And that's only because you face Brock again later on in the game. Probably.

Interesting note. Growlithe with Flamethrower + Sunny Day + Flash Fire = Enough to damage Ho-oh considerably.

In Hoenn, Swampert is easily the best starter. And probably the best water type in the game. Same with Feraligatr in Johto. And probably Empoleon in Sinnoh. If Kanto didn't have Charizard, then Blastoise would probably be the best one there as well.

No probably about it, that is the reason. It's no coincidence that None of the Johto gyms are the same type as Kanto's.

I do like starting with the water types. Seems to almost be my thing.
Nice to know it's not just me...

Yeah, I knew that. The probably was reflective.

Holy crap. Nidoking's back sprite in battle looks awesome.

Okay, so my Heart Gold journey today...

-Went through Tohjo Falls. Battled a bunch of trainers.
-Evolved both Growlithe and Nidorino. Right in time for Arcanine to learn Extremespeed and Nidoking to learn Earth Power. Add Poison Jab to that repertoire and suddenly my little Nido that I grabbed from the PokeWalker looks more hardily. Like a big old purple Terminator. Arcanine's sprite just looks awesome full stop.
-Made it through Victory Road. Kicked "Jonny's" ass. Six-Nil.
-Trained up. Squad is now Feraligatr level 46, Ampharos level 42, Murkrow level 43, Nidoking level 43, Lickilicky level 41, Arcanine level 41.
-Started my Elite Four challenge. Beat Will. Ampharos learned Signal Beam just in time to introduce Exeggutor to the move. x4 super effective, coconut goes bye bye.
-And then the battery died.

Yeah, I like the water type starters. Might be because it's difficult to get decent water types at the start of the game. Although you could say the same about fire types in Sinnoh.

It's difficult to get decent fire types most of the time. Kanto was incredibly generous to that type...less so in Gen III when Ponyta became more difficult...of course, that was fine come next generation...

Water's good because not only because it's good in the first gym, but because of HMs.

Bongo, I'd personally recommend just a little more training...my team were all 45 before I started seriously on Will.

Why didn't you plug it in? :S Or put it on standby?

Well, I'm not seriously challenging. I used all my nearly all my money on healing items and I'm just trying to get as far as possible. If all my Pokemon faint, then I'll start again stronger and wiser.

But, as it would happen, I've torn through the four of them with little difficulty. Koga's easily the easiest. Whether or not the same will happen with Lance is open to debate. Probably not.

I could have plugged it in, but I decided to go and do something else. 'Kay?

Edit.

Completely proved my own theory wrong against Lance. Bongo 1. Dragon Master 0. Final battle Feraligatr vs Charizard. Just looking around Kanto now. Might challenge gym leaders in the proper order.

Incidentally, anyone know how to finally get Suicune on Heart Gold. Been looking for it, and the thing is elusive.

You know it doesn't just roam like the other two any more, right? After its starring role in Crystal it wouldn't have been fair to return it to a roamer back in Johto games.

So obviously you've set the dogs roaming. Next you need to go to the north of Cianwood Island, where you see it in Crystal, then you battle Eusine. Then you've got to go into that little bit with the Apricorn trees on the peninsula with the middle entrance to Mt Mortar. Then, after you get off the SS Aqua and head into Kanto, it should be on the water at the port. If the game hasn't
recognised you seeing it there, trying running around, it might want you to stand in a specific place.

The next place where you could have missed, I did the first time round, is Route 14. There's really little that's significant here...

Then it's up at Bill's cottage, where Misty has her date. If you defeat it there or run away or whatever, it'll reappear at Burned Tower.

I saw it in Vermillion City after arriving from Johto. I don't think I've seen it on route 14. Might have to check it out, but it's not at Bill's cottage.

What about the legendary birds? Can you get them in Heart Gold. Because I haven't seen them either. Is there something you have to do first. I mean, I think they're in there because you need to have battled Zapdos to get Surge's phone number. I think.

If you saw it getting off the boat but it's not at the cape, it's definitely on Route 14. You have to walk right alongside the far right edge.

The birds are available. Articuno is in the Seafoam Islands, same as RGBYFRLG, which now include the caves as in those games, and the Cinnabar Gym. Until late in the game, though, I believe you can only access the islands from Cinnabar's side, since the route from Fuchsia is blocked off with rocks that are being cleared away... Zapdos will appear outside the Power Plant once you've done all the stuff with getting the part back and got electricity going etc. Moltres is found in Mt Silver.

Obviously you need all the badges to get Moltres, but Serebii says you need them for the other two as well. You might need Rock Climb to access Articuno, and Zapdos might just not appear until you have them all.

I didn't need all Sixteen to get Zapdos.

Yeah, I didn't think I did either...maybe Serebii got all his badges first and just assumed, since it wasn't there when he fixed the generator...

Well, I got Suicune and Zapdos. So, I guess I'll go hunting for some of the others now.

Thanks for the tip anyway. Just for the record, I do have all sixteen badges, so I can't comment.

FINALLY! Wow. Finally beaten Red. Admittedly I haven't been trying for a while. My team were all level 70 - still are. And of course, first thing I've done is get my Charmander and Treecko. Steven's actually kinda mean, he doesn't offer you a Pokémon, he asks you what colour stone you'd pick, given the choice, a red one, green one or blue one (once again saying red should be for Fire, contrasting Nintendo's official choice of "orange"). Then, of course, you get the Hoenn starter matching that stone...I think it would have been better if he'd ask which you'd choose between a ruby, sapphire and emerald...

Anyway, I'm wondering if maybe I should switch my faithful Honchkrow for Charizard... Honchkrow has Night Slash, Fly, Superpower and Heat Wave...so switching would mean I've wasted quite a few shards...

Still, Absol has Night Slash & X-Scissor, and Yanmega has Shadow Ball & Bug Buzz, so another move for Psychics and Ghosts isn't really necessary... Charizard could have Flamethrower, Fly, Thunderpunch...maybe Focus Blast or something...what do you guys think?

Any update on what you did? Personally, I'd have gone for levelling up the Charmander up to a Charizard for the Pokédex and seeing how attached you got to it.
...

So, I caught a Combee today in the national park contest thing. Damn thing turned out to be male, so I can't evolve it. Annoyed. And I didn't even win, when the overall winner had a Wurmple. I'm sure they make the rules up of that thing as they go along.

Although, I have been raising some of my other Pokémon. I've got an Espeon, I've raised a Typhlosion up from an egg hatched Cyndaquil, and I'm currently training a Pikachu that knows Volt Tackle. So, I'm going over to Whirl Islands to look for Luiga. Even though I need to get the Silver Wing from somewhere. I think it's in Pewter City, anyone confirm that?

It is Pewter, the old man.

Well, who said I did anything? I asked what people thought, but nobody bothered replying! Maybe I was waiting, in vain, clearly, for some assistance in my plight!?

Nah, I went with the Char. It's currently Charmeleon and following me around. Which means I'm having to switch it for Honchkrow whenever I want to Fly...fun.

Why didn't you look at it when you battled it? Both for the gender symbol and the little red dot on a female Combee's forehead? As for that Wurmple, it must have been at full health, and the highest level. Guessing nobody had a Scyther or anything? If they did it had very little HP...what level was Combee, and how much HP?

I've gotta get Lugia at some point...
