So what's the best clay to use for sculping to eventually make a cast from. I've used WED in past, anything else? Thanks Tony Edited by TonyRB, Apr 5 2012, 11:23 AM.

It's horses for courses mate, need more info about what your sculpting and how quick you need it and the level of detail too. I've used WED, normal water based clay, oil based and wax too all have their merits plus you have polymer clays too like super sculpey. Water based is good for organic sculpts as well as getting things done quickly as it blocks out really quick...the downsides are it dries out quickly...it details reasonably well but you have to wait for it to dry out some what to tool it. Oil based clay is fantastic stuff....but not pleasant to work with when it's rock hard, that and the fact you need solvents to really smooth and detail it...Having said that I'll only make mechanical props two ways...Oil based clay sculpt or make it from styrene etc....I hate waterbased clay for mechanical stuff...though you have to be wary of it having sulphur in its makeup as it could prevent some silicones curing when you mould stuff. Wax clay like le beau touche are a nice blend of the two....get the ability to work great sharp details in it without having to resort to dangerous chemicals <well not too much> and it can be blocked out fairly quick, its god for small scale sculpts too like minatures. Polymer clays....bit like wax clay can be worked quickly into shapes...and holds detail quite well, and can be baked in the oven for a finished article...Down side is it's brittle after baking and can be a bit too soft for my tastes. As I said you need the right tool for the job and without knowing what it is can't really say one way or the other. |

Well both would need an armature mate to start with...pretty easy to make too. But seeing as you're job takes you off all over you'd be best to go for something like Chavant NSP <soft> or le beau touche...Not cjheap but you can use it over an over....I love the le beau toche as it really is a pleasure to work with |
