Coming Tuesday: The start of the top 10 shows from 2014.

Sunday Night Football (16)

Numbers
One 2nd Place Vote (9)One 4th place vote (7)2013 Ranking: N/A

  • Number of episodes aired in 2014: 19

  • Channel: NBC

Additional Info: Sunday Night Football is essentially what it says: Football on Sunday Night. Originally airing on ESPN, it changed hands to NBC in 2006 and has been among the highest rated shows on TV the past few years. A big advantage for SNF over other football shows is the flex scheduling that is done later in the season as they are able to pick better games to put on if they desire.

"NBC's "Sunday Night Football" is the gold standard of NFL television, no doubt about it" - David Zurawik, Baltimore Sun

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Additional Analysis: There is no denying that people in this country (and others) love Football, and while SNF isn't exactly a "traditional" TV show in the sense, it still counts on this list and the broadcast quality, announcers and quality of games are what separate SNF from MNF and TNF in terms of quality. With Football being the #1 most important entertainment vehicle in the country right now, SNF has become a juggernaut for NBC and with a contract that runs until 2022, it is going nowhere anytime soon.

Community (17)

Numbers
One 3rd Place Vote (8)One 5th Place Vote (6)One 9th Place Vote (2)One 10th Place Vote (1)2013 Ranking: N/A

  • Number of episodes aired in 2014: 13

  • Channel: NBC

Additional Info: Saved as a mid-season replacement for the 2013-2014 TV season, Community season 5 debuted in January and was the last to air on NBC. This season saw the return of creator Dan Harmon after he was fired following season 3, while main cast members Chevy Chase left after season 4 and Donald Glover after the first 5 episodes of 2014. To fill in the gap, Jonathan Banks was featured in 11 episodes this year, while John Oliver was in 7.

Critics Consensus: With Dan Harmon back as its show runner, Community returns with a familiar new energy and more fun, exciting adventures for the Greendale gang. - Rotten Tomatoes

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Additional Analysis: Community was a very popular show among the EBL faithful in 2011 and 2012, finishing 6th and 5th, respectively, before falling out of the top 10 last year due to a down season. It returned this year with Dan Harmon and many feel like it found its creative energy again, and it is no surprise to see it listed on 4 ballots and returning to the top 10 this year. While it did not reach its heights of being in the top 5 from 2012, it still has enough support from EBL that getting back to the top 10 after falling out last year is a significant milestone. Now having moved to Yahoo for season 6 (and losing Yvette Nicole Brown as a cast member), it remains to be seen how 2015 will treat Community, but in 2014 it remained the unique and creative show it has always been (besides the gas leak s4).

Person of Interest (18)

Posted Image

Numbers
One 1st Place Vote (10)One 3rd Place Vote (8)2013 Ranking: 2nd

  • Number of episodes aired in 2014: 22

  • Channel: CBS

Additional Info: 2014 saw Person of Interest's 2nd half of season 3 and 1st half of season 4. The main storyline throughout has been the presence of a 2nd machine named "Samaritan" as that storyline continues into 2015. The same cast returned for s4 and it's held the same timeslot the past 1 1/2 seasons, Tuesdays at 10. The recurring characters of Elias, Control, Hersh, Greer, etc. continue to play major roles.

Critics Consensus: Person of Interest weaves compelling standalone stories into its engrossing serial narrative, and incorporates welcome bursts of humor into its sci-fi mystery core. - Rotten Tomatoes

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Additional Analysis: Person of Interest seems to have fallen out of favor with some in EBL, as it was 2nd last year and falls back to 7th this year, the same place it was in 2012. While I would agree that 2013 was it's peak year, POI remains an intense and thrilling show as it uses case of the week formats with long term storylines effectively. Using a vast array of recurring characters new and old, it continues to make good use of the entire cast from Root to Shaw to Finch, Reese and Fusco. Perhaps no show on TV has a better grasp of how to balance a wide variety of different villains and not make it seem like overkill. It can go from one major villainous organization being destroyed (HR) to another being built up as an even bigger threat (Decima) with no lapse in storytelling. It is one of the few shows to make the top 10 3 years running and I can't see how it won't make it 4 next year.

#10 - Sunday Night Football: Well that as a bit of an anticlimactic entry. I never consider sports as TV shows even if it is a weekly show...shrug. I get why it's allowed and I get why it showed up on people's list at this board in particular, but would've loved to see a show like TWD ( :shifty: ) in this spot.

#9 - Ah Community, the show I probably should've watched but didn't. I'll probably get into it one day in syndication. On an unrelated note, it will be interesting to see how a show on Yahoo performs.

tie #7 - I still hate how I gave up on this show after like 2 episodes. Sigh. If it ever gets on Netflix, it will be a priority for me to watch.

It will probably never be on Netflix now that CBS started their own streaming thing. Also it's distro is WB, and they hate Netflix. The odds are not high

Orphan Black (18)

Numbers
One 1st Place Vote (10)One 3rd Place Vote (8)2013 Ranking: N/A

  • Number of episodes aired in 2014: 10

  • Channel: BBC America

Additional Info: Filmed in Canada but set in America and featuring many British characters, Orphan Black certainly has a mix of ethnicity. Season 2 saw the departure of Michael Mando's "Vic" as a main character while they added Evelyn Brochu's "Delphine" as a main cast member. Of course, Tatiana Maslany added multiple new clones to the collection of characters she plays, bringing the total 13 throughout the shows history (some only mentioned off-screen). Ari Millen was also added as Mark Rollins, a minor character that becomes major as the season goes on.

Critics Consensus: Anchored by Tatiana Maslany's brilliant multi-role performance, Orphan Black is as densely-layered, thought-provoking, and wildly entertaining as ever. - Rotten Tomatoes

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks to Baldwin for contributing to this section

Additional Analysis: If The Nutty Professor or those new Progressive commercials hold a special place in your heart, you'll appreciate the fact that Orphan Black takes this concept of someone acting out multiple parts, and actually does it well. (Disclaimer, if you like that movie or those commercials, you may be the outlier in these results) Orphan Black's storyline itself is quite compelling, but far more compelling is how unique Tatiana Maslany can make her clone characters from each other. This is guaranteed to be the best show you aren't watching. Though only placed on 2 ballots, it was placed highly on both and that enabled it to crack the top 10 list this year. As (hopefully) more eyes start watching it going forward, it's place on this list can go nowhere but up in future years.

The Big Bang Theory (23)

Numbers
One 1st Place Vote (10)One 5th Place Vote (6)One 7th Place Vote (4)One 8th Place Vote (3)2013 Ranking: 5th

  • Number of episodes aired in 2014: 24

  • Channel: CBS

Additional Info: This is the 4th straight year The Big Bang Theory has made the top 10, placing 4th, 4th, and 5th previously. Only Parks & Recreation and BBT have done that. Now in it's 8th season, it remains the #1 watched comedy on TV and was just renewed through season 10, so chances are good for it to make the list in 2015 and 2016 as well. The cast did see one departure in 2014 as the actress who plays Mrs. Wolowitz passed away.

Any chance to see Bob Newhart is a chance that needs to be taken, especially on one of television's smartest shows. - David Hinckley, New York Daily News

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Additional Analysis: The Big Bang Theory is a very polarizing show because it is watched by more people than any other comedy right now, but it also seems to be criticized more than any other as well. Regardless, in the EBL crowd it is clearly well-liked as it was placed on 4 ballots and as mentioned above, it has made the top 10 4 years running. Though I did not include it on my list, I still enjoy the show very much and feel like it's still going great even in season 8. The Big Bang Theory moved back to Mondays in the fall because of TNF but it did not affect its viewership at all and back on Thursdays now, it remains a juggernaut. 2014 saw it nominated for best comedy from the Golden Globes and Emmy's as well as the Critic's Choice Awards, as well as Jim Parsons winning best actor in a comedy series at the Emmy's and Critic's Choice Awards. Love it or hate it, you surely have an opinion on this show and that shows why it is such a relevant show.
