The Concept:

Each month everyone will have the chance to bid on the rights to select list of movie ideas or source materials that are being pitched at the time (source material could range from remakes, comic books, television shows, novels, short stories, etc. Original Screenplay ideas will be presented as well, or if you're feeling creative you can come up with your own!)

For source material work, such as comic book, you will be free to change some titles up as well. (ie. if you purchase the rights to Captain America, you can choose to call the first movie "Captain America: The First Avenger")

As we progress, opportunities to development sequels, prequels and spinoffs will come up as well.

Once a project has been started, it will move through 4 stages (Writing of the Screenplay, Pre-production, Production, & Post Production). Stage length will vary by the type of movie (action movies with lots of special effects will take longer to film than your standard romantic drama, for example). After each stage, you will get the chance to re-write, re-edit, re-shoot based on some feedback - but will add to the costs.

Once the movie is complete, you set the release date and wait to see how it does!

Lather. Rinse. Repeat.

Your goal is to crush your competition as there will be other movie studios out there looking to do the same thing you are!

More to come in terms of how the game play will work - but I'm looking for about 4-5 participants to play the game the first go around to see how it goes. More can join in later.

The commitment: Interaction will be similar to that of the TV Networks game I ran...each month basically will represent a "turn" and during a turn you will have the chance to bid for the projects, making casting decisions, etc.

So...who wants in? As with the TV Networks game, it may not necessarily be first come first serve as I want to make sure I can count on the people I include for this first try.

The Rules:

1. You will each start with $50,000,000. This money will be used to acquire the rights to projects and market your movies. Production costs which will include the salary of any cast/director will not immediately count against your bankroll. If your movie doesn't make enough in revenue to cover your production costs, then the difference will have to come from your bank.

2. Each month will start with the the "Project Selection" phase. You will all be presented with a list of projects that are currently being shopped around. You will have the chance to bid on the ones you want. Bids will be done via PM and the project will go to the highest bidder. In the event two studios offer the same amount - the You can acquire up to 3 projects per month.

3. Projects will each fit into 1 "main" genre (some movies technically crossover, but still will have a MAIN genre). Each has a baseline production cost.

Action ($55M)
Animation ($45M)
Arthouse ($500K)
Comedy ($10M)
Crime ($25M)
Documentary ($5M)
Drama ($20M)
Family ($15M)
Fantasy ($70M)
Horror ($10M)
Musical ($15M)
Romance ($15M)
Science Fiction ($65M)
Thriller ($25M)
War ($55M)
Western ($15M)

4. The four stages of a Project

-Screen Writing: The script is being written. This will take 3 months.

Rewrites: After the screenplay has been written, you will receive some "feedback" on the quality of the script. You can either roll with it, or order a slight rewrite (a $500,000 added to production cost) or a total rewrite ($1.5M added to production cost). A slight rewrite will take 1 more month. A total rewrite will take 3 more months.

-Pre-Production: This is when casting & directing decisions are made and other issues are being ironed out.

Casting: Much like with projects, once it's time to cast - you will be presented with a list of various different actors and actresses available for the roles the film calls for. (Lead Male, Lead Female, Villain, Supporting roles, etc) - along with their salary demands. When you present the role to one of them, you can offer them whatever you like (more or less) - they might counter or want a % of the revenue.

Longer deals: For movies you plan to build franchises around, you can offer an actor a multiple movie deal as well. Some actors may like that...some may not.

Directors: Works very similar to actors.

All talent (actors/actresses/directors) come with certain strengths and weaknesses, and appeal which will factor into how the movie does in the box office.

Once the cast is set - there's still some work to get things set up for filming. This process will take 2 months.

-Production: The movie is actually being filmed. Each genre has its own length of time it will take to shoot. See the spoiler below for how long it will take to complete.

Spoiler: click to toggle

Much like with the screen play stage, you will receive from feedback after production. If you want to re-shoot to try and to try and improve your feedback, you can do so. Slight re-shoot will add $3M to the cost of production and take an additional month. Extensive re-shoot will add $6M and will take an additional 2 months

-Post Production: Once the filming is done, it's time for post-production. This consists of adding the musical score, editting, adding special effects - all that good stuff. Again, length of time for this stage will vary based on genre.

Spoiler: click to toggle

Once again, you will receive feedback and get the chance to make any more edits. Slight edits will add another $1M to the production cost and take another 1 month. Extensive edits will add $2.5M to the production cost and take another 2 months.

-Release: It's been a long road but the time has finally come! Set your final release date (you can set a tentative one earlier in the processes based on an estimate, but issues can certainly arise) and decide how much to spend on marketing! For our purposes, movies will always be released on a Friday to keep it simple.

Release dates: This can be important in how your movie does in the box office. Horror movies might fair better around October. Romantic movies perhaps in February? Big budget action movies in the Summer? It's not the be-all end-all, but it does play a part.

Marketing: You can spend as little or much of your bank account. This comes straight from your bank and is not part of the production cost.

Box Office: You will get to see how much your movie rakes in for each week, including opening weekend. Movies will stay in theaters for 4 months before you get the final box office total. Subtract the production cost to get your final revenue (or loss!) and that is added (or subtracted!) to your bank account.

Factors: There will be a few factors that go into determining the box office success. Part of it will be the early reviews, the actors/talent involved, the time of year, and chance.

I've selected: Bauer, Harmon, CC, and PG as the initial 4 "studios." Once we get things rolling and see how it works, I will add more people as we go. That means zierre, sports_fan, and Streeter will be on the list to be included as we go if they desire.

The only thing I need from Harmon, Bauer, PG, and CC is what they want their studio to be called.
