes too! 60 Man Battle Royal was what it was. I only really like one version of this match (the first one, 1995). That being said, it is booked rather well. While we can debate till we are blue in the face about Nash being the man to eventually beat Goldberg and all, if that is the route they are going, then Nash needed to dominate this match. And he did. I think Nash last eliminating the Giant on his own would have been a better finish, and the actual finish was a bit weak, but it was doable. Nash was also mega over here. Nash being mega over makes me wonder why the World War 3 Battle Royal didn’t close the show. It would have made perfect sense. The US Title Main Event was a bit lackluster and felt like both men was just going through the motions. The finish is okay I suppose. Unfortunately I think Bret Hart had been booked into oblivion at that point and he’s not cared for as a heel, even though he plays it quite well. I do think Hart vs. Page could have been a main event feud for WCW, and I guess this is the closest they’ll get. A lot of stupid crap was a foreshadowing of WCW’s future. It’s an okay PPV at best. Undercard really needed some work and the main events were passable…but that’s it. Final Grade: C Edited by RDT, Mar 1 2014, 02:18 AM.

what you said about foreshadowing was great. I think part of WCW's problem was they got too crowded at the top. They focused on bringing in big names, and no one wanted to job for anyone. I loved the World War 3 idea, but it always seemed like on of those matches that had a great concept, but execution would never work because there was simply too much going on at once. It would have worked better to have three-thirty man battle royals with a triple threat match at the end of the card. |

Posted Image WWF Survivor Series 1995 November 19, 1995 Landover, MD Background: 1995 was perhaps the worst year in the history of the WWF. Diesel had not been the major drawing champion the WWF needed, although I don’t believe that is really all on him (fighting Sid and Mabel and The British Bulldog on PPV after PPV didn’t help). The overall booking style of the WWF has suddenly become dated, especially with the edgier and at times much better WCW Nitro now on the air. The WWF had a lot of very good to great top talent in 1995: Diesel, Shawn Michaels, Bret Hart, Undertaker, Razor Ramon to name a few, but often times they were wrestling guys not in their league rather than each other (like Razor vs. Dean Douglas, Diesel and Taker vs. Mabel, Bret vs. Jean-Pierre Lafitte). For some reason, WWF tried to create new stars despite having current stars to draw money with. It’s great to create new stars if your current guys are stale, but these guys weren’t. Often times, when these top guys were paired with one another, good results happen, and the evidence is in the main event of this PPV. The Card Here comes Mr. Perfect! I assume he’s doing commentary with Vince. I like Perfect’s commentary, so that’s a plus. Promor video for Bret vs. Diesel. It’s the two time triple crown winner against the man who won the triple crown in one year. Cool facts there. We’ve got a USA theme going, I guess that’s because Landover is right there with Washington DC. The Bodydonnas (Skip, Rad Radford, Tom Pritchard and the 1-2-3 Kid) vs. The Underdogs (Marty Jannetty, Hakushi, Barry Horowitz, and Bob Holly) Wooo Sunny! I like that Tom Pritchard is on this Bodydonna team…since he would be Zip a few months later. I believe the Kid just turned heel by costing Razor Ramon and match with Sid. Kid gets his own entrance with Ted Dibiase. Here comes Razor! Refs send him to the back though. Jannetty and Pritchard start us off. Jannetty owns the entire Bodydonna team to a good response. I am of the opinion that Jannetty could have been a big star had he not been a mess. I didn’t realize Bob Holly had a frankensteiner in his arsenal. I still hate the Modern Day Kamikaze nickname for Hakushi. It also makes me sad that Hakushi is in this match. He was feuding with Bret Hart 5 months ago. The Kid is the biggest heel in this match. Barry Horowitz chant! He hasn’t been tagged in. Bob Holly hits Pritchard with a top rope bodypress and Pritchard is gone. Skip rolls up Holly to even the odds right away. There have been a lot of fun moves in this one. It’s weird that Horowitz is being built up as the big star in this match… I feel like Kid vs. Hakushi would have been a fun match. Kid spin kicks Hakushi in the back of the head, and Rad Radford eliminates him. Barry Horowitz is in! Rad Radford does some pushups, and Horowitz rolls him up in ugly looking fashion for the pin, eliminating him. The Kid nails Horowitz from behind and gets the pin after a legdrop. Down to Skip and Kid vs. Marty Jannetty. Jannetty and Skip are having a nice match here. Top rope powerbomb from Marty to Skip! Down to Jannetty and the Kid. Perfect dropkick to the face of Jannetty. Kid misses a somersault from the top. Here comes Sid! The Bodydonnas win when The Kid last pins Marty Jannetty in 18:45. Jannetty gets the Rocker Dropper, but the Kid gets his foot on the rope. Dibiase distracts the ref, and Sid hangs Marty on the top rope for the Kid to get the pin. Fun match. Great way to showcase a lot of the lower card guys. Too bad only a few would even be employed in six months. Razor Ramon is pretty angry about the end of that match. The wildcard match is later tonight. Faces and heels are mixed in their respective teams. Jim Cornette has Owen Hart and Yokozuna on one side with Dean Douglas and Razor Ramon. Cornette’s Bulldog is on the other side with Sid, HBK and Ahmed Johnson. Bertha Faye, Aja Kong, Tomoko Watanabe and Lioness Asuka vs. Alundra Blayze, Kyoko Inoue, Sakie Hasegawa, and Chaparita Asari Interesting that WCW got all the international male wrestlers, but the WWF got all the women. At least at this point. The women’s division was gone about a month later when Blayze showed up on Nitro with the women’s title. I don’t know who is who to be honest, except for Kong, Blayze and Faye. There’s a giant swing. Eat your heart out Cesaro! Wow skytwister press by Asari. What the fuck that was awesome. Blaze eliminates Asuka with a german suplex. Nice. Wow a chained double underhook suplex by Hasegawa. T-bone suplex on Kong from Hasegawa! Kong eliminates Hasegawa with a suplex. Kong hits a top rope splash takes out Asari. Kong eliminates Inoue with a sitdown splash! We have 3 vs. 1 against Blayze right now. Mike Chioda accidentally counts out Watanabe, but Blayze piledrives her and gets a legit 3 count right after. Bertha Faye was a stupid idea. Blayze hits a german suplex and eliminates Faye! Great action between Kong and Blayze. Standing moonsault from Blazye! Team Faye wins when Kong pins Blayze in 10:01. Brutal swinging backhand from Kong for the win. Great match. Some things got botched, but overall, it was full of action and good spots. Random fact: Roman Reigns was the 2nd person ever to eliminate an entire Survivor Series team this last year. Aja Kong was the first. Fake Bill Clinton! Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Goldust When Bigelow’s pyro goes off the fake Clinton dives for cover. I guess it’s supposed to be funny. I believe this is Bigelow’s last WWF match. Shame that Bigelow didn’t have a bigger 1995. I love these Goldust movie interviews. Goldust was such a tremendous character. You can see Dustin Rhodes’ toughness when he wrestlers, which is a great contrast to what WWE was promoting with Goldust. Goldust’s outfit is not rated PG for sure… Goldust pinned Bam Bam Bigelow in 8:18. Goldust hits a bulldog for the win. Match was 80% Goldust and it was clear why. Bigelow was on his way out and was putting over Goldust. And it did the job. Mr. Bob Backlund confronts the fake Clinton! This actually is funny. The Royals (Jerry Lawler, King Mabel, Hunter Hearst Helmsley, and Isaac Yankem) vs. The Darkside (The Undertaker, Savio Vega, Henry Godwinn and Fatu) The main feud here is Mabel vs. Undertaker. At King of the Ring Mabel pinned Undertaker in one of the worst PPV finishes ever. Mabel and Yokozuna would injure Taker later in 95, breaking his face. Taker’s coming for revenge. Godwinn had been feuding with HHH at the time as well. Hogpen matches or something. Taker is more over than the other 7 men combined. The Phantom of the Opera Undertaker is probably the best look Undertaker has ever had. We have Undertaker, Rikishi, Triple H and Kane in this thing! Fatu and HHH start. I think this is where they figured out how to run down Stone Cold in 4 years. This is Make a Difference Fatu. We are getting a lot of Godwinn-HHH here. This all feels like unnecessary build-up to Taker-Mabel. Vega kicks out of Lawler’s piledriver. A little later we get a Rock Bottom on HHH from Vega! Another piledriver from Lawler to Vega…only Vega no sells and tags in Taker! No one wants to tag in for Lawler. Tombstone to Lawler and he’s gone. Tombstone to DDS, he’s gone. HHH tries to escape, but Godwinn threatens to slop him. Leads to an over the top rope chokeslam! Taker pins HHH. Team Darkside wins when Mabel gets counted out at 14:21). Mabel gets some shots in, but Taker sits-up from a belly to belly and a legdrop (which makes the KOTR finish even dumber), then hightails it after that. It’s not bad, but a bit too long for what the result was. If you thought Undertaker was levels above all these guys before the match, well, it was certainly booked that way. I don’t think that’s a bad thing though. Vince announced Bulldog vs. Bret/Diesel winner at the December In Your House for the title. Bret interview. Compares himself to Wayne Gretzky. Wonders if he is still the best. The truck stops here! Ok interview, but Bret is bland here. Diesel interview. Says that he has to go through Bret to get the Bulldog. Weird way to look at it. Owen Hart, Yokozuna, Dean Douglas and Razor Ramon vs. The British Bulldog, Ahmed Johnson, Shawn Michaels and Sid Cornette tells the Bulldog he is on his side. Of course, he told Owen and Yoko that earlier. This match is weird. Ramon, HBK and Ahmed are faces. The rest are heels. I assume WWE did it because that’s just how alignments work out at the time. This match does have a lot of storylines intermingled. The Douglas-HBK-Ramon stuff. Cornette being on both sides. Ahmed Johnson slamming Yokozuna on RAW. Also Razor-Sid/Dibiase stuff. Even Sid and Shawn had history in 95. Owen and Shawn start us off. Michaels beats up Cornette for no reason! Mr. Perfect says on commentary that Michaels probably wasn’t hurt and just forfeited the IC title to Douglas last month because he didn’t want to get pinned. I wonder why Perfect said that and how Vince felt about it. Perfect probably said it as a heel commentator and not a shoot comment, but still. Ahmed goes for the slam on Yoko, but no dice. I think it’s a big weird to see Ahmed be the face that gets beat down, but he gets out of it himself with a powerslam to Douglas. Shawn actually did the loading of the boot for Sweet Chin. Thought he didn’t do that till 96. Razor hits his teammate Douglas, and HBK rolls him up for the pin. Bulldog and Owen in there now. They shake hands but then both go for the punch. Nice spot considering they are both sneaky heels. Shawn and Razor now. I feel like this would have been the WWF’s top feud of 1996 if Ramon stayed. Razor’s Edge! Ahmed Johnson saves Razor. Perfect keeps making comments that if you think about them you’d think they were shoot comments on HBK. (“HBK always makes friends with the big guys”) Vince asks who woulda thought that Michaels and Razor would be going at it at the Survivor Series. Um..everyone? They are on opposite teams here. Sid holds Ramon for HBK to hit SCM, but Razor ducks and HBK nails Sid. HBK didn’t seem to care. Ramon pins Sid. Sid powerbombs HBK out of anger. Actually seems justified. Yokozuna looks huge here. Like huge huge. Pearl River Plunge on Owen and he’s gone. It is a cool looking move to be honest. Someone should bring it back. Razor hits the Razor’s Edge on Ahmed, but the Bulldog makes the save. Here comes the Kid, Sid and Dibiase! Their distraction leads to a Bulldog powerslam on Razor for the pin. Ahmed, Bulldog and Shawn vs. Yoko. Team HBK wins when Ahmed Johnson pins Yokozuna in 27:24. Ahmed comes in and slams Yokozuna. The Bulldog actually saves Yoko, but HBK and Ahmed double clothesline him over the top rope. Sweet Chin Music…then a splash from Ahmed for the win. Pretty good match despite the weird team mechanics. Puts Ahmed over for sure. More Fake Clinton. This time he has Sunny on his lap, and he offers her a cabinet position. Lol? WWF Championship-No DQ Diesel© vs. Bret Hart Bret and Diesel each take a turnbuckle off the corners of the ring. The match was built up as the powerful Diesel vs. the wrestler Hart. Diesel starts with all power moves. At Rumble 95, Bret was the aggressor to keep Diesel as a face. It’s clear that this match is the exact opposite. Diesel absolutely destroys Bret early on and Bret gets the sympathy. It made the Diesel heel turn a lot easier to do. Chair shot from Diesel to Bret. This has been all Diesel. Bret bites Diesel and rakes him in the face a few times. Normally heel moves…but Bret makes use of them as ‘a survive at all costs’ kinda sequence, and it works. Bret vs. Diesel was basically made for Bret Hart’s attack the legs offense. Figure Four! Wooo! Bret ties Diesel’s leg to the ringpost. This is the only part of the match that feels a bit out of place, although the spot itself is creative. See, now Bret using the chair feels justified, since Diesel used it earlier. Bret uses the back of the chair instead of the seating part. I wonder if that was a mistake. People used to joke that Diesel only had 2 moves and one was the Sidewalk Slam. Yeah…but it was one of the best Sidewalk Slams in wrestling. Diesel is really selling the knee, which is great storytelling. In one of the best spots of pre-attitude WWF, Bret gets on the ring apron and Diesel shoves him off…sending Bret through the announcer’s desk! It’s the first time we see that happen in WWF history I believe, and the way Bret hits just looks like it killed him. Bret Hart pins Diesel in 24:54 to win the title. Diesel is about to finish off the lifeless Hart. Even his jackknife attempt doesn’t happen as Bret collapses. Diesel picks him up…and Bret surprises with a small package, 1…2…3! An enraged Diesel jackknifes Bret twice and nails some referees, basically making him a heel (although, not completely until Feburary). Great match, best of Diesel’s career. Bret and Diesel had such great chemistry. They put over Diesel snapping after the event video package. Survivor Series 95 is an interesting event. All of the matches accomplish something and range from average to good. The opener had some good wrestling, even if the Barry Horowitz story is a little misplaced. Kid stuff though was good. Women’s Survivor Series match was very good. Too bad the division died about 6 weeks later. Bam Bam putting over Goldust is well done. If you are an Undertaker fan, the Darkside vs. Royals match is great. If not, it’s okay, I guess. It further establishes Undertaker, whether he needed it or not. Wildcard match was a little confusing, but still good and helped make Ahmed a star. I would think it was strange that the Bulldog was getting a World title shot after seeing it. Bret vs. Diesel is a great match, and a great culmination of Bret’s story in 1994 where he lost the title and never got a fair shake to regain it. The reason why Bret vs. Diesel works and nothing else in 1995 does is because you actually believe these two are the top guys in the WWF. Random note: I don’t know how people feel about Mr. Perfect’s commentary. He puts himself over constantly…but I think he’s supposed to as that was his character. I personally don’t mind it. Anyway, you see some traces of the Attitude Era at Survivor Series 95 with Goldust and how Bret vs. Diesel was worked. This is a damn good show and I’m pretty sure the best show the WWF had in 1995. Posted Image WCW Greed March 18, 2001 Jacksonville, FL Background: I think it is well documented that WCW was in deep trouble at this point. Buyrates had plummeted in 2000, and the word plummeted is no exaggeration. The company (smartly, I should mention) was riding on Scott Steiner as a top guy and giving him a lengthy reign. Whether you hate or like Steiner, it was nice to see someone get a steady reign at the top and actually be a new star. Now obviously there were a lot of other problems with Steiner, but this booking was a huge upgrade from the non-stable hot potato the WCW Title went through in 2000. It was too little, too late though. I don’t know if the wrestlers knew at this point, but this would be the very last PPV for World Championship Wrestling. Vince McMahon would buy the company a week later. The Card Tony Schiavone: If it’s professional wrestling, it’s Greed. What does that even mean? Kwee Wee vs. Jason Jett Apparently this is an unadvertised bonus match. Jason Jett kicks Kwee Wee but it’s blocked. Jett backflips out. That was cool. Jett puts on a reverse crab and a surfboard combo move, which was a cool submission. Kwee Wee with the suicide dive that had no chance even if Jason Jett stood in the same place. At least he tried I guess. Jason Jett seems pretty good. Standing moonsaults, 180 springboard DDTs (I remember Matt Hardy having that). Not bad. Just quickly looked up if Jason Jett was anyone, apparently he’s EZ Money. How about that. I guess Kwee Wee’s gimmick is his temper? Angry Allan? Top rope powerbomb reversed into a hurricanrana. Funny, I recall EZ Money doing a spot like that in TNA…although I think he was the hurricanrana giver there. Jason Jett pins Kwee Wee in 12:17. Jett hits a suplex where he just drops the guy mid-plex. Pretty cool finisher honestly. Solid match too, even if I can’t take Kwee Wee too seriously. A lot of great spots, mostly from Jett. WCW Cruiserweight Tag Team Championship Tournament Final Rey Mysterio Jr. and Billy Kidman vs. Primetime Elix Skipper and Kid Romeo The idea of the Cruiserweight Tag Title would have been a lot more interesting in the mid 90s. I am surprised Skipper never became a bigger deal. Has a cool entrance where he walks the ropes then backflips in. I hated the Filthy Animals. I hate this half-mask Rey Mysterio is wearing. I wish this version of Rey was just stricken from history. I think it’s weird that all of Billy Kidman’s talent seemed to disappear when WCW did. This has been a solid match so far. Kidman just hiptossed Skipper off the stage into Romeo, then Rey and Kidman both did running dives off the stage. Fun match. Before this match I would have thought Romeo and Skipper were not in Rey and Kidman’s league, but Skipper and Romeo are showing otherwise. Sitout powerbomb from the top is always a great spot from Kidman. I really didn’t understand how Kidman looked washed up 8 months later in the WWF. Rey is taking over. Senton bomb rolls into a suicide dive through the ropes into Primetime! Kidman with the springboard Shooting Star Press to the floor! Kidman-kaze? Whatever, great move. We’re just ignoring the idea of a legal man here I guess. Whatever. Wow, arm trap suplex from Skipper…top rope legdrop from Romeo. Poor Rey! Powerbomb by Rey, top rope splash from Kidman! Skipper saves Romeo! I always loled at Rey doing the Bronco Buster. Kid Romeo and Primetime win the title when Romeo pinned Rey in 13:46. Romeo catches Rey’s springboard moonsault and hits the last kiss, which is a powerslam-brainbuster combo. Very fun match! Great start to this PPV so far! We have Buff Bagwell backstage and he comes into CEO Ric Flair’s office. Jeff Jarrett, Flair and Road Warrior Animal are in there, hyping up how the Magnificent Seven is going to win all their matches and all that stuff. Shawn Stasiak vs. Bam Bam Bigelow Stacy Keibler is so hot. Shawn “The Star” Stasiak. Right. The Mecca of Manhood is another Stasiak nickname. Right. I didn’t even know Bam Bam made it to the end of WCW. I assume he doesn’t care at this point. Stasiak has photos of himself for the fans! In case they forget him. Because they will. Bam Bam still threw dropkicks at this point. Nice. Shawn Stasiak pins Bam Bam Bigelow in 5:55. Stacy throws hairspray to Stasiak and he uses it to blind Bigelow. A neckbreaker leads to the win. Honestly, it wasn’t horrible, but it’s boring and not good either. But, if you are going with Stasiak, then Bam Bam put him over just fine. Stacy makes out with Stasiak. His career highlight I’m sure. Romeo and Skipper are very excited about their title belts. As they should be. Team Canada (Mike Awesome and Lance Storm) vs. Konnan and Hugh Morrus I always mark for the Canadian National Anthem. We don’t get it though as we get the maniacal laughter of Hugh Morrus. Morrus runs in without Konnan to start the match, but Konnan comes in soon thereafter. Konnan tries to break up a Storm pin attempt, but Storm gets up and faces Konnan before he gets there. I don’t remember seeing that before and it was kinda cool. Konnan with the rolling clothesline. That and the Tequila Sunrise are cool moves. Team Canada is beating up on Konnan for most of this match, but it’s not really exciting or anything. Lance Storm clearly misses a dropkick that Konnan sold. Mike Awesome with an awful…awful piledriver on Konnan. Konnan landed on Awesome’s legs. Storm not on his best game here. His top rope splash attempt was clearly mistimed and Konnan got the foot up. Morrus is in. No drama here whatsoever. Mike Awesome and Lance Storm win when Awesome pins Morrus in 11:28. Storm interrupts No Laughing Matter, and Mike Awesome turns that into a running Awesome Bomb for the win. Match was not good. Blown spots and downright boring at times. Storm was disappointing here, and the rest are who they are. Morrus and Konnan just seem like two guys thrown together, and not like a tag team at all. We’re in the Rhodes’ locker room. Dusty ordered burritos! 240 of them! There is gonna be a match between Dusty’s ass and Flair’s face and he’s gonna smell the burritos! That’s coming from one of the best promo men in the history of the business ladies and gentlemen! More of this Bagwell documentary. He’s interviewing US Champ Rick Steiner. I think Rick said the F-word here. Something about Midajah as well. Not notable. Quick Natural Born Thrillas promo. Chuck Palumbo would be Chucky this time next year. WCW Cruiserweight Championship Chavo Guerrero Jr.(c) vs. Sugar Shane Helms That theme song is absolutely awful. God damn. Chavo has a cool remix of Eddie Guerrero’ theme. Chavo Guerrero’s career peaked in 1998. Unless you were a Lt. Loco fan. Some good chain wrestling here. This has been a technical wrestling match with no highflying. Scott Hudson mentions this on commentary. It isn’t bad though. Chavo kinda botches flipping Helms to the outside. This match feels like a match that is happening because all the top Cruisers were unavailable. Chavo with a nice reversal into a sitout Curtain Call. Nice move. Nice block of the Tornado DDT into the Nightmare on Helms Street. Crowd with a boring chant. Weird, because the match was boring earlier on but has picked up. Helms with a frog splash press to the outside on Chavo. Very nice. Shane Helms pins Chavo Guerrero Jr. in 13:57 to win the title. Top rope back suplex is blocked and Chavo goes for a Vertebreaker. Helms reverses and hits the Vertebreaker for the win. Alright match with some good moments. Felt like a poor man’s version of a WCW Cruiserweight Title match. More Bagwell documentary. Flair is mad about what Dusty said. Booker T interview. The US Title has eluded him for 8 long years! This is a former WCW World Champion here. WCW World Tag Team Championship The Natural Born Thrillers (Chuck Palumbo and Sean O’Haire)© vs. Totally Buff (Buff Bagwell and The Total Package Lex Luger) Luger and Bagwell may be my least favorite tag team ever. Luger reminds us that Totally Buff were the ones that ended Bill Goldberg’s WCW career. What a nice thing to do. Now Totally Buff are burying the Tag Champs but saying they don’t know who they and that they are rookies. Sigh. The Natrual Born Thrillers retain the titles with a double pin at 0:54. You know what, that was very well done. Superstar diva heels talk trash about the young champs. Young champs kick ass. What a way to put over the young blood. Sean-ton Bomb is pretty nice. Scott Steiner promo! Page is going down! Wow they are really selling the ass kicking Totally Buff got. They reference the time Bagwell broke his neck three years ago. Ernest Miller vs. Kanyon Apparently Kanyon did a Kanyon Cutter to Ms. Jones, The Cat’s valet. Kanyon goes right after Ms. Jones after a Cat calls Kanyon ugly. Kanyon looks like a demented stalker when he’s close to Ms. Jones. Kanyon with a top rope Rocker Dropper. Not bad. The Cat does some dancing and splits with uppercuts and elbows and stuff. I guess it’s not bad, but it takes away from the seriousness of the match a bit. Kanyon somehow botches a Boston Crab, as the Cat ends up on his side. Kanyon survives the Feliner, which looks a lot like Kofi Kingston’s Trouble in Paradise. Ernest Miller pins Kanyon in 10:31. Ms. Jones tries to kick Kanyon, but he ducks and she knocks down The Cat. Kanyon then grabs Jones by the arm, and she misses a kick. She gets a 2nd kick though, and the Cat hits the Feliner for the win. Kanyon attacks The Cat afterwards, then MIA Smooth or something comes in with a chair and chases off Kanyon. Match was boring and the storyline is not good. I guess it wasn’t horrible overall though. More documentary stuff. Luger and Bagwell arguing! Dusty apparently ate all the burritos and he says he thinks they are down to ass. Seriously what the fuck. WCW US Championship Rick Steiner© vs. Booker T Steiner is beating the crap out of Booker early on. Ugly looking double underhook powerbomb. Still all Steiner. Booker got some punches that had no effect on Steiner. Wow Steiner is no-selling everything here. Backsuplex and Steiner is right back up. This is still all Steiner. Making Booker look horrible. Booker T pinned Rick Steiner in 7:31 to win the title. Booker accidentally takes out the ref, and Steiner hits a German Suplex. No ref for the count. Rick Steiner goes up top, but Shane Douglas nails him in the head with a cast (and Rick lands on his feet!). Booker gets the Book-End for the win. Awful match. Steiner no sold everything and dominated the rest. Booker couldn’t win without help. Terrible. Documentary time. Buff Bagwell has been knocked out! Luger accuses Animal. Dustin Rhodes and Dusty Rhodes vs. Ric Flair and Jeff Jarrett Flair comes out with a shirt full of flowers and dress pants. He says he’s not wrestling and Jarrett will beat them both up by himself. Ref sends Road Warrior Animal to the back. Wasting a lot of time here. It feels weird in 2001 to be chronicling the Rhodes vs. Flair feud over the last 20 years. Jarrett and Dustin start us off. Flair’s in there. Punching and chopping away at Dustin. Flair just lets Dustin tag in Dusty. First thing I think Dusty does is fart. Ugh. Crowd very into Dusty. I think he farts again. I mean seriously. Dusty’s elbows are pretty good though. Jarrett and Flair are doubling teaming Dustin. I guess that makes sense in the context of the match. Dustin gets the tag, Flair vs. Dusty! Bionic Elbow from Dusty…but Jarrett makes the save. Dusty and Dustin Rhodes defeated Ric Flair and Jeff Jarrett when Dustin pinned Flair in 9:58. Finish is botched as Dustin was supposed to take down Flair somehow for the win. It’s not clear how but it looks terrible. Flair needs to kiss Dusty’s ass now. The last thing this PPV needs is Dusty’s ass. Stinkface to Jarrett. Ugh. Ugh. Ugh. On the replay it looked like Dustin was going for an inside cradle, but Flair thought it was something else? Anyway, that match was a bit of a mess. I guess it was to get Dusty a pop? I don’t know. Whatever. WCW World Championship: Falls Count Anywhere Scott Steiner© vs. Diamond Dallas Page The story is Steiner has taken out ever top contender, and all that is left is Page. Not bad honestly. Puts over both. I wonder if Michael Buffer was embarrassed to be a part of this crap at this point. Even though I know he had a heel turn somewhere in 1999, Page is basically the same exact wrestler he was in 1998. Just with shorter hair. In 20 seconds Page had more offense on Scott than Booker T had on Rick. Page is all out on the attack early on. Makes sense within the story, as Page said he was the hunter and not the hunted. Some garbage can action. Steiner then takes a crutch from a fan and nails Page. Page elbow drops Steiner through a table…although the table crumpled slowly. This has been a decent brawl so far. Steiner was a good suplex-type guy. Those suplexes look vicious. This match is better than I expected it to be. A solid brawl. Diamond Cutter! 1….Rick Steiner pulls out the ref. DDP takes out Rick. DDP shoves Scott into Rick and rolls him up…but a near fall only results. Page gets busted open from a shot to the face with the WCW title. Page is busted open badly. Jeez. Steiner Recliner! Page gets to the ropes though. Scott Steiner retains the title when DDP passes out in the Steiner Recliner. For some reason Midajah distracts the ref while Steiner nails Page with a lead pipe (it’s No DQ you know). Second Steiner Recliner ends it. Steiner continually nails Page with the pipe. Really not a bad match, it’s quite okay and better than I thought it would be. Overall, I don’t think this is an awful Pay-Per-View at all. There are some good matches, some bad ones and some average ones. It is a bit sad that this is the last PPV we’d see from WCW. I wanted to put it in C+ range, but you can thank Rick Steiner and Dusty Rhodes’ ass for me having to knock it down a bit. Final Grade: C Edited by RDT, Mar 2 2014, 04:02 AM.

Posted Image ECW One Night Stand June 12, 2005 New York, NY Background: I had mentioned in the December to Dismember review that the 2004 Rise and Fall Documentary was the first step in the revival of ECW. This was step two. The documentary was a huge success. Rob Van Dam reportedly continually pitched the idea of a ECW Pay-Per-View. And here it is. There was a lot of doubt in regards to how good this show would actually be. Would Vince McMahon ruin it? The InVasion was still kinda fresh in some people’s heads. Would Vince throw out a watered down product? A LOT of people thought this was going to be a failure. Like somehow JBL would be the last man standing or something. Storyline wise, Paul Heyman wanted to bring ECW back for a One Night Stand, and Eric Bischoff, arguably the most hated man in ECW history, didn’t want it to happen. There was a lot of real life animosity between Bischoff and Heyman due to how Bischoff would raid ECW’s talent roster in the mid-90s. Of course Bischoff was very defensive about how some actually thought there were times when ECW was the #2 promotion in the world (something Bischoff even provides in the documentary). Nonetheless, Bischoff is the perfect heel for this scenario. On the Smackdown side, JBL was also against the show for the standard reason Jerry Lawler was against ECW in 1997. He didn’t think they were in his league and deserved any TV or PPV time the WWE could provide. Both Raw and Smackdown had threatened to invade One Night Stand. The Card The crowd is electric early on! ECW! ECW! ECW! Here comes Joey Styles! Everyone just seems so happy to be there. “OH MY GOD!” Mick Foley is going to be Joey’s commentating partner tonight. Awesome. A lot better than Schiavone and Hudson. The new ECW intro video package at first doesn’t feel like what ECW is about…but then you realize if ECW ever made it big time this is exactly what it would look like. Lance Storm vs. Chris Jericho Storm of course has the beautiful Dawn Marie with him. I believe Storm had recently retired. Of course, an ECW reunion show with a match vs. Jericho I’m sure was an easy sell. Styles and Foley actually state this this is intended to be Storm’s last match. Impact Players are talked about from Styles and Foley. Will we see Justin Credible later? Jericho comes out dressed as Lionheart Chris Jericho, but has the Y2J music. Good thing that theme owns anyway. Storm and Jericho shake. These guys are best friends afterall. Amazing chain wrestling to start. Favorite was a Jericho monkey flip being countered into a cartwheel from Storm. Dawn gets the “she’s a crack whore” chant. Jericho does a dropkick from the first rope. That just looked cool. Lionheart chant. ECW crowds were great. Lance Storm probably had the best dropkick in the business. Storm even makes a delayed vertical suplex look amazing. Storm jumps to the top rope, when he jumps back (which makes no sense, but whatever), Jericho dropkicks him in the back of the head! No one cares when spots make no sense when they were amazing. Chris Candido chant. He had passed away like a week before this and was Storm’s partner in ECW. Fuck John Cena chant. Because why not. The Calgary Crab! Or the Straight Shooter, whatever you want to call it. Justin Credible and Jason are here! Jericho fights them off. Lance Storm pins Chris Jericho in 7:22. Jericho rolls up Storm, but Storm kicks out and Credible cracks Jericho right in the face! Storm gets the win! Styles says “what a crappy way to win your last match” Match was excellent. I wish it was longer. We get a Gary Wolfe interview…time to reflect on a lot of ECW wrestlers who had passed. Rocco Rock, Bam Bam Terry Gordy, Mike Lockwood (Crash Holly), The Original Sheik, Mike Lozansky, Pitbull Anthony Durante, Big Dick Dudley, Chris Candido all honored. Great video. Yoshihiro Tajiri vs. Super Crazy vs. Little Guido Tajiri has Mikey Whipwreck and The Sinister Minister with him. We are reminded that this is an elimination match. I totally forgot Guido comes out with the whole FBI. JT Smith, Tony Mamaluke, Tracy Smothers, Big Guido. Just awesome. Never understood how Super Crazy was never a bigger deal. Tilt-a-whirl into an armbreaker from Guido to Tajiri, nice. They go into a chain wrestling sequence. The way Super Crazy would nip-up from everything was great. Crazy and Guido end up in the crowd. O DIOS MIOS! Super Crazy does a balcony moonsault onto the FBI! I’m pretty sure that was the moment fans realized this was going to really an ECW show and not a watered down show. FBI interference everywhere. Tajiri mists Guido! Guido gets Whippersnappered from the top! Tajiri pins Guido! It is hard to keep up. Double springboard moonsault! Super Crazy wins when he pins Tajiri in 6:12. Crazy gets the top rope moonsault for the win! Can’t believe that was only 6 minutes. It was an amazing 6 minutes. We get some ECW memories. Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. Psicosis Psicosis takes off the mask to honor the ECW fans. Although the fans actually don’t appreciate it. Rey’s theme does not fit here. They both kinda start off slow, with a small botch in there. Still, it’s good chain wrestling though. I remember people thinking Psicosis was wrestling for a job with the slow downed pace. Suddenly the match kicks into high gear with Rey on the railing and getting hit by a Psycho Guillotine! Psicosis misses a dropkick into the corner and does a violent flip into the mat. Psicosis was so good, shame he also never really got the big push in the WCW Cruiserweight division. Rey does a seated senton into the crowd and Psicosis! 619 did not get a good response. Rey Mysterio Jr. pinned Psicosis in 6:22. Rey hits the West Coast Pop for the win. You can kinda tell that Rey’s style changed a lot since becoming a WWE guy. The match wasn’t bad, it was still pretty good for the most part, but it was missing the flow you’d expect from both of these guys. It didn’t help that the previous two matches were a lot better. Here come the Smackdown Invaders! JBL, Orlando Jordan and Kurt Angle are the leaders here. We get a you suck dick chance. Angle will own them later. Now we get fuck you Smackdown. JBL: “I got a ticket you little Mexican”! Some more ECW memories. Joel Gertner! Kurt Angle and JBL embarrass Gertner. Good heel heat. Angle cuts a promo. ECW fans: You suck dick. Angle: Your mother taught me how! JBL talks about how Madison Square Garden sells out with his name on the marquee. I like JBL, but that’s a stretch. I do think this is one of JBL’s best promos. He buries the ECW fans pretty badly. It’s great. Here comes Rob Van Dam and Bill Alfonso to shut JBL up! RVD is megaover…obviously. RVD points out that he will be shooting from the heart. “Remember when RVD had a vocabulary?” This is RVD’s best ever promo as well. RVD basically explains how much better he was used in ECW than WWE. He’s 100% right. He tells the crowd the idea of an ECW PPV was his. RVD talks about how crushed he was that he injured his leg how it won’t let him wrestle on the show. RVD says the line that missing ONS sucks worse than missing Wrestlemania. I’m sure he means that 100% too. It’s RHYNO! Lights go out…it’s SABU! Great moment! Impromptu match! Rhyno vs. Sabu You got fired chant. Rhyno was fired a few weeks before this show. Sabu with the springboard dive to the outside! Nobody threw a chair into someone’s face like Sabu. Air Sabu in the corner! Triple Jump Moonsault blocked as Rhyno sends Sabu face first into the chair! Ref gets GORED! RVD is back in, nails Rhyno with the chair. Skateboard! Dropkicks the chair in Rhyno’s face! Sabu pinned Rhyno in 6:30. RVD puts Rhyno face first on the table….Arabian Skullcrusher through the table! Fun little brawl, great finish! Foley and Styles steal one another’s lines, which was pretty awesome too. Al Snow and Head promo! Snow blames Head for inviting the Invaders. Lol. More ECW memories. Here comes RAW! “Oh no there’s Coach now I’m scared”. Lol. Chris Benoit vs. Eddie Guerrero Eddie plays rudo. While he’s great at it, I wish for this show he didn’t. There’s an early sequence where Benoit accidentally breaks Eddie’s nose, which I think is the reason this match doesn’t live up to expecations. Let’s go Benoit…Let’s go Eddie...Let’s go Eddie etc…. This match is surprisingly slow, and while it isn’t necessarily bad, it’s disappointing so far. Eddie hits Benoit with a pretty nice chairshot to the back. Very nice top rope superplex by Eddie. Chris Benoit def. Eddie Guerrero by submission in 10:52. Benoit hits a Diving Headbutt, then makes Eddie tap to the Crossface. It was a hard hitting bout and by no means bad, but like Rey-Psicosis there was just something missing in it. Still though, it was good. Gertner’s back! Gertner asks something of Bischoff that he says everyone of ECW has been begging to ask him…”Can I please have a job?!” Hilarious! Masato Tanaka vs. Mike Awesome The best part of this match is Joey Styles trashing Awesome…and JBL rooting him on…because of his betrayal of ECW in 2000. Crazy over the top rope suicide dive from Awesome. Unfortunately Joey Styles utters a line on commentary that became awkward when Awesome committed suicide 18 months later. (It’s a shame he didn’t succeed in taking his own life!) AWESOME BOMB FROM THE APRON THROUGH A TABLE. I think Tanaka is dead. My god! Big top rope splash from Mike Awesome. What hangtime! Absolutely sickening chairshots! Tanaka no sells the first couple, but the third takes him down! Tornado DDT on two chairs by Tanaka! This match is stiff and violent. God damn Tanaka slams a chair on another chair on Awesome’s face…then does the same from the top rope! Top rope chair shot! Awesome is grabbing a table. Top rope Tornado DDT by Tanaka through the table! Awesome Bomb from the top through the rest of the table! Tanaka kicks out! For sure thought it was over there! Mike Awesome pinned Masato Tanaka in 9:52. Awesome hits Tanaka with another Awesome Bomb….from the ring through a table on the floor! Awesome adds a suicide dive over the top and the ref makes the count on the floor! Holy shit what a match. Some of the shots make me cringe, but god damn a great match is a great match. Awesome Awesome Bombs a ref at the end. Here comes Heyman. Some more shootin’ comin’ up. He isn’t crying, he just was smoking a joint with Van Dam! He tells Bischoff that it’s not him at a WCW PPV, that he’s in ECW’s house! Hide your wives, it’s Edge! Matt Freak’in Hardy!…which actually seems to legitimately surprise Edge. To JBL: The only reason you were WWE Champion for a year was because HHH didn’t want to work Tuesdays! This stuff actually may seem tame for someone watching this for the first time in 2014, but at the time, a shoot like this on PPV was a big deal. Remember, this is pre-youtube and pre-twitter. In 2005, this was a great and revolutionary segment. The Dudley Boyz vs. Tommy Dreamer and The Sandman I know WWE Network has blocked out some violent spots in this one. If I remember them I’ll mention them. Oddly, this would be the Dudley Boyz last WWE match. Tommy Dreamer seems so happy to be there. Of course no Enter Sandman on the Network. The entrance is still cool though. Sandman is horribly out of shape…but he would be in amazing shape one year later. The Dudleyz dance to Enter Sandman in the ring. It was a pretty cool vision just overall. IT’S THE BWO! Stevie kick to the Sandman! It’s Kid Kash. He hilariously dumps himself over the top rope. Balls Mahoney and Axl Rotten! Poor Nova gets double chairshotted: “That’s more painful than being Simon Dean on TV!” Kid Kash somersault dives into everyone over the top rope to the outside! Match begins. We get some cheese grater action. Which I thought was edited out, but it’s not! Of course, Dreamer is a bloody mess. Dreamer wears a ladder and does the spinning ladder spot Terry Funk made famous. Now Bubba Dudley gets the cheese grater! The steel tray shots look stiff as fuck. Bubba just dented a chair over Sandman’s head! Holy shit is right. Double Figure Fours is a funny spot here. You know, since the rest of the match had no wrestling whatsoever. Storm and Credible are back! That’s Incredible to the Sandman on Barbed Wire! Francine is here and she low blows Dreamer! Catfight with Francine and Beulah! Dreamer and Beulah double DDT the Dudleyz! Dreamer mocks the WWEDudleyz “WHAT’S UP” gimmick and makes sure D-Von isn’t having kids. Sandman is powerbombed through a table. 3D to Dreamer! Here comes Spike Dudley! Spike is the key to getting a table on fire! The Dudleyz win when Bubba pins Dreamer in 10:52. FLAMING TABLE! Dreamer gets powerbombed though and Bubba gets the pin. Wow. So violent but amazing match! Poor Dreamer! Dudleyz threaten Beulah, but Sandman makes the save…and calls for a beer! Here comes Stone Cold Steve Austin! Huge pop of course. He’s wearing a XFL jersey. Lol. Austin calls for the rest of ECW to come out for a show ending party. Austin holds off on the beer. Austin challenges the Invaders to a fight! We get a We Want Taz chant…and here he comes! Angle vs. Taz showdown… We have a brawl! Taz chokes out Angle! Unfortunately this is where JBL stiffs The Blue Meanie. You can see the Dudleyz pull JBL to safety. Mick Foley brings Eric Bischoff in. Strategically, only WWE guys actually get a hand on Bischoff. First the 3D, then a Benoit flying headbutt, a Rey 619. Bischoff lets out a fuck ECW! Stone Cold Stunner to Bischoff! The Dudleyz dump Bischoff somewhere outside the arena. The ring full of ECW alumni celebrate as the show goes off the air! Last Thoughts What a show, what a fucking show. Every match at minimum would be considered good. Jericho vs. Storm? Excellent. International Three Way Dance? Excellent. Rey vs. Psicosis, alright to good. Sabu vs. Rhyno? Good. Benoit vs. Eddie, alright to good. Awesome vs. Tanaka? Amazing, arguable Match of the Year Candidate. Dudleyz vs. Dreamer/Sandman, great. Everything on this show connected. The history of ECW. The shoots. Even Austin being the man to challenge the Invaders gave ECW legitimacy. Maybe if you didn’t grow up with ECW you don’t understand a lot of this. Afterall, ECW closed its doors 13 years ago and really hadn’t been all that great since 1999. Even so, you’d have to admit this was a very fun and very good show. But if you grew up with ECW, well then, damnit, this show was perfect. It’s a shame 18 months later ECW as we knew it would be dead. This show is great. One of the best Pay-Per-Views ever. Final Grade: A+ |
