So, obviously, I pre-ordered with GAME to get double reward points and the Ho-oh figure. But, since the shop was closed by the time I got there on Monday when I went in so I did so online. Because they have to GUARANTEE that, unless there are unforeseen problems with delivery, they'll get it to you by release day, they have to post it several days early, to cut a long story short, the same thing that happened with my DVD of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire that I pre-ordered from Play.com a few years ago has happened...

I HAVE HEART GOLD EARLY!!!

Only, now my conscience is telling me to wait until tomorrow to start playing it, but...how do I resist!? I've been waiting for this day since I first heard about Fire Red!

Still, initial thoughts: HOLY CRAP THE BOX IS GORGEOUS! I knew it would still have the ordinary plastic DS case because I saw it on Sunday at the event, and I knew there'd be a card box around that for the PokéWalker, but it's some cheap crap, it's actually nice cardboard. It's just nice to feel...

And then you open up the case and get that new game smell....mmmm!

Well, I've got to get a Phanpy and Murkrow egg to trade to it before I start it...maybe this'll mean I'll be able to get far enough to catch Lapras in Union Cave tomorrow...

Lucky little so and so.

Why did I not preorder it? Why did I ignore the assistant every time he asked me if there were any games I wanted to preorder and just say 'no' blankly.

You didn't preorder!? I mean, never mind the bonus reward points, what about the gorgeous figurine! (My Ho-oh will incidentally feature in a vlog about the game tomorrow)

Heart Gold

Before I start, just the briefest of anecdotes; I mentioned to my Mum that these were remakes of Gold and Silver, and that Silver was my first game and SHE REMEMBERED. My Mum probably knows of Pikachu and that's it (ok, so she was the one who told me that Pokémon is short for Pocket Monsters, but she just worked that out), no other Pokémon knowledge, she has nothing to do with it. Yet she remember my first game. Love it.

So, I've just reached the Union Cave Pokémon Centre, here's my progress & thoughts so far.

Ok, the intro is so gorgeous, and impressive. When the copyright's and Game Freak logos appear, you hear a gong, immediately you know you're playing the king of the series.

It's just so...so beautiful!!!! The menu layout is fantastic, and I love that you no longer need to hold down B to run, having an option for it instead.

Why exactly is Lyra in the game? Her role's a bit pointless. She slows things down a bit, and then her Dad makes you feel like crap for not having a Pokémon when she already does, and you wonder why your Mum can't afford one. Makes you feel like white trash.

So, obviously I chose Totodile. I then raised it exclusively until I caught a Pidgey & Sentret, trading them to my Platinum for Murkrow and Phanpy eggs. I hatched the eggs before facing Falkner and raised them a bit in the gym. Totodile was Level 14, he completely slaughtered Falkner. Inexplicably, when you enter his gym you go on a lift way up high, but then the layout is identical to GSC, except you can now walk around his gym trainers if you choose.

I've played around in the Ruins of Alph. Remember those puzzles, to unlock Unown? Well, they're a hell of a lot simpler now. You have only four pieces to place in, the other 12 are done for you. You have to rotate some of them by tapping, but that's it. Not certain whether that's good or bad...

When you beat "Passerby Boy", AKA Silver, formerly known in GSC as ??? at that point, afterwards he drops his Trainer Card, and you see his name - obviously the game doesn't say it, you still choose, but that's supposedly how you find out. At that point I knew there'd be kids making the same mistake I did when I first played Silver. I saw "???" and assumed his name must be three letters. So most names I gave him for a long time were three-lettered...Doh. But now, kids will be thinking, "What!? I didn't see! I missed it!"

Love how all the NPCs have running shoes.

Caught a Mareep, traded it to Platinum for Pikachu-Coloured Pichu. Gave PCP Pokérus first, so now my party have it.

Other than that, not much to say really, so far. OOH! I LOVE the new look Pokémon Centres. Rather than having a seperate upper floor, the upstairs is now a balcony to look down over.

Only thing I wish I could change though, I wish the Pokémon walking with you didn't have to be the first in the party; I wish you could choose any in the party.

My team eventually will include Yanmega, Stantler and Lapras. And now, if I hope to catch that Lapras tomorrow, I'd better hurry!

Another quick anecdote to close; you realise the most recent main series handheld game that isn't compatible with HGSS is Crystal?! When Ruby & Sapphire came out, people were upset they didn't have backwards compatibility with the Johto games. Now the Johto games have backwards compatibility with Ruby & Sapphire!

On that note, I told my Step-Brother about my youtube page, and he told his friends. They're now asking me to make a video (just the one, they expect me to be able to cover it all in one ten-minute video) walkthrough for Ruby. Why would I make a video for a game that's eight years old when a brand new one is out!?

The PokéWalker

Guys, seriously, if you want to use the PokéWalker at all, START NOW! It's gorgeous and brilliant and everything, but Nintendo expects you to have it on your person, with a Pokémon on a route ALL THE TIME. Just It's something like 300 steps towards 20 Watts. Ok, so to use the Itemfinder is only 3 Watts, and the PokéRadar is 10, but some of the later routes to unlock cost 10,000! And it's not like those old toys like digivices where you could just shake it; you seriously NEED to walk. Get a Pokémon on yours ASAP!

Anecdote time: PokéWalkers are obviously designed to look like Poké Balls, but there's more to it than that; they clip onto your belt (if you've got a screwdriver to screw it into the clip), the same as Poké Balls do in the anime. They're also exactly the same size as Poké Balls are when miniaturised (which is how you'd have them when clipped on your belt). The designers behind PokéWalkers actually want to just walk around with six clipped on at once! But there you go, PokéWalkers are probably the best thing we'll ever get to a Poké Ball.

I also noticed that the more you walk, the more experience points it gets. Is that true?

Yes, Blue... all five Kimono Girls are there. You face them after you get 8 badges. The first one is Umbreon at Level 38 I believe.

I have gotten all 16 badges, captured Ho-Oh, Lugia, Suicune, Entei, and Raikou. I just need to train and beat Red to a pulp. Pikachu is at Level 88 in that game... :O

To be honest, I don't use Game enough to be bothered about the points.

Psyduck isn't going to be leaving his home anytime soon...

Back in the original, Red's Pikachu wasn't that hard to beat. Sure, it was at level 81, but it still had a crap defense.

Well, Game haves HG now, so I am going to go and get it after school. Oh, what I have waited for this game. :D
It's one of the games that I have been excited for to play. The others being Brawl and Punch-Out for Wii.

And it will be interesting to test the Pokéwalker. :)

Yes, Yankee, that's one of the main points of the PokéWalker :P

EDIT: Time for my wrap-up of what I've been up to...

Heart Gold

So, I spent HOURS trying to catch a Yanma on Route 35, before giving up and trading one over from Platinum...but that's a little ahead of myself...

Found the Headbutt guy, he now operates like the move tutors of Kanto who taught former TM moves. However, this guy offers unlimited service, so I got it for both Totodile and Phanpy. It's a good move, especially that early on.

Lyra shows up again, still pointlessly, to introduce us to the Day Care couple, her grandparents, and I got all three of their numbers (though I don't understand why I didn't have the number of someone who's supposed to be my childhood best friend already). Naturally, you've been seen by adults with a member of the opposite sex who's your age - therefore you must be a couple!

Goldenrod City - the capital of the Pokémon nation! The biggest city in it too. How I love her.

Where'd I go first...underground...not too much to note here really, same as ever...got my first team photo taken, dressed as Team Rocket... One thing that confused was that nobody offered me a coin case. I decided to check out the Game Corner.

Obviously, we all know about the horror that was the Game Corner in Platinum (if you don't, go read my story about it on ff.net). I'd heard about something new there (and just found from Bulbapedia that the new thing is only outside Japan). I was hoping the change might be to correct what happened in Platinum, and I think I'm right...the new game...it's present and I'm addicted! You know longer buy coins, you just try to collect them. Of course, this means you can't just buy loads of coins to get the prizes, but you really don't need to, the game is simple and brilliant!

Once I'd torn myself away from it, where did I go...well, THAT was when I had the debacle with Yanma...so once I'd traded it over I got my radio card (as you need to get that before facing Whitney). Whitney was there. I got the radio card, then went and whooped her butt. At first I was annoyed for her being ditzy and bimboish, as she's both the gym leader of my favourite city, and the basis for one of my characters.

She mentioned something that I was naturally curious about...the Pokéathlon, now open. Went and checked that out, it's gorgeous. Interesting guy who owns it...

Anywho, played some games. It ROCKS! Seriously. Nintendo should make a Pokélympics game (I'd like to remind everyone at this point, in case they ever do, that I did the Pokélympics first! It introduced Kyle, Adelie and the Heracross Zord). I mean, If Mario & Sonic can do it... But yeah, they're just fun minigames, ten of them at that, in various orders, that any Pokémon can take part in...you don't NEED to boost any stats for it either, like contests. It's definitely more fun than contests, and though it probably won't, I hope it continues into future games.

Also met Whitney here. She gives you the Pokéathlon outfit. Here I fell in love with her again. :D

Then I...caught a Stantler...used it to destroy Morty, but first I went to see the Kimino Girls...you don't battle them yet, as Yankee's already mentioned briefly, instead you just take care of a Team Rocket Grunt.

Oh, but before that I caught Sudowoodo and got the berry growing thing. Great new feature; you can register TWO key items to be immediately available from the touch screen. Whilst you can't grow as many at once, this is good for me, I'm never able to keep track of berries when they're all over the place, but now they're a single press away.

Burnt Tower, Eusine, Morty, Rival (called him DJ, by the way, the opposite of my JD), whooped him. I like that you can see the legendary dogs through the giant hole now.

Yeah...so, got through all that, beat Morty, then went off to get my Lapras. Met Raikou on the way and I've met Entei since then. Got Lapras...

Erm...ah, Bill! He makes a lovely reference to Hoenn & to Lanette, though he misses out Bebe, which is a shame, but not major... But his appearance here is really unnecessary, doesn't unlock anything new. No time capsule...ooh, just remembered you get his phone number in GSC... I don't know why you would now, but it's worth a look...

Gonna spend some more time at the Pokéathlon and do the Bug Catching Contest tomorrow before continuing on to Olivine.

Incidentally, Whitney says "ain't" at one point, it's very noticeable. She could either be a typical teenage yob, or, much more likely in a kids game, that could be the translators' attempt at making her sound like a farmer. She uses a Miltank, the same as Moo Moo Farm, and whilst in the anime her family simply run a farm near Goldenrod, in Poké Rangers Whitney of the 22nd Century has become related to the owners of the Moo Moo Farm. Could be they're showing this?

The PokéWalker

Took it with me to the shops a few times today. Ok, so the watts do build up pretty quick when you're actually going somewhere. I put my Stantler in there for a bit and it gained a level, not too shabby.

I suspect PokéWalker updates may be somewhat slim...

Then I hit the Game Corner!

Really? An uber legendary, just because it's immediately ready to use? Not only is that a pretty n00bish thing to do, as it shows that you're too lazy and/or too inept to actually raise your own Pokémon, but it means you won't be able to use your whole party at the Battle Frontier.

Sunflora's lovely, but hideously slow and it doesn't have that great a movepool. True, the addition of Earth Power in HGSS is good, but it's not much...if you're just looking for the stats moves that grass types offer, you're better off with something faster, I'd recommend Jumpluff (a heavily underused Pokémon, and a gorgeous one at that, it'd be a great choice). If you want Sunflora's great Special Attack stat, just go for a different type that can learn a good grass move. If you want a bit of both, Victreebel's your best bet.

There's really very little a Miltank can do that Tauros can't. It's nice because it's a Johto Pokémon, but it's not actually that great...

Not too much to say about Heracross...it's a great choice, great stats, great movepool. So long as you don't need any particular moves, that's a good choice.

Nidoqueen's better if you want something defensive (Nintendo always seems to think that females are more defensive and males are more offensive...), but personally I'd always go offensive with Nidoking. That said, whilst he has a great movepool, his stats are just...okay. They're not bad, but nothing particularly special either.

I was about to ask why you didn't plan on having a Pokémon that knows Fly, as I find it's a huge hassle if I try and get something from the Box every time I want to...then I realised, you plan on having Lugia...

Whilst Togetic is nothing special, Togekiss is amazing. You could always evolve it shortly after the Elite Four.

My current team is Croconaw, Murkrow, Phanpy (since I got their eggs & they hatched at the same time, I like to think of those two as twins ^^), Stantler, Lapras and Yanma, although since Yanma is five or six levels higher than the rest of the team I don't use it that much at the moment. The team I'll face the league with is Feraligatr, Murkrow, Donphan, Stantler, Lapras and Yanmega. The team I'll face Red with is Feraligatr, Honchkrow, Donphan, Stantler, Lapras, and Yanmega. Murkrow's so good on it's own I'm not bothered that it won't evolve pre-league.

Ooh, that reminds me, anyone else loving that Red is mentioned by name? Unless I'm VERY much mistaken, that didn't happen this early on in GSC! ...Did it?

You can't give Togetic a Physical move! Togetic's attack stat is HIDEOUS! Honestly, give Togetic Fly and you might as well use Sunflora. Togetic has the same attack stat as Pichu! SKIPLOOM has a better attack stat than that, and anyone would tell you that even Jumpluff can't decently use damaging attacks.

Here's a list of Pokémon (not just in the Johto dex, but generally) that I personally think equate to Pokémon capable of using Fly, and not being a n00b:

Salamence, Dragonite, Honchkrow, Staraptor, Dodrio, Aerodactyl, Flygon, Crobat, Fearow, Swellow, Murkrow, Doduo, Charizard, and at a push, Skarmory, Drifblim and Pidgeot. Anything below that and it's just a waste of a move, especially since it takes two turns.

In case you're wondering, the list is from Bulbapedia's list of Pokémon by base stats, ordered from lowest to highest, then I scrolled up, so it's reverse national dex order among Pokémon with the same stat.

Of course, getting a Pokémon that can decently use Fly and have three more good moves is a whole new challenge.

Togekiss has such a gorgeous movepool, it'd be a shame to waste one of its slots on something it can't use...

EDIT: Hey Yankee, I'm thinking once you and I have worked on our teams a bit more, we should battle. You know, as the last remaining two of the founders of the Corporation, and indeed, the first two. I think it'd be cool. I'll film a commentary on my end (won't be able to film the actual battle...at least, I won't be able to film it well...

Of course, it'd either have to be sometime in the next few weeks, before April 19th when I return to Uni, or not until sometime in June.. What do you think?

Time for today's round-up. Yankee, look up, there's a note for you. Let me know.

Heart Gold

Didn't do as much today. Bug catching contest...nothing to report. Exactly the same as before, which is good. Caught a Syther quickly by putting it to sleep, won first prize.

Spent a lot of time at the Game Corner & Pokéathlon. They're both REALLY GOOD. And the Pokéathlon sets you its own goals; first, to win in all five performances. Second is to have one Pokémon win in all five (harder than it sounds, as few Pokémon have decent stats in all five performance stats). Third is to beat the pre-set scores in each of the events (Pokémon has a high-scores table! WOO!). I haven't managed to beat that task yet, but I will, sooner or later. I chose to come back to it later.

Whilst I was there I started experimenting with Aprijuice. Making that stuff is certainly more interesting than Poffin or Pokéblock; it requires you to actually think rather than complete some mindless mundane rituals. You have to calculate which Apricorns should be added (minimum of five of any colours you can spare) to get the right flavours. You can use it as soon as you like, but the more you walk around, the more the Aprishaker shakes it up and makes it smoother. It also becomes smoother simply over time. Smoothness decreases negative side effects (Aprijuice can lower stats too). But you don't have to worry about getting it perfectly right, because if you can't quite get the flavour, or if you find it doesn't have the right effect on your Pokémon, you can just start over again!

Headed out to Olivine. Stopped off at the Moo Moo Farm. I knew it'd take a few Oran Berries to heal, but seven!? Fortunately I planted a couple yesterday and watered them well... Here's where you get a seals case and a bunch of seals. You get a few more at Olivine.

Met Baoba before heading to Olivine. Exchanged numbers and I know he calls once Amphy is healed, so after I've done that I'll head over to the Safari Zone, get some more experience, as otherwise there are literally no trainers to face between Chuck and Jasmine.

Cleared the Lighthouse, after some difficulty mentioned on the WHYBUTT thread (gotta love that acronym)...

You know who's showing up a LOT? Cameron. Cameron's the guy who takes photos of you and your team, as viewable at the PC. Today he was in the National Park, in the gate between National Park & Pokéathlon dome, outside the Pokéathlon dome, half a dozen other places besides...

The Battle Frontier has a really crappy way of keeping you out. Like so many other features in Pokémon, it's not quite finished yet (the Pokéathlon earlier is another example of this...as are the Magnet Train and S.S Aqua (even though you can't use either without a ticket anyway, so that lame excuse was unnecessary). Anyway, rather than have a guard or something, there's a lone guy (identical to Cameron, incidentally) just stood blocking the entrance, telling you to get in line if you want to wait. He's apparently been in line for weeks, camping out as some strange people do, in order to be first...nobody else is queuing yet, so he's wasted a few weeks.

After that I took some time to actually plan what I wanted my team's eventual moves to be, and you know what I realised? The distribution of TMs in these games SUCKS. Seriously, it's the first MAJOR negative aspect I've found. So many great TMs are either found in Kanto, or else obtained at the Battle Frontier, meaning unless you trade them from Sinnoh, you CAN'T have them through Johto or to face the league with.

Energy Ball, Toxic, Brick Break, X-Scissor, Water Pulse, Shock Wave (both are still given by Misty and Surge...they need new stuff), Rock Slide, Stone Edge...and the elemental beams, ok, I can get those from the Game Corner, sure, but that still means sitting there playing those games for ages! And then the moves that you could trade shards for in Platinum, now THEY need Battle Points too...Seed Bomb, Heat Wave, Superpower, Zen Headbutt, just to name the moves I want for my party!

Bah...I'm gonna see if I can trade for some good moves...of course, thanks to the lousy HM system I'll have to wait until at least Blackthorn to use any of them...

EDIT:

PokéWalker

Walked around with it a bit today, but not much to report. I like that sometimes it finds random free watts or items. I don't like that any time I connect to the DS it takes all the Watts I'd built up automatically.

Just tried using the PokéWalker's Pokéradar (ever think they need more prefixes?) because I realised I'd done over 4000 steps on Noisy Forest. First time was a Bellsprout, rare (although Wobbuffet would have been better...). Pidgey got two critical hits in a row, so naturally it fled (well, it fainted, but according to the PokéWalker that's the same thing). Second time I got a Paras. Two normal hits, then another critical hit! I don't want critical hits when they're just gonna knock out the Pokémon I'm trying to catch! Aargh!

FMP! (F*** my Pokémon, an alternative to FML, I propose we integrate it into our day-to-day vocabularies immediately.)

Well, I got Heart Gold the day it came out.

Currently, I'm at the Slowpoke Well. My team at the moment is Totodile, level 17, Nidoran male, level 14, Mareep, level 14, Togepi, level 8 and Hoothoot, level thirteen. Plus, a Geodude, but that's just for the Rock Smash at the moment.

Probably won't end up being my final team. But, I do like to get a core of Pokemon together at the start of the game that I intend to keep on using throughout. Might end up with Togekiss eventually as my flyer.

I don't know why you're having a go at Surf, Psyduck. It's an awesome move. Probably the most useful attacking HM of the lot, along with Waterfall. Both would be good moves for water types to learn.

Bit underwhelmed with the PokeWalker. Same Pokemon keep on showing up. I'll keep going on with it and post judgement on it later.
