Blade of the Immortal

I just started to read this series again. It used to run in the first Manga magazine that came to Norway, but it didn't last very long, so I only got to read a few chapters of Blade. But a few months ago they started to give out Blade of the Immortal as manga books, and we have now reached volume 3.

I really like this manga, even though it's quite bloody and gory, not what I usually have on my top 10 lists. But the story seems good, as I said, I have only read the 3 first volumes so far, so I don't know if it will stay this good till the end. And you just have to love Manji, the main character. He tries to act like a confident I-don't-care-about-anyone-other-than-myself, but you quickly see he has his softer sides. And he is funny. XD
The art is a chapter for itself. Hiroaki Samura draws in a very sketchy way, but he still manages to include some amazing details and make it all look very realistic. And in each chapter he includes some amazing full-page artwork, which I really like :). Too bad I couldn't find any scans of them..

The story:
(copied from wikipedia because I'm lazy! :P)
Blade of the Immortal follows the deeds of Manji, a skilled samurai who has a decisive advantage: no wound can kill him, except for a rare poison. In the past, his criminal actions led to the death of 100 other samurai (including his sister's husband). He becomes immortal at the hand of a 800-year-old nun named Yaobikuni, and is compelled by the death of his sister to accept the quest that will end his agelessness. He has vowed to make amends by killing 1000 evil men, and until he does Manji will be kept alive by kessen-chu ('sacred bloodworms'), remarkable creatures that allow him to survive nearly any injury and reattach severed limbs even after hours of separation. They work by sacrificing themselves to seal the wound - they're worms that were bred to be as close in their chemical and physical make-up to humans as you can get without being human. They cannot handle regrowth on a large scale, but, for example, can reattach a severed limb or seal a hole in the brain.

Manji crosses paths with a young girl named Asano Rin and promises to help her avenge her parents, who were killed by a cadre of master swordsmen led by Anotsu Kagehisa. Anotsu killed Rin's father and his entire dôjô, making them a family of outcasts. Anotsu's quest is to gather other outcasts and form an extremely powerful new dojo, the Ittô-ryû (a school teaching any technique that wins, no matter how exotic or underhanded), and has started taking over and destroying other dojos.

Ah, I'm glad you posted those.
I've heard of this series being praised for it's sketchy pencil-work ages ago and had been wondering what it looked like. Quite interesting to see manga being drawn and shaded with pencil techniques rather than screen-toning. That's some very nice art there.

Hehe, you're welcome ^^.
Yeah, it is, he must spend so much more time than other artists to finish his works.. But it is so worth it! It's almost so good that you would continue reading the story even though you didn't like it, just for the sake of looking at the drawings :).

Well, I think it is ^^. But I assume not everyone would like all the blood and the dismembered limbs XD.

*lol* Well, I'm buying it now, so no problem. Well, there is one.. you have to learn norwegian before you can start reading it :P

Oh! And I don't think anyone has read the whole series, according to wikipedia it's still being written ^^
