My friend suggested it would be nice to post this here so here goes... The Quest Chapter 1 Harry gaped at the man. Tall and dark with grey hair cut close, the man was dressed in a tweed suit and had a pronounced Oxford twang. Nevertheless, he was obviously from the Indian subcontinent, and at the moment it seemed just as obvious to Harry that the man was mad. How normal the day had started; classes were over and he had been studying in the Gryffindor common room with Hermione and Ron when a first year student burst in out of breath. "McGonagall says you three are wanted in Dumbledore's office immediately!" he had gasped. "Sit down and catch your breath. We're on our way," Hermione had said, and they had gone up to the Headmaster's office to find this man sitting between Professor McGonagall and Headmaster Dumbledore. "Masters Potter and Weasley and Miss Granger, allow me to introduce an old school chum of mine named Maharashtra Vaideeki. He and I started school at Hogwarts the same year. He went back to India after he completed his seventh year, but we still keep in contact. All too infrequent contact, as it turns out. He has come to us with another prophecy regarding Harry, and this one includes the two of you as well. I'd like him to explain further, but first let us all sit down." As they sat around a table in a corner of the Headmaster's office, Dumbledore poured hot chocolate for all, and indicated with a wave of his hand for Maharashtra Vaideeki to start. "I have had a prophecy in my keeping for several decades, and recent correspondence with my old chum, Albus, has convinced me that it applies to the three of you. So I made the trip up here and after showing it to your Headmaster and your Head of House, they both agree, so we had you brought up to us to listen to it," Maharashtra Vaideeki said in his rolling baritone voice. "I still regret keeping the other prophecy from you, Harry, so I wanted you all to hear this one as soon as possible. You have a decision to make, each of you." Professor McGonagall looked each of them in the eyes, nodded once, and said, "I am sure that you are mature enough to make the best decision, each according to your consciences and beliefs." Maharashtra Vaideeki pulled a scroll of parchment from his robe, and, unrolling it, began to read from it in his distinctive voice. "Though faraway from England you be, you must heed these words from me. When trouble at Hogwarts is battled by children three, a crisis is near to all, including thee." He looked and at each of them in turn. "When Albus told me of your first year exploits recently, I was struck by a Satori, the sudden understanding that comes upon one unawares and changes the way you see things. I knew then that you were the ones spoken and that it was urgent that I bring the prophecy here. It might perhaps have been better if this had happened at the end of your first year rather than the middle of your sixth, but in some ways it is better this way." Harry looked at him sharply. There seemed to be a lot hidden behind that comment, but the old wizard ignored Harry's pointed look and returned his eyes to the parchment. "Two of the children who fight the troubles must journey to this land and the temple of Kama, there to retrieve a holy book. The third, marked by evil, shall wait until he is old enough to understand the book. Once he does he may choose a snake to go through a spiritual journey outlined in the book. If both do this willingly and without either remorse or rancor, then they shall both find their power permanently multiplied threefold. If this is donethe Griffin shall defeat his nemesis and the Snake shall achieve recognition and fame." He looked up at Harry, focusing on his forehead. "Obviously you are the one who was marked by evil." "Yeah, you could say that." Harry gave him a grim smile and fingered his scar. "I guess my 'fame' hasn't reached India yet." He looked to Dumbledore. "What do you think it means, Professor? It sounds like I have to pick a Slytherin to be empowered with me." "That's right, Harry, and I'd like to have a private chat with you before you make any choices, assuming you are all willing to try to grasp this chance for victory." Dumbledore gave each of them a serious glance. "There is no shame in it if you are not up to the challenge. Bearing that in mind however, I would like you to tell me if you are willing to try this. For you two..." he pointed at Ron and Hermione. "...it will mean weeks out of school and extensive travel in a foreign country. Of course, we will do our best to see that you remain safe and sound and return home, but there is some inherent danger to this quest, as there is to all such endeavors. Will you go to India and retrieve this book from the temple of Kama?" "Of course we will, Professor! How could we pass up the chance to ensure Harry's victory?" Hermione loudly affirmed, and Ron nodded vigorously. Professor Dumbledore looked at Harry. "And you, Harry?" "What exactly am I picking a Slytherin for? What will we be required to do?" "We won't know until we get the book, Harry. I confess to having an idea, but I can't be certain until then, so I don't wish to speculate." Harry shrugged and replied, "Well I guess it doesn't matter much. If doing this will help me defeat Voldemort, I'll do it." Maharashtra Vaideeki nodded. "Good. I was hoping you would respond that way. I'll be accompanying you two youngsters to the temple to help protect you. You'll have to find and retrieve the book yourselves, but I can keep you safe while you do it." "Thank you, Sir," Hermione said. "I'm sure any friend of Professor Dumbledore will be able to keep us quite safe." "Indeed, Miss Granger, he is a renowned fighter against the Dark Arts in his homeland." Dumbledore nodded and stroked his beard. "I will have very little to fear with you in his hands." "Oi, what about my safety then?" Ron asked anxiously. "I used the word 'you' in its plural sense, Master Weasley. I'm certain you'll both be very safe." "Oh, that's good to hear," Ron replied with seeming relief. "I was worried for a minute." The Indian wizard chuckled. "Very believable this act of yours. If I hadn't known of your brave exploits I might not have thought humor. You have an excellent wit, Mr. Weasley." He stood and bowed. "I'll leave you to discuss tactics with your friends while I arrange things for our trip. Good day. "He left the room, waving to Dumbledore and McGonagall as he went. "Be packed and ready to leave one week from today. You will need about two weeks worth of clothing and you might want to research climate and culture information before you go. I've arranged for Miss Granger to have access to the restricted section of the Library for the next week. Since I'm quite sure she'd get in there anyway, and she at least shows due care for the books," Dumbledore said, and smiled at them all. Professor McGonagall clapped her hands together and said briskly, "Alright children, you have a lot of planning to do and there is also the Halloween dance tonight. So get along back to your dorms and I'll see you in class tomorrow." "Yes, Professor," they chorused, and left the room. On the way to the Gryffindor common room they ran into Ginny, who was grinning from ear to ear. "Hey guys, guess what? I got asked to the masked ball tonight!" "That's great, Ginny!" Hermione exclaimed. "Who was it?" she asked as she hugged her friend. "Luna!" Ginny cried out excitedly as she hugged her friend. "I'm so happy! I've wanted her ever since I got over that crush on Harry." She looked over at Harry. "No offense meant, Harry." "None taken, Ginny," Harry replied. "I'm glad you are comfortable enough with me to say such thgings and I'm happy you have a date. Now you just have to get your brother to ask Hermione." Harry grinned and dodged a halfhearted swing from Ron. "I was going to ask when we got to the common room," Ron replied red-faced. "Sure you were." Harry laughed. "Apparently, asking Hermione on a date scares you more dragons, giant spiders and old Moldy shorts combined." Harry added their private nickname for Lord Voldemort hoping to break the mood a little. He did not succeed. Ron turned to Hermione. "Hermione?" He was looking pale but determined. "Yes, Ron?" Ron gulped. "Would you…er. Would you be my date to the masked ball?" "I would love to, Ron." She kissed him and started chattering excitedly. "I already have the perfect matching costumes picked out for us." "You do?" Ron stammered. "Yes, I knew that your sister and Harry would be working on you and decided to be optimistic so I planned ahead." "Oh." Ron looked a little worried. "So, what costume did you get me?" As they made their way back towards the Gryffindor common room, Hermione took a hold of Ron’s arm. “I got you a pirate costume, and I’m going as a pirate wench.” She winked naughtily in his direction. “You might even get some booty if you play your cards right.” Then blushed and headed upstairs to get the costume she had gotten him. Ron blushed but grinned. "I'm mad at you two for telling her I like her but I'm also glad you did." Harry snorted. "The least we could do mate. You were driving us both batty with your waffling." Ginny added, "Of course, now we need to Harry paired off." "What?!" Harry cried out. "I don't think I need your help." "Ha! Sauce for the goose Harry!" Ron said and cackled. "If you need any help conspiring, Gin, just let me know." "You can all keep your noses out of my love life." Harry replied but he wondered if maybe she had a point. That awful mess with Cho was two years ago. It was probably time to meet someone new. Still, who could he meet that would be interested in him and not in dating The Boy Who Lived? Harry thought about it as he wandered up to his room to change into his costume. Hermione brought Ron his costume, still blushing faintly and then they each went to their own rooms to change. Some minutes later, all four met up again in the common room, which was filling with costumed Gryffindors. Ron wasn't the only pirate. Parvati Patil dressed as Ann Bonny the Pirate Queen. Hermione was showing some midriff as a pirate wench, and had magically straightened her hair for the night. Ginny was in a fantasy princess gown with an illusionary tiara of precious gems on her head and glass slippers on her feet. "Don't those slippers hurt your feet, Ginny?" Harry asked. He was without his glasses having used a spell to fix his eyesight for the night, and was dressed as a desert sheik. "No, Harry. They only look like glass; they are actually pretty comfortable. Thanks for asking, though. Are you dressed as Lawrence of Arabia?" "No, just a random sheik. That's a good idea, though. Maybe I'll stick with it. Either way I'll be on the lookout for a harem girl, so if you see any let me know, O.K.?" Harry winked at her. "Of course!" Ginny laughed delighted he was going along with her matchmaking plans. "What are friends for?" They left and picked up Luna and Padma at the Ravenclaw common room. Luna was dressed in a muggle suit of men's clothes, including fedora. She looked cute if unusual. Padma was dressed as a ballerina. The twins were also dateless for the night. Harry had dated one of the twins and had the occasional fantasy about the twins but he didn't think either of them was right for him. Harry wondered if this new prophecy would require him to date a Slytherin. Harry swore Ginny, Luna, and the twins to secrecy as members of the D.A. and then then told them of the new prophecy in whispers. Hermione asked the twins to fill her in on what they knew of India over the next week. "We could but we are not sure it will help much." Parvati said. "We can at least tell you some great places to visit and which native foods you should try and which you should avoid." Padma added. They traded a look and wondered if they should mention what they knew about the Hindu temple in which this book was supposed to be hidden. It might not be what they thought but if it was Hermione should be warned as they were certain she wouldn't be able to resist peeking inside the book and Ron might very well be peering over her shoulder as she did so. They would discuss it together and decide what to say. |

CHAPTER TWO Harry had been dancing for awhile when he saw Ginny trying to get his attention. He excused himelf to his dance partner and went over to where Ginny sat with Luna. "How are you ladies? How is your evening going?" "We're doing fine Harry." Ginny said and both girls giggled. "We've even spotted a harem girl for you O Sheik." Luna nodded and pointed with a grin. Harry followed the pointing finger and saw a lovely blond in harem pants and a sequined halter top with a gauzy veil and curled toe shoes completing the costume. He didn't recognize her at all. He turned perplexed to the girls, "Wow, thanks. Good spotting ladies. I wonder how I've missed her all this time." "Well she has filled out a lot this year, maybe that's why you never noticed her before?" Luna said, her usual dreamy smile sharpening, "No breasts no notice Harry?" "Of course not!" Harry started indignantly. "Relax Harry! We're just kidding with you," Ginny said. Both girls were grinning at him now. "What house is she in? What's her name?" Harry asked eagerly but they just smiled wider. "Ok, what's the joke?" Both looked at him with wide eyes, "Would we play a joke on the great Harry Potter?" "Oh of course not." Harry replied sarcastically. "You know maybe I'd better not go over there, I don't like those grins you two are wearing. "Your loss then. You asked for a beautiful harem girl and we found one for you. The rest is up to you." Harry looked back to the dance floor and watched her dance with a tall ravenclaw. She looked to be about five foot nine or ten, a little shorter than he but not much. She moved with smooth grace. Obviously one with the music and enjoying it thoroughly. The boy looked stiff and awkward next to her and she was clearly paying him little attention.. Harry made up his mind and headed her way. He tapped the boy on the shoulder, "Do you mind if I cut in?" The Ravenclaw snarled a "Yes!" in reply but the girl cried out, "My sheik, you've come for me!" Then she giggled. Harry moved in front of the other boy and the veiled girl flowed into his arms. The song ended and he looked into her jade green eyes, trying to place her. The next song was Blue Tango. Many students sat it out, their skills not up to the sexy classic. Harry had no trouble with it. He'd kept on learning to dance since that first Yule Ball in 4th year and his skill showed. His partner and he moved across the dance floor as one. They each recognized the other's skill and brought forth their best efforts. They were getting appreciative looks from those sitting this one out and were easily the best couple on the floor. Back at the table Ginny turned to Luna, "You'd think they'd been dancing together for years." She said wonderingly. Luna grinned back, "Unless you knew who they were." Ginny looked suddenly worried, "I hope we're doing the right thing. I'd hate to see him get his heart broken again." "She's the best choice given the prophecy. Any other choice would be worse." Luna replied. "You're right. I guess we'll just have to hope for the best." She forced a smile, "They do look good together on the dance floor." Midnight is fast approaching, the time when everyone is supposed to unmask for the last dance. Harry has been dancing with the same partner all night but hasn't been able to figure out who she is. They are dancing cheek to cheek and he whispers, "Midnight approaches." Her breath tickles him as she replies. "So? Does the sheik become a pumpkin at midnight?" "No," He chuckles, "but at midnight you will have to take off your veil and then maybe I'll know who you are." His chuckles make shivers go down her spine unbeknownst to him. Then she pulls back a little and her green eyes stare into his. "You haven't learned anything about me while dancing with me? After tonight I feel I know you, will the sight of my face change things that much? If my face is ugly will you push me away and go?" "Of course not!" Harry exclaimed, "I just can't believe I've spent five and a half years with you and never noticed you." She pressed herself against him and giggled, knowing exactly how it affected him. "Well I must have a boring, unremarkable face then so why do you want to see it?" Harry started to answer but just then 12 large bongs rang through the Great Hall to tell everyone it was midnight. He waited it out then said, "I won't push you away no matter what your face looks like. I'd like a date to get to know more of you than just your great skill at dance." "Very well then," she replied, "we have a date. Take me to Hogsmeade this weekend?" "Sure! Will you unmask now?" Harry asked. "I guess I have to sometime, and if you can't trust the word of Harry Potter what can you trust?" She took off the veil and waited for him to recognize her. She felt some mischievous amusement but some nervousness too. Harry was speechless, there was nothing wrong with her face! It was beautiful. A moment later it hit him who she was. "You're Daphne Greengrass." She been in his potions class for his first five years in Hogwarts. She was a Slytherin. She saw the realization hit him and heard disappointment in his voice. "Well ? Is the word of Harry Potter still good or are you so biased against my house that you push me away after all?" As he stood there blinking in confusion the band started to play for the last dance of the night. "Will you give me at least the last dance Harry?" Daphne asked. Harry nodded woodenly and she flowed gracefully into his arms for one more dance. He put his mind on hold and just danced. 'I'll worry about it tomorrow,' he thought. The next day was Saturday but instead of staying in bad as long as usual he hurried to the great hall to catch Ginny at breakfast before Ron or Hermione got there. Ginny ate early on Saturdays because she went jogging before the day got too warm. Once at the table he sat directly across from Ginny and asked if she knew who she was setting him up with. "Yes, I knew. She's not a bad person and she never wore those awful badges ferretboy made. She's been nice to me and Luna and she's actually taken Muggle studies." She paused to eat some breakfast and then looked back up at Harry. "I hope you aren't too mad." "No, I actually had a nice time." Harry pauses as a thought occurs to him, "You didn't tell her to wear that harem girl outfit did you?" "No that was just fate. We both recognized her though. We usually see her in the library late at night and we've both noticed she seems a bit lonely." Ginny flashed him a quick grin, "Not to mention that she's quite lovely too. I guess we both have a thing for blondes huh?" "Yeah I guess we do." Harry replied smiling back. "But I can foresee all sorts of nasty gossip coming from this." He stopped smiling and frowned for a moment then shrugged. "Well it wouldn't be a year at Hogwarts without gossip about Harry Potter right? I sure I can manage to survive." He smiled wryly at Ginny and got a grin in return. "That's the spirit Harry! Follow your heart and ignore the petty criticisms of small minds." She turned back to her food then as Hermione and Ron came up and sat on either side of him. Harry patted her hand before turning to his own food, suddenly eager to eat it with a renewed apetite. "Well it looks like you're back to normal Harry. Good! You were in a fearful daze last night. I was a bit worried about you mate." Ron shook his head, "You're lucky you made it up the stairs alright. What happened? That girl you danced with couldn't have been that good looking." Hermione smiled, "Maybe he fell in love. It looked like love to me." Ginny snickered, "Is that it Harry? Am I that good a matchmaker?" "Hey! We just made a date for Hogsmeade. I am not in love with her!" He blushed and grinned, "You are a pretty good matchmaker though. I'm looking forward to taking her around today. Even with the snide comments I'm sure to hear." |

Chapter Three Has not been beta'ed yet so may stink but it's been so long I figured I'd post as soon as possible. Harry wandered alone through Hogsmeade. He had wanted to walk there with Daphne but she disagreed and he supposed she was right. It would needlessly complicate a first date. Hermione and Ron had to go get extra DADA practice with Remus in the shrieking shack anyway so he had no trouble slipping away. He had agreed to meet Daphne in an out of the way alley. He was a little worried about meeting Malfoy or some other enemy while walking alone so he was moving as silently as he knew how and staying in shadow. As he neared the meeting place he heard something that surprised him, a cell phone ringing. "Hi Mom, why are you calling?" Harry froze at the sound of Daphne's voice. He knew he should either back away or step into the light but curiosity held him where he was. "Because you never call 'Just to talk'. It's always for specific reason." There was a pause then she spoke again. "How did you hear about that? I know you have spies in Slytherin but I thought I had spotten them all and ..." As she trailed off at an obvious interruption Harry wondered if maybe Daphne's mom was as bad as his aunt and uncle. After listening for a bit Daphne actually hissed, "Malfoy told you? He just can't help telling tales can he? Well yes mum. Ferret boy was right. I spent the half party dancing with Harry Potter and we even have a date today." Another pause followed by scornful laughter, "Oh yes? He defeated the Dark Lord before he could toddle, he stopped him again at eleven, killed a basilisk at twelve with Godric Gryffindor's sword, is the youngest person to ever win the TriWizard Cup, broke into the Dept of Mysteries and fought off Voldemort's possession and you think he's going to scared by you? I highly doubt it." A ladylike snort and she continued, "If you had sense you'd be distancing yourself from people like the Malfoys. Not listening to their gossip." Harry's guilt won out over his curiosity and he stepped into the light. "I have to go now mom he's here for our date. Bye" She hung up and turned to Harry. "I didn't hear anything..." Harry started and heard her snort again. "Oh please. I'm not a Hufflepuff. I know you were listening in, it's only human. What did you hear?" "Your mom sounds like my aunt. Only worried about appearances and status and nasty with it. My Uncle is the same really only he adds bigoted idiocy." "My dad was a Muggle but he was a Baron of long standing so I will inherit when I am 18 as his only heir and mom's family considered him worthy enough." Her pretty face twists in a sneer. "The oldest Baronies are inherited by the oldest child regardless of gender but never by the spouse. A fact that surprised Mom, who of course never paid much attention to Muggle laws. Since I will inherit both the title and the money she needs me and that twists her knickers." She smiled, "An expression that would horrify her I assure you." Harry smiled back, "I can only imagine what Aunt Petunia would think of it. I'm sorry about your dad. Mine is gone too." Daphne grabbed his hands, "He was a good man. I'm sure yours was too." A sly smile crossed her face, "I'm not that Chang girl either so I refuse to spend our date crying and moaning about the past and you can't either. Come on, I want to show you my favorite place to eat." She let go of one hand and pulled on the other. Harry let her lead him through shadowed ways to a black building with a single word written above the door. "Discretion? What do they sell here?" "Privacy. No one can track you through here. It's a way to avoid my mother's spies. Follow me and don't talk or look too closely at anyone." She needn't have bothered to tell me, Harry thought. He couldn't really see anything but her and the floor. Everything else was fuzzy and indistinct as if he were walking in a heavy fog that started a few feet away. Even their footsteps were muffled. When Daphne stopped so did he and briefly they waited. "May I help you?" The man suddenly appeared from the almost fog was serious looking and wearing a sober grey suit. "Paris." Daphne said it clearly and handed over a small bag that clinked. "This way." The man nodded and walked away. They followed him to a blank black wooden door. He pointed to it and said, "Paris." Then he vanished back into the haze. Daphne opened the door and gave Harry a little push. After following him through she closed the door. She enjoyed the shock on Harry's face as he gaped at the City of Lights. "We're in Paris!" He turned to her. "Is this really Paris?" "Yes. Now we can eat, stroll, or talk without prying eyes and wagging tongues back home." Daphne smiled. She liked watching his surprise, seeing the city through his eyes was an unexpected rush. "Beautiful isn't it? I think it may be my favorite city." "Yes, it is beautiful. Almost as beautiful as you." He blushed. "Thank you Harry. The restaurant I want is not far." She grabbed his hand. "Come on. I'll show you all my favorite places to visit." "Ok, you're in charge today. But next time, if there is one, I want to decide where we go." "Fair enough Harry." Daphne agreed as she hailed a cab. "Next time, if there is one, you are in charge." The cab arrived and she grabbed his hand and pulled him inside. "Today we are going to all my favorite places." To the driver she said, "Le Cirque please." The driver nodded and took taking them on a fast paced ride to a very expensive looking building. "Le Cirque." he said and stopped. Harry was shocked to see Daphne carried Muggle money with her. She smiled after she paid registering her surprise. "Next time you are buying so don't forget to bring the appropiate currency with you." |
