Well first real chance I've had to post this up on here with work being very crap of late.

Anyway as i usually try and make something new for events we participate in i wanted a new helmet that could be displayed on the recent event at the Space Centre. I plumped for something quick and used pepakura to build a republic commando helmet.

As you can see even though pep gives you a nice base it by no means provided a finish article, it needs hardening <ooer missus> and then smoothing with carbody filler etc and a lot of sanding.

It takes me roughly a day to print cut out score tabs and glue a piece together depending on it's complexity, espeically if it's someone else model and not my own as I know my models and unfolds backwards. After a bit of fibreglass and a little urethane resin I ended up with something I could lay a coat of filler over...Seeing as I only had the best part of a week to get it done I plumped for polyfiller fine as it's a piece of cake to sand and I ended up with this after a quick go with the airbrush

So all in all not bad....and my next project

Yes mate...doesn't turn out too shabby.

the pepakura model is simply super glued together, then a coat or two of polyester resin on the inside and out hardens it...I then lay in fibre glass mat and tissue...The inside of this one was really rough as it was a rush job ,<no more than 3-4 days from start to finish> as it was for the recent dispaly at the NSC...I poured in a batch of easy flo clear polyurethane resin to soften the rough bits a bit and it's a fairly strong piece...As it was a quick job I added polyfiller instead of the usual upol body filler as it's a lot easier to sand

Great work Martin, it looks very good indeed. Heard so much about pepkura and need to have a go at it myself. I currently use Jesmonite resin on most of my scratchbuilds and recommend it if you haven't used it before. It's waterbased with no nasty smells and gives a good 10 to 15mins of working time too. If you wish to purchase some I recommend this site: www.propbuilder.co.uk
