As some of you now know we were as a group working on putting together as far as we are aware the first "screen"'ish accurate dredd costume from the new film...it was touch and go putting it together...My part was to build the Lid and the badge...So first up the lid

Which started out as

you guessed it card...my weapon of choice...why? cos I is skint and it's a really easy and fairly quick medium to work with.

Skinned and looking reasonable

there it is with the dome complete.

The hardest part was not only going to be keeping the dome smooth but the fact that the sides aren't straight up and down...they have a gentle curve to them...So on when the polyfilla

the end result looked not too shabby

This is why I love this hobby, it's from the cardboard/car filler to the finished product progression that always gets me. Love it.

Well I've been working on "accurising" my helmet....it's not something I do often...but I thought I'd have a bash this time...the eyes on my lid <which i actually like with the wider flare> aren't screen accurate so I'll be filling part of the section in and then sanding and refining until they are....I've done a brief mock up too to see how it looks, then thought I'd have a see what the proportions are like with mine compared to the screen costume lid...

Posted Image

The only thing altered are the eye slits and the pic of my lid and chin scaled down...locked the aspect ratio so the proportion didn't alter....pretty chuffed that it's quite close to the original size and shape and actually sits better with the padding in place properly now.

The good thging now that I've been tweaking is that what we saw originally on me as being a bit big...was simply down to rushing the helmet on and not ensuring the padding was straight...now the padding is sorted the lid no longer looks over sized for some one like myself who is only a couple inches shorter than Urban. I will have to sort out a smaller one mind though

Couple of inches shorter my arse ;) lol

Yeah mate , I was looking at the side on view pics yesterday and it looks spot on compared to a similar one of urban . I was also think it might need a bit of padding behind your head as well as in some pics it sits too far forward as well ?

There's a full helmet liner in the lid mate so it's far more padded at the rear than it was

Well as you may be aware I've been working on making this lid as screen accurate as I can...There were issues with the lid I wasn't always happy with down to the very small window of time i had to get it completed. So over the last couple of weeks I've been getting screen caps and measurements of the actual lid and transferring them to mine...The biggest issue with mine and I think most of the other builds out there is the fact we ignored the angles at the sides of the helmet....the fact that the base of the helmet if we held it straight up actually tapers to apoint at the sides hasn't been lost on me...that and the fact the respirator badge isn't flat too has meant some major reworking of the current build.

Posted Image

that's the original build...and whilst it looked good probably due to the lack of any real screen references it's not as accurate as it should be.

Posted Image

whilst the crappy iphone pic does it's best to distort things. you can actually see the new angles on the base now...I've reduced the height of both back and front of the helmet by a good amount...The other issue is concerning the nape of the neck...most people have made there's so it actually flat...having seen the back of the helmet properly on the B-roll footage...flat it ain't it's a very nice curve...stands to reason too as you have to move your head up and down whilst wearing a neck brace....so it's bound to be a nice curve

Posted Image

looks a bit rough at the moment but it's still going through the stages of being filled before refining takes place

Posted Image

as you can see it sits back at a decent angle now, and having compared my lid with the actual one by overlaying the images I've surprised myself at how close I got it with just eyballing it

Posted Image

it may look a bit skewed here but that's due to one side of the card filling the void where the visor is being a little longer one side that the other

I've still to cut back and remove the filler from the front slant of the jawline but it's shaping up very well. :D

Looking much better now mate , so pleased you have gone for the tweaks we all mentioned , and looks like youve found some more B)
it'll be worth all the extra work in the end mate and will be possibly the most accurate out there :)

Well what a difference a couple of hours can make...working with the pics I've collected on my trusty tablet PC I set about the real hard work and that is removing the excess filler and the card. Having looked at the pics again and again i manged to crop the actual lid from on of the screen caps and superimposed it over one of my own...whilst I had been please at most of the angles I saw that the back was still a bit out so trimmed a bit more off and shaped it.

may not look like much difference but there's a shed load...it's now had a generous coat of filler and is drying off now...All in all I think the mods have made a huge difference...if we'd had all they screen caps etc a while ago there wouldn't be all this messing about now out in the cold

It'll make for easier movement too when worn too...I had issues with the thing clattering into the back of my neck due to the padding slipping...I'm planning a decent foam padding accessory for this so it'll velcro into the lid with one pad for the done and one wrap around for the cheeks and back so should be nice and comfy

Hiya Martin, loving the helmet! As a matter of interest, when you make a mold using silicone and fibreglass jacket(?) for something like this, what sort of cost do you think the mold runs to in materials? Thanks!

Depends on the size of the item mate. but for this mould I can go two ways either cheaper tin sil 7025 a kilo kit is about 18 quid from mould life. Or use Plat Gel 10....As I've recently used the last of my tinsil I'll be going plat gel 10 a 2 kilo kit is 42 quid plus postage....but as I usually order a shed load of stuff in one go, the cost of carriage is negligible....Either method will see me only use about half a kilo. I'll not be using fibreglass for a jacket either. I make my own Plastipaste from easy flo resin. It's stronger and less prone to the cracking you get with some F/G moulds when you clamp them closed.
