The one thing silicone is good at is...sticking to silicone....You also find that Tin based silicones will inhibt platinum cure silicones and it won't cure....there are ways around that but it's not for the faint hearted.

There's always a nice little caveat about making stuff like this...rigid moulds for flexible products...felxible moulds for rigid products.

Yeah, that'll be a shore 30 <a measure of it's tear strength and elasticity>urethane Mitch uses in the Video. Fibreglass on the suclt would be the way to go...Use a good gelcoat mind to capture the detail and then you can lay down the mat after...Fibreglass moulds are good for several reasons...light weight detail won't deteriorate as quickly as a stone mould <each pull out of a stone mould will erode some of the detail and sometimes the detail coat may delaminate from the rest of the shell> but one of the other reasons is, because you'll bolt the sections together you'll have less of a time seaming the final piece.

oh right i see so you could use the Urethane Rubber option as well then.....when you say lay down a good gel coat is that just resin poured over first before adding the matting after? yeah im trying to move away from the stone moulds but its a new area for me in silicone, gel coats etc kinda scary lol....yeah i find that when i use stone i seal the seam after im happy with the detail on the first pull .....thank you for all this your a fountain of knowledge

You could, personally I wouldn't simply because you have the extra steps of doing a mother or jacket mould to hold it in place and the extra expense inccured there...Fibre glass gel coat and the resinand mat aren't expensive <ort at least don't have to be> and in a pinch you can make your own gel coat from resin and p38 body filler. The gel coat is much like the splash coat on a stone mould and is intended to capture the details of the sculpt. Then you have all the hooha of deciding vent hole placement and injecting the mould

You may find the ink or paint you use has a hard time sticking to the surface.

You could try it....Pigmenting will protect to some degree...but you'll find it dries to a very matte finish

Pretty much mate. the only time I've pigmented anything latex were my Batman Cowls I did a while ago, simply because I wanted a very matte non reflective finish...you'll have to seal the paint job at the end anyway either with a matte sealer or a gloss one...Liquitex do a good one
