I was told the other day that Michael Crichton has recently passed away at the age of 66 after losing a fight with cancer.
It was quite surprising and sad news.

He wrote thought-provoking books which touched on many near-future '' what ifs? '' of science, writing about such topics as the possibility of time-travel ( Time-Line ), the possibile consequences of contact with unknown alien technology ( Sphere ), the dangers of mind contol ( Terminal Man ) and perhaps most famously the notion of being able to bring back dinosaurs via their DNA ( Jurassic Park ).

So my respects to Michael Crichton.
Has anyone else read any of his novels?
And what do you think of them?

He was an amazing genius and such a phenomenal writer. I have read a lot of his books including the ones you have mentioned. He also was the driving force behind ER one of the longest running American shows. His is a profound loss.

I have been a massive fan of Michael Crichton for a long time. The sheer depth of the science involved in so many of his novels never ceased to amaze me and it was a terrible blow to hear of his death.

I started with Jurassic Park AFTER seeing the movie (obviously, the book was better!) and followed this up with several others, each as deep, intelligent and thought-provoking as the last. The fact that a lot of the "science fiction" was based on REAL research was phenomenal.

I'm sad to see him go. He will be sorely missed.
