Not only do you not use the other two starters, Torchic being rather interesting, but there are dozens upon dozens of gorgeous water types in the region. I mean, you could have Starmie, Kingdra, Lanturn, Walrein, Milotic, Crawdaunt, and so many more! Not to mention, just like in the Kanto games, the water type is the easiest to start with in Hoenn, because of frst rock, and then by gym three it may well have evolved to part ground, and... ...Although I have just remembered it's actually grass that's easieast to start with in Kanto... Still, waters pretty damn good. Then gym four you get fire...etc...
